Hey chums! To celebrate the 30 year anniversary of Metallica's glorious Master of Puppets record, Uncle Ben Eller here is gonna give you a lesson on how to play the dope opening licks of Kirk Hammett's main solo. There's some arpeggios, some legato, some bends, and some... weirdness. one lick in particular has evaded accurate transcription, but i may be onto something here. Watch and learn the solo secrets!!!
Playing my Suhr Modern Satin through an AWESOME hand built Cooper JTM45 clone, made by my buddy and amp tech extraordinaire Jon Cooper of Knoxville TN. Using a Wampler Pinnacle in front for the dirt plus a TC Electronics Flashback for delay. Sounds unreal!!!!

I think you are right on the money there. From one of the more popular guitar pro tabs you can find this information in the file:
"...I worked on the next solo for a couple of days - getting it tight was a real task for me. While recording the track, my hand accidentally pulled a string off the neck, and it grounded on the neck pick-up, giving me something like a high D. It sounded like I slid up to a super high note that isn't even on the neck, so we left it."
And it says that the source is from a GuitarWorld issue from '91

Speaking of Kirk, he wrote the best riff in this song. In my opinion. The pre-chorus riff.
"I remember getting home and working religiously to improve my technique. I was still living at my mom's in El Sobrante, but spending quite a bit of time up in Sonoma. I knew a guy with a recording studio there, so I'd hang out with him, play guitar, and just gather ideas together, one of which was the pre-chorus to "Master of Puppets", the "come crawling faster" part. Generally though, I was taking stock of my situation and catching up with friends at places like Ruthie's, or the Stone.."

He likes to play one step out of the box in so many of his solos. Sounds like he's somewhat lost the key and tries to figure it out. That's kind of cool.

" the string caught on my finger and fretted out over the pickup near the twenty-eighth fret, creating a supersonic microtone - like a high pitched squeal. I actually read an article in a metallica guitar issued magazine I found back in like 2006 where Kirk is talking about that exact weird part of the solo. His finger did in fact slip off the fret board and I quote “ in the midst of my phrasing” causing that noise to happen. But he liked that it gave a certain characteristic to the solo and they ended up keeping that cut.

You're exactly right. Kirk confirmed this in an interview that the squawk was an unintentional pulling The string off the neck. He said he wasn't able to recreate it. But it was perfect. The problem is, the official tab book misunderstood and tried to say that the harmonic is actually the result of Kirk pulling his string off and hitting the pickup. I can't speak to anyone else's guitar, but I find I can recreate the note roughly by pulling down when I'm on the 14th fret. In this scenario, I reckon it would vary depending on what guitar you're playing.

I can't speak to the weird "squawk" note covered in this lesson, but there's a crazy super high note a few measures later in the solo. I recall reading an interview with Kirk and James in some guitar magazine back in '86 or so when the album came out. When asked about that note, Kirk indeed said he inadvertently pulled the string off the board, causing it to fret out on the neck pickup. So you could be on to something.
