Years ago, I found myself at the muffler shop, where I witnessed an amusing exchange. The gentleman manning the counter took a phone call and incredulously relayed, "So you're telling me that ever since I replaced the muffler that fell off, your shocks squeak?" He speculated that perhaps the squeaking went unnoticed previously due to the absence of the muffler. The comical expression on his face added an extra layer of amusement to the situation.
I hate it when they bring it to you and the gas tank is sitting on empty. Most of the time you have to road test a vehicle before and after to make sure it's properly repaired, and it's hard to do when it's on empty. I have actually had to take it to a gas station and put fuel in it so that it doesn't shut down during the check to see what the problem is. It wastes time and that's a problem for me.
As an ex Senor Master tech with ford, You hit the nail on the head with every point. I can relate heavily with the hoarder situations, and the wheel lock keys. I also might add, the customers that keep unsecured , loaded firearms inside there vehicles, can be tricky aswell, and not my favorite vehicles to touch. Thanks for the videos!
There are tons of mechanics who are felons and you put their well being at risk when you leave your gun in a car. If they get pulled over and searched they are screwed. Be a responsible gun owner. Take them out.
Try working flat rate and working on cars and trucks all day, 75% of us mechanics won’t give a rats ass about our own vehicles other than making sure they get us from point A to B. We will always wait until it’s something super major and then do something about it.
I’m a tech in the marine industry and can totally relate, it’s really comical to listen to things the customer says is wrong vs what is actually the problem.
Can totally understand those pet peeves. Mine...when service writers fail to write down a detailed description of the customer's complaint. For example, say the customer comes in and says "my AC works for an hour, then starts blowing warm air".... and the service writer just puts "AC INOP" on the RO. That practice often results in "no problem found", which is frustrating to the customer.
Been there done that, more than once on my F250 and now it's out of warranty and all of a sudden problem found in which that problem existed from the day I drove it off the lot new..
Mason , thanks from a former Ford tech and service advisor. Some customer vehicles were so nasty, we turned them away but some we did not. Also, your "since you touched my car" comments revealed what some folks try to put over on us. Really enjoy your videos, keep 'em coming!
This hits home omg my exact thoughts after 50 years I finally just tell people it’s cheaper to get a guaranteed diagnostics than the part store says it’s this part.
Your first pet peev is exactly the same as mine!! Its so sad how some folks treat their vehicle. That and trying to do something in the trunk when its packed full of junk!!
Brother you are on point! I've been a technician for over 30 years and I can tell you I have experienced the exact customers you have. A day in the life of an auto technician .. like your videos keep em coming
It goes both ways my friend! I just had to diagnose a second problem on my F150 caused by my mechanic who used aftermarket parts. I could go on, but he's been fixing my stuff for 20+ years, so no biggie...
i love the people that demand a tire rotation and their wheel lock is in the trunk underneath $500 worth of groceries or trunk full of suit cases you name it. if that trunk is full im not doing your rotation you can empty it and bring it back. but yes all your points are correct.
Locking lug nuts: It is a complaint that should be aimed at the service writers-they need to ask every single customer for lug key-both when they call for an appt and when they bring the car in. They have never asked where is the key when I have brought in my car, and if I tell them at writeup time where I put the lug key they ignore me. As a customer with car trouble, last thing we are thinking about.
I had one. Did a oil change. Came back a few days later very very pissed off saying after we changed the oil the windshield is leaking and was demanding a new windshield😂
I really enjoy hopping in a vehicle for a test drive.(you have to verify the problem FIRST) And the damn thing is running on fumes, the gas gauge doesn't even budge. My second worst nightmare is smells. I'm not talking about the ones with 26 tree air fresheners hanging from the mirror to cover up the dope smell. The ones that bother me are the ones that douche themselves in the most obnoxious perfume or cologne that money can buy. You can usually spot them when you look in the window and they have a half gallon bottle of the crap in the cup holder. Another one that gets me are windows that are so dirty from vaping, smoking or spraying perfume that you have to use a snow scraper to clear the inside so you can see out. And don't even get me started on pets. I have dogs and cats and they occasionally go for a ride with me. But I will never have enough pet hair on my seat to knit an afghan. Or have the windows so dotted with dog snot that they look like a two year old got ahold of a bingo dobber. OGM, I have to stop, my blood pressure is spiking. Why can't I leave this crap at work?
My favorite is whenever they bring me a car that another shops been working on and couldn’t fix. I love other shops sloppy seconds. Don’t bring your 70k diesel to joes tire shop for repair
I am a Journeyman Automotive Tech up here in 🇨🇦 with 30 years behind me and i absolutely agree with all of yours. Ex Ford Senior Tech for 18 years and i went through everything you described. I have had cardboard boxes with parts in the trunk and was supposed to repair the issue. Last 12 years have been in Fleet services and repair. Currently at a auction site. The units i have seen would disgust folks. I quit doing any sort of side work due to the ever since club that folks play. Definitely appreciate the value and tips that you share as it helps me to keep ontop of some things. I have alot to remember being in the auction world so every little bit helps. Thanks! ❤️.
The ever since customer is 60% to 70% of customers..and usually it’s ever since you did this and the repair was over 6 months to a year ago. My question always is “why didn’t you bring it in when it first started happening” knowing we give a 6 month warranty on any repair we do if we are at fault. It’s literally people trying to get crap for free!
Sorry for my own rant. Yep, I work on some nasty stuff. I always tell them next time they're getting charged for cleaning and dealing with the crap. Lately, I've been telling them to wash the outside, especially if I'm doing suspension/brake work. Sucks having dirt caked on everything, falling in your face, getting the shop dirty. Wheel lug nuts. I've had tire shops not put the wheel lock back in the glove box. Now I have to check to make sure I have it. If you go back later 50/50 chance they'll say they have it or put it back in the glove box. I hear the "ever since" often. I've gotten to where I now ask them if anything else is wrong and if I find something wrong when pulling it in, I call them and tell them, "Hey, you know this is broke." People tell me to replace a part and that's all they want me to do. I tell them before hand that I didn't check it and if that's not the issue, they still have to pay to fix the right problem. I get told all the time, "Hey, since youtube shows it only takes 5 min to do it, shouldn't cost much right?" I reply "Guess you can do it yourself if it's that easy." They normally reply, "I don't want to do it, that's why I brought it to you." I tell them, "I don't work for free just like you don't." "It's been doing the same thing ever since I picked it up from you, two yrs ago." "So your not going to charge me to fix it, right?" "The noise is coming from the left rear." Actually coming from front right. "Hey, my a/c isn't cold now and you just worked on it." "Yeah, I changed your brake pads and didn't touch your a/c." I've literally had people tell me their a/c was ice cold, I lift the hood and there isn't even a compressor on it, then they ask me what did I do with it. ---One of the biggest things is. "While you're in there."--- It turns a 1hr quote into a 5hr job, then they ask why it's so high when I quoted 1hr. People also ask me to come to their house and fix it, that it shouldn't cost them as much because I can use their tools and electricity. I have people every day trying every angle to get something cheaper. I'll give someone a quote and they say they'll drop it off around 5pm(today being a tue). Two weeks later on sat, they drop it off unannounced and ask me if they can have it back by sunday night so they can get to work. After dealing with these things, nonstop for yrs and yrs, it wears you out and you just get tired of it all. I've gotten to where I choose what I work on, when I work on it, and how long it sits there. When my son told me he wanted to be a mechanic, I didn't know what to say. I dreaded the fact that it's low pay, people are always trying to get over on you, it's a dirty job, and it wears you out. Not to mention the cost of tools and your always buying them. I don't really want my kid to walk in my shoes. Now, if I can somehow get him to right away own the shop and just pay people to get dirty, that may be OK. The problem with that is, I had a big shop at one time and never found a mechanic worth their weight. I had 8 mechanics at one time and only one made me money. The others all had comebacks, tore stuff up, shorted things out, took way too long, etc etc. People love mechanics to fix their vehicles but always complain about the cost. To me, mechanics have more debt than the average person for their job. Schooling/certs cost money, tools cost money, a shop with equipment and electricity cost money. Mechanics clothes get ruined often with one job. And it's often either real hot or real cold in the shop. It sucks working in freezing or heat wave temps.
A couple of your comments bring up a question that I have never been able to figure out (not a mechanic, but have some understanding / ability ... and I know when to take it to a pro). How do mechanics actually afford to pay for tools and still eat, pay rent, own a vehicle, afford kids, blah, blah, blah, and more? It just doesn't seem that a low paid mechanic can afford the tools necessary to do the work!
@@sbdragoo4463 They can't afford the tools. They rely on financing and often spend their entire career in debt, most of them end up in debt equal to the cost of a house over their career. You never stop buying tools and you don't make half of the hourly wage you should be. The biggest irony is that federal law mandates that the employer is responsible for any tool an employee needs to do their job, yet for some reason, auto mechanics continue to spend tens of thousands of dollars.
💯 agree with this but in the same token there could be a top 5 complaints from customers about mechanics. You sir are truly one of a kind but in my experience plus many other reliable complaints I’m aware of, it seems that most car mechanics are either incompetent or dishonest or both when it comes to diagnosing and fixing car issues. It’s Hard to find a “good” mechanic causing a lack of trust from consumers. It goes both ways.
I used to be a mechanic. I got tired of working on flag hours. When people can't remember where the key is for the lug nuts, I just moved the car to the side, and I just didn't work on it, until they found it. I also worked on other cars while they were looking for it. My time is money, I'm not getting paid to find your stuff.
The lug nut key is a good one i use to work at a tire shop. I hated digging through peoples glove boxes, center consoles, trunks looking for there lug nut key
Lol. I thought i coined the term “ever sincer” years ago. Glad to hear others using it too. I have one to add to the list. Vehicle is dropped off for state inspection, but no current registration or insurance cards to be found. But they still have every expired one from the past ten years stuffed in the glovebox. Throw your garbage in the trash people. Oh, work vans that require the dog box to be removed for engine service, and the entire cab area is filled with parts of the trade, tools, empty coffee cups, moldy french fries, and trash, to the point that the passenger seat isn’t able to be used as a seat, and there’s some janky “custom” cup holder/junk catcher/desk thing attached to the dash with 30 drywall screws.
Welcome to working with the public. I've had cars with dirty diapers, trash, cockroaches all over and piss in the seat. Don't get paid enough for the BS you have to deal with.
As a retired fleet mechanic, I can tell you we deal with the same things. On the mess, once had a vehicle come in that I had to get under the dash and into the door panel. The whole thing was loaded with sunflower seed shells. So, I got a brush and swept them into a small box. Upon completion of the job, I dumped it all over the inside of the cab. The operator complained to the Shop Supervisor, I told him what happened. He told the driver clean up your own mess, my guys are not your maids.
Not a mechanic, but fairly mechanically inclined. 302w engine in a ford explorer for reference. Was having misfiring due to a bad injector, so after removing the upper intake manifold and replacing the injector. I was having a bit of a rage fit trying to get the manifold to stay on properly without messing up the gasket between upper/lower. Not sure what i broke but i ended up taking it to a reputable shop i like who nearly fixed it. However theres a massive vacuum leak from one of the many lines on the manifold. And the shop took it in again at no charge, and said it looks fine. Yet ForScan says otherwise, and i hear it when i shutoff the motor. Shops arent always right either. I do 90% of my own work now, and have already had my first successful transmission swap, would live to get into the field but i really dont want to work on all these new cars with warranty hours that are nowhere near enough or anything of the sort...
When most of these issues used to come up and I was flat rate , I would pull the vehicle out of my bay and give the keys to the service manager . I would tell him to reschedule it when the customer is ready . I don't get paid to look for stuff or clean your car .
You forgot the guy with the driveability concern that drops it off on empty! C'mon people. If you understood how much trouble it is to talk to the service writer and get a porter to go fuel up your vehicle so I can drive it and what a waste of my time it is, and it causes your car to get bumped in the order i work on it so it takes longer for you.
I managed a few body shops in my 20's. There are 2 instances that stick out in my memories. I always made sure to tell people to remove any valuable items in the vehicle before they leave when dropping the vehicle off. I had one woman say she had some items in her trunk she uses for her business that she was just going to leave because she didnt want to take it all out and that she understood the shop was not responsible for loss or theft of said items. I figured it was like heavy boxes of brochures or folders/paperwork. I had seen this before and i could understand why they didnt want to deal with removing heavy boxes with work BS in them. We were replacing the rear bumper cover and when the tech opened the trunk to get to some of the mounting points he immediately came and got me in the front office. When he opened up the trunk what greeted me was an assorted array of bondage and sex toys. It never ceased to amaze me what people are willing to leave in their vehicles for people they dont know to see. The second is a little more disgusting. Had a guy drop off his ford taurus to fix some front end damage. Never had to go into the trunk area for any reason during the repairs. The car was filthy inside but nothing out of the ordinary. Especially for someone who obviously works out of their vehicle. At the end of the repairs though, we would always clean and detail the vehicle. Part of this process included cleaning and vacuuming the trunk area. Well, my porter (person who cleans the vehicles) comes in my office and asks if he can skip the trunk on the taurus. I ask why and he motions me to come out to his wash bay. His english wasnt that good and it seemed it was easier for him to show me. I walk around to the back of the car and what greets me is a big pile of skid marked tighty whiteys taking up most of the trunk area. I told him to shut the trunk and park the car out front. I am scarred to t his day from seeing that. I just couldnt understand what would make someone do that.
A pet peeve for me is when the mechanic keeps my wheel lock after finishing service and I have to go back in the shop and ask them to go get it. It has happened at least 5 different times now. Another pet peeve is getting in my truck after having it serviced and seeing new greasy oil smeared on my console armrest or steering wheel or the door inside and/or out. I don't understand the disregard for the customer's vehicle.
Spot on. I was trying to think of anything i would add. The only thing i could think of is the people who are willing to get the free services but the rest of the car is falling apart and they don't care if it costs them out of pocket.
thats why i rolled all my tools up on the snap on truck when i quit working on cars at a dealership in 99 and stopped working on cars for others.. If i kept my tools they might have talked me back into it but no tools made it easy !!!
I just started working quick Lane at a Ford dealership. So far my only pet peeve is when customer wants cabin filter changed but the glove box is full of sh*t.
I spen 32 years in GM dealerships. I am ase master tech with several advanced certs and GM world class. My son and my brother are the same. I now own my own shop. Dealerships are just too toxic these days. I just wanted to add a few. The trashy vehicle is spot on. you are totally correct. Trust me i will throw the shit out in the greasy floor and walk on it. Then throw it right back in the car when done. Your forgot the customer that comes in and says" well I read on the internet". Or " once about every 6 months my car makes a noise" Being a tech has really helped me running my own shop. I know what info I need from a customer to repair their vehicle. Service writers can be a huge problem. On the other side I have worked with some great service writers too. I will also say I have had some service managers and shop formans teach me some of the best lessons I ever learned. I started in 1992 and got out in 2017. On the wheel lock thing. I spent 2 years with Lexus. They made us purchase a wheel lock key set. We never had to dig for lock keys but still pretty stupid.
I can relate to those, but your service write should be looking at those vehicles and have a pretty decent idea of what you will have to do to the vehicle and if it is dunked out to the point you have to box their crap up, they should turn it away until it is cleaned out. I use to mechanic and service write at same time. What turned customers away. The last one you had, though I do not totally agree with. If the dealer wants to except responsibility for the parts needed to fix the vehicle and then it does not fix it, then please do not charge the customer for the part that was installed and did not fix the problem. And yes it does happen and at multiple dealerships. Your awesome and a stand up guy. And just an FYI, just because that person tells you they know alot about cars doesn't mean they don't, I have had to push your generation trained mechanics out of the way to adjust a holly carburetor on an initial break in for high performance engine before they knocked the lobes down on the cam. Ad they were a pretty good mechanic, and alot of them out there don't even know how to work on turbo vehicles
Ever since you worked on it there are now oily footprints on my floor mats, door panel and steering wheel.... Customer pet peeve (from ex mechanic) I would agree 100% on your customers peeves
Totally nailed it!! Especially when the customer diagnoses the problem. Recently had a customer ask me to change an evaporator. I did. Not the leak. Then he says, “u should have leak checked it before replacing it”. And then I’m not at all happy.
I'm a tech too. If a customer comes to me with their own diagnosis and it's a big job, I'll insist on charging them diagnostic time to verify if it's really the problem.
100% absolutely 100%. Now, my girlfriend (now wife) took her car to the Toyota dealer for a recall. This is before she fully trusted me that I could work on damn near anything anywhere. I know for actual fact that the service tech pulled the drain tubes from her sunroof. Never had an issue before and the celica she had used a fastener to keep the tubes on. These guys were jerks and took advantage of her. I investigated it and found that they never repaired the car for the recall and they got in a whole heap of trouble especially when being confronted with proof. Now, the craziest thing about hoarders in cars for service is finding loaded weapons and needles…those are walkaways and sometimes include law enforcement. Fun times. When there’s a service I don’t have time for, I clean out the glovebox and console and sometimes leave a tech a small tip like a pack of gum 😂
I try and leave a note on my steering wheel with a list of things I brought it in for with $10 and say get some lunch or a couple drinks after work. I never say “this is what’s wrong” unless I’m bringing it in to have something specifically done like a PM sensor etc. If you don’t trust your mechanic don’t keep goin there. Once you find one that’s honest and knows their job, stay a customer and take care of them! They’re few and far between! Ask around town and people will tell you the good and bad shops!
I've been wrenchin on cars and trucks since waaaaay before your daddy even met your mama I'm sure lol, ( 45 years or so ) and I've dealt with every point you made countless times and It does get aggravating for sure. When one of those hoarders came in I used to just shovel all the shit out on the shop floor and have an apprentice carry it all right to the dumpster, and charge the effwit for the time.
I worked in a tire/diesel shop years back. Just as a tire monkey, no especially skilled labor. I repaired a flat tire on a local lawn care dude’s (mid-90s?) Chevy that had the plastic screw-onto-the-lug-nuts hub cover. The plastic threads in those eventually yield and the cover imperfectly attaches. Dude’s hub cover threads for this wheel were blown out on all but one of the plastic ‘lug nuts’ when it arrived and the truck left the shop exactly as it entered. With a slightly floppy loose hub cover. He came back in screaming that I had not torqued his lugs back on and they were all loose, that I was trying to get him killed, that his tire was falling off the truck, that we better give him his money back for the flat tire repair and more on top of that. As calmly as I could I told him that was the plastic hub cover fake lug nuts, not the actual lug nuts which I had applied proper torque spec to. He then kept screaming, now accusing me of blowing out all the plastic fake lug nuts threading. That I must have tried to air wrench the plastic cover on and wrecked it, that I was a real stupid piece of work, etc. I walked away and let the shop owner go deal with dudeman. Needless to say, he did not get his money back nor any coupons.
Ever since youuuu 😂😂😂😂😂. Yep, heard that one too many times. Document everything. Fuel level, indicator lights, dents, scratches, tires, etc. California is loaded with these types. Self entitlement, wants something for nothing. 😡😡
LOL Eversince I lost my anger, I have a better day. I don't get pissed and want to fight them anymore. Just laugh and grab another work order as I hand the writer a trashbag.
I always wash and completely clean my vehicles before taking them for any service. If at all possible, I'll pull the wheels locks and put the regular lug nuts back on.
During warranty i will take my vehicle to the dealership not after. Like when one shock failed a month adter driving off the lot, but if this happened beyond warranty expiration, I'd just buy new shocks.
#1 absolute worst is the customer calls you and describes what is going on with the vehicle, asked what is causing it, then when you explain a few possible causes.....they get mad that you can't diagnose specifically what is wrong by their terrible description. Or I'd say the customer who ignores what maintenance you recommend for wayyyyy too long, then gets mad at you for it failing.
ahhh yes clutter in the vehicle.... i`m a detailer for a large dealership , it just blows my mind how much junk people have in their car.... and i do the same, a large cardboard box , everything go`s in it
Good video bro. I agree with everything you said, but.....1/3 of the time not even looking at the road and seems like 1/4 of the time not even holding onto the wheel. lol
What about the diesel mechanic that tells me my 2015 Ford 6.7l has a fuel pump in the fuel tank and not on the frame rail? This shop came highly recommended
My pet hates are wait customers who keep asking how much longer and customers with children, because every precious seems to have broken arms and legs and can’t get to school or home from school, so the customer demands the car finished at a certain time to pick up their little shits. And customers who use you as a car park while they go overseas for a holiday but fail to tell you they won’t be back for a month. They finally turn up and the battery is flat and then complain they you didn’t tell then that their battery needs replacing, really!!!!!.
I have a 2014 f150 5.0 and I was getting a p0451 code and it was Evap censor. I do most of my work but didn’t wanna fool with dropping the gas tank well I took it to a local shop and they repaired it. I went to fill up the tank a day later and my fuel door broke. I knew they was the cause of that but they didn’t honor it. This is why I do most of my repairs
I agree with all except some of the rim lock nuts. The person scheduling the appointment should mention rim lock nuts if what is being done involves tires. Otherwise, great videos!! I am having my cam phasers replaced right now.
I like to have the wheel locks regardless, never know. I use them to drop large trucks down by removing front wheels to bring bay down during large or medium jobs. Short guy here.
I think you would like me as a customer. The socket for locking lug nuts is always in the cup holder and I try to give as much accurate information about the problem. I do like to hear what is wrong and a basic troubleshooting procedure
When I was a young mechanic many years ago,I put new fan belts on a BMW. The customer came back four months later screaming at me saying his muffler fell off. Of course it was my fault. I damaged his muffler. Thankfully the boss told him to take his car elsewhere for repairs in the future.
Told the servicewriter. ..5,000 mile Mustang GT..the window does not work on passengers side .Kept it 2 days bad switch said it was fixed... .was leaving the parking lot window did not work. Kept it 5 days said it was body control module window worked 1 week.Kept it 2 days said it was window motor worked 3 days. Finally kept it 7 days again said it was pig tail connector...fixed !! Then the drivers window went bad kept the car 2 weeks another pig tail installed fixed.I asked them why they did not do pin point voltage tests? They said they had to replace parts as per the Ford warranty instead to get paid !!!!They had the car ocer a month and a half total.😢
What about the people that come in with a pile of fast food bags in their vehicles with old routing food in them and you have to get in that car and pull it into the shop. Scary and you wonder if you need a hazmat suit to enter the vehicle? Been their as a tire installer for Sears back in the day
As a first year mechanic I went to check a car in and fill in the log book as I went to grab the log book out of the glove box I found a women's silicone fun stick 😅😅😅
Own and run a shop building and maintaining custom cars/trucks/motorcycles/etc. Most of these customers have 6 figures invested, so one would think they would be clean and well cared for. I have vehicles brought in that we have thousands of hours invested in the restoration and paintwork alone, only for the customer to absolutely trash and abuse. I mean it means more income for myself and my employees but it absolutely amazes me how little people appreciate the investment their vehicles can be.
@Flying Wrenches i went back and watched your review that you did before i started following you. I'm really interested in the failures and repairs i am planning on buying a used f150 in the coming years and the highbrid fuel economy is really tempting. But not if repairs are going to be more than the fuel savings. Ill keep watching your channel for more powerboost videos
Unfortunately I did this to my mechanic. However it was not my fault, as I had filled the tank only 50 miles prior to it dying. He put gas in and it ran. He failed to notice, until I told him I had filled it, that the sending unit had some rust and the tank was damaged by road debris. The in tank pump was spewing gas and he hadn't seen it. New tank and sending unit, and all good. Made the fuel gauge work as a nice bonus
Going along with what you said about disgusting cars and what people leave in them. Have you ever had to deal with customers leaving g drugs in the car or had just done drugs in the car when they drop it off. Now I don't care about people smoking weed but when they justhot boxed the car as there dropping it off real drives me crazy. I have literally had a customer tell the tow truck driver to put there pickup back on the tow truck and take it to a other shop because I was pulling another truck in to the bay and as I got out it smelled like weed real bad. Also have you ever had to deal with a customer leaving firearms in there vehicle. I don't make a big deal about it. But if I see them I do take them Unload it and put it in my gun safe in my office. And my employees are supposed to tell me if they see any and I come and handle it.its not that I don't trust my employees I just want to stop ANY kind of situation before it can happen from someone getting hurt or worse (god forbid) or something going missing. I've also had a couple verry clearly illegal firearms (I live in northern CA in the central valley so gun laws are fucking ridiculous here there guns that would be legal anywhere else most likely) and I don't make a deal about them I just do the same lol. But I always tell the customer to be more careful and to start paying attention lol

Thank you! I have most certainly seen some questionable items in customers cars over the years.
😁
I set my wheel lock out every time, either on the center console or on the dashboard and they'll still comeback and ask for the wheel lock.
There are tons of mechanics who are felons and you put their well being at risk when you leave your gun in a car. If they get pulled over and searched they are screwed. Be a responsible gun owner. Take them out.
The alignment on that truck is amazing
Lmao, I was thinking the same thing.
😀 Yeah, Flat Lander's 😂
Lol

It took me a second to realize he's got to be in the back seat. lol or he has one of those newfangled self-driving trucks
You seem like a good kid who likes to do quality work. You have a bright future keep it up.
I’m a tech in the marine industry and can totally relate, it’s really comical to listen to things the customer says is wrong vs what is actually the problem.
Boat owners are soooo stupid. It's ridiculous.
They are why I want out of the industry.
Frustrating to everyone when your not given an accurate description of the concern.
Been there done that, more than once on my F250 and now it's out of warranty and all of a sudden problem found in which that problem existed from the day I drove it off the lot new..
Agreed. Spot on.
You got it 😜I was ford truck tech for 17yrs its a huge pain in the ass all those topics 👍Brad from Ontario Canada
It goes both ways my friend! I just had to diagnose a second problem on my F150 caused by my mechanic who used aftermarket parts. I could go on, but he's been fixing my stuff for 20+ years, so no biggie...
totally agree with every point.
worst hoarder car I had involved roach infestation, live ones walking around on the rear seat in broad daylight.
i love the people that demand a tire rotation and their wheel lock is in the trunk underneath $500 worth of groceries or trunk full of suit cases you name it. if that trunk is full im not doing your rotation you can empty it and bring it back. but yes all your points are correct.
And they probably want you to hurry because they have groceries in the trunk lol 😂
That’s a good point!
Absolutely Justified video by an excellent technician. If we had more people like him, things might turn around. God Bless!
Preach it brahh
Damn! Guilty on some of these, eg self diagnosis. Didn’t even realize it. Thanks for pointing this out! I have learned and will never do it again.
that was one of my first snap on purchases was a locking lugnut master kit i bought 25 years ago.i dont even think they sell one anymore.
I’m actually rolling laughing reading this lol
I've gotten to where I now ask them if anything else is wrong and if I find something wrong when pulling it in, I call them and tell them, "Hey, you know this is broke."
People tell me to replace a part and that's all they want me to do. I tell them before hand that I didn't check it and if that's not the issue, they still have to pay to fix the right problem.
I get told all the time, "Hey, since youtube shows it only takes 5 min to do it, shouldn't cost much right?" I reply "Guess you can do it yourself if it's that easy." They normally reply, "I don't want to do it, that's why I brought it to you." I tell them, "I don't work for free just like you don't."
"It's been doing the same thing ever since I picked it up from you, two yrs ago." "So your not going to charge me to fix it, right?"
"The noise is coming from the left rear." Actually coming from front right.
"Hey, my a/c isn't cold now and you just worked on it." "Yeah, I changed your brake pads and didn't touch your a/c."
I've literally had people tell me their a/c was ice cold, I lift the hood and there isn't even a compressor on it, then they ask me what did I do with it.
---One of the biggest things is. "While you're in there."---
It turns a 1hr quote into a 5hr job, then they ask why it's so high when I quoted 1hr.
I have never experienced a dealership saying they miss diagnosed. They just say.... you also needed this part after we got in there and add on
💯 agree with this but in the same token there could be a top 5 complaints from customers about mechanics.
I never heard of such a thing till now 👀
LOL Mayson 😉. Speaking as a long ‘indentured’ 😊 mechanic myself, I understand those pet peeves very well. We all have them.
100% the truth. Those are my top pet peeves. I hate digging through someone's car looking for the lug nut key.
Especially through the old sticky spilled coke in the middle console
@@FlyingWrenches13 🤢🤢🤢🤢
I will definitely follow your advice! Appreciate your videos!
As a retired tech,I can relate!
The people who want an airbag recall performed on a vehicle that I’m not even sure how it made it to the dealer lol
thats why i rolled all my tools up on the snap on truck when i quit working on cars at a dealership in 99 and stopped working on cars for others.. If i kept my tools they might have talked me back into it but no tools made it easy !!!
I’ve seen all of the pet peeve customers, spot on!
I really enjoy your videos. I’ve learned a lot and I’m not even a ford guy 👍
Agree 100% no fuel for long test drive applications is my favorite.....
i feel your pain. but my car is pretty bad too its like a rolling tool box and the top drawer like Friday at 5 0clock lol
I just started working quick Lane at a Ford dealership. So far my only pet peeve is when customer wants cabin filter changed but the glove box is full of sh*t.
And how many people know it's behind the glove box?
@@jefffrank9735 most ppl won't
Exactly! Could’ve saved some money if they would have just paid for a diagnosis.
Loved this video! I swear all this has happened to myself after 25 years as an auto mechanic and more. Lol. Enjoyed the video a lot.
Thank you!
Customers that walk into the shop to watch when the doors are open in the summertime or the customers that want to know more then what it is
I've been wrenchin on cars and trucks since waaaaay before your daddy even met your mama I'm sure lol, ( 45 years or so ) and I've dealt with every point you made countless times and It does get aggravating for sure.
I always get the can’t you just hook it up to the scanner and see what is wrong with it only takes 5 minutes or it’s only 3 bolts to get it done.
Spot on !!!
I'm right there with ya man, every last thing you said!
in my 50 years as a mechanic the worst thing i have dealt with was a used tampon under the driver front seat.
During warranty i will take my vehicle to the dealership not after. Like when one shock failed a month adter driving off the lot, but if this happened beyond warranty expiration, I'd just buy new shocks.
I agree with you brother
#1 absolute worst is the customer calls you and describes what is going on with the vehicle, asked what is causing it, then when you explain a few possible causes.....they get mad that you can't diagnose specifically what is wrong by their terrible description. Or I'd say the customer who ignores what maintenance you recommend for wayyyyy too long, then gets mad at you for it failing.
All True!! I can relate! Dont forget about the RUclips Certify Mechanic's! People need to have respect!
Haha RUclips certs are the best sometimes!
@@FlyingWrenches13😁 yes I agree, I am referring to the once that is not Certified!

Good stuff brother, keep these comin!
ahhh yes clutter in the vehicle.... i`m a detailer for a large dealership , it just blows my mind how much junk people have in their car.... and i do the same, a large cardboard box , everything go`s in it
Good video bro. I agree with everything you said, but.....1/3 of the time not even looking at the road and seems like 1/4 of the time not even holding onto the wheel. lol
Gotta multitask lol
keep the vids coming! Really enjoy this channel. How about some ForScan mods?
I’ll see if I can come up with something! Thank you!
What about the diesel mechanic that tells me my 2015 Ford 6.7l has a fuel pump in the fuel tank and not on the frame rail? This shop came highly recommended
death of the half ton truck is different for each manufacturer but I just go by when they stopped offering a manual transmission
“My buddy can get the parts at cost so just swing by there and grab what ya need and I’ll pay for it all.”🤦♂️
Awsome content , i enjoy the way you bresk it down , funny
I have a 2014 f150 5.0 and I was getting a p0451 code and it was Evap censor. I do most of my work but didn’t wanna fool with dropping the gas tank well I took it to a local shop and they repaired it. I went to fill up the tank a day later and my fuel door broke. I knew they was the cause of that but they didn’t honor it. This is why I do most of my repairs
A++ Summary.
Good common sense video, good job Mayson!
I think you would like me as a customer. The socket for locking lug nuts is always in the cup holder and I try to give as much accurate information about the problem. I do like to hear what is wrong and a basic troubleshooting procedure
If it's trashed, BAD. You gotta wonder what condition their "Service port" is in...
When I was a young mechanic many years ago,I put new fan belts on a BMW. The customer came back four months later screaming at me saying his muffler fell off. Of course it was my fault. I damaged his muffler. Thankfully the boss told him to take his car elsewhere for repairs in the future.
Also super duty front ends I feel like I could do them in my sleep LoL
Can you do a video on f150 epas and steering racks
Been their as a tire installer for Sears back in the day
Doesn’t harbor freight sell a cheap set of wheel lug lock keys? I think wheel thieves have the sets.
As a first year mechanic I went to check a car in and fill in the log book as I went to grab the log book out of the glove box I found a women's silicone fun stick 😅😅😅
I can only imagine, Mayson. .
I had a customer ask if I stole the ashtray as it what the hell am I gonna do with an ashtray
The lock key drives me nuuuuuts.
All good points, when you get a hybrid power bost f150 in, can you do a video on it
What would you like to see on it? I made a review video a while back.
How about when the customer complains about an engine run problem but the gas tank is empty so you can't drive it.
100 % especially the wheel lock 😒
