    Appreciate the empathy of Brett bringing up the context about AD Mitchell’s Type 1 Diabetes as it relates to how he’d interview in the morning. We tend to forget these are young guys having to manage an incredibly strenuous gauntlet of physical and mental tasks. Acting like one bad morning (likely explainable by a medical condition) can serve as a blanket evaluation of a person’s character is pretty silly.

    • @bretttaylor3787
      @bretttaylor3787 Месяц назад

      Agree, but at the same time, if you know you’re not great until a few hours in the day wouldn’t you adjust your schedule? I mean, it is his responsibility to manage himself. To me that says something.

      @@bretttaylor3787yeah, because the NFL and their weirdo scouts/coaches would totally understand a kid rescheduling on very short notice for the biggest job interview of his life, because [to them] he doesn't "feel good"
      I'm not downplaying his condition at all, I'm a Colts fan and agree it was probably the reason. My point is they probably would have taken that as a negative too. We've all heard stories of guys missing meetings and whatnot getting taken off a teams draft board. I know he didn't miss it, and if he rescheduled he wouldnt have, but again these people are weird and have strange feelings on silly shit like that. He probably figured it was better to just gut through it and try his best

      @@bretttaylor3787 From the sound of it, the teams do their interviews at the combine in the morning with few to no exceptions; for an event managing that many people with possibly-conflicting schedules, rescheduling the interviews for later in the day when he'd be better might not have been an option. And while AD Mitchell isn't the first Type 1 diabetic in the league (just off the top of my head, Mark Andrews is, as well, and I'm sure he's not the first, either), it's not a common condition and not one teams are just going to assume to be the case and have ready accommodations for.

Raiders already have a day 3 QB in O'Connell on the roster, I don't think just throwing another dart at a late round QB was necessary this year.

  • @BOrderlander
    @BOrderlander Месяц назад +14

    You could make the case, if you want to play read the tea leaves, that both Atlanta and Minnesota drafted like they expect Atlanta to have to give picks to Mn for tampering. Atlanta grabbed a QB knowing they won't have picks to get one next year, and Minnesota traded away 2025 picks for Turner, like they believe they've got more 2025 picks incoming. If your asking "why sign Kirk for 100M then?" signing Kirk is what landed them the tampering charge, after which they would have realized they'd have to look for their future QB this year v. next year.

    • @WildSotaPhoto
      @WildSotaPhoto Месяц назад +2

      Yes as well as the Vikings will likely land 2 third round comp picks in 2025 for losing Cousins and Hunter in FA. And they will also have a ton of cap space next year to go shopping even after resigning Jet.

      This is an interesting take. It does make you wonder if the league docs ATL draft capital for tampering do those picks just go into the ether or does Minnesota get them form Atlanta? If Minnesota does get them, I could totally see reasoning behind the aggressive move to get Dallas Turner. Because Vikings gave up a lot of draft capital to make that jump.

    Great call by Mina on the vikes. None of the draft experts are looking at it as a whole. They’re not realizing the only real holes are guard, corner and dt. Two of those three are generally cheap and they have a bunch of young corners from previous drafts.

      100%, and the Vikes coaches have been high on Brandel for a while, and Rouse might be decent insurance there. They also have a strong floor at CB with Blackmon, Murphy and Griffin. If any of Booth, Khyree, Dwight or Akayleb take any steps, the group goes up with them. At the very least Booth showed signs of improvement late last season. Khyree and Dwight have unusual length, and Flores will surely help some of them.

    Coleman was referred to as a "Tackle" by Adam Peters and all the graphics put out by our social media. He's probably gonna start out at LT. If he can't hack it, they probably just roll with Lucas (and probably find a vet somewhere) and try again next year. He played Guard and Tackle in college and his highest graded season was almost exclusively at LT.
    I'm gonna go with Peters liked Sinnott based off the comps Peters gave him in the press conference over the prospects that went after. Two of the tackles you listed I *believe* are RTs, which is a need but not the same level of need. For the one that I know is a LT, I wonder if Suamataia may have turned them off a bit since he transferred his first year in college to BYU due to homesickness. The DMV is a loooooooong way from Utah. Though KC is closer to DC than it is to Utah too LOL.

      @@TFFForecast Kellen Moore calls several variations of plays that completely neutralized Herbert's arm. He sends *all receivers* out 15 yards on the same play. Not only does this not require a strong arm, it also gives all defenses the capacity to triple-cover those receivers.
      It ain't sexy, but I _like looking_ at the play-calling. Mostly because I want the crappy coaches who don't deserve to be in the NFL kicked out! Kollmann himself here did one about Matt Canada & it was perfect. & the fans did chant him out of town.
      However, not everyone is so lucky. I'm only surprised that Golden Boy Herbert is a victim of this. He _had_ Staley & Joe Lombardi, then actually _down-graded_ to the guy whose plays caused Dak to lead the league in INTs (the plays I described above), & now has the OC whose play-calling reduced Lamar so badly everyone still thinks he's a glorified RB. As much as I know Moore hindered him,things might actually be about to get _worse_ for Herbert.

This team has literally been a QB and Coach away for the past half decade. Plus our defense is not terrible, it’s ranked 11 out of 32 teams. We’ll be fine and if Cousins has an Aaron Rodgers injury early in the season, I’d much rather have Penix than Zach Wilson. With the Commanders and OT, I think it is pretty obvious the draft board just didn't work out for them. Reportedly, they did try to trade up, but didn't find a partner, then there was a big gap where there were no tackles taken. So, no question the first two picks were fine. Picking Sinnott over a tackle is going to hang around a while, at least until we see if Coleman can play. As for Newton, it was pointed out that Allen and Payne played a lot of snaps last year and the other DTs are space eaters. Also, yes, this is the last year Allen has guaranteed money on his deal, so there is the potential to trade him.

    Mina nailed the discussion about Penix and how the Falcons took an L on their 1st round pick. The Falcons are losing either way bc if Penix works out you wasted 100mil on Cousins and if Cousins works out, you took a QB that will be riding the pine for a lot of his rookie contract that they won't know if he is their long term solution and possibly wasted a 1st round pick. I watched the take of Mina on first take with Stephen A and she completely roasted him and Dan on their takes on this pick. Mina knows her stuff and does her homework and that clearly showed on her discussion with SAS and Dan.

    Much of Mina’s problem with the Penix selection seems to come from his age. There are at least 2 NFL qbs in the hall of fame who didn’t play before age 27 (Kurt Warner and Roger Staubach). There’s also Brandon Weeden, who was drafted in the first round of the 2012 draft at the ripe age of 28.
    To top it off, Atlanta just gave a four year contract to a 36 year old in a widely lauded move, at the time.
    1. Penix has a play-style that ages very well
    2. Green Bay was able to get a sweetheart prove-it extension on Love. If Atlanta loves what Penix shows behind-the-scenes, it seems likely they could do the same
    3. Kirk Cousins is one of the most cerebral qbs in the league, and he’s seen it all. Allowing a cerebral young player to study under him will pay dividends.
    All that matters is if your qb can play. If you take a 21 year old that can’t, it’s not a good decision because he’s 21. Penix can play.

    I heard Dallas had also been on the phone with KC and was willing to swap 1st round picks 29 for 32 had Buffalo not accepted the trade with KC. So KC would most likely have gotten Xavier Worthy at 29 anyway if Buffalo stuck and picked Keon Coleman at 28. So Buffalo fans shouldn't be too upset about the trade.

    What were the Raiders supposed to do? The top three guys went 1-2-3 and the next three were all gone by the time it got to them(i don't think Nix and JJ are worth the 13th pick plus trade up compensation, Penix I love but nobody was expecting the falcons to pick him there). We already have a developmental guy in Aiden and a bridge guy in Minshew so I don't see the point in just taking some day 3 QB just to say you did.

    If ATL viewed Penix as their no.2-3 QB on the board, I have no qualms with it. Kirk is coming off an ACL, Penix might start the season.
    Do you know who isn’t laughing at the pick. = London, Pitts, Mooney, Bijon.
    Great point too Brett, ATL mightn’t have a first rounder next year.

    I view the value of Dallas Turner as #8 in the draft. As soon as there was no huge trade to get Maye, the move to get #23 wasn’t very important. So why not use some mid-round picks from next year to go that extra mile to get a top ten talent? Let’s not forget they are expecting two 3rd round compensation picks in 2025. They also have quite a lot of cap space next season, so they are hardly going to suffer. If they have a poor season then they still have their 1st round pick - not lost aka Panthers - which will either have value for trading back, or perhaps selecting one of the top players. It has also been said that it looks as though next year’s draft isn’t going to be as strong as this year.

    I don’t think KC is looking to bomb it out. I think they are looking to use motion pre-snap how Miami does and then let Kelce use his crafty ability or find open space to make up for his lost of speed. Rice is also going to get better looks because they can let him release into space CBs will spot them to account for speed. They obviously will go deep, but I think this is about exploiting Mahomes accuracy and quick processing and using YAC.

    I think O'Connell is a better QB than any of the QBs after the 1st round. They're better off trying to find out what they have in him and wait to take one if he doesn't work out. The problem with the Raiders is they perpetually sit in the middle of the pack each year and think they're a few moves away from the playoffs and a super bowl. The fans buy in to the hype of superstar players like Davante Adams, not realizing WR has the least amount of impact of almost any position on the field. This upcoming year should be make-or-break as far as that mentality goes. If they start off 1-3 or 2-4, they should consider looking in to trading Adams.

    I can understand Atlanta not feeling super comfortable with a 36 year old QB coming off an achilles. And I'm not sure if reaching for an edge rusher was going to move the needle much. So, why not draft a player you love at the most valuable position? Sure you paid Cousins a grip but what other options were there? Minshew? Brissett? That's a steep drop off and the price was the price. It wasn't like Cousins wouldn't have got that money somewhere else. What they did was exactly the definition of "scared money don't make money."
    Not saying I would've taken a QB. But I don't think they missed out on a big time talent that would have changed their championship aspirations. Save for Odunze, who they really don't need and would have been more of a luxury.

      _Bingo!_ This is difficult because I can't say, & I'm NOT saying_ this draft was bad. But that o-line got *that QB room to the playoffs.*
      So how badly _did_ it need an upgrade? Meanwhile, now the receiving corps is one minor injury away from being worthless. Even if Roman is good, there's simply not enough threatening players here to make teams not double-cover Pickens. Freiermouth can't carry this team.
      Then there's this: despite other good moves Khan wasted resources getting Watkins & Jefferson? Then had nothing to out-bid the Texans with for Stefon Diggs who cost about as much. I think everyone would prefer Diggs over Watkins, Jefferson *and Austen!*
      If the offense stalls even once, not one Yinzer is going to say "but we upgraded the o-line" in anything but a sarcastic way.

    I couldn't call Buffalo a "playoff team already" after their player losses. Their draft is not guaranteed to plug-in and put them back in the playoff grid. The draft is largely a crap shoot and you must select multiple players at each position of "need" in order to increase your odds of a 'hit'. They lost two WRs and picked 1, not good. They lost two CBs, picked 1 late. They lost a starting safety and drafted 1. They lost a LB and picked 1. These are all big 'maybes'. I'm sure one of these players hits, but likely half of them won't. The Packers did it right. They lost a Safety and drafted 3. The Packers lost 2 offensive lineman and picked 3, Lost 1 LB and picked 2. The Packers aren't assuming they can fill a position with the draft going 1 for 1 on picks to fill the gaps. The Packers used multiple picks and undrafted free agents to compete for a spot. And the Packers aren't shy about giving a starting spot to a late round pick or undrafted free agent rookie if they hit in camp. IMO, the Bills are in big trouble and aren't going to replace their lost vets with just one draft. The Bills are a mediocre team and probably not a playoff team right now.
    Also, unlike the Bills, when the Packers had to start rebuilding when the Rodgers era was over, they started rebuilding in 2022 with Rodgers still there and have spent 3 seasons using the draft to hit on multiple parts of the team with each draft. In 2022 and 2023 they went with WR, TE, OL, DL and got a lucky hit in the 7th round with CB Carrington Valentine. In 2024, this year, the Packers loaded up with 11 draft picks and went OL, S, & LB and a slew of undrafted free agents to compete. None of the draft picks are guaranteed any spot and they would hand a starting job to even a 7th Rounder or undrafted rookie. It worked unbelievably well at WR and produced a 5-deep WR corps that seems to be the league's deepest. The Packers seem to be running the best process for using the draft, competition and coaching development to reload roster spots over the last 5-6 years. Their post-Rodgers rebuild has been amazing and arguably they already started that rebuild back in 2020 with the Jordan Love pick.
