This is awesome; I live near the Backyard & have enjoyed a few of their bottles; their rye is pretty good too! Great bourbon selection as well; Cheers!
I can say, I have learned so much from watching this channel. The way Randy tells the history is like a good tv show I can’t stop watching. Love the content and the history Randy teaches! Peace and love to all, keep pouring!! Cheers 🥃
Being from the New Orleans area, I can say definitively that "The Backyard" is a delicious little gem in the NOLA area...and besides an expansive bourbon ye selection, they put out some stellar juice. Randy, glad ya got to visit.
Even though there is a big difference in price, it would be interesting to know if the net profit per bottle (at the distillery) is greater than Willets.
You gotta love somebody whose first words on the show are, "I'm a Texan." That is something to be proud of. ⭐ One quibble, Randy. It sounds like you're saying "tidehouse," but I believe you mean a "tied house." Talking to fast leads to such slurring of phrases - but I'm a Texas hick, and everyone thinks I talk too slow. 😂 ❤
I know it is tied house laws, but I would not know how to pronounce tide and tied differently, so it will likely always sound the same when I say it. I am not smart, I am just driven 🤣
@@BourbonRealTalk It's not the pronunciation of tide/tied, but saying the words so quickly. When you say tidehouse it conveys something different from tied house - two words with a space between them. What can I say - I just can't hear that fast. 😂
Very interesting video. As you stated, we have a few local Tasting Rooms for the local distillery’s but they do only sell their own product in the cocktails.
It appears that they only sell products of their own making. From what I can tell they have a license to produce spirits and beer, but not a license as an on premise bar.
Randy, if you're getting fruit rollup, makes me think barton distillery. The age also is kind of a hint given they have some old stock. Kudos on the new aroma kit plug. Pretty funny.
@BourbonRealTalk you're right. Commented while watching the video and before you mentioned potstill notes. I get strong dark fruit notes on barton distillate (along with oak and vanilla). You said fruit rollup and i immediately thought barton. Never got fruit rollup from willett but I've only had one of the older sourced purple tops
Most states allow distilleries to sell their own products, but unique thing here is they are licensed as both a distillery and a retail location, and they do not just sell their own products like most distilleries do at their tasting room. They also sell other producer's products that they purchased through the 3 tier system.
Nearly 100% of distilleries also have a bar. What I have never seen is them serving products they didn't make at their bar. To do that you have to have a license to legally purchase and sell those products, and normally you can not hold that license and hold the license to make your own spirits.
I'm not 100%, but I thought it was perfectly legal in NC for a distillery bar to mix in products they don't make. Retail sales of bottles to go must be what they make, but they can mix or serve anything they want. "Authorization of distillery permit. Fee: $300.00 (Statute 18B-1105) Authorized Acts. - The holder of a distillery permit may: Can sell mixed beverage with liquor produced at the distillery, if sales are legal obtain a mixed beverage permit to sell mixed drink with liquor produced by other distilleries." Edit: I just looked up several, it's not hard to find distilleries with mixed beverage, beer, and wine on permit licenses.
@@BourbonRealTalk Yes sir, I just looked up the permits at several distilleries. All of them had malt beverage, wine and mixed drink licenses in addition to the distillery and related permits. And NC really isn't known for being permissive with liquor laws to say the least.
@@MrJhchrist Interesting. Looks like a state thing. I wonder if someone could go the other direction in the state and start off as a bar and then get licensed as a DSP like Backyard did.
@@BourbonRealTalk I don't see any reason why not, though the only bars I can think of that did so put the distillery and cocktail bar in a nearby but separate location. But there were obvious space, capacity and market segment reasons too. You can usually more per drink in a distillery cocktail bar than you can for a shot in a burger and beer bar.
This was informative and fun. Thanks for having me on the show.
Wow that unique. As a New Orleans native I was really intrigued but wanted more info. Definitely making a stop by soon now!
Love hearing about these small distilleries! Looks like I need to find a reason to take a trip to New Orleans
Was in NOLA last December; wish I had known about The Backyard at that time! Guess we’ll need to go back 🥃

I just started dabbling with cigar and whiskey pairings. It’s been interesting!! Can’t wait to potentially see Wes back!!! Cheers
Very interesting, really wished they could at least give the state of distillation.

Enjoyed listening to
Thank you!
Dorcol Distillery in San Antonio does this

Congrats on the job!

I didn't think BBC had any potstill distillate.

i thought selling pot was illegal but now they have ThcA buds in every gas station in america. distilleries sell bottles from their 'gift shop'

Love the show, love the messages, missed the pretty girl.
She will be missing from Friday episodes in the future.
Acre in ft forth is a bar/distillery. It may fall within this category
