  • I use an old Dewalt DCD985 20V MAX electric drill with my dad's help to try out the Drill Paddle on a VERY small kayak in Casco Bay off Willard Beach near Portland Maine. I couldn't even carry a paddle and I had to get in and have him hand me the drill and propeller. But it was fast! And fun.
    I got it at the Drill Paddle Website: www.drillpaddle.com/
    Drill I used: Dewalt DCD985 20V Max...like this: amzn.to/3nB296D
    I think you could use a less expensive drill if you don't mind dropping from 2000RPM to 1500RPM and 450Wats to 300Wats. Here's one DCD771B 20V MAX amzn.to/3IgAPDW
    It’s also on Amazon but sometimes for a lot more then on the main website above: “Drill Paddle for Canoe, Kayak, Raft, Boat, Outdoors, Pontoons, Fishing Tubes, Watercraft, Dingy, Sailboat”: amzn.to/3e1UYzM
    Dewalt drills here on Amazon, but any drill or the right motor, will obviously work: amzn.to/3sFLkaN

    ~~~ ABOUT ME ~~~
    My wife and I are both educators. I focus on Educational Technology in K12 and Higher Education. We try and live a simple, sustainable, tech-savvy, and eco-friendly lifestyle in a medium town in Vermont, USA.
    We focus our middle-class income on education, nature, healthy food, and community. We try and create a family environment with very little commercial-laden media, while also using high tech and high-quality media to teach our kids and be entertained. We use a lot of streaming services and don’t have Cable TV. Striving for these goals involves a lot of “debate” between my wife and I. She’s in charge of keeping me from exposing the family to too much technology/media exploration and study. I’m in charge of pushing to understand and learn about how to use technology’s immense power for good and beat our kid’s friends to exposer and education about media, games, RUclips, etc.
    We live in a medium-sized town, in an old medium-sized house, on a medium-income. For those from afar, Vermont is located in the northeast part of the United States above New York City. Every year we have Summer’s heat and humidity, Fall’s colorful leaves, Winter’s snow, ice, freezing rain, hail, sleet, flurries, nor’easters, and freezing drizzle, followed by Spring’s melt mud madness. We are surrounded by trees, rivers, lakes, fields, and mountains. Vermont is known for its high-quality cheeses and Maple syrup, a tasty sugar liquid made from boiling down the sap that runs inside Maple trees when they are getting ready to make new leaves in the Spring.
    I think drills are very underrated power tools. You could convert them into many things as a main power source.
    Seems like it would be much better to use it in a pulling configuration instead of pushing. Much less sensitive to steering errors
    The only thing is if fish and game catch you doing that and the kayak isn't registered as a powered craft you can get a ticket. Yes they consider even that as a trolling motor. It happened to me in TN
      Kind of a gray area, because it's not affixed to the watercraft. If you only used it to fight the wind, the CO might be merciful.
    Hast du schon mal Getestet wie lange der Akkuschrauber Hält bis das Getriebe kaputt ist oder Heiß läuft oder Elektronik durchbrennt .. ich baue auch gerade einen Akku Drill Boot Motor mit einem RYOBI Akku Drill .
    • @calebjc
      I’ve run the Dewalt till the built-in circuit turns it off before it burns out. Unfortunately I didn’t time it but you can imagine that these drills are all meant for the job of screwing in the screws so depending on how hot the day is, it’s going to overheat pretty quick on full power without a break. The tactic I used was to run the drill to get the boat up to speed and then coast for a while, and repeat. That kept it from overheating.
      Did the drill ever seem over worked or over heated?
    • @calebjc
      @calebjc  Год назад
      Yeah, depends on how heavy the boat is and the wind but after about a minute with no break, there’s a circuit in the drill that shuts it off before it overheat. Soy what works is to use pulses of Say 10 seconds and then coast for a while and then 10 seconds
      It's an old Dewalt DCD985. But don't get a hammer drill version. Just a regular drill. I think you could use something less expensive like: Dewalt DCD771B 20V MAX
    Good way to attract shark attention.but in all seriousness, this has business potential...i.e. thru hull dc motor azimut drive powered kayak.
      Didn’t think about sharks! Yikes. There are more and more companies that make kayak motors I think. As batteries and solar get better it’s going to be fun!
