That whole messaging thing is hitting the nail on the head. I think the term "Pro choice" needs to be changed to something like Pro Freedom, or something , anything better. " Choice" isn't a good description of what half the country sees as ending a life, however misguided that notion is. Pro-life is big government, and religion based beliefs being shoved into government policy , that often results in an increase of welfare recipients . Yet due to good (superb, really) messaging, it somehow fits into small government, constitutional and fiscally conservative agenda (even though it is none of those things). Even this guy brung up messaging but also said "LGBTQ community". I am sorry but that is terrible messaging. Adding another 2 letters to what is already random nonsense anagram is bullcrap. Only way I can even remember the darn anagram is to remember the various sexuality identifier terms.

Dan Savage has no interest in freedom and democracy. Just like all ideologues (which is basically everyone), he likes to shut down and cancel people with whom he disagrees. He only wants freedom on his terms and for people with whom he agrees.
When it comes to elections, he is perfectly happy to resort to cheating and underhand tactics in order to win. Where he loses, he claims it’s rigged or fixed. That’s what the Republicans do. Neither is on the side of democracy here.

@@TheDionysianFields Yes, you're right, the Democrats "abandoned" them right around the time of the civil rights movement when Dems came out in support of said movement. The great migration from Dem to Rep by southern (especially) racists? Ring any bells? Southern Strategy?
And it still works today, play to the racism and xenophobia (and fear) of middle America, and you've got their vote, even while you're fucking them up one side and down the other. It's a winning strategy for sure, and a symbiotic relationship. Millionaires get their minions, and the minions get people promising to hurt the people they hate. Pay up, fuckers.
Let's not call middle America ideological, it takes no brains whatsoever to just be a dick, and that's what middle America is, one giant, flaccid cock of petrified white people, simply putting off the inevitable. The country's gonna get brown, people, it's a done deal.

All's fair I suppose. Anyway, I live in middle America and I reject your lame stereotype. I've had brown friends since grade school and am still friends with some of them (almost 40 years later) despite our wildly differing politico-philosophical *ideologies*. Just wanted to let you know that a lot of those knuckle dragging people work hard to feed a lot of people. Raising all sorts of grain, livestock, fruits and veggies just to name a few. Not to mention living in a barren wasteland while doing it. Also the amount of produced goods that come from these rural areas. Those knuckle dragging people provide a great cog in this wheel you call life would be my guess. To be one voice means much more than referring to each other in such a degraded fashion. Not to throw stones because I've voiced the same negativity also but let's try and put ourselves in someone else's shoes. I'll try to do better.

Free speech is free speech, and while a private company has the right to fire someone for speech they don't like, I don't think we should be taking the speech of comedians very seriously.. She disgraced herself with that pathetic whining performance at her press conference, though. Come on, Kathy, you made yourself look so incredibly weak. Trump didn't ruin your career, CNN fired you because they're cowards, and you should have known better. You made a choice to participate in edgy, shit art, and there were consequences. Free speech doesn't mean zero consequences, get over yourself.

Mckenzie .Latham, don't forget that Nugent also said that Obama should "suck on my machine gun". He also said at a NRA convention that if Obama were re-elected he (Nugent) would end up dead or in jail. Trump actually defended his comments by claiming that they were just a figure of speech and that it showed how angry people were at Obama. He then subsequently invited Nugent, a guy that had made extremely violent remarks regarding Obama, to visit the White House. Imagine how the right would act if the next Democratic president invited Griffin to the WH.

This guy couldn't be more wrong on the Democrat's national strategy. You know what being the party of urban America only gets you? A never ending minority in the House of Representatives.
Hillary Clinton just lost to a fascist, sexist, racist fucking pig because she and her campaign decided that trying to turn out urban voters rather than campaigning in rural areas was a better strategy, and she lost. Even if she had won she wouldn't have passed anything in the House. You can't rely solely on the largest county/city in every state, and expect to win elections. This strategy has failed us for going on 8 years straight. We need to campaign like Bernie did, and start winning those red, rural areas, so that our blue pockets aren't surrounded on all sides by conservatives. The strategy this guy proposed is already failing, and if we try it again, it will fail again.

Yes Betsy, and that is where he went too far. I'd cap the true deplorable number at only 10-15 million, a lot of his eventual voters were reluctant voters that wanted anyone buy Hillary. But the people that looked at president BIRTHER (Obama was not an American Citizen) in the primaries and tossed in their enthusiastic support, a LARGE chunk of those people are deplorables. And say infinitely worst about liberals like me living in on the coasts in large cities.
And I know this because I listen to them when they call in on conservative talk radio. The right can't lie to me because I go right to the source and listen with my liberal ears. No deflections will stand against my front row seat to how they behave.

This man talks a lot of sense and there are a lot of us Democrats out there that think the same! Now, the Democrats need to stop the power struggle, stop fighting among themselves, stop feeding into talking heads, stop buying into Main Stream Media, but they need to get their act together for when this disastrous Trump/Republican leadership ends!

Dan Savage for president! What I am continuously impressed by is how much time this gay writer devotes to political issues, and health issues, that mostly concern and affect straight women. I don't take that for granted - well done Dan.

Just watched Dan Savage on the anniversary special saying Maher was the only person who lost their job after 9/11. Not true at all. Ward Churchill was fired from his teaching career at the U of Denver for writing about the motivation of the people who flew the planes. Maher could invite him on to the show. He deserves to be heard as much as Dan Savage.

We in the blue states learned a generation ago that we were competing in a global market. We were forced to learn knowledge based jobs earlier than the red states. For good or bad, market forces have hit the entire country now. Many jobs and skill sets are obsolete. We can either face this fact, get educated and compete on a world stage or we will continue to fall behind as a nation. Automation is what is killing jobs, not immigrants. The jobs that immigrants are taking at low skill jobs that dont pay enough to support a family anyway. I know its hard to face and change can be scary, but there is zero choice. Trying to hold back change... might as well be trying to hold back the tides.

The problem with American politics is highlighted here perfectly. He keeps referring to the democratic party as "we". If you're a voter, you shouldn't have a team, you vote for who you think is the best candidate. Even if it's obvious that you would vote for the one party, you are voting for them, not joining them.

As a loyal Bill Maher viewer, when in the Dan Savage interview the question was asked - why is it that the majority of middle America voters could never vote for a Democrat - why can't Democrats acknowledge and admit to the real issue - because those voters have grown up believing Democrats will raise taxes. And in general that's true. The message that gets lost is what those taxes pay for. But for the majority of middle America voters, any tax increase is bad - no matter what it pays for, because they can't afford to pay higher taxes, but what they fail to realize, Democrats would raise taxes but on those capable of paying more in taxes. The problem those voters now have - their conservative elected officials want to take away their health benefits in order to pay for a tax break for wealthy. To Bill's point last night about Democrats needing to have one voice - why aren't Democrats using that as their unified stump speech?

I like Dan Savage, but man is he wrong about simply appealing to the cities and urban areas. Rural, white liberals like me want my neighbors to vote Democrat--but the party can't simply dismiss people as ignorant/racist/stupid. HELP everyone regardless of creed or color get better jobs, better pay, and then work on the social issues. Most poor folks in America want a good job, money to put food on the table, decent time off, and economic security. 99% of people in this country should vote Democrat EVERY TIME. The fact that Republicans run the government isn't a success story for the GOP, it's a failure narrative for Democrats. It's being uptight, self righteous dicks that makes Democrats lose.
Embrace Democratic Socialism, kick Pelosi and the failed Dems out of the party, and stop taking big donor and PAC money.

As we saw in 2020 just as Dan Savage said, if more people came out to vote in urban areas and the cities, then they will outperform rural voters. He got it exactly right. What do I like best about Biden winning? He won WITHOUT OHIO.
