@@David-gj9qr I think there are problems with the companies lowering pay for their drivers depending on the amount of tips the app knows they receive. So they aren't getting paid properly because the companies are basically counting tips as their own pay.

I love food delivery apps. Every time I can't decide what to do for dinner, I go onto one of them, find something I really want, get to the checkout page where they tell me what the total's going to be after all the fees, and then say "eh, I'll just get something out of the fridge." Saves me a ton of money on eating out.

It's often really bad. Uber eats charges a fee to the resaurant each month, then a charge for each order, and an additional percentage of the price paid.
Then you pay a 10% extra fee when you order + delivery + fee for paying by card.
It's not uncommon for uber eats to charge twice as much as simply ordering yourself from the restaurant or, my favourite trick, asking a taxi to pick it up from the drivethrough since $10 for the taxi is almost certainly less than Uber's ridiculous fees.

Uber can be really bad. I remember them sending me this really great sounding coupon, like half off if you order 25$ worth of food. Somehow they change the fees so that after the coupon it costs the same as if I ordered 24.99$ worth of food. It literally did nothing. It was a lie.

Yeah, I used one of these apps once when I was dog sitting about a year ago. I didn't want to leave because the dog liked to chew on things she wasn't supposed to, and my food options were limited at the house I was staying at (I stayed over at the person's house while dog sitting since they were going to be gone for the weekend and I lived thirty minutes away). I opened the app ordered some Raising Cane's, and at checkout, I couldn't believe how expensive the total was. It was nearly double what I normally pay for their food. I bite the bullet because I didn't want to leave the dog, but I've never used one of those apps again. I'd rather make the drive or cook myself than get ripped off like that again

This reminds me of college. Food in the campus cafeteria was at least twice the price of normal food - think 15 bucks for a McDonald's style burger - and in order to buy stuff from the cafeteria you had to load up a card instead of paying cash. And you had to spend $1,500 to load the card up with $1,000. You were literally throwing away a third of your money just to be able to buy overpriced food because of "administrative fees".
They hid the costs so well I didn't even find out until sophomore year. Luckily I got some of it refunded, but they only refunded me so I didn't sue for the few thousand dollars of hidden fees they took from me and couldn't explain.

Also I've never seen or heard of a college take away an entire 1/3 of your money to "convert" it to essentially a reloadable gift card. Maybe you confused dollars/"bucks" with rupees.

oh definitely, cooking at home is not only cheaper it can be *way* healthier… but if someone *needs* delivery (physical, medical or transportation issues etc) its still far better to go with groceries.
Ordering a doordash for every meal would stack up astronomical fees, instead order Instacart to the market. condense those fees+tip to just one or two deliveries a month with a good planned out grocery list.
Can feed a whole family for weeks for the same cost as just a few UberEats meals. Anyone claiming prices & fees are so high they just cant afford to tip is full of (greedy lazy entitled) shit. I cant afford those fees +tip on single meals, so i save up for a grocery delivery or just get it myself when physically able.
Nobody *needs* pre-prepared meals delivered on demand, its a luxury even if its McDonalds… don’t expect a broke hungry driver to subsidize that luxury by delivering for nothing… learn to boil water & make a fkkn sandwich like the rest of us (to non-tippers not you OP)

@@Lisa-Simpson-i3i Damn right. First of all, thanks for being real about some people having legitimate need for delivery services. Too many people are like dOn'T bE lAzY and it's just super ableist and icky.
Second, in case any anti-tippers come at you, let me be a token literally-homeless-disabled-student voice to reinforce that tipping is non-negotiable and no card-to-play changes that. It's part of the cost of service (whether it should be or not is a separate issue obv) and anyone who can't afford to tip just plain can't afford to use a tipped service, period. Nobody else's needs are made less real just because a customer has needs too.
All my unhoused and otherwise impoverished peers are more religious about tipping than any other demographic I know, and that says a lot because pretty much everyone I know takes it seriously haha. The fact is -- and impoverished people know it better than most -- we HAVE to be considerate of each other and we HAVE to value our community members' work, otherwise we'll lose what last few little threads are actually making our economy function and keeping each other alive!

    This is so relatable!
These food delivery apps really need some sort of overwatch or regulatory body. I live in Malaysia, where food is relatively cheap, and the reason the restaurants increase the menu price on the app here is mostly because of how much they themselves get charged by the app for using their platform. The restaurant ends up getting a way lower profit margin, and there have been instances where the restaurant ends up owing the app company. Especially when there are promotions and discounts going on. The delivery guys have it pretty hard too, and would generally have to rely on tips. It feels so scummy. Convenient, but scummy
