San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge westbound

The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge is a complex of bridges spanning San Francisco Bay between the cities of San Francisco and Oakland. One of America's most impressive engineering achievements, the complex was built at practically the same time as the nearby Golden Gate Bridge and opened to traffic in 1936.
The bridge has two sections of roughly equal length; the older western section connects downtown San Francisco to Yerba Buena Island and the newer eastern section connects the island to Oakland. The western section is a double suspension bridge with two decks, westbound traffic being carried on the upper deck while eastbound is carried on the lower level. The largest span of the original eastern section was a cantilever bridge. During the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, a portion of the eastern section's upper deck collapsed onto the lower deck and the bridge was closed for a month. Replacement of the eastern section of the bridge as a causeway connected to a self-anchored suspension bridge began in 2002, with the project being completed in 2013.

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL BRIDGE!! I just listened to “Save Me, San Francisco” by Train. One of my favorite songs! 👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸 I would love to take a ride on the Bay Bridge. Unfortunately, I live in Pennsylvania. I have been in San Francisco though. Had a great time! We just didn’t have time to cross this bridge.

The Golden Gate Bridge is taller at 746 feet. The Bay Bridge is only 526 feet tall. When the Golden Gate Bridge opened, it was the longest/tallest in the world.

@@jaur168 the Golden Gate Bridge has one single main span, while the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge has two. With newer technologies (mainly due to using orthotropic decks like that used on the new Carquinez Bridge span) the suspension spans constructed back in the 1930s could now be superceded by a single span that would be longer than the Golden Gate Bridge.
