He may be the most interesting artist ever. Country didn't want him, rock didn't either and he wasn't folk. He was his very own thing. Amazing. To me he was a tropical country rock folk kinda artist. My point is he was his own and there will never be another anything like him.

That's very valid point. John Denver was a lot like that as well. I still miss him so much. Really though it's testament to both of them that they both had their own unique and really dedicated fan bases and they were both in the game so long. Genre is getting more and more fluid. It kind of proves what I have thought all along, it was contrived by radio and recording industry who needed to lump music into categories in order to showcase and sell it. Buuuut radio is dead. And albums are sold mostly digitally. Bands broker and promote their own music and the fans decide what they like without near as much business influence. It's about time. Let the artist do their art.

@@sebastianositaliano6360 oh yeah Prine too. Good call! I think the best fit for any of these guys was that singer songwriter thing. Jackson Browne. Tom Petty. John Mellencamp, Paul Simon. Jim Croce, Cat Stevens, Delbert McClinton, Bruce Hornsby, Keb Mo. They all crossed a lot of boundaries thank goodness. It is what made them so special.

After all the playing we ran out money (Did too much fishing and other stuff. After that we went back to Texas and got on with our lives…
However; I never stopped going down there through all the years and now keep my boat “Sacrifice” down there. We sail to the Dry Tortuga’s and over to the Bahamas. Yes, Jimmy Buffet is still 😊number one on our playlist.

Jimmy Buffett’s quintessential song I believe. As a young songwriter, this song and many others are always meant to be played on the acoustic guitar, in a matter to tell a story through feeling and artistry. As stated in other comments, Jimmy routinely performs this song with different improvisations… always a good time, however this version may be the finest orchestration of lyric and instrument dynamically captured by modern recording methods…. Perfection. I love the purity, solemnness of this song and the picture it paints. I too identify with the story it tells, on many levels. Although I’ve heard it 1000 times never get tired of it… I cannot recall very many songs that achieve this. Jimmy Buffett’s Pirate at 40 is a gift to those us who understand and identify with the story.
I don’t imagine Jimmy has all that many performing years left in him… and ultimately when Jimmy finally sets sail and leaves this planet, it will be a sad day for all of us, enjoy him while he’s still here! Well done, sir, a true artist and phenomenal songwriter.

Almost (probably all) his songs, I was there. Sailing the islands starting early 80s, the in and outs of life, "I've see it all," he captured the realness of life, of life of a sailor. Even "Cheese Burger In Paradise," a man can only eat so much lobster, grouper and conch (almost). Even kept me focused on "why we ride the carousel" while undergoing radiation procedure for 3 months (choice of what to listen to while lying there). Almost selfish to say he will be missed but I say it with love, appreciation, a shared knowing . . . Oh, and slather the sun screen, skin can treatment gets old.

Sitting up in Canada looking at a beautiful sunny day without a cloud in sight. The snow is beautiful, with temperatures around 0C or 32F. However, when this song comes on, I'm transported to a beautiful beach down south. RIP Jimmy, fair winds and following seas!🍹🦜

Don't think when I ever go out on the water I won't somehow think of you and this song, as well as some others. As Bob Hope said Thanks for the memories! Fair winds & following seas Jimmy! My all time favorite song as I have been blessed to have seen Jimmy so many times as I grew up in the panhandle of Florida born and raised in Gulf Breeze, FL.
I then relocated down here to the Keys for a while then back to St Petersburg.
Currently I went back to the Island of Cozumel as I have always been a wanderer, but will have Jimmy by my side thru his music!
