To me, Eclipse is about death . You are the sun or light and that light is extinguished by the eclipse of the moon. The reason I think it's about death is because the song talks about everything you experience in life. Also, the beginning of the album starts with a heartbeat and the song breath marking the beginning of life and the end of the album ends with a fading heartbeat.
Dark side is one of THE GREATEST ALBUM'S EVER MADE.👍👍

Perhaps this has already been addressed but I thought I'd comment on the "their folded faces to the floor" as I think it may be the best lyric on the album. Sadly the meaning is truly lost to time. It was written in an age where there were newspapers and paperboys. I was one. I delivered the papers after folding them neatly with a rubber band and tossed them on the porch. And everyday I brought more. And those folded newspapers held the news of all the bad in the world and the people who manage it-brain damaged.

Every time I listen to this album, I find new little notes I missed and absolutely fall in love again. It's one of the best albums across all genres ever.
Gilmour is a Guitar God. Epic. Glacial. Crystalline. Rock.
Remember so clearly dropping by a friend's apartment during college, sunny afternoon, maybe spring (?) And he had just bought the newly released Dark Side and asked if I wanted to listen. So he and I and his girlfriend dropped and listened to the whole album. Wow. Was blown away then and still to this day.

Hard to believe this year is the 50th anniversary of the release of The Dark Side Of The Moon. Still every bit as powerful and awe-inspiring as it ever was.
Timeless masterpiece
Although Brain Damage is Roger's commentary on the fearful process of losing one's mind, he most definitely included references to their former bandmate, lead guitarist and main singer/songwriter Syd Barrett (...and if the band you're in starts playing different tunes) who, unfortunately, never recovered from his overuse of LSD. He literally lost his mind and eventually became just a shell of his former brilliant self.
It’s so relevant. Every time I hear those lyrics now, I think about Ukraine and the utter insanity of what’s going on over there and our dangerous involvement as well.
The folded faces references political leaders or others who had their pictures in the paper and their apparent insanity relating to involvements in world events such as wars etc…
This side of the album shared a lot of the atmosphere of Meddle. This was a golden era of musical creativity when record companies stepped back and gave the bands free rein. Then slowly and insidiously the record companies regain control. Music returned to being a product. On the vinyl disc the heart beat is in the last groove and will repeat endlessly.
My 'big' brother took me to see them for my birthday, 1974 aged 14, the Dark Side of the Moon tour Empire theatre Liverpool UK ..😳 here I am, nearly 50 years later, still bangin this out 😏 (albeit on a stupid "mickey mouse" Bluetooth speaker, God I miss my music system...BIG TIME.. 😂
Most of the people you see in the video are politicians for me they are the lunatics for me it's not about drugs pink floyd lyrics have been written by thought provoking intelligent people I bought this album within weeks of its release and listened to it god nows how many times over the years these guys were well ahead of their time I'm 74 years young now and I rarely go a day without listening to some of pink Floyd's fabulous creations most of it is still relevant today I am in no doubt pink floyd masters of sycadelic progressive rock music
Yes, it was named as Eclipse originally, but it was renamed as Dark Side of the Moon
Yes, "The Dark Side Of The Moon" album is about Life, Death, War, Greed, and Insanity. the insanity part at the end of the album is a reference to Syd Barrett. Syd Barrett was one of the four founding members of Pink Floyd in 1964.
Unfortunately, he had a mental breakdown exacerbated by his massive use of LSD and other mind-altering drugs, he was forced to leave Pink Floyd by 1968. His good friend and friend of the band, David Gilmour took, over for Syd.
In fact, one of the lyrics in "Brain Damage", is a direct reference to Syd Barrett.
By 1966 Syd's drug use was having serious effects on him and his performing, he had become erratic in the studio and live. David Gilmour had been playing with the band all during 1967, before he replaced Barrett in 1968, because the band couldn't rely on Syd to be able to perform.
Sometimes when onstage, Syd would stare straight ahead like in a trance,.. or, he would just stop playing all together,... or on some occasions he started 'playing a different song than the rest of the band was playing'.
Therein lies the lyric,..... "And When The Band You're In Starts Playing Different Tunes, I'll See You On The Dark Side Of The Moon"
In my opinion, "the dark side of the moon" is a reference to isolation or simply a difficult to reach place. In Brain Damage, the lyric "The lunatics are in the hall / The paper holds their folded faces to the floor" refers to newspapers featuring pictures of people in positions of power with psychotic levels of greed and lust for power over everyone else. Overall, the entire album addresses themes of loneliness, insanity, greed and death. I think the thought built up across Waters' lyrics is that if you attempt to tackle all those problems alone, you're going to FEEL lonely and you might very well go insane. The lyrics in Brain Damage hint that we'll fare better if we reach out to help one another. "And if the dam breaks open many years too soon / And if there is no room upon the hill / And if your head explodes with dark forebodings too / I'll see you on the dark side of the moon". The lyrics in Eclipse itemize all the things that can come together in synergy if we attempt to help one another and "sync" efforts -- like the sun, moon and earth in sync for a total eclipse.
Nick Mason, PF’s drummer, was renowned for the slow, precise and at times, intense drumming on this album….just saying
And this album is 50 years old this year…..it does not age.

I never tire of this masterpiece. It's great seeing others discover it.
I've been a fan of Pink Floyd for as long as I can remember, I have played this whole album for my children and grandchildren, everyone of them know this album from beginning to end!! I told my family that when I go to, the gig is the sky, I want this album playing in headphones on a continuous loop!! When this album came out it was my brother who bought it for me, my friends and I would smoke a joint, turn off the lights and light a candle and not move or speak, someone was assigned the job of turning the album over when needed, and we continued our amazing journey!! Growing up in my generation was amazing, we lived through a lot of history and we were blessed to witness the boom of amazing music!! I'm going to be sixty six this year and I've listened to this album more times than I can count!! Great reaction!! You popped up on my recommendations, that beautiful young woman was taking this album in, she was feeling every bit of it, and it was fun watching her!!
The sax on this beautiful track is what I would describe as musical velvet Mr parry puts so much feeling into his playing it's gorgeous and if you di😢😢gest the lyrics and interpretate there true meaning it makes you see the world in a not so pleasant way we all need to get our act together

This is the BEST album EVER. It was released the same year I got out of high school. I think it is a musical masterpiece!!!! So many great tunes in one place....... Pink is underrated by many. Was that a journey or what???? Thank you two for this video!!! A great decision to listen to the entire piece in one sitting!! Take care and stay safe...................

Every night on the nightstand an old phone and BT speaker plays this side of Dark Side. Followed with Echoes at Pompeii and Shine on you crazy diamond in the playlist. I usually drift off just after Eclipse ends
''And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes..'' turned out to be an oddly prophetic line in retrospect...
In Us and Them, notice how the echoes in most of the verses and prominent, except in the one lyric ‘with, without’, which is not echoed. A tiny detail which reflects their brilliance.
Always took the paper reference to the newspapers of the day ... delievered to your door ... just another viewpoint ..
Pretty sure we’ve been arguing about the meaning(s) of the album overall since it came out! All I ever did was roll up a king sized one light up and disappear inside my headphones for 45 minutes. Thank you both for another wonderful time with a great album. Looking forward to the next adventure. Best wishes from England 🏴.

Unfortunately, Floyd didn't play the entire album for the show I saw in 1994, at Three Rivers Stadium. Upon reflection, it's probably a good thing, because at the conclusion of Eclipse, I would have been reduced to a quivering pile of jelly. My brothers would have had to take me home in a bucket. I still get tears listening to that.

Any Colour You Like is utterly timeless. One of their best tracks.
Roger Waters has a strong idea about the choice of the title (Any Color You Like) and its meaning. In Cambridge, where he lived at the time, vendors came from London in vans to sell bric-a-brac of cheap crockery and cutlery. One day when one of them had hooked up a customer for a set of Chinese plates, Roger overheard him selling his product, adding: "Yes ma'am, you can have them for 10p, the color of your choice, they are all BLUE (Any color you like, they're all blue)" Which led him to believe that all choices in a man's life are guided. No matter what path you take, karma will always catch up with you. Man thinks of making his own decisions, choosing his own color, but everything is already dictated, everything is BLUE. Typically Waters metaphor.

Their music relaxes me, then before you realize it, your heart rate is 120. I also either want to know what their message is before I hear the song, or I never want to hear what their message is. Once I form my own interpretation, it’s a buzzkill if I find out that my interpretation is not the same as theirs, that goes for all songs and all bands. Pink Floyd is masterful in their songwriting and performance. Some of their lyrics are purposely ambidextrous, letting the listener take their own journey as if the song was written specifically for them. They were ahead of their time, but in the exact perfect time they needed to be.
The song is in reference to. Pink Floyd co founder Syd Barrett and his struggle with sanity. Many years after he left the band do to his dark struggle he returned to the studio to listen to the band rehearse . he just stood there. After he left they asked who he was and were shaken because they didnt recognize him

Rick recycled the melody for Us and Them from music he wrote for Antonioni's film Zabriskie Point that he rejected because he felt it was too sad so it never made it on to the film. It was perfect for this setting.
I still remember the day I sat in my friends living room with the liner notes in my lap and listened to this album in entirety.
Google it, but I think it in the top 50 albums for 10 yrs. and is still selling like crazy. Im 72 and I partied to this for 5 yrs. Someone always had the vinyl.

I so enjoyed listening along with you! it took me back to 1973 hearing it for the first time, in Hastings, UK, when a housemate came back from buying this much anticipated new release... he said I could stay and listen but only if I didn't say a word from start to finish... and so we lay on the big bed and listened in silence, floating along with the music...
I was just thinking (this time) during Us and Them, that the theme of the lyrics is kind of similar to John Lennon's Imagine... both showing us the imagined/ created dualities in life that keep us apart from each other, even to the point of going to war...
They approach it differently, John's song is relatively clear and up front in its message, while Roger's is more contemplative, allowing us space to meditate on these dual concepts, leaving it up to us to formulate our own answers. Just my thoughts...

I honestly had never thought of it in those terms. That the “dark side of the moon” is actually facing the sun, but we can’t see it. That was a very neat way to put it. Also, my wife also was a bit freaked out when she first heard this. The heartbeat made her very uncomfortable. But she loves it now. Sometimes those things that make us uncomfortable are the things we need the most.
As a former L.S.D. user i can tell you that Pink Floyd actually got that last line wrong, it should be (and this is based on an actual experience), "Everything under the sun is in tune WHEN the sun is eclipsed by the moon". True Story.

What great about the Floyd is the music never sounds dated. I’d be willing to bet if dark side were released today as a new bands first album it would go to #1. As a bit of information. When you listen to brain damage at the end of the song you hear a maniacal laugh followed by “there is no dark side of the moon, it’s all dark”. That is Syd Barrett who came to the studio during recording and none of the band recognized him because he was bald and looked nothing like himself. He and Roger waters were talking when Syd laughed and said it. It just happened to be caught on an open mic and Rodger’s decided to use it.
One of the best albums of all time , bought new for 5 bucks. It had a poster of pyramids on the dark side of the moon
I remember getting quite stoned and sitting around in a dark room listening to this album from end to end on vinyl on a great old tube stereo with friends back in the 70's and listening to it now it's amazing how incredible it still sounds. You need to listen to it under those circumstances to fully appreciate it's beauty. Actually the dark side of the moon is a misnomer. The "backside" of the moon is only dark to us because it never points in our direction but sometimes it is pointing toward the sun and at those times it's brilliantly lit.

Us and Them has to be in my top 5 PF songs (#1 being Echoes) - just the whole vibe, sax, lyrics, ebb & flow - it's pure perfection.
I've always loved Eclipse, and the final spoken word "there is no dark side of the moon really, matter of fact it's all dark"
I bought this album about a week after it came out. I played side 1, then side2, then said, turn it over and play it again. I knew ti was something that was one of a kind. And my klipschhorn speakers never sounded better with my 400 watt pioneer amplifier.
Roger Waters' dad was killed in Italy in WWII. I think many PF songs make allusions to that war and what people lived through. 'Listen son said the man with the gun, there's room for you inside' may be a reference to air raid shelters in England during German bombing of London. 'The man with the gun' would be a reference to the local civilian Home Guard who directed people to shelters. The album The Wall has LOTS of references to that war.
Stil one of the best albums ever. Came out in 1973/74...and here we are still talking about it. E very song on it you know, no skipping over, lol. Great reaction and I love her shirt, the colors and all.

I got lampooned by a mate going on a lads holiday for bringing a cassette of a band call Pink Floyd(DSOTM). Needless to say he had the album on repeat. We didn't see him for 2 weeks
When I first heard this album as a teen discovering himself along with my friends, we would eat some tickets and analyze the meaning of every lick and lyric, rinse and repeat every two weeks, and narrow it down a bit yet without a unanimous conclusion. Too much fun.

Thinking of Syd this might also be LSD; paperboy the dealer; LSD is/was(?) served in droplets on pics.
I know I’m the weirdo here but “Any Colour…” is my favorite track on the whole album. Yes, it DOES feel a bit too close to Alan Parsons for comfort’s sake but I don’t care. They had to play it, not him. That is my favorite.

Us and Them is about WAR. The first songs are the pressures on Syd Barrett and the last songs are what happened to Syd who formed, named and started Pink Floyd. Find out who Syd was, Dave Gilmour replaced him on guitar but they all had to pull the creative load Syd did in the start.
You should watch the movie "The Wall" based on the album of the same name.
Pretty sure the last two tracks are written about Syd Barrett, his struggles with mental illness and drug use, and the way that society treats mental illness. Or at least references Syd and his experiences in service of the other two points.
On my second album. got the Cd, and now have it om MP3 Wore out the first album, but still can't throw it out.
Hi, I believe Us and Them was written about black civil rights. The black and blue are referring to the black marches and the police, there are lots of other references to black segregation, and the final words are about poor pay for the black community. 😢
HOW come sometimes we can hear you and sometimes we can not hear you?
Whilst it's is great to lie down and listen to, it's also a great track to put on while you're cooking up a storm for friends coming over.
Sometimes we say something at a bad time (listening-wise), or we say it again after the song, so we mute the mics to avoid unnecessarily interrupting the music.

I was hit with the last sentence, “ listen son said the man with the gun, there is room for you inside “. Reminded of the US and NATO invitation for weak and small countries of the benefits of lying and abusing others!
And the obvious next step is to dive into the story of Pink with The Wall which can only be listened to in its entirety as well
It's clear to me that this album and each song has it's own meaning and each is subject to every person's own interpretation...there's no exact answer to what each song and each lyric mean without talking to the song writers and band members specifically....I"m sure there are interview questions since this album made its debut where the answers to these questions can be resolved....

Fitting end to a dark but deep look at the human condition, more or less. I believe Eclipse was a drawn out way of saying everything seems to have a connective tissue in some form of rhyme and reason, but something's not quite right about it. Though, you're correct about sunlight on what we call the dark side of the moon. Eclipse or not, it gets 2 weeks of it every month. However, the context of that phrase supposedly means "unknown," not `lacking in sunlight.` Not sure it matters to the point of the song/album, but it is noteworthy and could give a different perspective. Unknown, is definitely not the same as lacking in sunlight.
Please do not confuse the DARK side of the moon with the FAR side of the moon - these are NOT the same. The far side gets just as much sunlight as the side we can see - that is apparent in the moon's phases. As the moon is tidally locked, we only see around 62% of the surface due to the moon's purturbances.
Guys! It's simple. Do you do right or do you do wrong? It's about Idealism.
