You should have the printing press days. YT was two steps forward, but now we took two steps back. Hopefully we figure it out soon because it is concerning
There was a time before ecommerce logistics enabled merch to be common place. People may or may not like gymshark and later alphete, but they definitely innovated utilizing social media for primary product marketing. Part of this commercialization developed as the target audience i.e. younger demographic started using social media more and more as platforms developed. Fascinating stuff. The current subversive algorithm driven content from tiktok is very concerning.
In modern RUclips there is the natty community which has sprung up in the past couple years, bald omni man, natural hypertrophy, GVS, alphadestiny, and more. And their popularity is bringing up a generation of young lifters who love the intricacies and practice of lifting almost more than anything. There is hope in long form content still, but you’ll always have to look for it, and if you want real results you’ll have to, for the sake of learning.

When you spend a majority of your 2 year hiatus with Eric Helms and your character model returns with boosted stats of 100% intellect, articulation and thought processing… For real though, I find my main issue with TikTok and short form content lies in its pushing of extremism. While I think some topics in fitness can be generalized, what’s seems to be the elimination of nuance can be quite detrimental if left unchecked.

I've only been lifting for a couple of years, but have to admit, I've been very interested in the mechanics of different lifts. I'm not referring to the biology, which is very talked about. I've been very interested in the physics and math behind them. I studied materials science in undergrad, and we talk a lot about loaded movements. Not just how much load, say, a steel arm can carry, but also assessing at what ranges of motion it is doing the most work, and where it's at the highest stress. In regards to lifting, I see it as a simple vector integral problem. You have a range of motion, with a top and bottom, and different levels of force you have to apply in given directions. You can play with the range and assess what range provides the best bang for your buck, decide if it's worth increasing the range by a certain amount, or maybe loading the exercise in a way that would increase effort at a different location. These kinds of things have been intuitively approached, but I think it would be fun to approach these in a really rigorous, mathematical way. Who knows, it might be a fun way to teach physics and math as well.
I don't use TikTok for the same reasons that you mentioned (garbage content) but I don't blame the algorithm as much as I blame the audience. The algorithm, whether on TikTok or RUclips, is a reflection of what users demand. If people demand attention grabbing clickbait with no substance and click on that garbage at higher rates, then that's what the algorithm will push out. If people start clicking on actually useful and informative content, then the algorithm will adapt and start pushing that out instead. It makes sense from a business perspective and ensures that people are automatically served what they want even as trends and interests change. The unfortunate reality is that most people don't want to watch the innovative creators who genuinely care about the industry and want to see the sport improve. They just want some mindless entertainment that's somewhat related to the topic/hobby of interest. The worthwhile creators will always be niche for this reason (at least in my opinion).
Definitely way more open talk of PED use on TikTok than we saw in 2010s era RUclips. It used to be something people speculated about, now everyone and their daughter is on "TRT"
As someone who works on the corporate side of fitness, its a completely different landscape. One big that I dont see talked about too much was the blade that cut through most of the companies and being forced to adapt to these new fads or ways of things during covid. In the first 3 months of quarantine if I remeber correctly it was about 75% of brick and mortar locations were shutdown, or sold off. Not just closed for a bit I mean gone. People may still see the names, but for example Gold's was gutted and sold off in mass for franchises. They had a franchise structure prior , but not like this. Things in Gyms that were never a thing are now common place. Phones and Videos on the floor, people all doing things or training from short form videos, the general talk and complete acceptance of doing full stacks and just casual talks of drugs. Hearing many younger folks talk about Peds and sarms, and it's not even for competing, just aesthetics. I get fads, and what is pushed has ALWAYS been a thing, but the complete lack of foresight of what people are doing nowadays is shocking. I even had to change from a traditional gym to a health club because at least being around some old timers just doing cardio was better than having 20 people sitting on instagram or tik tok like lemmings clogging the floor, sitting on equipment, and most staff just do nothing out of fear of loosing retention. Am I happy to see vastly more into fitness yes, but I just wish it wasnt in a predatory manner as it is.
Definitely agree. There's always been cringe content (heck I remember years ago watching someone deadlift on youtube while wearing a full power rangers suit) but the format and algorithm seem to favor that content.
You really have hit the nail on the head about TikTok . The 2010s version of RUclips was a great comparison. A lot of people are hoping to hit the viral lottery and the content isn’t of substance.
@@Raggyham The fact that you would say that about him in response to someone saying he's underrated in terms of the advice he gives says a ton more about you than it does him, none of it positive.
Throwback to the rant park Omar - to your point about new people continuing the "unconventional", I feel things like that have moved away from RUclips and now exist in podcasts on other platforms. It has simply evolved to more trustworthy platforms not like TikTok.
I don't do Tik TAK or INSTANTgram, lol. Social Media has NO boundaries, the content is NONSENSE most of the time. You're right, how do "I" get the most subscribers, most views, can I become an INFLUENZA(R)? I don't have the time to F-around with what is TRENDING. Whatever it is, I do NOT CARE! Because it isn't worth my time. So I stick with the subscriptions I have here and you know. Having a GREAT LIBRARY of actual BOOKS in many fields of study is a great way to learn, boys and girls! Try it!
It's insane when you think about it. The algorithm will show you content that will keep you hooked to the platform and the incentive is to make content that has mass appeal and that is usually easy shortcut answers.
Haha good one, as far as fitness content goes your channel has been dead for a while. I know a lot of people like the lifestyle/vlogging channels but personally I think your channel was at it's best when you were still pushing mainly lifting content with a little bit of vlogging.
those calves are prolly screaming rn. anyways, you keep it real and have been for a hella long time. this video explains why i hate tiktok fitness perfectly
Long time no see. I liked the ancient workout series, but it seemed way to brief. I'm back in the gym lifting after being gone for along time. My advice is never give up, never quit, and never give in. Old age brings sagging skin, trust me I found out the hard way.
obert love having you back. Would love to see more videos talking about lifting, life, the parallels and philosophy in between. Am at a stage where I'm really strong 5-6 years in but my family and friends keep telling me to back off because of potential risk to long term health and injury. Have you/any viewers been here ? What's it like 10-15-20 years down the line ? I'm already feeling a few aches and pains at 26 but obv I can go hard but I always wonder for how long esp as a natural
Exercise should be benefitting for you the older you get. If you're feeling painful from everyday activities/workouts at 26 you might have an injury you didn't know about.
If you're getting aches and pains you may be doing too much volume, or maybe you're doing things like plyometrics too often. 26 is young, man. I'm 37 and still pushing the envelope. Just get your programming in check, followed by sleep and diet in equal parts. I've found that programming is the #1 thing that stalled my progress over the years or resulted in overuse injuries. Diet can be pretty permissive, and as long as you're not constantly sleep deprived you're probably ok there. Train hard but smart and find what works for you right now (might not work forever). If you're doing a lot of strength focused work and stalling or picking up aches and pains, maybe switch it up and do an offseason style approach, more bodybuilding work and focus on general fitness.
Your body is sending you signals every second of the day. It is your responsibility to learn to listen to them. Looking 10% crazier because you want to go at 180% of normal intensity isn't worth the potential of spending the last 30 years of your life effectively immobile without great effort and planning and completely physically miserable and sad. You can still look ridiculous without burning the candle twice as bright at both ends homie. Inverse square and all.
Naturals are LESS likely to get injured … so stay natural if you’re worried! And mike israetel and Eric helms both have spoken a lot about things to implement with aches and pains and go find a medical provider/physical therapist that you trust if you get hurt hurt
Well done bro! I like the message, I think the TikTokers should see this... and most of all the platform itself should consider your comment and start regulating some of that content that's harmful. We can't build success by harm
I remember watching your videos years ago the way fitness has gone downhill has made me lose a lot of my love for fitness. I know some of these influencers in real life some are terrible people irl and should not be influencing anyone.
This talk goes into how media is induced in general. It's been going on since black & white movies with 35 mins scenes in 1 room of people just talking, but has ramped up so much it's legit "grab my attention in first 1 second of scrolling, and keep me hooked every single second with fast pace or I'm not watching."
Dont comment much but just wanna say I love your content Omar. Its always good vibes and it brightens up my day. Wish you continued well being and good health
Tiktok seems to be full of people doing it to validate themselves doing copy & paste videos for a few likes rather than to actually trying to provide people with informative content 🤷🏻♀️ plus it seems like a lot of them don’t seem to have much of an idea what they’re doing anyway, hip thrusts one rep maxes when the goal is hypertrophy & glute growth 😬
As someone who posts weekly to Tik Tok / Instagram without using any trends, popular audios, or anything except what I want to post… the algorithm definitely does NOT reward me for it haha. But I would quickly lose passion just copying others/ mouthing words to audio, so I’ve grown to stop caring about performance and just keep posting.

This is so real I don’t watch nearly as much RUclips lifting stuff on my time off it’s really getting repetitive for some channels !
Man i remember watching your channel back in 2012. Holy shit time flies
Omar! You forgot to mention Mark Rippetoe and Starting strength in your list of revolutionary RUclipsrs!
The worthwhile creators will always be niche for this reason (at least in my opinion).
sad but true
Great to see Omar back great video
You should shoot the background sans Omar then rear-project it in the studio while Omar walks endlessly on a treadmill.
Lmaooo that little Jesse west and liver king jab 😂😂😂 tell me why I was thinking of Jesse as one of those cringe accounts too 😂🤣🤣🤣
not downloading and completely ignoring it works surprisingly well for me 🤷🏻
Omar said he would read this.
I’ve been learning from you since Chef Buff.
Good to see you back, King.
aaand STILL!
Glad to see your return! Your early content has helped me learn how to structure my workout programs when I first started lifting.
Definitely way more open talk of PED use on TikTok than we saw in 2010s era RUclips. It used to be something people speculated about, now everyone and their daughter is on "TRT"
Can’t front bro it’s pathetic at this point
Omar Isuf is clearly the only adult in the room.
TikTok is cancer.
Hey Patrick
I have cancer
We all have it
lets see Paul allen's opinion
@@damnman5113 Who?
Definitely agree. There's always been cringe content (heck I remember years ago watching someone deadlift on youtube while wearing a full power rangers suit) but the format and algorithm seem to favor that content.
You really have hit the nail on the head about TikTok . The 2010s version of RUclips was a great comparison. A lot of people are hoping to hit the viral lottery and the content isn’t of substance.
Should I eat my vegetables?
Just got sports science bachelor's looking up to Dr Mike and Dr Eric helms. Excited to contribute
Justin Lee is extremely under rated.
Fake natty on da dailyyyyy
@@Raggyham The fact that you would say that about him in response to someone saying he's underrated in terms of the advice he gives says a ton more about you than it does him, none of it positive.
Omar love the content! 👍 great insight.
Also low-key I miss Brady Brosef. Was curious if you’ve seen him around?
Throwback to the rant park Omar - to your point about new people continuing the "unconventional", I feel things like that have moved away from RUclips and now exist in podcasts on other platforms. It has simply evolved to more trustworthy platforms not like TikTok.
I see then plan laid out in a previous Iron Culture episode finally rolling out.
I am here for it sir ❤
I don't do Tik TAK or INSTANTgram, lol. Social Media has NO boundaries, the content is NONSENSE most of the time. You're right, how do "I" get the most subscribers, most views, can I become an INFLUENZA(R)?
I don't have the time to F-around with what is TRENDING. Whatever it is, I do NOT CARE! Because it isn't worth my time. So I stick with the subscriptions I have here and you know. Having a GREAT LIBRARY of actual BOOKS in many fields of study is a great way to learn, boys and girls! Try it!
Yelling at the clouds is good for thoracic extension. Looking up is good for physical and mental mobility. Jus' sayin...
It's insane when you think about it. The algorithm will show you content that will keep you hooked to the platform and the incentive is to make content that has mass appeal and that is usually easy shortcut answers.
So glad to see you back on the platform!
Hey why didn’t you include me in the “still makes amazing & informative content” group?
Haha good one, as far as fitness content goes your channel has been dead for a while. I know a lot of people like the lifestyle/vlogging channels but personally I think your channel was at it's best when you were still pushing mainly lifting content with a little bit of vlogging.
61 year old guy here, when l go outside and yell at clouds somebody keeps calling the cops
Love ya Omar, always stoked to see a new vid!
those calves are prolly screaming rn. anyways, you keep it real and have been for a hella long time. this video explains why i hate tiktok fitness perfectly
Long time no see. I liked the ancient workout series, but it seemed way to brief. I'm back in the gym lifting after being gone for along time. My advice is never give up, never quit, and never give in. Old age brings sagging skin, trust me I found out the hard way.
Quantity$ vs qualitys :/
obert love having you back. I'm already feeling a few aches and pains at 26 but obv I can go hard but I always wonder for how long esp as a natural
lol ignore them
Exercise should be benefitting for you the older you get.
Great vid. Glad you’re back!
I think the problem is no one has cosplayed as the green power ranger in awhile.
Bro do you think years after Tik Tok people are going to spend 16 minutes to watch this video ?
I remember watching your videos years ago the way fitness has gone downhill has made me lose a lot of my love for fitness. I know some of these influencers in real life some are terrible people irl and should not be influencing anyone.
Mans werent there when Scooby was using a skateboard to squat
This talk goes into how media is induced in general. It's been going on since black & white movies with 35 mins scenes in 1 room of people just talking, but has ramped up so much it's legit "grab my attention in first 1 second of scrolling, and keep me hooked every single second with fast pace or I'm not watching."
I think Matt Vena is the best guy who's utilized short form content to put out good information recently
Love the industrial waterfront backdrop.😂 Definitely don't swim in that water... or is that the source of your strength 🤔
scooby taught me to be passionate about body building, small hats, gnomes, and airplane repair.
Dont comment much but just wanna say I love your content Omar. Its always good vibes and it brightens up my day. Wish you continued well being and good health
Thank you for the comeback. Always the best content. 👌
Camara man walking backwards for over 15 minutes. Respect
Kneesovertoesguy is my favorite "new" content creator.
Tiktok seems to be full of people doing it to validate themselves doing copy & paste videos for a few likes rather than to actually trying to provide people with informative content 🤷🏻♀️ plus it seems like a lot of them don’t seem to have much of an idea what they’re doing anyway, hip thrusts one rep maxes when the goal is hypertrophy & glute growth 😬
damn omar, haven't since you since 2012's looking great brother
Hey omar you are one of my most favorite RUclipsr. Thanks for all really. But will you soon include calves training?
As someone who posts weekly to Tik Tok / Instagram without using any trends, popular audios, or anything except what I want to post… the algorithm definitely does NOT reward me for it haha. But I would quickly lose passion just copying others/ mouthing words to audio, so I’ve grown to stop caring about performance and just keep posting.
You’re one of the OGs my man!
I met you at the Olympia in 2016 and I still watch your videos bro 😎
"how can i train with liver king" LMAO. so glad you said that
@13:20 this is facts for 95% of people in fitness and 85% of people world wide. Validation seeking is pathetic and weak. Dont fall for the trap people
Still wearing the "I think therefore I lift" tshirt regularly💪
9:38 The next super passionate strongman competitor that also wants to talk general strength == Alexander Bromley
Bald Omni Man is our new candito type dude. Plus he's jacked!
Took me 0:27 secs in to realize that metal pole in background isn't a seals head 🦭lol
TLDW: old man yelling at the clouds
Man, you summed it up great when you said the algorithms reward conformity. It's not just the fitness niche, it's the same story with everything.
This man is truly one of the OG’s, and there’s a damn good reason people still tune in and listen to him
I somewhat disagree, cause I think the noble natty movement Is the new wave, channels like NH ,GVS, bald Omni man, basement bodybuilding, alpghadestiny and many more. They preach great advice
Yea on RUclips but on tik tok and Instagram it's nowhere to be found. Especially young people they are going to tik tok and instagram before the ever want to watch a long RUclips video.
“Fast Food Fitness” as I call it, is very popular right now, it’s a shame, because you leave it learning absolutely nothing, and yet people consume it because it serves as a proxy for actually applying practical methods and getting jacked.
Never heard of “fast food fitness” but omg how fast backwards are we going?
Hey uncle omar it's nice to see ya back
