    I think you hit the nail on the head on the spirit of the plant community- sharing knowledge and passion for plants and not just showing off rare collections with empty content.

    I love all the discussion of the actual community. It makes me feel better about literally only having 5 plants, and the concept of meeting people as such a newbie

    I wear my emotions on my sleeve anyway, but I think I am not the only one. I found this episode heart-warming. Every once in awhile when I join a community for some reason I have a feeling of "coming home." I started collecting & enjoying houseplants in my teens, but took a 20 year break to raise my kids. I started noticing the renewal just as my youngest turned 20 last spring. I have been very happy since reconnecting and resuming my collecting. Thanks for the content Jimmy. You are just awesome...and so is Jake.

      Aw thanks for following along and the kind words Amelia. Like you’ve realized, there are bigger priorities and responsibilities in life than plants for some if not most of us. We will touch on it in a future episodes but not all of us have the time and resources capable of sustaining a collection like Jake’s, even if all our thumbs were as green. Cheers!

    Hello from a new subscriber and fellow (although super tiny) plantuber from Greece!! 😊
    I started my plant collection a few years back, then I began watching videos, mostly to save my drowning plants, made quite a few friends, I then finally started my own channel, I keep meeting awesome people and my collection is now more than 500+ plants!! It's been a great community!!
    Have a great day!! 😊

  • @Finkeldinken

    Nerdy communities are the best!
    I've experienced it in the aquarium and aquascaping hobby for sure. The plants and fish I got to experience through that is amazing. Same in the watercolor art community! People are amazing if you let them be.
    A lot of us are introverts, but if you're also what I'd call an "intense hobbyist" just saying hi and admiring someone else's pride of their collection will bring you back so much knowledge and very often a plant on top, or whatever the hobby you're in celebrates.
    For new people: Seriously, just go to those events if you can! Just saying "I'm completely new at this, I have no idea what I'm doing, but I am hooked!" will get you so far, you have no idea.
    Love these videos!

    Jimmy thanks for the refreshing content, don't get me wrong I enjoy the plant tours, re-potting, and propagation videos on RUclips but there is something to be said about the format you use in the "Jake Series". The format keeps it interesting, sort of like a podcast with a conversation between two people. Thanks again Thumbs Up!!!

      Aw thanks so much! I am trying to provide something different because tbh I’m not that much a fan of plant tours, repotting, and propagation vids. Not to be snobby but I feel they are very superficial. Maybe the medical side of me is demanding more. Then again, I have and plan to make some ridiculous and senseless content 🤣🤣

    This put my mind at ease. This week I had to throw away the majority of my plant collection because of bacterial blight that spread everywhere. At first it was purely just frustrating but yesterday I broke down in tears after having to throw away my Prince of Orange philodendron. I really just wanted to pitch everything and call it done. Of course it’s not rare or anything, but he was one of my favorites. My Rhap Tetrasperma has it and I’m more upset over a silly little POA Philo. I started collecting plants to help with my anxiety and depression but lately it’s felt very disheartening. I’ve been watching loads of videos today just to help me keep going with the hobby. Even though this week has been a huge bummer, the plant community has been so positive and helpful that I can’t see myself giving up. Plants and the plant community as a whole have really given me some peace so I’m trying hard to take it in stride and start over.
    But anyways, this channel is really great!! You cover topics not many people talk about and other topics in ways others haven’t; which is super refreshing and something I’ve needed. Thank you!

    • @LegendsOfMonstera
      @LegendsOfMonstera  5 лет назад +1

      Aw thanks so much for following along. My sympathies to your collection; that would bum any of us out. It ruins my day every time I find root rot, and I still do on occasion due to my planting methods. Bugs remain a constant annoyance to me and you’ll see in future episodes that they are a problem for Jake too. People we consider better planters than us are simply people who have already made our mistakes. Hope your collection bounces back better than ever. Cheers!

      @breefenton8955 5 лет назад

      Legends Of Monstera Thank you! That really puts it in to perspective for me (: I’m still learning and I never even knew bacteria and fungus were things I needed to keep an eye out for, I was only concerned with bugs. But now that I know, I can try my best to avoid it in the future and grow from it. Recollecting plants can’t be all that bad, am I right? Haha.

    Hey! I’ll have to watch your plant swap and aeroid show now. Your friend has beautiful plants and great advice. I’m glad you have found a fulfilling hobby and I enjoy your insights. I find myself nodding a lot during your videos.
    I first got into plants about 20 years ago. 😬 I’m that old?! My college boyfriend’s mom was SUPER into plants. Like all kinds! From cactus to EVERYTHING! I felt so alive in her home. She lived in Seattle and there were a few great shops there so I caught the plantbug! There are so many awesome people I connected with young and old because of our common interest.
    I like how social media has given us the chance to bring cameras into homes and we can learn from each other! We plant nerds gotta stick together!! 😂My hubby is super supportive of my hobby but honestly he is not into it like I am. That’s okay! I’m not interested in all of his hobbies either. So
    I like to see what other plant fiends are up to. It’s very fun!
    Anyways, I’m rambling now. Thanks you’re awesome. 🌱♥️

    • @LegendsOfMonstera
      @LegendsOfMonstera  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks so much for taking the time for such a personal comment. I think we all have fond plant memories in some form or another, and tbh are probably not shared often enough. The plant hobby now definitely isn’t what it used to be due to social media and cameras. I’m glad to be able to have an iPhone and passionate plant friends with great collections to share with the world.

    • @gratefulMOMent
      @gratefulMOMent 5 лет назад

      Legends Of Monstera yeah, in response to the plant community being different...I’m a huge fan of big beasty plants. Like an aloe that has grown so large it is half crawling out of the pot. Or a woody snaggly stem on a jade plant that has seen some things 😂😉😉 I am intrigued by how strong and adaptable our green friends are! Nowadays I’ve seen a lot about the lust for perfection in a plant. Which is beautiful! But not real unless you got mad skills like you & your buddy. Plus humidifiers and lights. To be clear I’m not bashing anyone. I don’t get that vibe from you. But I do get it from browsing Instagram sometimes.

    breaks my little heart that capitalism got to the plant community before I could get a Spiritus Sancti :( There's a spiritus on eBay going for almost 4k right now... 2 years ago it was on my wish list and I could never find it but when I did it was only about 500... Stupid silly me thinking that that was too expensive LOL if only I knew
    edit: just saw the end of the video where u thanked your viewers :) Thank YOU for taking the time to film and edit on top of a busy schedule to make really great content!

    • @LegendsOfMonstera
      @LegendsOfMonstera  5 лет назад +1

      Haha I think the same about var adansonii and obliqua. But then again, I also remind myself that even 500 for a plant WAS ridiculous back then. It was even ridiculous last year. It’s really not only very recently with this craze, with its appreciation for plant rarity and origins and collectibility, that people feel it’s ok and acceptable to pay that much for a plant. Cheers!

    This was an interesting one and I hadn’t thought about the social aspect of this community other than ogling the various amazing pictures on IG/RUclips and getting ideas on what I want next. My question would be if most folks keep their personal IG about separate from their planty ones. I’ve recently started to post pictures of my plants on my IG account but I’ve kept my account private because I mix other pictures of myself, family, and friends, and am deciding if it’s worth making a new IG account entirely dedicated to plants. I’m curious what you and others do about this 😊

    • @LegendsOfMonstera
      @LegendsOfMonstera  5 лет назад

      I think your question is something a lot of people are dealing with. Jake mentioned it to me just a few weeks ago. I think it depends on whether you want your IG to be a “plant account” or a “plant personality account”? I personally have little issue sharing some personal stuff on my plant account, but then again I don’t share much personal stuff anyway. I guess if you are a frequent poster of personal things, it may dilute the plantness of your account. Yeah, think it’s a personal question lots of people are asking nowadays.

    I was pretty pleased to hear Jake say that he killed a bunch of plants. I'm mostly an orchid person (starting to diversify more into other plant families) and one of the best orchid growers I know said you're not really an expert unless you've killed at least a hundred plants, and you're not a true professional unless you've killed at least a thousand. So what James and you said really reminded me of this. I'm digging your channel.

    Super interesting content. But it’s very annoying to hear you only waiting to talk instead of truly listening to him. Lots of uh huh and yups behind the camera that were very unnecessary instead of giving the spotlight to the guy you were there to interview talk. Maybe just things to keep in mind next time you conduct an interview. Good luck, doing great otherwise!

    • @LegendsOfMonstera
      @LegendsOfMonstera  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the feedback. Though it seems like it, this was not intended to be an interview or anything close to what these episodes turned out to be. It was originally a “let me come over and show your collection”. You are probably going to be annoyed with the future episodes also so be forewarned. Also, not quite sure if things will improve much in the future because I don’t plan to do interviews but more of chats I have with my plant friends. Cheers!

      1. The Etsy is a partnership I have with growers and collectors in FL trying to provide domestically sourced plants. The domestic part is the reason for the higher pricing because the cost of acquiring these plants are simply higher.
      2. There are plenty of other plant shops and places to buy plants out there. If they are domestically sourced and have lower prices, then please support them. There are also international options for those who want even lower prices. We are not trying to manipulate customers or prices.

    Actually my opinion has changed, or more specifically corrected. I knew I felt something wrong with that last few vids, and I thought it was Jake. But it's not, Jake seems more likable and easier going by the vid. But YOU continually INTERRUPT him, or TALK OVER HIM!!!!! That shit is annoying as hell. LET HIM SPEAK!!!! Remember you are here to interview HIM!!!! YOU are NOT the story here... So jesus, find some self awareness, and STFU once in a while and let someone else speak. Cheers~!
