    It looks by far the best of all of the boats you've owned or even operated on the channel! I still remember Ruff Seas. Monohulls can't touch catamarans in terms
    of comfort. Personally, I would find having to cross an ocean on a boat that spends much of the time heeled over awful. The sustainable solar/hybrid setup absolutely
    mind blowing. This definitely falls into the category of dream boat! I can't wait until you pick it up and make your first trip in it! Congratulations on having come so far;
    your hard work has really paid off!

Would love to learn overhere in The Netherlands we have no lending system (anymore since 2008) for boats, so if you want to buy €200k boat (like I did), you need it cash. How is that at your place?

  • @voilesnews
    @voilesnews 2 года назад +3

    Hello, I'm sorry to tell you but this catamaran is absolutely not suitable for a world tour, as you want to do!
    You have to be careful what you say!
    Why is it not suitable for a world tour?
    - very heavy catamaran
    - a lot of dunnage
    - the crew in the cockpit has no vision of the helmsman who can fall overboard without anyone seeing him
    - lowering the mainsail in a strong wind requires climbing onto the bimini which is very high and this maneuver becomes dangerous in strong winds and rough seas
    - the forward cockpit is very low and adds weight to the front of the catamaran, which makes loading dangerous
    - the forward cockpit can fill with water and thus unbalance the catamaran until it empties
    - etc...
    This catamaran seems perfectly suited for chartering in the Caribbean, but it's certainly not for going around the world, and besides, that's probably not what it was built for.
    The advantage of a catamaran is to be fast and light to easily get out of a complicated weather system during a round the world trip.
    This catamaran is more of a motorhome on the water than a boat.

    Looks to be a great setup overall! There’s a few aspects I’m curious about though. It looks to be a higher profile so I’m curious about the stability factors involved. I see these videos where there’s a capsize potential and I’m wondering what the risk factor is?
    Is the propulsion system thoroughly tested for reliability to where if it should take on water then the water is removed is it able to operate properly afterwards? With seawater and electricity being enemies I’m curious how well they’re kept away from each other. Are you going to go full solar or will you use a backup diesel? The life rafts look to be at the rear and I was curious whether they can be deployed when submerged?
    Obviously these issues are low on the probability list but should they occur it’ll be in the first couple months or near the end of life when bugs are going to occur. While in the middle it’ll bring a lot of great memories. Congratulations on the upcoming boat. Fair winds and following seas Bobby!

    • @rhett7716
      @rhett7716 2 года назад

      thats why theyve reduced mast height !!

    • @kevinstonerock3158
      @kevinstonerock3158 2 года назад +1

      While they may have reduced mast height they’ve also reduced the foot since it’s above the top deck. With the increased profile it could increase wind loading. Since it’s going to be used in open ocean conditions there’s a potential for it to be subject to wave and also rogue waves around storms. The taller the profile the more it’s vulnerable to wind and wave broadsides. Again, the probability is pretty low, but it’s just something to be aware of while sailing.

    Congratulations on the new boat. Interesting idea going all electric with Large solar, Lithium and a Large GenSet. Love the idea of galley as all electric. But personally I just have my doubts about swapping two diesel motors for one, hence reducing redundancy. Plus Generators are (not always, but usually) less reliable than Drive motors. I personally think that going a hybrid with larger alternators would be the better way but its all swings and roundabouts and personal preference about what your prepared to compromise on.
    I'm currently looking at the new McConaghy 55 but it looks like I'm still a few years away from being able to put pen to paper on one. I will be looking at addressing electric, hybrid or diesel closer to the time as that's an area that's fast improving. As much solar as the boat can carry should be a given nowadays, along with decent lithium storage (in whatever form that might take, time will tell).
    All the best mate.

    • @jm3779
      @jm3779 2 года назад

      The layout shows 2 generators 1st is the solar and 2nd the diesel, propulsion the same you have a port and a starboard electric drive. The weakpoint might be the battery system if’s a single one. I would like to see two individual battery systems. When motor sailing most catamarans use a single engine anyway. If you able to cross connect the two drive’s to a single battery for port and marina maneuvers you should be suited with a very redundant system.

  • @Furrrburger

    Hey Bobby, killer boat man! That will be nice to get away from some of the diesel maintenance. That battery is huge at 210 kWh, Teslas are generally 60 to 75 kWh for the model 3 and Y, and the model S & X get up to 100 kWh. So you've got almost three model Y batteries there, nice! I had a 4 kW solar system on my house and in peak summer, it would produce around 25 kWh per day. At 4.8 kW, you're probably producing around 30 kWh per day, so you're looking at around 7 days of solid sun, to fully recharge that battery. The backup generator will be nice just in case, but it will be cool to see how efficient the boat is under electric power alone.

    Cool boat. From watching so many of your videos I had two thoughts. One, that's a lot of boat to wash after every passage! %^) The second, from my engineer perspective, there's a lot of components to have problems with on the hybrid drive. You spend a huge amount of time on basic maintenance on a standard drive boat. Adding a very complex electric drive/solar system component presents a whole new world of failure and nuisance issues. New technology always sounds great, but rarely works as well as we imagine it should.

    Congrats on the new boat! I love the concept and it will be very interesting to see how these actually perform in real cruising conditions when real data is available. With fuel being such a tiny portion of a sailing cruiser's budget, it is still challenging to make a business case for going electric with today's tech, but the future is bright. Hopefully this boat does actually come in at 16.5T, that seems very optimistic.
