Rare Plant Tour | Grow Lights & Humidifiers for Indoor Houseplants | Jake Series Part I | Ep 27

- Lighting and humidity are frequently asked about by both beginning and experienced growers and collectors. How do we supplement lighting in low light situations or environments or seasons? What grow lights are recommended? What is a good humidity percentage or level for rare tropical houseplants such as monstera, philodendron, anthuriums, and alocasias? In this episode, I do a plant tour of Jake’s place and discuss these questions with him. Jake is @keepyourplantson_la on Instagram. Great guy; amazing plants; and a wealth of indoor houseplant knowledge and care tips!

I live in Indonesia, specifically in Pontianak, right on that 0 latitude equator line haha, so warm and humid, not only your plants that thriving, but your acne as well 😅
Hahaha this comment made me laugh a lot. Good luck to your plants and your acne 🤣🤣. Thanks for watching and following along friend!
Instablaster...
I had a desk once...
And a vanity...
Now? Just plants.
Haha I used to have walking space... but... who needs to walk 🤷🏻♂️
Had to pause the video because damn, that Monstera dubia is huge! 😳 💚
I know!! It’s one of his most ridiculous plants, even compared to his other ridiculous plants haha
I’m here for this plant dad content. 🙌🏼
Great video! Thank you for sharing, great info.
So amazing ...I'm so inspired
Thankyou for this plant tour!
Thank you for the video/ It's great to see it in detail. I have been following him for quite some time!
Oh we haven’t seen anything in detail yet 😉
U have such amazing plants I love plants and thank u for sharing this video I love ur vids
Great vodeo and good information like always i learn something new everytime i watch your videos and i love how his whole set up i was able to get some ideas for my set up thanks for sharing ❤
Yay glad you got something out of it. I agree it’s fun to see different setups :) Hope you enjoy the rest of the series. Cheers!
Thank you for this video!!
I have been having issues how to grow my indoor plants well.‘so this really helps me.
To see all that plants😍😍😍beautifull
OMG such a great video with lots of good advice! I started following his IG acc, thank you so much for sharing!
That Monstera dubia is a monster!!!Thank you for showing us those beautiful plants.
We’ll see more of that monster dubia in episode 9 or 10 🤗
your videos are awesome!!!
😂Jake’s place! Love the music on the intro! “Invasion of the plants” 🪴 🌱
Beautiful
PLEASE...I'm begging you to do a tutorial on how you made the metal arms for your exposed bulb grow lights. I'm obsessed. It looks so chic. I think many people would love to see a video like that. There aren't any videos on RUclips on how to make grow lights look good....and all without putting holes in your walls?!? 😍😍
I will try to put that on the list haha. There’s quite a pipeline of stuff already lined up for the next few months 😅🤗.
I agree I love them
That Dubia ❤️ I was t into them that much before but wow
Nice!!!
I have a lot of tropical rainforest plants that thrive in my home as long as I don’t forget to water them and I live in the vegas desert. Propagations and rehabs on the other hand, I find need very high humidity. Also smaller plants that I want to grow fast I might dome for a few months. Begonias I agree, alot of them do thrive under a dome. I love how everyone grows a bit differently and it works for them. He’s got an amazing collection!
I used the Vick’s humidifier when my kids where young
This was so interesting! Not just because pretty plants! But also how people in different parts of the world keep their plants healthy. I live in a part of the world where the baseline humidity tends to be about 55-60% so I run a humidifier but I don't need it on constantly and 1 humidifier is enough (I use a Levoit as well! I love that you can set the humidity level in it and let it do its thing!) My problem tends to be light. I live in a foggy/cloudy country (northern hemisphere), so in winter the light becomes a serious problem (gets bright at about 8am and dark at about 3.30pm and there are very few sunny days here in winter) and I have to use more growlights than I'd like. I'd love to live in a place that had better light and more sun!
I also have that indoor greenhouse thingy that Jake has, and I find it amazing for my higher humidity plants as well. It's not the prettiest but I'll replace it at some point and it really gets the job done in the meantime.
I love Jake's layout though, it's gorgeous! Thank you for this vid! I have to go check out your other vids now. :)
yo, love that Chicago El artwork on the wall!
Frugal! Not cheap! It’s a good way to be . Thanks for the video
Haha thanks! Thanks for watching and following along!!
The info on humidity was great!! I'm a beginner!
You are most welcome! It’s a commonly asked topic so glad we got to cover it a bit. Cheers!
Fantastic video! And for this I'm thankful I live in Louisiana, lol. On a dry day, like today, I have the windows open and the humidity is at 69% in my plant room. Which is another thing I found so funny about this video. My office is also shared with my plants, lol. It's my plant room/office, haha!
Haha I think the home plant office is the way to go for sure haha 🤗🤗. Thanks for watching and following along! Cheers!
I understand completely. It quickly becomes an addiction lol
I wish I was friends with these guys Jimmy and Jake!!!!!
Three humidifiers in that small room may seem like a lot but when you take into account his plant load, which is A LOT, then the ratio is most likely just right, Whereas 3 humidifiers with three plants are overkilling it.
His plants are pretty amazing.
That’s true. His plant really reflect his skills, passions, and efforts. Hope you enjoy the rest of the series 🤗🤗
I like ur videos...newbie here start my hobbies😂😂😂
In New Zealand, we need dehumidifier to keep the humidity to stay 55-75%..
loved the video! New to your channel! :)
Thanks so much! Welcome!
I just found your channel and I’m absolutely loving the contents you have. I also love the way you explain things. I was wondering how do I use the humidifier, do I have to run for certain hours a day or all day (sorry for a dumb question I’m still learning
Also how do I use the humidifier without damaging or causing moulds in the house
I love the plants!! But omg where did he get his shirt??
He has a gorgeous collection. I look forward to seeing more. I have had a few issues with my Levoitt such as it spraying water all over the floor. I got an Air Innovations humidifier and it has the same automated feature as the Levoitt, higher tank capacity and I like that it as an extension for the noozle. It is not as pretty as the Levoitt though. Perhaps because I am in the Northeast, I find that my humidity can get really high like in the 90s if I don't monitor it as then there is an issue with mold. For begonias and Philodendrons like Mamei, I put them under cloches or glass terrariums.
Paula Bollers I had read that people were having issues with it spraying water on the floor, so I got the ontel breathe easy humidifier that has an extension nozzle as well. It’s high capacity and I really love it.
@@shelley6279 I am glad we found other options! I called Levoitt today about it and they told me to clean it with bleach and if it still wets the floor called them back. Lol.
Paula Bollers me tooooooo! And that’s interesting! 🤨🤔🥴 Good Luck! 🍀
Oh I haven’t had issues with the Levoit but then again I haven’t had mine for too long. I will look into the air innovations though! Higher capacity with automaticity sounds like a win in my book!
@@LegendsOfMonstera Oh I love it. It has 2 tanks and 10L capacity. I fill it maybe every 2 weeks!
very good video! thumbs up for your extra editing effort.. .-)* ...
Haha thank goodness the editing is getting easier. Can’t imagine doing something like this when I just started out. Glad it came out well.
Why people hate on purple lights? They work very well to bring out more green on very variegated plants it seems.
I’ve recently found you and am really enjoying your videos.
I’m scared to buy a new humidifier. I have a cheap one that is for babies and I ended up messing up my ceiling. The paint is all bubbled up. The humidifier is on the floor and not close to the ceiling and I only had it on for a few hours. Any problems with leaving yours on all the time?
I really like your light set up in the living room. I believe it’s the first lights you show. They are single bulbs on white pipe (?). Where did you buy those?
Hm I have not had issues yet but I agree that it can mess with the ceiling if it’s too close. I should probably move it lower haha. I’ll be rearranging some plants soon anyway. Mine isn’t on 24hrs as it is automatic and only turns on when the humidity is below what I set it at, which is 65%.
The lights and the fixtures are from amazing. The white standing light/lamp is just something I bought off amazon that matches my decor (or at least I think it matches my decor 🤣). Nothing special. Simple and cheap.
How to use grow light and humidifier? Can they be used at the same time or separately in different time of the day? When is the best time to use the grow light? Sorry, so many questions 😘
oh emmm geeeee I know he had an insane collection but not an INSAAAAAAAAAANE collection! wowowowowowwwww
Haha we haven’t even gotten to the individual plants yet
Is there a part 2? I see 2 part 1's.
Great content. None of the links you put under your name work. They bring me back to this video. When I see people with lots of plants and racks of plants like that. I think they will one day want to sell plants eventually and getting set up with their propagations. lol
Sorry about the links. Will look into it 😭
Is a warm mist humidifier best in the winter if the humidity seems to get to low for indoor plants?
Its winter here in Canada. Just wanted to know what's jakes and your settings on your levoit humidifier with regard to using warm or cool mist? What's the best mist(cool or warm) for tropical plants like orangw bird of paradise, fiddle leaf fig, monstera and alocasia amazonica. Humidity levels in our house is down at 33% because of winter and that heaters are on making the air dry. I will greatly appreciate it if you could give advice or tips. Thanks.
"Holy bejeebas" Hahaha
Great video! New sub here!! XO
Thanks so much for joining and following along =)
Legends Of Monstera My pleasure! Thank you for taking a unique approach and NOT regurgitating the same-ish content🙏🏽🌼
😍
If you guys have hardwood floors, please think carefully before getting plants required high humidity.
Do you have any winged termites coming into your house due to higher humidity? At least during the hot months.
Economic and practical is definitely the way to go for most of us everyday working folks here.
Can you use a normal led daytime light bulb ok to use ?
Wow, the Rhaphidophora (shingle plant) leaves are so huge.
The shingle plant is a monstera dubia 🤗🤗
I currently live in a wooded area, and making it even worse, the entire perimeter of my house has 3 foot eaves. This has been terrible for my plants, has even meant death for some. I came here with almost 80 Hoyas, have maybe 20 now. I tried a big grow bulb in a recessed fixture over my kitchen sink, and it has really helped, but not for all the plants I’ve put under it, only the ones that have lower light requirements. Some just have to have the real thing. I put a lot of them outside for the summer, and they do better in semi shade than in the dark house….but I think I need to just stop buying plants that need high light.
I want to know why he doesn’t like the purple light. Was it just aesthetics? Or is it not as good?
How does he handle air movement? Does he have a fan or ceiling fan?
I have levoit too. The sensor on that and my meter for temperature and humidity doesn’t match up. It’s like 10-20% different so not sure which is correct. ? And do you run humidifier all day and night? I heard running at night time will cause mold and fungus, is that true?
Where can we get that tshirt? I didnt see it in any of the links
Hi, do you use normal home LED bulbs for the supplemental light that you mentioned? Or do you use grow-light LED lights?
Hope this episode helps. Best one I’ve seen about grow lights:
P3. (MUST WATCH FOR MONSTERA OWNERS) Guide to Grow Lights for Indoor Houseplants | Plant Professor
@@LegendsOfMonstera I rewatched it now. The difference of LED grow light and non grow lights were not mentioned unfortunately.. I actually did a 3 hr experiment earlier and proved that yes, plants do reach out and react to normal LED 6.5k colored lights. Even did a timelapse too :) Thanks for all the vids, I also grow in a function over form manner.
Hi, I’ve been lurking around your plants for a while now😬. The display is amazing. There is one of your plants that I would love to acquire for my own collection. In this video, it’s placed up high next to the narrow window and has really long pointed leaves. Can you please tell me its name. Love watching your videos and have learned a lot about tropical plants from you. 🙏
Hi Annette. I’m not sure which plant you are referring to. If you let me know with the time stamp where the plant appears, I can let you know. Cheers!
@@LegendsOfMonstera Okay, thank you. I see it at 6.01 in your house on the top window shelf on the right and also at 0.56 with Jake holding one.
Oh that’s an anthurium warocqueanum, also known as the queen anthurium. Cheers!
Legends Of Monstera thank you so much. On the hunt now for a Queen Anthurium 🧐
With regards to supplemental lights, do you have to keep plants who don't like direct sunlight out of the direct shine of the bulb? Or since it isn't true sunlight, does this not matter to the plant in the same way?
My experience is that plants will turn pink when exposed to more light than they need. The green in the leaves also turn lighter.
@@LegendsOfMonstera super helpful, thank you!
I noticed that he has plants on a hydroponic pot with just a saucer. How does he make that work with a reservoir nutrient water on the bottom? Is it enough space?
Nah, he just has a really loose mix and waters often. Plus he doesn’t mind if the saucers are wet. We do get more into it in later episodes. Cheers!
@@LegendsOfMonstera Thank you Dr. Nguyen for always answering so fast. I appreciate your awesome videos!
I saw a begonia pavonina in light? They get bluer in low low light
Hm I don’t specifically remember where he has his but I do recall we did talk a bit about it several months ago.
Not sure if anyone can answer this. Which is better for houseplants? Cool mist or Warm mist?
My understanding is that warm mist helps increase humidity more, but cool mist is... cooler ^_^
Hi, had a question is it bad for me to use cool mist humidity only?
I only use cool mist
This music?
This is a great video, but why do so many RUclipsrs link to Amazon for everything, when we should be supporting small business???
Pro Tip: Use your guest’s eyes suffering as a cheap & easy gauge for light requirements 😉
Does that much humidity ruin your home's walls?
whats the name of claiming plant on the wall,? is it monstera or ivy?
Not sure which one you are referring to. Let me know the time stamp. He doesn’t have any ivy that I’m aware of.
@@LegendsOfMonstera 3;30 min.....this plant looks so amazing
It’s a monstera dubia. Most don’t look like that though lol
Ur funny. Lol.
I need better lights. Where are the links? :)
Who are you and how did you get the link to the video? Lol did Jake give it to you?
Links are in the description if you scroll down a bit. Also still working on the rest. Won’t go public till probably end of Nov
@@LegendsOfMonstera My name is Marty and I'm just a plant lover looking at RUclips videos on plant care. Your video on variegated syngonium came up in my feed, so after I watched that, I checked out your channel. You sound surprised I watched your video. Did you not mean to upload it?
I am surprised because this video isn’t supposed to be public yet lol
Oh maybe it’s popping up as my “‘most recently uploaded” lol. I need to change the status then. Well glad you liked the sneak peep my friend 🤣🤣
Could you share the name of the plant on top of your fridge? :)
A few people have asked me but I honestly have no clue. I don’t even remember where or when I got it haha
@@LegendsOfMonstera it looks a lot like anthurium insigne! Beautiful plant.
Automation
Levoit never last for me, died after 4 months.
I have two and they are still chugging along. They are good, but not as crazy and perfect as most people make them seem.
@@LegendsOfMonstera if they are mist not ultrasonic you end up with alot of "soaky" like floors, etc.
I have most of my plants by some huge floor to ceiling windows, which makes me feel too exposed with grow lights on. I wish I could use grow lights without getting stared at by my neighbors.
Haha my grow lights blind my neighbors in the morning and into the evening. But I suppose it’s good security 🤣
why do you start your videos saying you're a doctor? and, a doctor of what?
It’s better than starting off as “I’m not a botanist” haha. Also I add medical analogies in several of my episodes. Cheers!
