Back in the 90s someone I knew bought an old blue Silver Cloud for a few thousand quid, lots of miles but mechanically and cosmetically fairly sound. He'd been an engineer and nearing retirement and wanted a hobby and that was it. He told me there were lots of cheap service parts for the car and servicing it for him was quite simple. It was stored in a unit and kept clean and polished to a high standard. It was very reliable. The car initially paid for it's keep by doing weddings and the occasional chauffeuring trips, often for businessmen from and to airports, and eventually became a nice regular little earner. Sadly, plans to have touring holidays in it were scuppered by his wife who thought it was far too ostentatious!

There's a classic story in our family about the Rolls.
My great uncle was an eccentric gentleman. He was a successful farmer who was born deaf. He never married and his passions were photography (he had his own dark room) and cars (owning various sporty Fiats, Studebakers, and other cars not usually found in rural southern New Zealand.)
Anyway, about 1980 he died suddenly, and my grandparents inherit his estate. A couple of weeks after his passing, a letter from the Rolls Royce company arrived addressed to him. It was as follows:
    "Dear Mr. Cameron,
We have received your order for your new Rolls Royce. We estimate that delivery will be in approximately six months time."
My grandparents cancelled the order, much to the disappointment of my father, who to this day wishes he could have had the chance to drive about the countryside in the family Rolls.

    • @peterriggall8409

Great story. I bet RR were just a bit disappointed too.

    • @KoldingDenmark

Too bad he didn't get a chance to drive / be driven in this beautiful car.
Too bad the car was not delivered.
Once your grandmother had experienced riding in the back seat, she most probably would have changed her mind about cancelling the order.
In the early 1990's I frequently chauffeured a 1981 Silver Shadow II. I never got/took took the opportunity, though, to chauffeur my mother in it, which I regret to this day. I actually wonder why, because I did come to see her driving it. Have a picture of it in my parents' carport.

I've always been aware of wiper performance, squeaky blades, juddering and not clearing water properly drive me mad. But Ian has brought it to a different level... I'm now looking for triangles of doom and corners of disappointment and the saddest part is, I enjoy it.

My son had a 1974 Silver Shadow for quite a few years, I was allowed to borrow it but rarely did (usually when the fuel was on the low side!). Beautiful vehicle to drive, also respect from other drivers was nice. Took it to Lidls a few times to do the weekly shop, raised a few eybrows.

I stopped in a Hotel in Durham a couple of months ago and the owner gave me the keys to his RR Shadow 2 with carbs. It took me a while to find the handbrake release. I did about 10 miles in it on the country roads. Well what a wonderful thing. So smooth and quiet and it just floated along. I was very impressed and so were my passengers.

This reminds me of when my Granddad parked his new Morris Ital next to one of these years ago. Both the same colour, and he was convinced his Ital was just a more cost effective Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit. He wouldn't stop going on about it. In his eyes the Ital was just missing that iconic grill and flying lady. They do share a similar shape. For that Christmas we got him a hood ornament for his Ital.
Great video Ian. Thought you might have driven the Reliant Robin, so you can compare it to TWC? What about tracking down as many three wheelers as possible? Tricky, but fascinating.

Fantastic review of a Spirit (I), thank you so much for candid comments. Nearing my 60s now and house finally paid off, I am gingerly considering the purchase of either a Shadow II or a Spirit (I). I have no interest in speed or handling, just elegance, comfort, presence and "waft". I have loved RR all my life and dreamed of one, never having ever driven one. As a guest of Peninsular Hotel Hong Kong in the 80s, I did ride in one which was such a treat. Your video has encouraged me further, thank you!

A Proper British Motor Car! Absolutely wonderful. I was lucky enough to drive one of these some years ago after fitting new spheres to the rear suspension (that was fun I don't think!). Your description of "wafting" is spot on! I used to MOT test another example that the owner maintained himself- very well I might add. He always wanted a Rolls-Royce and that was the only way he could afford one! We can but dream....

Nothing like a classic Rolls-Royce! Each is handcrafted.
I think it might take the hides of ten cows. Connelly leather, Wilton wool carpeting. The epitome of luxury. Today's Rolls-Royce, and Bentley, cannot hold a candle to this!
I don't think a well looked after example is any more expensive than any other classic!
I must say you do look like Sir HubNut driving this!

When I was a kid, I worked in a garage and got the job of washing and polishing a 1934 Rolls-Royce belonging to a retired Major, a rather eccentric gent who always wore jodphurs and a riding jacket. The job took a while, but then I was going to drive my first Rolls out to the car park. I jumped into the car, to discover that the right hand side gear lever shot straight up the leg of my trousers. Getting it up the leg was easy, but I found that the only way to get it out was to wriggle out of my pants and end up standing in the workshop in my socks and Y-fronts! As the car was parked opposite the office girls' window it was a predicament no 17 year old wants to be in. As I stood there, with the rest of the staff howling with laughter, the Major turned up. He took in the situation at a glance and said, "Ah! You have discovered why I always wear Jodhpurs"!

I'd describe this one as being finished in triple worthers original! I was luck enough to drive these and Bentleys in my early 20's as the Jaguar/Land Rover/Saab dealership I worked at were RR/Bentley service/used dealers, I'd often get into work before anyone else just to take them out for an "extended road test" they are magnificent and lovely old things.

I used to work in the Parts Department of a Rolls Royce Dealer. Met quite a few owners, all the A listers in my city. We had a box of spare keys for every vehicle ever sold at the Dealership. Unlabelled of course. RR also have an excellent leather care product, part number RH503, which keeps all leather soft and supple. Heavy on the lanolin.

A 90's Rolls Royce. It's interesting, it has lots of character, old badly treated ones are remarkably cheap. It's ruinously expensive to run. Home tinkering is likely to end in tears. It's very spacious and magnificently wafty. Anyone thinking of running one as a daily would be bonkers. The perfect HubNut family car?

Great video of the ultimate waft factor.. One must for a RR test drive is the view out over the bonnet with the Spirit of Ecstasy surveying the way out front.
A Citroen CX Prestige has more rear comfort and head and leg room than the Spirit. In addition to the Prestige having rear footrests and headrests you get sun visors for the side windows plus sun blinds for the rear window... And the concave rear window is self cleaning via aerodynamics...
How about a test of a Silver Spirit versus a Citroen C6 for the ultimate WAFT Factor?

Good day sir. Feel free to discuss articulated wipers and wipers in general, as much as you like. I freely admit to loving the wiper nuances of various models. Our Roller could use some “wiper blade engineering” (removing or reducing the triangle of death as much as possible, by resizing the wiper blades) asap. I had a 700R4 transmission in a GMC truck in 1992. Its only failure was due to driver ignorance. Thanks for the ride, without a single Grey Poupon mustard joke. Cheers.

I say, what a splendid motor car sir. Not too sure about the Granada Ghia roof though. I was viviting a small village in Hertfordshire the UK many years ago and watched with much amusement as a lady of advancing years was escorted from a small delicatessen to her Rolls Royce by her uniformed chauffeur. He opened the rear door for her. When she was correctly seated he then drove the car for all of 20 yerds before entering a driveway to a very nice edwardian house. He then opened the rear door to allow said lady to exit the car before then opening the front door of the house for her to return home. Wonderful.

These really are a lot of car! I agree the styling might not be to everyone's taste but I think the Bentley versions with the four round headlights do look a lot better, and the more aggressive front spoiler/air dam on the later Turbo R cars improves the look further. Running costs are quite steep, I've spent a few grand in the 6 months I've had my Turbo R on various things, mostly things that didn't need doing right away but best to get done. So far it's been very reliable. And as you say, the handling really isn't what you'd expect from a car that size. Fuel wise I get around 20 mpg on the motorway and about 12 round town.
It's a shame this one doesn't have the lambswool over rugs, those really are something else. And I'm glad you mentioned the smell, it really is something special in these cars. And even in the Turbo R the way it can serenely build speed is wonderful, though with the Turbo R you have the less serene option if you want it.

When I was working at a privately owned garage in the early 90's, as the service manager, parts manager and car salesman along with other hats I wore. I traded in a 1973 silver shadow with a black vinyl roof. It was an ex-wedding car and had that many miles on it, Neil Armstrongs space suite was in the boot. I gave a paltry £1000 in part exchange knowing how these things rot. As it turned out, it was surprisingly solid. Anyhow on the test drive, it wallowed so badly I thought that the shock absorbers were shot (turns out they weren't!) We ended up putting it on ebay as it would have looked a bit out of place lined up with punto's, fiesta's and saxo's. Needless to say we took a £200 loss on it as it was taking up far too much space. What did the customer trade it in for? A saxo VTS for his son. Cannot imagine what the insurance on one of those would have been for a 17 year old newly qualified driver.

Forget who the coachbuilder was but it was not of a modern design even for the 20's, Chauffeur and attendant/footman sitting in the open. If left parked unattended the Spirit of Ecstacy radiator cap had to be taken with one to prevent it being stolen, it weighed over a pound, Gold plated Bronze, and was 6" tall.

Great video. Interestingly, I noticed years ago when in the Pulborough RR&Bentley dealership in the late 80's, that they did gradually 'sit down' on their haunches if left for a long time - the rear springs are about half the height of the fronts so cannot hold up the rear when the hydraulics aren't pressurised.

My brother picked me up from the airport in one he'd picked up cheap (a couple of thousand pounds) a few days before. I'd driven to the airport in Sydney in a Mazda 323 hire car with wife young kids and associated luggage and push chairs etcetera in the boot but dispite the enormous size and weight of the Roller the same luggage wouldn't fit in the boot and quite a bit had to be stowed in the cabin with us. The boot on the Roller is quite large but very shallow

When Rolls-Royces stopped looking like total luxury and more like posh saloons and designs made more use of a ruler. Remember reading my Daily Express motor show yearbook and seeing the horror that was the top-of-the-range Camargue!

@Paul Fellows to me the grille is not great but okay. I think there is too much bodywork under the headlights. Also to much metal above the wheel arches and the roof line is also too high. Some crazy Murican should chop and channel the thing, it may look better then.

I remember a business acquaintance of my father's trading in a used Rolls Royce Silver Spirit for a then new Lexus LS 400 back in the day. Seemed odd at the time, but with the hindsight that comes with adulthood, I think I'd prefer the build quality, reliability and subtlety of the Lexus over the Rolls now too. The Rolls is rather glorious though.

The wipers _should_ activate with the washer function, but the control module under the dash eventually malfunctions, and it’s not easy to source another good one. I’ve got the same year Spur, it’s the one issue I’ve never bothered addressing.
As far as running costs go, it’s no worse than any mid-range SUV or Mercedes. The trick is to make sure you properly drive these cars regularly. If you park them for six months or a year, that’s when you start to get issues.

Back in the 1970s my sister's horse escaped and a chap with a Rolls Royce cornered it quite some miles away. The horse left some serious dents on the Rolls Royce.....and the owner said " my fault, I shouldn't have tried to corner the horse". My dad still paid for the bodywork repairs, but the guy was so nice about the whole thing. We think the horse had been stung by a bee or wasp.

I have only driven a left hand driven 1981 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow II.
Yet it takes me aback that the parking brake in a right hand is positioned next to the drive shaft tunnel.
I have been chauffeured in a Silver Spirit, but - honestly - my attention at that point was elsewhere.
