    I think it is already established that the Bosch CP4 high-pressure pump is not suitable for North American diesel fuels, and Bosch engineers have confirmed this. It was the wrong choice. Note that the CP3, fed the very same fuel, has had no issues. It's unfair to blame owners, many of whom have worked very, very hard to avoid catastrophic failures. Unfortunately, although diligent maintenance may help, nothing can guarantee you won't be stranded in the middle of nowhere when the pump finally disintegrates. These pumps are a disaster.

      I agree 100%. But there is hope. S and s diesel has made a kit with the DCR pump that will not fail. Really!! It’s the cure we all have been waiting for. Unfortunately, the dealer will not sell it or install it cause then it’s fixed and they don’t keep making money! “)

      You are spot on, diesellady. A friend spent just over $11,000 to get his truck back on the road after his Bosch CP4 injection pump disintegrated. What did the dealer do? Installed another CP4!!! It's only a matter of time before my friend is stranded in the middle of nowhere, AGAIN!

      No chance that perfect maintenance will ensure this doesn’t happen. It only takes one bad tank of diesel to overwhelm the filter system.
      I think the biggest issue is that Fords Engineers don’t care about making engines easy to work on. Their goal is set by management who says “give us this amount of capability for as low a price as possible for X= reliability. Fords maintenance shop are massive profit centers for dealerships.
      Sadly, until engineers are forced to work on these motors out of their own time and money….. until manufacturers care about making things easy to work on, then only the rich or businesses OR people with massive levels of debt will own these trucks.
      Think about this, $110,000 dollars for a truck with tax title and license. Payment of $2200 a month for 80 months. Half way through the 80 months, engine fails. Ford will almost always blame the owner when in fact it was an engineer issue.
      I am in the 2% of wag owners in the US, my wife and I make $350,000 a year. After taxes, insurance, house payment, food, kids we literally have just enough left over for funding our 401K.

      @@bret9741 so if I’m not mistaken, as I don’t own one, I believe the 6.7 ford does not have a water in fuel light either. Which means you will never know that you have water in your fuel till it kills the CP4 pump and/or injectors. But they can see the WIF count on the scanner. Just insane, right??? 😢

      @@bret9741you forgot to mention that the dodge also has the same problem. At work we had 5 different trucks go down in the same week. 3 on the same day. All 5 trucks got fuel from the same location, dodge claimed 3 had contaminated fuel and denied warranty claim. So imagine spending nearly $300k on trucks, then spending almost $30k 17 months later to fix them. Kind of bullshit, isn’t it???

    Love how you described everything man! I learned a lot about these 6.7s from you. I recently started working on powerstrokes at new shop I work at as well as duramax. Came from Chrysler/dodge/jeep/ram, so I learned a lot about Cummins as well.
    I’m fairly new to diesel work and I love working on these things. Keep up the videos man! Knowledge is power.

      Thanks man. I use to work for Chrysler too. I hated every last one of them lol I’ve recently gotten into the Duramax engines as well. Lots of money to be made from head gaskets/injectors on the early 6.6’s.

    I had a fuel system failure and they told me $11,00 for a new system so I left the service department and went to the parts dept and purchased a new engine for $15,500 and installed it myself....flushed everything and have a brand new engine for just a few thousand more

    I appreciate all the knowledge you shared in this video. I only wish the people at Barber Ford had even a fraction of your knowledge. I took my truck in recently. It was misdiagnosed twice for a total of $3500 (fuel rail etc.). On their third try, they figured it out. Over five weeks later, I finally got my truck back. I laughed when you mentioned in the video a dealership should eat the cost of misdiagnosed repairs. My dealership did not feel the same way so I had to explain why I should not have to pay $3500 PLUS another $11,000. Thanks for making videos like this. Not only are you helping to educate end users, I am sure a lot of mechanics find it useful too.

    Enjoy your videos! As an owner of an Independent repair facility. I will say many repair shops are well qualified to program Injector codes as well as most other repairs. We are a Ford PSN shop and perform proper repairs. We use ford IDS to perform module Reflashing as well as as built data. There are many repair shops with qualified technicians out there. That being said there are many shops that do not perform proper repairs as you say. Again thanks for your information.

    Love your video, just bought the SNS DPK, but ve had this truck since 60 k miles and I’m pushing 200 now. Herd a lot about the kits and your the first one to not stand behind them. I wounded if there is anyone on yt who has utilized the kit and just replaced the pump and had no problems. If my shit fucks up in the future I got your video saved and ima bring it to you 😂

    I agree about the prevention kit, contaminants still get every where. It just filters about half of the return line volume from my understanding.

    Great video dude. I stress the same thing to my buddies. Maintenance, maintenance, maintenance. I change my fuel filters every 15K or sooner depending on where I get my fuel. I also add lubricity to my fuel since ULSD is very dry. You are very thorough and seem like a great mechanic. Keep it up bud 👍🏼

    Awesome vid! Having had the cabs off of a few 6.0/6.4's in the past ,I change my personal 6.7 oil and fuel filters every 5k. Overkill? yes.... but i look at it as cheap insurance.

    Excellent video. I still own the first truck I ever bought, which was a 1987 F250 6.9 diesel. It has more than a half a million miles on it now. I also still own a 1990 7.3 that I bought brand new. 300K miles on that one. I have a 1997 7.3 PSD with 200K, and a 2016 PSD F450 with 125K. I've got several others as well, but you get the idea. All of these motors have never had any major failures or system failures. All of them pull trailers at their maximum capacity on a weekly basis. The two things I think that contribute to this success are: A) I don't hammer on them, or ever let them get hot. And B) I change ALL of my filters every 5,000 miles. The fuel filter kits on the newer trucks are about $100. I can buy a whole bunch of fuel filter kits for the price of a new high-pressure fuel system. All of these trucks are paid off and all of them earn me money every week. (Not the 87; she's partially retired and just pulls my horse trailer now.) Filters are CHEAP! And they provide a double savings. The first savings is in the lack of a new fuel system cost. The other savings that people can overlook is the lack of down time. Just subscribed to your channel.       I have a 97 7.3 and pull about 15-18k with it it has bigger injectors and turbo and pulls it really well I can only imagine how well these 6.7 trucks pull

    very well spoken dude!!! you're making me keep my 2000 7.3 its a dinosaur but amazing. in May of this year the pickup screen failed on me and the 2 filters were completely clogged in the tank. I fix Asian cars professionally. I Live in Austin, drove to Rogers Arkansas to get my parents 1930 Model A on my 16 foot trailer. everything was fine on the trip up until 1.5 miles from my parents house at 595 miles 1 way. I thought my cam position sensor was failing. replaced it even though it had the recall 11 years ago. I filled it up for the trip to Austin. 4.5 hours into the trip it started misfiring, going 35 mph in the middle of Oklahoma on the side of the road with a restored Model A on the trailer.Ran like shit. I shut it off as I was scared on the side of the road. 10 minutes later I started it again and it got me 25 more miles to civilization and diesel and food.filled it up, had lunch, went south through Dallas until Belton and it started failing again, 20 minutes on the side of the road, 45 more minutes to Round rock, side of the road, 20 minutes, 12 more miles on the side of the road, 20 minutes, 11 miles on the side of the road 4 miles from the house, made it in 13 hours. it was the pickup screen in the tank and the 2 small filters in the fuel module getting clogged with the plastic stuff from the disintegrated pickup screen. pull bed, replaced both filters and pickup screen and its brand new truck again! I hugged my big old lady for getting us home!! I'll keep "Big Dirty" forever! 270,000 miles on it now.

      Ford is having issues getting the screen and 2 filters in tank for the 7.3.
      I got mine on line. $15.00 your generation might be different as I really dont work on these professionally. might ask your parts department and get them done before the pickup screen disintegrates!

    Ok so i found this video today because one of my F-550 service trucks the fuel pump went out in it today. It’s a 2019 F-550 and I love this truck I am praying the engine is ok. I’m a big ford fan and I thought this engine was going to be very reliable and now after watching this I am worried.

    My 2015 went in to reduced engine power. Pulled over and fuel was running down the passenger side engine area down the frame. Hauled to a reputable shop that told me more than likely it's the cp4 pump. How common is it for fuel to leak from cp4 failure? Engine was not locked up and the filters have been changed regularly.

      Thank you! The only time I’ve ever seen them leak is when it blows the return lines off the injectors. Usually this is caused by fuel contamination. I’ve also never seen a fuel system failure that was still running. Usually when they go, they go bad.

      @@trentcoyle9393 mine had the fuel pressure switch leaking. Part number BC3Z-9S599-C. I for sure thought it was the cp4. Currently running and ordered the disaster kit to be safe

    I change my fuel filters in my 2019 Ford f350 powerstroke every 10,000 miles and my oil every 7500 miles religiously. I haul with the truck and currently have 220,000 miles. But keep running into people who tell me I WILL have a fuel system failure. Not if but when! I was glad to hear a positive outcome from you. They all told me to install a disaster kit.

      Same here, 2018 F250, change fuel filter every other oil change and just now at 188.000 miles I am getting a message P0087 code came (Fuel Rail/System Pressure too low) Sent the info to a buddy of mine with lots of experience on diesel trucks who explained to me that on my code data the Commanded fuel rail pressure A was 54072.57 inHg and the actual Fuel rail pressure A was 46341.59 inHg giving the message of low pressure. I am now waiting for a local mechanic to take my truck in for inspection but its going to take a couple of weeks until he is open, I decided not to drive it until I can be sure of the HPFP is bad and hoping there is no other issue with the rest of the system. Maintenance is my priority, but I am not sure yet on the S&S CP4 upgrade or keeping the original ford pump, getting mixed reviews is driving me insane. My mechanic also advised me on the upgrade to S&S… I am plan in keep this truck for life so any advise would be helpful at the moment. Great video by the way even for a regular diesel owner like me.

    You have great videos! I have well maintained 2011 6.7 with 150k plus miles. Heard horror stories about the Bosh Cp4 pump. I took the plunge and replaced the Cp4 pump with S&S Fuel's new DCR HP pump. Put about 3K miles on the truck with the new pump without any issues.

      The disaster kit to me is a band-aid. I now the pump is 2k but if your CP4 dies you still have to replace the pump . Makes sense to me just instal the S&S pump.

    you are amazing. but one correction oil floats to the top of gas so if you put gas in diesel, it will be on the bottom after setting for a few hours.

    2020 F350 6.7 , I did a complete fuel system replacement and replaced all injectors with OEM , now have low fuel pressure code and reduced engine power message ! Long story short after all the test it came out to be #6 injector was dribbling fuel once rail pressure increased which caused the issues, so I replaced the injector with another new one, problem resolved. Just letting everyone know even new parts are not always perfect

    Good video, commentary and explanation as well as a confident opinion. I recently purchased a 2012 duramax and have been hearing all the CP4 horror stories. I have an extensive background in heavy equipment repair. Not light duty diesels. Any time I see anyone jacking with their rigs putting all these heavy mods on them I cringe. Their are many good mechanics out there who understand these systems but the yayhoos throwing all of the speculation mods on their rigs are asking for trouble. I just never understand how someone doesn't get the correlation of proper maintenance equaling longevity and a more trouble free experience. Okay, off my soapbox. Anyway, keep up the good work!

    I think it’s up to $12k now. Fuel additives, fuel filters every 10k-12k miles, get diesel from high flow stations. I use HSS EDT AND their LX4 lubricity additive as well. Do those and you’ll have the best chance of your pump lasting the life of the truck. Fuel filter kits are only like $80 for upper and lower, for my 2015 anyways, and you can do it yourself.
    Imo save your money on the disaster prevention kit and use additives; good fuel, and maintenance maintenance maintenance!!!

    Thanks for the video; always nice to get different perspectives from Ford mechanics on this issue. I added the disaster prevention kit and exergy VCV, along with running a fuel lubricant additive and changing my filters every 15k. I get what you're saying about the kits; hopefully I'll never have to find out if they work!

    Good video. Pretty sure you mixed up the fuel pressure control valve and the fuel volume control valve. The former is on the HPFP and the latter is on the rear of the driver's side fuel rail.

    Excellent explanation 👍🏿but that is a horrible fuel filter design, my question is what is wrong with spin on fuel filter canisters like the older trucks have which I think filters better. You mentioned filter change intervals I changed my filters at 50k miles but of course I have an aftermarket FASS lift pump on my gmc truck with a 2 micron Donaldson filter and a 1 micron Donaldson filter on the engine I got rid of that problematic OEM GM filter head junk and replaced it with a niktane filter head anyway with my long intervals I have not had any fuel system issues so far with a 16 year old truck at 301k miles with original cp3 pump and injectors. Hey man that fly is giving you hell😂🤦🏿‍♂️

    The CP4 seems to be the one reason I couldn’t go with a power stroke. GM went to denso for 2017 and up. Ram went back to CP3 after 2 years of cp4. Somehow it’s supposed to work better in a Ford than the other 2? It seems to be finicky at best, shouldn’t have to run additives every tank either. I know better than to put gas or Def into the fuel tank, can I be absolutely certain over the quality of diesel fuel every time I fill up? I love the look of the 2020+ superduties and would love the power no doubt. Just don’t want to worry about having a catastrophic fuel system failure.

      I can understand those concerns. Honestly though, the cp4 pump works great as long as your keeping clean fuel running through it. Most of the trucks I see that need fuel systems are usually because of no maintenance or they pump some rusty water from a off road diesel tank in a field somewhere into it. I can’t convince these farmers to quit running the same fuel they pour in their tractors.

    Just ran across your excellent video, have a 2016 F250 Lariat 6.7 D and have been pretty worried about this issue. Has ~65,000 miles on it and runs great so far. Am replacing fuel filters every other oil change, which are on a 5K mile schedule, all parts genuine FOMOCO OEM and work done by a local shop with great reputation. Even after hearing the info near end of vid about staying on a program like that, is it worth replacing the HPFP before it reaches 100K? The shop I use says its been found the lobes in the original pump are just a tad too long and contribute to the fail rate especially on engines that see high RPM and load on a regular basis. All responses viewed with great interest, thanks in advance.

    So with a disaster prevention kit, you should be able to just change pump,filters and be good right? I think my pump is going out but I have the DPK on it

    I replace my fuel filters on my 16 F250 6.7 at every oil change. I have been told that’s over kill but hey even if so would much rather spend $70 extra for the fuel filters and the maybe 15 min at most to replace em vs the $10k to replace the whole fuel system and spend days doing the job!

    Great video man, I'm looking at buying a 2012 6.7. What's the best way to tell if the fuel system has been taken care of? I dont think the dealer would appreciate me tearing the intake off in the parking lot so is there a easier way to get some peace of mind before buying? Thanks

    The s&s kit sends the bottom end fuel from the pump (under low pressure) directly through a 6 micron spin on filter on the return side. The top end of the pump only gets fuel from the top of engine OEM filter. Has to be better than nothing imo. At a min, it should save replacing the rails/injectors, maybe.

    From a 30 year Ford diesel tech. Good Job on the video. I will say this to customers that are maintaining their trucks correctly that actually get bad fuel, wrong fuel, or put DEF fluid in their fuel tank and end up needing a fuel system. If you have full cover insurance it will pay for it. I probably average 10 insurance fuel system claims a year at my dealer.

      I have a 2019 F250 diesel, I had a failure with my truck. Initially I though it was an fuel system failure, but I noticed a large amount of fuel in the valley of the engine. This fuel comes out soon as the key is turned, is this common? And what May be the cause? The fuel filters were also changed approximately 400 before the event.

    Actually ulsd is quite dry. The loading rack will add a lube additive to bring it to minimum lubricity requirements. You're also right on it being dirty, it goes through another catalyst after it's made to strip the Sulpher from it.

      392,000 miles on my 2012 6.7 and Ive never added anything to my fuel. My brother works for Bosch (in Germany) and he calls diesels fuel additive snake oil.

      Government sulfur requirements put in refineries kill diesel fuels ability to lubricant. 15ppm now and will go lower. Our unit is literally called diesel desulfurization unit lol. So stupid

    Hi, just replaced the entire newfuel system plus the lift pump and new filters. Tank removed and cleaned, all lines cleaned too.The truck runs great but takes a bit longer to start. Cranks about 3-4sec before fires up . Also, when key on the lift pump makes kind of gurgle noise . Still air in system? Thanks!

    Great video sir, VERY INFORMATIVE. Thank for the video. Could you recommend a additive that you may know of that would aid in lubrication in our diesel fuel? I bought new back in 2011 a 6.7l powerstroke f250 4X4 and I retired the truck back in 2019 with 113,000 miles on it and I keep up with it as far as oil changes and fuel filters and I keep it with a full tank of diesel. What additive would be good for something like my situation? One more thing, my truck is the plain Jane XL, would my dash tell me if there's water in my filters? Thumbs up on your video bud. 👍

    I see way too many of these 6.7s at our Ford dealership with the problems you just described. Diesels are very popular in our area with the young Country/Amish kids. They definitely are very knowledgeable about tuners and suspension upgrades, but are clueless with maintenance. The 6.7 in it's current generation is a very stout motor, but is unforgiving without timely maintenance. These kids damn near break down when we tell them that it's going to cost $8-9K to fix their mess and their warranty is voided because of all the tuner crap they put on it. All of the older, more experienced diesel owners that religiously service their bone stock engines, 150-200K with minimal issues.

      Couldn’t agree more. It really sucks that the 6.7’s kinda get a bad wrap because of the fuel systems when the real issue is people that don’t do maintenance.

    I get everyone has there own opinion on everything but I'm a firm believer in a disaster kit from s&s bc after getting bad fuel from a local gas station(also I change my fuel filters with my oil every 5k miles) I had my cp4 go out with a kit on and all I did was roll a new pump in and all was well and that's been 8k miles ago.

    I have A 2015 f350 6.7 and just went through all my dealer service records ( have our vehicles serviced religiously ) and found the only fuel filter change was at 44k. Is that too long for a filter. Love your Videos.

    Love the vid man! Am I going mondo beyondo in replacing my filters every 15K? Also, how often would you recommend draining the water separator? I try to get my diesel from clean/ well maintained fuel stations (Truck stops, Walmart, grocery stores) that appear to have a good fuel turn over.

      Thank you! 15K may be a little overboard. I would start seeing what they look like when you change them, if they are still clean and look brand new then maybe try to stretch it out to every 20-25K. I would check the water separator at least every oil change.

    First time I changed my fuel filters on a used f450 turbo super duty I purchased I apparently didn't tighten the under the truck filter housing tight enough as it was sucking air. I still managed to get it started before I figure out the issue. Within the 30-40 minutes of me driving the low fuel pressure warning indicator came on. While go back home truck killed. I managed to tighten the filter where its not taking in more air, but now the truck just spins. Have an idea what it could be?
    Not to mention that same morning I filled my the fuel tank full.

      Sounds like you still have air in the system. I would cycle the key to on position and let pump for the 30 seconds until it times out. Repeat this about 4 or 5 times and you should have all of the air out of it.

    hey sir! good videos! i am not an expert in powerstroke diesel truck work but i fix, i now have a 2017 ford f350 6.7, the high pressure pump broke, it cracked, i installed a new one, i installed a new fuel pump, the filters, i inspected everything and the system is not contaminated, the truck does not want to start, it only gives me the p2291 code, would you recommend any procedure?

    have issues with 2017 that will not make pressure to fire up only goes to about 1,300 psi
    but will start with starter fluid but after that truck will run good. till you let it sit for about 3 hrs then it will not make [ressure again
    we did the pump because it had black stuff built up on the sensor. would I need the complete system too?

    We bought 4 2020 6.7 super duty’s all 4 have extended 150,000 mile factory warranties all 4 have regular maintenance done by ford dealership’s at the recommended intervals all 4 get fuel from the same truck stops, and all 4 use fuel additives regularly and we have had no fuel contamination issues, and yet 3 of the 4 have eaten their fuel pumps and wiped out the entire fuel system thank goodness all 3 were cover under warranty the last one has never had a single issue but it is nearing its warranty expiration mileage and is about to get its disaster prevention kit installed before it has an issue,

    I've had 3 6.0's over the years. All treated me good. I've contemplated going to the 6.7, but the CP4 scares the hell out of me way worse than any 6.0 problem.

    S&S has there stage 2 kit out and they have a video of them purposely killing the HPFP fairy glitter to the max. New fuel pump installed and the truck is still running today OG injectors.

    where i worked they said change all the filters every service. hydraulic oil was the only fluid and atifreeze that got changed seasonal we even drained a few gallons of diesel out of the bottom of the fuel tanks.

    Me personally I change them on my 2013 f250 every 5000 and I checked the cp4 sensor at 80k looks brand new no signs of metal.

    Just found this channel, awsome video. I'm so overkill meaning I change my oil and filters anywhere from 3500-4500 miles as well as the fuel filters but oh well that's just me. How often do you recommend draining the fuel for checking for water and what do you recommend any fuel or oil additives. Thank you.

      Thank you! I would check for water every time I serviced the truck. Just to see what has built up in that last 5k or so miles. As far as additives go, check out Powerstroke tech talks channel. I believe he has a video comparing all the different additives that would probably help you more than what I can put in this comment thread.

    Mason I got a ‘15 that I just put a new fuel system on dropped the tank and cleaned it as well. Now the truck is showing low pressure on the high side yet cranks on starting fluid. You think it’s the rail sensor?

    Ok, my truck just broke down. Low power mode 1st then stall. Had it towed into the dealer after waiting in 10* weather for 3 hours. I finally get a call that they have found metal in my fuel system. They did not tell me that they have seen this on their trucks before. (Mine is a 2021 F350 SD, 33,000 miles) I’m afraid they are going to try to tell me I did something wrong in the first place. The only thing that happened was my last service approx 1,400 miles back my dealer filled my DEF fluid, which I never told them to do because I didn’t want a DEF mistake to occur. I always, always fill with blue DEF in a box so a mistake cannot occur, but I don’t know if that was the issue or not. I paid sooo much for this truck and no one told me about this problem they were having - now this has happened. I can not be without my truck and now I am totally stuck. Any advice? Should get the sad news today about what they have found.

    Hi guys I have an injector question. 2020 6.7 ps, I’m using fords forescan to watch cylinder fuel balancing and the units are displayed in mg. They range from around +.375mg to -.62mg at idle. During a cell +.3-4 to -1.2 and that -1.2 being only 1 cylinder. I’ve got 3 showing to be pulling a bit more fuel than the others. The rest of the cylinders seem to stay much closer together. I also put a little extra Amsoil in and the cylinders came even closer together. Running Liqui moly purge through it now to see how she fares. I don’t know large of a difference that is for this system/motor/application. I’ve been chasing a dpf issue that spurred from a p2002 code and consistent 10% fuel in oil on oil test. This is why we test folks. Oil grows fast now, as in I can notate a difference in a 50 mile trip. SCR seems to stay running at idle when closed and open loop filter numbers range 0 to when it regens. Yesterday I smelled raw fuel and I’ve had a light grayish white smoke on startup I noticed. Today did a snap test at end of trip and got a little black poof. It seems to be leaking just enough to not set a directly related DTC.
    It could have been doing this longer just didn’t notice as I’ve cared for this truck religiously and didn’t forsee issues at 50k haha. No coolant issues. I believe it to be fuel injectors or a cracked dpf at this point. I’ve done manual regens, used Liqui moly flush, all worked well and numbers look fine on forescan as far as dpf related ones. As long as I keep my oil from growing my distance between regens is 500-600 miles and honestly I think it would be higher without the underlying issue. Concerns I have are that I did fuel filter changes outdoors and while I didn’t think it was an issue, I’ve come to learn the tolerances are at a 1 micron in these injectors meaning the average guys setup has no room for error and needs to be extremely clean. Any thoughts on how I can diagnose with just forescan?

    I had my FORD Dealer replace my 2014 F350 CP4 with the newer CP4.2 I also had them install the SPE Disaster Prevention Kit. I change my Oil every 5000 miles without fail (Shell Rotella T 4or5). I change bothe fuel filters every 3 oil changes without fail. I had the CP4 replaced just as a precaution (before the S&S came out). I thought about and was advised by an after market dealer to put a FASS system in but then was told by another it wasn’t worth it. Not sure on that one yet. My buddy who SES driven all types of diesels and pulled loads all over the country recommended change oil every 5000 no matter what and use Rotella T. I’ve know how good Rotella T is for years had another buddy who ran it in ALL his motorcycles and said it NEVER failed him. So there ya go. I agree MAINTENANCE IS PARAMOUNT!!!

    Subscribed. This video helps support is why I keep hesitating on a new truck. We have a rock solid 2004.5 6.0… no def and just keeps rocking on.
