I love Dan Savage. I think he is a great sex educator. I think he has great politics. Love him.

I like and admire Dan a great deal. I do not agree with everything he espouses but I enjoy hearing and being challenged with alternative ideas from lots of different people. I was concerned that he made an incorrect statement about Brokeback Mt. It was set in 1963! Not "the 70's". That might not change his perspective on it - which he is entitled to hold. But I would want someone to correct me if I misspoke.

No I do not have a "moral obligation" to be out. You come out when it suits you. If you wanna save the world, fine, but you can't force everyone else just to suit you.

He's not forcing anyone out. People ask him whether or not they should, unprovoked. He tells them they should. It's up to them whether or not they choose to do it. Projecting that they're forced out won't change that.

I agree it's not a moral obligation to be out, but I believe without question that it's a moral obligation to be true to oneself and to be one's authentic self. That doesn't necessarily mean being out, but for many of us it does.

Dan should get that same Presidential Medal that Ellen got... i.e., The next time we have a legitimate president

A better approach to someone who is struggling to come out would be advising them to seek the help of a councillor or other such person, to help them come to terms with it, not simply saying "eat me".

There was nothing funny about that horrible, stereotypical scene from Barney Miller. Those scenes perpetuated ignorance and hate. It also reinforces why gay guys don't come out of the closet.

No, they were fucking hysterical. Stereotypical... but funny.

Moral failing? What is this drive to "out"?

So your immoral if your in the closet, an odd statement by someone who says he’s there to help people. And of course their are a hole lot of reasons why people don’t come out that Savage didn’t mention. Sometimes when people get empowered by their position and popularity they get bad.

    • @mrmadness2699

He didn’t say that someone was immoral if you’re in the closet. He says that you’re guilty of a moral failing, and he goes on to say that we’re ALL guilty of moral failings from time to time. To say that he’s bad is indicative of the narcissism of small differences that is rife in the American left. If he’s your enemy b/c he tells people who CAN be out SHOULD be out, then what do you call Pat Robertson who said that homosexuals deliberately spread AIDS by cutting people with their pinky rings?
