  • (NOTE: This video has been replaced with a new version in HD - please view the new video here: • Vancouver SkyTrain and... ).
    Skytrain is the fastest form of urban transport within the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. Skytrain is operated by the British Columbia Rapid Transit Co. - part of TransLink, the South Coast British Columbia Transportation Authority.
    There are three lines - the Expo Line: opened in stages between 1985 and 1993 - the Millenium Line: opened in 2002 - and the Canada Line: opened in 2009. A new extension of the Millennium Line is opening in late-2016.
    In this video - two different types of train are in use on the Expo/Millennium Lines - the Mk1s introduced in 1985, the Mk2s in white introduced in 2002, and the MK2s in black introduced in 2009.
    In 2009, another type of train was introduced to Metro Vancouver. These were built by Hyundai Rotem - exclusively used on the Canada Line to YVR Airport and Richmond from Waterfront.
    For full fleet info, see here! cptdb.ca/wiki/i...
    As promised - a new 'SkyTrain in Action' video for you all! 1 hour long! Includes new stations on the Millennium Line's Evergreen extension, as well as old favourites on the Expo, Millennium and Canada lines.

    Unfortunately I don't know anything about it. Right now I don't think TransLink can afford to replace the MK1 stock. There is new stock arriving for the opening of the Evergreen Line in 2016, but that's all we know right now. Those will be fixed four-car sets, as opposed to the two-car sets which are the norm for Skytrain right now.

    As I understand it the goal is to give them a mid-life modernization rather than replace them. Translink's 2010 five year plan mentioned this but did not estimate cost. The Mark I's apparently have a 50 year or so expected life span so really they are just middle-aged right now.
    I went to and from Metrotown today on a Mark I and they seemed as solid now as they were during Expo 86, and just as much fun too!

    The Canada-Line trains is often crowded it seem that it is over capacity there is no room for expansion ! Stations are too short to accommodate a longer trains.. My take was it was push ahead for the 2010 Olympics and not planned for the greater Vancouver future in population growth.

    • @Welwyn22
      @Welwyn22  10 лет назад

      I quite agree with you wholeheartedly. The Canada Line was built to provide a fast link between Downtown, the Airport and Richmond during the Olympics, and it was figured it would be big enough. Unfortunately when TransLink truncated every express bus route out of Downtown to Bridgeport it basically funneled everybody onto the Canada Line, which now at peak times is overcrowded.

    • @henrymartyn3117
      @henrymartyn3117 9 лет назад

      Welwyn22 The Canada line trains are also not compatible with the other trains. They also lack the power of the other trains and aren't as efficient. Maybe in the future they can retrofit the line with longer stations and run linear induction motors to bring the Canada Line up to the same standards as the other lines

    • @Welwyn22
      @Welwyn22  9 лет назад

      I doubt they would do this, having spent as much as they did to build the line in the first place. One option they are exploring is fitting a third car to the existing trains which may ease some overcrowding until the platforms can be extended for double-length trains.

    • @thertlguy634
