so great to see an AC 7580 with 7bottom plow, one of the farms I worked on in WNY had a 7580. He farmed about 1200ac of corn in Niagra County and the 7580 was the workhorse plowing and chisel plowing, and occactally pulling out the stuck Gleaner combine in those wet fall years.
Way back in the 80's I eyewitnessed a big tractor like these shown with a mower deck 20 yards wide run over and crush three airplanes that were tied down outside. The operator had a heart attack. One of the line boys from the FBO was brave enough to run up and jump on, get the door open and shut down the tractor. Then the same guy drug the operator out and performed CPR and saved the dudes life. I was not old enough to drive yet. The tractor was big, articulating and green.
Always like seeing silver paint working the dirt. Cool video. We had a 4-180 to begin with. Talk was so I'm told that my Pop looked into either a 4-210 or 4-225 to replace it but couldn't justify the mega jump in price in the space of 5-7 years from when the 4-180 was bought. We kept the 4-180 till we sold up in the mid 90's.
Love the video! I was a mechanic back in those days, and I worked on a lot of those tractors. Deere had their problems with that 955 V8, but that 8850 was a beast. Always liked the look of the Stiegers. I think the Versatiles were probably the best tractor for the dollars. They were powerful, dependable, and easy to work on.
John Deere should I just put the Cummings 855 and all their tractors and use standard fuel pumps. Probably would have kept a lot more customers and save themselves a lot of money.
@truthandfreedom885 I would agree with that all the way. I worked for a Deere dealer back in those days as a tech, and then a service manager. The only thing their 619 was good for was keeping their dealer service departments busy and pissing their customers off. After the 8630s, they should have scrapped that engine and went to the 855 Cummings. But nooooo. Let's keep using the POS. Took them a long time to learn. A lotta guys spent the money on the Kinze repower kit, but they still had an 8630, which had plenty of other problems. I remember the first year I worked for Deere. All we did was mods on 8630's. Tore them apart from front to back. Engines, two speeds, transmissions. And they were still a POS. I can't imagine how much Deere spent on warranty and mods trying to make them a good tractor. And working on them compared to the Versatiles and the Steigers was a freaking nightmare!
@JulianKeller-om6wz When the Bean counters are running the company you never end up with a good product or happy customers. I bought a cream puff 8650 5,500 hours and it looked like it came of the showroom floor. I also bought a 9170 ( basically a steiger) the looked a little rough, had a blade on it at one time and had 8300 hours on it. Guess which one has been always giving me troubles and get such one has been just bulletproof. ( Knock on wood. If I have to spend the day in the field I'd rather be in the cab at the 8650 but the 9170 has been just an incredible workhorse. And our family has been JD green painted equipment for 70 years. The 9170 was just too good of a deal at an auction to turn down.
@truthandfreedom885 Yup. The 9170's were built in the Fargo plant. Red Steigers. Good, dependable tractors. Easier to repair than the 8650 too. And you are definitely right about what happens when a company is run by accountants. Customer satisfaction becomes secondary. I think Deere is in that mode again now. They are all about profits. I understand you have to answer to your stockhloders, but don't bite the hand that feeds you. And they are biting.
@JulianKeller-om6wz I live in Fargo and am very familiar with the history of Steiger. In the 70's they employees seem to be on strike every year. They built workhorses when they were green.
If it's the 555 Cummins the truckers hated them because they kept blowing up in trucks. I always wondered why the 555 was so despised until I went and found history on it. It was a very structurally weak engine and didn't like the type of loads and rpm found in road trucks. They kept throwing rods, blowing head gaskets and so on. They were better suited for use in tractors and tug boats.
What an amazing video. Good to see that JD 8850 being given a decent load to pull in the form of that plow. The MF 4000 series tractor appeared to be experiencing some wheel slip, which is quite something, given that there's 8 wheels in contact with the soil.
Fun video, Thanks for uploading! I am amazed at how John Deer is traeting thier customers shabily and letting Fent take over J.D's former customers. Best Wishes from Montana! M.H
Wow, watching these powerful 1980s 4WD tractors in action is incredible! Seeing them handle such a range of tillage tasks - from moldboard plowing to chisel plowing and disking - really highlights the strength and versatility of these machines. The Big Bud 525/50 and John Deere 8850 in particular are beasts! I'm curious, do you have a favorite tractor among these classics, or is there one that stands out in terms of performance? Thanks for sharing such a fantastic video!
You have the JD 8850 listed at 265 HP on the screen (@ 7:19). I thought it was 370? All these old tractors are simply cooler than the nice and fancy stuff of today IMO.
Raised on Ford blue w/3 independent, local dealers in our area (all gone now to 1 multi-county mega-dealer - as have CiH & JD), so we'd most likely have gone with an FW. I felt an FW-30 would have been a good fit, but my dad struggled with justifying having a dedicated "tillage" tractor (we already had a 9600 for that). Not to mention the price was twice what the 9600 was.
Great video. Saw lots of these when travelling the non US part of the world for FTIO and MF. Lots in unexpected countries!. 8850's didn't fair that well with the V8. Large numbers still working
I love to see these older articulated tractors in action. I wonder if many of these are still being used on farms today? Because in your video’s today we see more of the modern tractors like John Deere and Case IH in action.
Modern agricultural machinery is truly a major leap forward for the farming industry! From automated harvesters to crop-monitoring drones, these technologies not only boost productivity but also optimize costs and protect the environment. Truly the future of sustainable agriculture!"
Grandpa is gone now, but he voted with his wallet back in the day: A White 4-150, 4-180, and Steiger Cougar and Cougar II where the big horses until a Challenger 75 showed up in the early 90s.
@@bigtractorpower Lots of good memories as a teenager in those tractors. I really enjoy seeing them on your channel. I'm glad some folks are still running them.
Hey BTP, nice film with a lot of information. Most of the tractors are old but gold 😉 Looking forward to see more 150+ hp tractors, does not matter if new or "experienced" 😂 The smaller ones can only be classified as joke or old iron... Bavarian regards
I'd like to send you a video of our 8330 Ford 4x4 Jason.... Still runs good and strong as ever...sence i grew up on a white field boss im partial to the white
Is that John Deere 8850 in the opening and in the video, your tractor? Just curious, I’m guessing not since it didn’t have a chrome stack. Good to see the “old” big power working. Enjoy your videos
Big tractor fan but also a city boy. Is there any way you could include a reference to the type of tilling each machine is doing? Some of these machines were maxed out. Very cool. 186 hp? My riding mower has more horsepower. Incredible. Big fan of Welker farms. They run several Big Buds.
Two key reasons were the clearance for burying corn stalks and dealing with stones at the time plowing was at its height. Technology has changed allot since that time for larger roll over plows.
@bigtractorpower the point being reversible ploughs were and are used in most countries ,they didn't seem to catch on in America , the very place you'd think they would have .why waste time travelling on endrigs when you could be ploughing . Totally baffling , another thing I notice never caught on was pick up hitches ,I realise of course larger tractors would need beefier ones .
It was $130,000. Unfortunately, I did not delete 85,000 from the previous one and then I copy and paste and enter the new numbers and the 85 did not go away.
I own the FW-30. It has what are called plowing duals. The outside tires are just above the tread of the inside ones. If the tractor gets in soft ground the outside tires bite in grip and pull through.
Thank you for a blast from the past. A lot of those big tractors we're only seen in magazines.
I could watch these tractors all day. Go tillage!!! I'd Probably go with the Versatile 1150 on triples. Awesome looking 4wd.

I could do that from dark to dark. I do love a good tractor!
There’s nothing like the 80s tractors that I love more than anything

Some of these were tractors I saw in when I was in my youth. This was definitely a change from the european tractors in its day
Excellent video once again big T 👍👍👍
The early 80s prairie monsters are awesome 💪💪💪 especially the International and Steiger...
Love watching these tractors in action 👍
Some classic goodness !!
Need to get that 1586 next for 70’s power.
Nice 80's tractor power😁👍 your FW 30 looks amazing💪😁 thanks for the video👍👍
The Steiger and the Versatile ranked pretty high with me. Great vid!
those cummins v8's always sound good. its odd that they were despised in the trucking world, but seemed to be welcomed in the ag world.

Always been a case guy. That 4890 sounds mean.
The 4890 is a great tractor. Big power in the early 80’s.

Hi Jason,
Nice Video. As Always. But please check the HP of the 8850 again. It should be 370, right?
Holy cow those Rome 475c tractors were expensive!!! $85,130,000!!! 😅😅
Can't believe that they never went to reversible ploughs ,I don't know the last time I saw a conventional plough .
Two key reasons were the clearance for burying corn stalks and dealing with stones at the time plowing was at its height. Technology has changed allot since that time for larger roll over plows.

I'm pretty sure the 8850 was rated at 370HP

I think you might have added to many zeros to that Rome tractors price tag

It was probably originally sold on singles and the duals added much later. It fairly common for them not to be the same size on older tractors
