- CONTENT WARNINGS!: unsettling imagery, fast-moving images, flashing lights, implied child abuse, and spoilers for The Owl House Season 2's ending.
The internet hyped this up so much I was so NERVOUS to have it air oh my gosh. After a dozen days of long-hauling, it's complete! I found this song and made me want to explore Hunter's arc from his cameo to the end of season 2 - and mixing in the unsettling, eerie, and downright tragically abusive situation he's been put into because of Belos. It's hard coming to terms with an abuser when you're just a kid with a pall over your eyes.
I dedicate this to Dana Terrace, the TOH crew, and Zeno Robinson for all their incredible work in making a show like The Owl House and also to everyone personally touched by this show. (And check out the artist of the song, too, "Fish in a Birdcage", just like the song's namesake. I discovered their work recently and have had it on loop since!)
It's such a labour of love to make a show like this that touches so many hearts (and shatters them. I'll never emotionally recover from the end of Season 2 actually I can cry command if I think too hard about it. oh here come the waterworks again actually).

1:27 This shot where Hunter's hopeful eyes are replaced by Belos' angry eyes is incredible. Where Hunter sees getting the key as a victory, Belos sees as failure.
It’s stuff like this that makes me appreciate Luz as a protagonist all the more than I already do. The moment that she realized that he was around her age was when she showed him the light. She made him feel like an actual person and when he was scolded by her, it came from her sense of empathy and desire to protect the palismen. One of those palismen being Flapjack. She allowed the two to meet and allowing for his development by having him care for a palismen that’s stubborn to stay by his side.
Amity after being with Luz for so long begins to understand not needing to justify her own existence and relays that information to Hunter and how he shouldn’t have the need to justify his own existence. However him seeing the key sets him off but it turns around as he learns Flapjack’s name and begins to bond with him due to him never once leaving his side.
Willow and Gus are what truly brought the best out of him thanks to both of them having a clean slate with him and not knowing all too much about him. Thanks to a confident Willow and Gus keeping an eye on him. Hunter sees them for who they really are. Strong and caring friends. Unrelated but if it wasn’t for Luz ever coming to the Boiling Isles, Willow would be working for Amity without her ever getting any development.
Gus also brought out the better in Hunter thanks to his general caring nature and sort of got him to act as an older brother to him by protecting Gus from Gray. Ironically the deep breathing Gus told Hunter about was originally from Willow, once again leaning into Hunter’s affection for Willow kicking in.
Hunter owes so much to Luz as she was the one who helped him see the truth for what it is and being the one to lend a helping sleeve as he sinks deeper into Belos’ mindscape. She even told the Hexside gang to not scare Hunter away because she knew that he was in a terrible mental state. And because of that, it allowed him to not be antagonized by the school and allowed him the opportunity to truly turn sides.
Now he wakes up not in the grasp of Belos(entirely). But instead surrounded by people that care about him and are willing to help him.
It’s just as Eda once said, “My life is pretty great because I’m friends with Luz the Human”

YES!! Luz is very under appreciated within the fandom when she’s a catalyst for most of the positive character developments.

@@infinityheart_tm9270 I mean the reason Willow was under Amity this whole time is because she was told she was weak and was under the mindset that she was and then never came to breaking out of that.
But I feel like it could’ve been resolved somehow eventually by either Willow or Amity but definitely Luz sped up this process and gave them a healthier start.

THIS IS INCREDIBLE!! The music is so fitting, the art is gorgeous and the detailed along with the backgrounds all help build the parts of Hunter's story we've seen and show how he's struggled and grown over time. Also, I saw that blush with Willow! Fantastic work over all and I can't believe you got so much done in such a small amount of time!
This song in general fits hunter so well. The fast paced violin thats unsettling and almost sad. You really did him justice in this animatic, the pacing, color palette the backgrounds, the animation, everything about it is just well executed. Belos is portrayed amazingly as well, he's genuinely terrifying and always manages to either make me mad or unsettled, sometimes both in the show, and you showed that masterfully. Keep doing your amazing work!!
The shot at 2:56 showing the Day of Unity is near gives me the chills
THIS WAS SO GOOD, OH MY GOD. I absolutely love the direction you took with all the different scenes, and the "brother" being represented by different people involved with his story! And the little moments too, like Hunter just frantically grabbing Flapjack close to his chest the moment he spies Belos, because he knows what'll happen, oh my god that hit my heart. And god, the framing was already so good, BUT THEN THAT HOLLOW MIND SECTION HIT. That circling effect, it feels nauseating, like how the impact of everything must feel. And that ending! Oh my god, just. The aftermath of the finale and the exhausted feeling of it all is. Oh my god I cannot love this enough, it hits all the right places!!
Yeah the lyrics really work for the different sections. Belos being a bird lying to a fish about what it can be, then Luz being the sibling that starts to open his eyes to the world, flapjack providing empathy, the emerald entrails providing something new as well a feeling of belonging, then back to Belos’s lies and manipulation, then Luz opening his eyes fully and Gus helping him through it. Ah it’s so good and well thought out!
The part with Flapjack is doubly sad now... 😭

"my brother always sings me songs" god, that line's so fitting for both Hunter and Belos himself
This is absolutely gorgeous!! The way you portray Hunter, his experience, and emotions does his character such justice! 2:05 - 2:22 however is my favorite scene in this, and it give me chills every time I watch it! There's something so deeply uncomfortable about watching Hunter's reaction to seeing Belos that brings the watcher back to the fact that Belos is and was abusive towards Hunter. Great job again, I cannot stop coming back to watch this!

another thing I love to mention, he last verse of the song "Brother of mine" instead Luz was counting on Hunter. I found it fitting, cuz it went full circle with Luz needing to face with problems Hunter faced in the past. Belos, and being some what of a failure in her mind after the day of unity.

This entire animation was BREATHTAKING. The shots and framing, the lighting, the symbolism, the way the visuals matched the words, the LIP SYNC... the whole thing wrenched at my heart, and the extra scene at the end destroyed what was left of it. You should be proud of yourself, this is GORGEOUS!

This animatic brings me pure joy in a way I can’t explain.
Luz’s relationship with Hunter is one of the best I’ve ever seen. She took a puppet of Belos’s and showed him that he was following the wrong path. The way she comforted him in Thanks To Them, when they went into the basement of the old house in search of Belos, where she told him that they were family was such an important role for Hunter. Belos never told him that he loved him, or even really that he cared, compared to Luz telling him that he was family now, and hugging him. It’s such a small scene with so much emotion packed into it. For sure my favorite scene in the show.

The fluid animation when Hunter jumps down into the paintings and when he runs with Gus are so smooth and dynamic!! OMG and when he bumps into Belos- the look of FEAR in Flapjack’s eyes, that scene is incredible! This must have taken so long, but it’s beautiful work. I love it!

Sometimes people watch an animatic that they liked and say it was underrated and I try not to say that unless I mean it because it’s such a common compliment, but I mean it when I say THIS IS SO UNDERRATED. SCENES FROM THE SHOW RE-ANIMATED TO FIT THE WORDS AND TEMPO OF THE SONG, THE WAY THE SONG TIES TO HUNTER SO WELL - I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS!
This is absolutely amazing! It summarizes Hunter’s character development in just a couple of minutes, the animation is absolutely stunning. This video is the whole definition of underrated if I’ve ever seen one! 😄

I- I C-CANNTTT!!! I LITERALLY FINISHED THIS SERIES A DAY AGO THE PAIN IS STILL FRESH!!! 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I'm sure you've gotten so many praises for this animatic, but I need to gush about this because this was *stunningly* made. It was more than I ever expected going into it. I've never seen your channel before to my memory, but this animatic makes you one of the greatest animators I've seen already. The pacing, the perspectives/angles, the tweening and snippets of animation, the lighting, the tone, and the flow of it all were amazing. You perfectly encapsulated Hunter's journey throughout Season 2, all of the most significant moments from episodes 6, 9, 13, 16, 18, and 20. I can't get over how amazing it is, and how you packed so much information into only 5 minutes (edit: not even, a little over 4 minutes, and only 3 minutes of the song). Let's not forget the in-betweens you included, like Flapjack helping Hunter clean up after Eclipse Lake and Flapjack seeing the level of control Belos has over Hunter when Hunter has to hide Flapjack after chasing him through the halls. Some of the moments that stand out stunningly to me were the spin-around with the portraits from episode 16, when Hunter is dragged into the ground in Belos' mind with the glyphs saving him, Hunter walking down the hall with his cape flowing behind him, and the beginning segments with Belos and the Collector.. circle? behind him. And of course, the "epilogue" from the ending of episode 21, and the moment Hunter gets those flashbacks on the thunderstrike was so full of panic and terror. It felt so... real, like I could tell EXACTLY what Hunter was thinking through his facial expressions, no flashbacks required. And of course, a soft moment where Hunter, Willow, and Gus comfort each other.
This animatic is just... it might be one of my favorite animation videos ever. It's so well crafted and it's clear you put your heart and soul into this passion project. I subbed even before the video ended, so I'm excited to see more (your art style is really appealing)

I love how this song fits Hunter so darn well. Hunter has such admirable traits that would lead him to flourish in the right environment, but he is kept from developing by a regime that exploits those same traits to keep him a compliant asset. That part of his story fits the concept of the song so well it’s like it was written for him.
You could have gone two very different ways with “indistinguishability” and I’m VERY grateful for the one you chose

I love seeing Hunter with his fake bird brother vs Hunter with his true bird brother. The fake one won't let him leave the cage, while the true one says "it can be dangerous out there, so I'll come with you."
I cannot put into words how amazing this is omg???? I love how it tells Hunter's whole story so far from him being at the top of the world to him being miserable to him having friends he can count on
I love the way the actions match up with the ringing bell, I love Flapjack rubbing his little face on Hunter's to clean off the abomination goo, I love the lip syncing of the scene where he jumps in front of the Entrails, I love the look of absolute fear on Flapjack's face at Belos, I love how you can *feel* the horror in Hunter's face in the mindscape (and that spinning was really cool), I love how fluid him running around Hexside (and dragging Gus with him) was, I love the look of realisation on his face when under the Luz illusion, and I love the Huntlow and Labyrinth Brothers content at the end

This was an amazingly well done animation with a great song chosen for it. The part after the waking up was so well done as well, the silence, save for the storm sounds spoke so much about the pain of the experiences but at least Hunter was not alone, he had Gus and the one who will always catch him, Willow.

I'm in love with this animatic. The fact that the first seconds are representing that Belos is the "brother" of him, and a bit later the whole thing turns into having Luz as someone who can bring him hope and show him the world is just amazing.
Everything that I could say has kind of already been said, but wow, you deserve to be very proud of this. The art and movement is outstanding, and the song is both a great song and one that fits the story perfectly. You have earned a new subscriber!!!!
I absolutely love this! The transitions, the animation, the story? Immaculate. I love how as the animation goes on the word 'brother' changes who it seems to be referring to. I'll have to give it another watch to be sure I'm reading into that right. But this is really stunning and really pulled at my heart strings. I love the cut to black and the rain and thunder after the music. It really adds a whole other layer to this animation and the meaning it has. Excellent work!

The Owl House many similarities or moments where Luz and Belos echo each other. In that same way, other than hunter, Luz and Belos were the only ones to “speak” during the animation, and they both said the same thing: Has to be true. Great attention to detail!

i’m absolutely obsessed with this song and always thought it would make a great animatic and this is better than anything i could have ever imagined.
Definitely good animatic material but I could never think of a story it would fit. And then they go and find the perfect story for it to fit!
i LOVE the part where Hunter catches Flapjack before Belos saw him, that freaked me out just as much as Hunter freaked up I imagine lol

I liked how Flapjack comforted Hunter, that was sweet! Also the ending was powerful with Hunter jumping back in fright with Willow catching him and Gus coming up behind them. I imagine that they are all wondering if they’ll ever make it back to the Boiling Isles.
