    Just some future trailer safety, don't stand between the truck and trailer while backing up and definitely don't stand over or on the tongue while shifting a load. Be very bad for something mechanical to fail on video

    Some one probably already commented this but you can slide the adapter in first and line your pin up with the holes but don’t push the pin all the way in, just enough to hold the adapter in place while you feed in the hitch

    Nice video. I love that tongue weight scale. WARNING though : Better be careful when pulling into or out of a steep driveway to a flat road. That long additional drop post will drag and scratch up someone's driveway.

    Living the dream! When your son Michael had his head over the hitch watching the scale change as the Razor moved to the back, my heart just sank. Never do that again please, there was no weight on the ball and there was likely upward pressure just held in place with the ball safety clamp. Had the hitch popped off it could have been a disaster for your boy. BTW, there is one Amazon review at the time of this posting for the WS6-3 giving it 1 star saying the gauge failed and seller doesn't seem to be making it right. Pretty sad for a $340 hitch. Hope yours is holding up well.

      @@matthewjames2235 Long term update from me is it's still working great. No issues. I do remove it from the truck when not in use though. I will also take out the ball occasionally and clean out the grime. That's probably the biggest risk is getting junk in where the shaft pushes on the hydraulic scale.

    Micheal's back. He is starting to get famous from your videos, all the girls will be chasing after him soon. That is quite the hitch you found, I can say I have ever seen anything like that with the little scale built into it. I love the fact that you can see the weight on the hitch, that is extremely handy and useful in my opinion especially if your ever stopped by Highway Safety or the Police and they want to question you about your load etc. I can see where that would answer a lot of questions they might have.
    Another great video Mr T good to see your putting the SD thru it's paces with the kids along to help.

Most F-250 owners purchased that type of truck because it either looks cool or they want to show off. 95% of super duty buyers never use its full capability and a half ton would suffice. Especially that they can now tow over 13k lbs and get almost double the fuel economy.

    If you just teach him to just put the adapter in then put the pin just in to the adapter side then slide the receiver in it would take seconds but you would have to be smarter than the ball yourself and yes the chains need to be crossed and you have the hooks upside-down

    i pulled my 13k trl with a rental 16 f250 and had balance issues so i had to reposition my tractor. with my own trk i can see the trk sitting and judge my tongue load. no scale needed. 3 inch reciever holy crap

    • @EpicCowlick
      @EpicCowlick  7 лет назад

      Yeah, that's the thing. Without a scale you just kind of look at the truck and guess. If if sways, load farther forward next time. With the capacities of these trucks nowadays you almost don't have to worry about a load being to heavy. It is interesting to see actual numbers now though.

      You made my point! It takes instructions to deal with two adapters in a single hitch! lol. Just kidding, another method is to put both adapters in and then insert the pin just enough to hold them but not interfere with the hitch. Slide it in and push pin when lined up. 1) Isthere any rattle between the ball platform & the shank while towing? 2) How are the pins, that secure the ball platform to the shank, mounted to the locking mechanism? Thanks for the vid... it got me wanting to spend more money.

    • @EpicCowlick
      @EpicCowlick  7 лет назад +1

      When I'm towing I can't hear the hitch by itself. I hear the trailer and everything it's hooked to. There is some clunking but there is always clunking when towing. Weigh Safe uses a two-pin design which I think is superior to the single pin on other adjustables. It's very strong.

    • @Trigger_32

      Yeah, this was played up a little for dramatic effect. This 2017 F350 had two adapters to get it down from the 3 inch receiver. One to make it 2.5 inches and another to make it 2 inches. It was just a lot of extra parts and rattling that wasn't necessary.

  • @jshuda7558
    @jshuda7558 7 лет назад

    Great video! Comparing the Weigh Safe to the Rapid Hitch, would you say the Weigh Safe is still a much better product? Besides the obvious advantage of the scale, does the Weigh Safe have less rattle than the Rapid Hitch? Thanks!

    • @EpicCowlick
      @EpicCowlick  7 лет назад +1

      Yeah, what can you say about the Rapid Hitch? It's a hitch, it works great, it does what it's supposed to. The weigh safe does all that but with style! And of course the scale is just amazing. I can't really speak to rattle because I don't drive around with the hitch in the receiver. Only time it's in is when a trailer is attached. I understand Weigh-Safe just made their shanks longer to go further into the receiver just to make less noise so that's good.

      You might not need an F-250. An F-150 can tow up to 13k lbs and they now have a diesel that can tow over 11k lbs and gets 25mpg highway. The F-250 is cool looking but you will be burning more fuel and it is a bigger truck overall. Most F-250 owners never use its full tow capacity purpose and a half ton could do 95% of jobs.

    I noticed that is a 3" hitch receiver on a 160" wheel base, how did you get them to install that when a 2.5" seems to be the standard on 160". I have one on order and my dealer said I am getting a 2.5" installed

    • @EpicCowlick
      @EpicCowlick  7 лет назад

      Your dealer is right. My truck is a job 1 built in October 2016 and Ford changed the receiver sizes on Job 2. The 3 inch receivers are now only available on long bed 350 and HD 250's. The duallys get the 3 inch receiver also. It doesn't make perfect sense but it's generally agreed that the 3 inch receiver is overkill. The 2.5 will give all the capacity the truck is actually rated for.

    Do you know what size hooks you have on your trailer safety chains. The new Ford hitch design has got a lot of people perplexed on how to hook up safety chains. Apparently there are a lot of hooks without the depth to fit through the hole and still latch.

    • @EpicCowlick
      @EpicCowlick  7 лет назад

      They are marked G70 5/16 on the hooks. The problem with some of the hooks is not that the hook is not large enough, it's that the safety latch is too long. I just watched a video on the Fast Lane Truck on a F250 going over the Ike Gauntlet where the guy showed the problem. The hooks on that trailer fit fine but the safety clasp would not close. There's a simple and easy fix and that is to simply shorten the safety clasp. Some folks use a dremel or a hacksaw to cut off a quarter inch of length. Then the hook fits over and the clasp closes fine. My video shows how the hooks work with shorter clasps and there's no issue. There clearly are variables out there in the trailer hook making industry.

    • @tbwill
      @tbwill 7 лет назад

      Thanks, I saw that fix on the Ford-Trucks forum. Guess I'll have to pull out the sawzall and shorten the latches, but first I need long enough chains. Moving the hook up point back the two or three inches they did from the previous Super Duty means my chains are just a bit short.

    • @EpicCowlick
      @EpicCowlick  7 лет назад +1

      A quick rule of thumb is to take whatever you were using before and add two inches of drop. My trailers worked fine with a 6 inch drop hitch on my 2011 but I need a 8 inch drop to keep the trailers level with the 2017. Ball height on the Weigh Safe with a 8 inch drop and OEM wheels & tires will be 18 inches off the ground. On my truck it is 19 inches off the ground due to the larger tires. Go measure the top off the tongue on your lowest trailer and use that as a reference.

    May have ask this on one of your earlier videos, what's your thoughts on adding a Biocide to the fuel tank of a 6.7 diesel, love the air lift system had one installed on my F350, now added an auxiliary fuel tank in the bed and always use the cetane booster, your videos got me under the truck to do a oil & fuel filter change also purchased the quick release oil plug. Keep them coming

    • @EpicCowlick
      @EpicCowlick  7 лет назад +1

      I think the diesel fuel should be as little messed-with as possible. The 30,000 psi fuel pump depends on quality fuel and most additives do little if any good and some can do serious harm. Cetane booster? Sure, but anything that emulsifies water would be a big no no.

      Ford put the 3" receiver on the early 2017s but changed back to 2.5 inch after a little while. The 3" is rated 20,000 lbs with 2,000 lb tongue weight if memory serves.

    Great video on Weigh Safe hitches. I researched online and viewed your vid which helped me to decide to get one. Got the 2.5" 8" drop version. Great quality safety device. I have a Reese Elite 25k 5th Wheel along with the factory receiver (allowing for 20k 5th wheel or 15k trailer tow capacities with the 3.55 gearing).
    Bought the truck for our new to RVing this summer, and deciding on 5th Wheel or tow behind toy hauler, leaning towards the Winnebago Spyder 29KS or the Scorpion 3480. Seeing as you also have a toy hauler, interested in your feedback in general re the F350 towing performance and 5th vs hitch pull or videos.
    Funny thing though is that I didn't realize you had the 2017 F350 Platinum until I later happened across your tire spacer video (as I'm looking to increase my tire size on OEM wheels as well) for my 17 F350 Platinum.
    How are the Toyo's working and the spacers?
    Keep up the interesting vids.

    • @EpicCowlick
      @EpicCowlick  7 лет назад +1

      All good questions. I'm really enjoying the Weigh Safe hitch. Great to have a single solution for all different ball sizes and have the scale feature too. It's just an awesome product. As to the 5th wheel vs tag trailer, they really are two different animals. A 5th wheel is extremely stable and easy to pull especially in windy conditions. You have to learn to swing wider on turns but that's about the only negative I can think of. It's a huge upgrade over a ball hitch for longer or heavier trailers.
      The wheel spacers are not a long term solution. They do give just a little extra clearance and that's great but it's difficult to center the wheel on only 1/8th inch of hub. It's easy to be a little out of balance which you can feel on the freeway. I've put the spacers on the shelf and adapted to the rubbing. It only happens on full lock so it's not a problem for me. The Toyo RT's are a great compromise between AT's and MT's. I just got back from a 5,100 mile towing trip and they worked great. They also worked very well in some deep sand and over rocks in Moab. They're my new goto model.

      Thanks for your quick feedback. I look forward to using the Weigh Safe. Also thanks for 5th vs tow insight.
      It's a shame the spacers didn't work out. I really like the Toyo's so I may make due with rubbing near lock just as you are. Sorry, should have asked how Toyo's are working for you in the snow in winter?
      Again thanks for your feedback.

      I've heard there is a 37/11.50 size available which would clear all suspension parts even at full lock. I'm planning to try that size next time around. These tires did really well in the snow last winter. They were brand new so maybe that's part of it. This year will be the best test of ice and snow.

    • @EpicCowlick
      @EpicCowlick  6 лет назад

      The new versions hitch is higher off ground. About 1.5 inches in stock config. I found that going from a 6 inch to an 8 inch drop was just right. This truck is leveled 2.5 inches and I have 37/12.50/20 tires.

      There's so many variables, it's hard to tell. I have the 8 inch and in my case I use the lowest setting all the time. If it came down even two full inches it would still have plenty of clearance when towing. If you end up with a lot of sag, airbags will fix you right up!

      If crossed, the chains will catch the tongue of the trailer and hold it off the road if the trailer becomes unattached. If not, the trailer tongue will go instantly to the road and can catch on any irregular surface.

    The weight on a trailer should always be right above the trailer axles.

    • @EpicCowlick
      @EpicCowlick  7 лет назад

      That may be true on some trailers but is not always true for all trailers. If placement over the trailer axles does not leave enough weight on the hitch, the trailer will become dangerously unstable at speed. Trailer sway is controlled primarily by make sure there is proper weight on the hitch. ruclips.net/video/i2fkOVHAC8Q/видео.html

      Ford made it that way on the first 6 months of the new model's production and then reverted back to the 2.5. There are some models that have the 3" but it's not across the board anymore. It's kind of a unicorn feature.

      That's what I have. My previous truck worked with a six inch drop with all my trailers but this truck is 2 inches higher. So it's easy math to say I need an 8 inch drop. 10 inches would just be too much and would likely drag.

      I went with the 8 inch drop. A good rule of thumb is that whatever you were using before on the previous version super duty this one is 2 inches taller. If you were using a 6 inch drop with all your trailers before, the 8 inch drop is what is needed for the 2017.

      I've used mine a lot and it works great. I've heard of some complaints that the scale fails but in every case people leave the hitch in full time. Dirt and grime collecting between the ball and base will eventually gum it up. I keep my hitch under the back seat and use it only when I'm actually towing.

    You said 6" drop on your trailer. How did you figure that out so quick?

    • @EpicCowlick
      @EpicCowlick  7 лет назад +1

      Mostly because I've pulled that trailer quite a bit and I already know what height it needs to be level. This 2017 Ford is fully 2 inches higher than the 2011 and on that one I used a 4 inch drop for this trailer. So, easy math, 6 inch drop with the Weigh Safe hitch. I have another enclosed trailer that is even lower and I use the full 8 inch drop for that one.

      Hello, if you were to purchase again, would you go with the 10". Also how many inches is it from the top of the receiver to the ground? And how many inches from the bottom of the weigh safe to the ground (clearance)? Lastly, do you notice any difference not using a weight distributing hitch (I know ford says not required with 3" hitch)? Thanks in advance, I ordered the same truck (10-18 week wait) and I can't find this info anywhere.

    • @EpicCowlick
      @EpicCowlick  7 лет назад

      Good questions. It's 25 inches from the ground to the top of the receiver and 14 inches to the bottom of the adjustable shank. Be aware that I have 37/12.50/20 tires which raise the truck about 1.25 inches higher than the OEM Michellins. I have no need for a 10 inch drop even with my lowest trailer. I haven't pulled a tag trailer with a weight distributing hitch for several years so I can't really speak to that question. I have read reports from other owners that the truck does very well without it but many still use anti-sway devices just for extra precaution.
