The fact they check their own RUclips channel to remember how they introduce their song is amazing
im pretty sure it was NOT the youtube channel. they have a database of all their live recorded material (dates, venues, etc, etc); Lars specifically asked for the last time it was played. Some dude ran a query to find the date the last time Shortest straw was played, and then launched the file.
hahaha own youtube channel the f is that
@@HorrorKidd88 It makes more sense that way indeed
we can't remember them all, I make them particularly simple for this reason
The future is now🔥
It still blows my mind that Rob has been with the band for 20 years now.
The longest serving bass player!
Reading this made me feel old lol... I still remember when they announced him as the new bass player.
@@KorsAir1987 Just think...it's 2003..you have a flip phone, you probably don't do text messaging because it costs 10 cents per text....social media doesn't exist yet...you can't instantly comment on news or other peoples comments...your life was much simple and you didn't even know it yet...I've been a fan of Metallica since the 80's, long before cell phones and internet, the only thing close to Social media was the local college radio station, where you could call into the station and request songs and comment on the music you just heard for the first time.
Wow for reals! 😮
Woe, now I think about I was in my grandma's house then letting my cousin to download St. Anger album and DVD I bought then. Wow. Time flies
Anyone whos ever been in a band would recognize this. Its refreshing to see that even a band as big as Metallica still practice like they did in the beginning, when they were in the garage. Its funny. I don't know how many times I myself have gone through the whole , "ok what are we practicing? You want to start with this song? Then go into this song?" Then you pick the one that the band needs the most work on and you play that song, as a band at practice, over and over and over again, until each member of the band feels it and feeds off each other's little nuances and gets it as tight as it possibly can be. Its good to see that some things don't change even if you're a major band.
Hell, I'd almost argue it must be harder for them, think of how long they've been doing this and how many songs they have to remember. I've got like 5 rough drafts I can barely keep track of, they've got to remember 100 or so. I think my brain would explode.
Just remembering all that material is amazing and then the set list gets changed. Lol. Not playing a song for a couple of years and then having to play it without practicing it is going to come out different. I played in the 80s and 90s then took 5 years off and now struggle to remember songs. It seems like if I tighten one song down then I forget details of another. Getting old sucks
I find it incredibly difficult to remember lyrics, especially for new songs we’re just learning. And we play originals so they’re MY lyrics lol.
But overall I found this video refreshing.
@@noodlemans I agree
Nothing better!!🤘🏻👊🏻🤘🏻
My band currently has 8 songs in our rotation. I cant imagine having like 7+ albums and trying to remember any of it lmao
😁
Just shows that we're all human, no shame in it. If it can happen to Metallica it can happen to anyone, haha.
Truth! Thought the same thing
Well if you wrote it instead of dave mustaine, you'd remember it quickly. hehehehe
imagine how buckethead feels. LOL the dude got over 530 albums and over 3,200 songs haha
I love how Kirk is just in his own world trying to remember the solos
Hes asked for advill. Probably has a headache
Trying to play music with an obnoxious guy who can barely play the drums will do that to you.
"I'll figure it out"
"it's the notes in between that are fucking with me"
I mean, this is how you deal with James and Lars. When need be, you just turn their volumes down. :D But he WAS listening to Rob. :D
I remember hearing a recording a long time ago where James asked the fans in the audience what they wanted to hear, and someone yelled “Trapped Under Ice” and James was like “Um, I don’t know if I can remember that one” but they tried it anyway and at some point, James just stopped everything and said “Sorry guys, I forgot the lyrics” LMAO, it was so funny. Kudos to these guys for still reaching back into the discography and keeping their set list fresh!
That when they should ask the crowd, who knows the words to the song and let them get up and sing it. Now that is some Dave Grohl shit right there.
@@drop830 they actually did this on an MTV special 20 years ago. I remember a dude in the crowd sang the entire Creeping Death song....
Most underrated song
Makes me sad they forgot that epic song... one of my all time faves.
happened to blink-182 a few years ago (maybe a decade now) where the crowd was chanting for The Party Song and they try playing it right there. Mark forgets the lyrics after like 3 lines, Tom doesn't know what key it's in, but Travis Barker was playing it perfectly. Years later they relearned it and played it live for i think the 3rd time ever and first time since 2000
METAL STRAW!
CHALLENGE LIBERTY
Mate straw!
THE METAL STRAW HAS BEEN SIPPED FOR YOOOUUUU
@@vicariousventure4355🤘
That feeling when you're on stage, crowd watching you but in your head you're thinking "oh, crap, I don't remember the next riff". Yet at the last second your muscle memory kicks in & no one is disappointed.
I miss playing live.
Muscle memory is legit a game changer
Haha.... yeaaaaaa.
It sucks and it's a feeling of absolute panic.
Eventually you realize that stressing yourself out and thinking "Do I remember the next part?" manifests a mistake and the best thing to do is NOT allow that to happen.
This 100%
No one misses you
@@nospillblood You’re projecting. I get asked all the time when am I getting the band back together.
Kirk still not doing his homework.
Even on the black album documentary there's a point where he's about to record a solo and the producer tries to talk with him before he does it and he's just sitting there panicking trying to practice last minute lol.
Es una ternura! Fíjate cómo mira a papá Het 😊 como con esa inseguridad. Yo lo amo ❤
Changes all the great solos live. Pisses me off 😅
@@lotsapasta0858 He's warming up while that self important idiot bugs him.
@@5150forevermore Good guitar players don't replicate solos live.
I'm so happy that I am alive during an era where Metallica exists
Me too!
Yeah, now just being able to afford and go to see them. That's a whole different story.
@@jeffreylieberman1668 Well, fortunately I can, another reason to be grateful for, but that's on my own merit
@@felipemotorhead Nice, enjoy.🤘
This is where Motley Crue has it figured out. Don't gotta relearn songs when you don't play them.
Lars: "Kirk I'm checking with you are you okay?"
Kirk: Kirk.exe has stopped working
Love how everyone is trying to figure out what to do while Kirk is just vibing in the corner 😂
Trying to remember his solo lol
lmao i think Kirk did one bump too many in the 90s lol
I love these guys they saved my life when I was a kid through depression and just me being a punk kid when I found them and megadeth it saved me man the kings
Thats awesome man. They had a pretty big effect on me growing up as a punk kid too. My music hero's . bands like this made me want to play guitar, witch in turn gave my punk ass something to do, and kept me off the streets and out of jail. I always said if it wasnt for my music, id be in prison
You need Jesus to save your soul.
Same, Metallica is like medicine, they have saved me through shit tons of depression
@@phaxad nah you need Metallica way more than Jesus
I do relate, friend
And then they nailed it
They ran over all limits of this music smashed all the rules and changed the world
How did they change the world?
@@srt4b they influenced thrash metal a lot yk
I could watch this backstage footage that's been showing up everywhere, all damn day. They'll always be my favorite. I love that they're letting more and more of this come out!
james tomando mate me da años de vida
Yo puse esa imagen de fondo de pantalla amigo jajajaaj
One wonders why they have a hard time remembering a song but these guys have over 100 original songs and the covers they do. They’ll play most of em during a tour. Its remarkable! Being in a band myself if we don’t play a song for a few weeks it’s rusty. Many metal bands do a whole tour playing the same show every night maybe 20 songs.
They have been playing these songs for more than 40 years bro
I love this band until the end, a true class act
Rob, the unsung hero.
Shit I’d be forgetting a shit load of riffs
Hetfield's look to start the count is crazy subtle. I wonder if it's like that on stage.
Sometimes
@@deadpool102192 how the fk would you know?
@@travprice3979 probably seen them a bunch
If I was Rob I’d say idk let’s call Jason and ask him 😅
Does Metallica needs to list to their older albums for Show Prep?🤔 Who cares, They still Rock🔥🤘
They totally need to, it's their good shit.
Shortest Straw! Damn you guys, I almost pulled a neck muscle sitting on the shitter!!! I've been listening to you dudes since day one, so yeah, I'm old AF too 🤟
Literally minutes. You can hear Jim Breuer on stage in the background at the end lol
The straw that should not be.

They played that at Golden One Center in Sacramento in 2019 I think and I was there. Even have the mp3 recording they allowed us to have. That clip they played to remember was from that show! F***ing awesome.
So did Robert just stand there and hold his bass so it sounds just like the album cut?
Listen to Robert. The bassist has to tie everything together and are more often than not correct.
Metallica is going to have to relearn a few songs for the upcoming no repeat weekend tour. Two completely different set list is alot more songs to remember how to play.
Are we sure everyone needs a microphone?- Lars Ulrich
I laughed so hard when he started playing a video of them playing it live so they could remember how they play it live😂
It’s bait and switch where it sounds like they’re going into Metal Militia and switch to Straw.
How could you get anything done. I would be fuckin around laughing. They all look like they're having fun
This kind of Metallica backstage video is so entertaining to me!
James drinking a chimarrão is the best part of this video, ever!
3:05-3:07 - cool version
Kirk be like: I can't remember anything...
but then did not forget to paint his nails.
Great now I’m going to be saying METAL STRAW!!
lars - 'isn't there a way for me not to remember the actual intro to this song that the entire internet watched me fuck up the mocap for'
Imagine how Dream Theatre feels
3:50 me after 3 months without playing
You’re never too big to practice! It’s great to see that they go through the process to get it right!
Anyone else remember when they were motion tracking Guitar Hero and Lars kept forgetting the intro?😂 This song has not been kind to them live.
"kirk I'm checking in with you, are you ok"
It's a shame legends can't live forever.
What are these series of videos from
Sure wish they would make their concert tickets affordable so I can go and even take my friend. I can't afford $1,000 for one ticket, let alone 2...😬
They are human like us...
Straw is a badass song guys. So underated 😢
Slowest straw 3:00
Shortest Straw the best song
So underrated
I love this band.
I love this it really shows they Work and Lars- such a slave driver!!!
Just showing they are human
Most of the songs from from AJFA are pretty complex and hard to remember, so this is understandable.
Straw militia...
I love these guys but, this could be a sign of AGE !!! No matter your still great !
They have 11 albums dude, that’s a lot of songs. Write a song and let 3 months go by and see if you remember how to play it. That’s not a sleight on you, it happens to everyone who writes. I have songs I wrote a year ago that I have no clue how to play right now.
Just play the damn intro you can do it
I remember in the guitar hero Metallica video game there's a video of lars relearning the album intro of shortest straw so he can motion capture it 😅
They played it in the first night of the 40th anniversary shows. They nailed it, totally.
Rob has slowly became my favorite member of the Almighty
I think he really knows all of the songs. The unsung hero for sure.
The man is a gift for sure
lmao Kirk ‘Ill figure it out’
GERIATRICA!!!!!
What's up with James cool little tablet set list?!!!
Lars had the same thing happen when they were doing the motion capture stuff for Rock Star....Lars couldn't remember how to play Shortest Straw then either. lol
And is it just me...or it Papa Het getting to be a little bit on the "Papa Pudgy" side?
This is from like 2019 when he was struggling with alcoholism again. He's in much better shape now.
You got to practice with the band. Practicing att home is good for endurance and ideas, but you gotta jam with the entire band for tightness.
hard to recognize it with bass guitar in it...
I'm so hyped for this tour its gonna be a blast
This video is proof that Metallica uses backing tracks.
Anybody heard Kirk's solo album? Pretty solid.
Oldness is a shipwreck! 😂
Oh and Damn James, watch out, you're getting belly fat!
Wouldn’t say it’s them “relearning”. More like them practicing.
This is clearly from years ago considering James is skinnier in 2023.
Kirk had Lars turned down. I mean... yeah, that's how he deals with these two idiots, James and Lars. :D
James just look right with an explorer body ESP…
Lars is forever eating or drinking something 😅😅
Drumming Metallica takes a ton of calories and bucket of sweat.
Please post the date of the jam, it helps understand when they jammed
Playing a song slower than normal is quite the departure.
Dawg they're grandparents give em a break
Plus its just rehearsal, I know they can still rock faster; listen to their latest albums.
Playing songs fast covers up a lot of mistakes.
Its really close to album speed. Maybe a couple bpm slower.
Aguante Papa Het Drinking 🇦🇷 🧉 Shortest Straw
0:40 Mate the power of Argentina !!! AGUANTE METALLICA :D !!
The réal intro is epic. But they don’t remember...?
"Metal straw" LOL that cracked me up 0:39
Why does Lars have to have a double bass instead of just a double pedal in the practice room
Does kirk actually have knee hole in track pants?? That's so poser.
@ATARAXIA Stop stealing content.
Rather see them struggle than use prerecorded bs like some doing
It's the ones in the middle that are fucking with them.
This is one of the worlst thumbnails ive ever seen

I've never heard metallica play so slow haha
Its not relearning but rerecording soud of concert)
Rob had to reboot Kirk
so sad that they dont do their little sick intro like it is recorded. this alternative is a bit weak.
I believe this was Sacramento 2017. I was there. They came on like 45 minutes late too
Can't be. James wasn't looking this fat and old yet. This must be 2019
poor Kirk lol
