Miyamoto Musashi, discussed in this video, became a legend in swordsmanship during his lifetime - 1584 -1645. At nearly the same time (their lifetimes overlapped by 44 years) there lived an equally legendary swordsman at the other end of the great Eurasian landmass. He dwelt in France from 1611-1673 and was a captain in the Mousquetaires du Roi; his name was Charles de Batz de Castelmore. You know him as le Compte D'Artagnan.

The first Gurkha trained as paratroopers were told by their British trainers that they would be jumping from airplanes at 850 feet. They seemed dismayed at this and requested through their translator that this altitude be reduced to 500 feet. "Ridiculous", said the British trainer, there would be no time for your parachute to open. When this was translated to them, they seemed much relieved and their response was translated back. "Ah, parachutes! Yes sir, very good."

Well maybe it's ike the Seals if you put on a graph each recruit from worst physical and mental performance to the best you would see that rarely anybody in the top 20% make it. Bc they aren't looking for the greatest athletes. If they were they would just go to an ironman or CrossFit gym. They are looking for a cog in a unit. It's more about being able to mentally adapt, process, and endure.
So maybe that's what happened with your Sherpas. They possibly could have been the biggest badasses there and still ended up on your soccer field.

In my country Malawi (Africa) There is a famous story of a man named Mtingwi (pronunciation: mtee-ngweee)
During raids and arrival of the whites some survivors on the coasts escaped inland deep into Africa. He was known to be a large man that helped save his people. Among him and a few warriors they were able to take down soldiers while raiding the villages that they passed and when they reached malawi he fought off the Ngoni tribe. Besting over 10 armed men in combat while he was not armed himself. Apparently one night a king from a distant village had his soldiers guide a lion to his hat so it could kill him. But the next day he came to the kings land holding the lions head. Asking him to Try again.
The reason why the king had attempted this was because mtingwi had killed his son in combat. Who was actually considered larger in size than Mtingwi.
Apparently he always refused to rule. When asked to do so. Claimed that ruling people required a different form of strength. He just preferred fighting
To help clarify: Malawi is a landlocked country deep in Africa. And it was formed due to the arrival of many survivors that escaped the coasts. Through out its early beginnings it was a battle zone among different tribes all fighting to claim the land.
It's a small country with over 20 different tribes spread out across it due to this reason.

Napoleon and later Eisenhower both said words similar to "I would rather a lucky general than a good general" with Eisenhower going on to say " they win battles". Great tactics, strategies, overwhelming strength and battle plans can all be undone by mother nature and luck.
Mustafa Kemal's determination and command and his personal rallying of the retreating Turkish troops at Gallipoli won the day for the Turks and he would go on to become Turkey's greatest modern leader. Yet luck played a part, a bullet or piece of shrapnel was stopped by his pocket watch in his left chest pocket preventing perhaps his death but certainly preventing him being incapacitated and thus able to personally rally the troops.

He is believed to have killed over 500 men during the 1939-40 Winter War, the highest number of sniper kills in any major war. He used a Finnish-produced M/28-30 rifle, a variant of the Mosin-Nagant rifle, and a Suomi KP/-31 submachine gun. His unit's captain Antti Rantamaa credited him with 259 confirmed kills by sniper rifle and an equal number of kills by submachine gun during the Winter War. Later in his book, Rantamaa credited Häyhä with 542 sniper kills. Häyhä never talked about it publicly but estimated in his private war-time diary that he shot around 500.

Even Chris Kyle and Carlos Hathcock said they were only put in the position, it's the only reason why they had so many confirmed kill. Not to say these guys aren't good, but it's the British just creating mythical stories during war time. They're known for it with their SAS, MI-5 and 6, WWII airplanes, etc. They went on and on that the Spitfire was the best WWII plane when the Mustang and BF109 were clearly more superior. I'm really disappointed with your lack of research on this Thoughty. Gladiator matches were rarely ever fought to the death and the majority of casualties were in fact purely accidental. Gladiators had to be trained, clothed, equipped, fed, and housed which made them an expensive investment. No one would be willing to put the effort and money into sponsoring gladiators if half of them would die at the end of every day.

Also just like WWE many times the most popular gladiator what is vaulted and promoted to become the champion because as you said fights to the death were extremely rare. It was real fighting many times but it was also partially fake wrestling. Most times they would bring in gladiators from other cities to lose and then those same gladiators we travel to their cities where they would lose so both gladiator schools gained honor in their areas.
When you see the stories about these gladiators who had hundreds of victories you have to think that tons of them were staged, especially once they became famous. And half the stories you read these incredibly famous ones were already fighting for 20+ years and still whipping on the 25-year-olds who are much more athletic and in their prime.
We love to romanticize the gladiators, but I truly believe they were 50% UFC fighter 50% WWE star. They were primarily to keep the public off of the politicians and the upper class and most the killing we have associated with them is simply executing prisoners. As you said they were ridiculously expensive and because a lot of the fights were fake they could keep doing it for 20 years so if you were to pay for a fight to the death you would have to pay exorbitant amounts of money.

Well since I haven't seen anyone commenting on it I'm gonna be the one to say that Princess Khutulun is underrated and soooooo badass. My favourite summary of her life is just "She said anyone who beat her could marry her, and anyone who couldn't owed her 100 horses. She died unmarried, in possession of 10,000 horses".
The most impressive part is that it's not even like her opponents weren't trying, horses were held in especially high regard during Mongolia's reign and the bond between a warrior and their horse was considered borderline sacred. To rip 1 horse from a man's hands would be much, but to ask for 100 was insane. Every single man that challenged her would have went in completely expecting to win and absolutely ready do they everything they could to make sure that happened, and yet despite all that Khutulun still manages to hold a record greater than any athlete that has existed to this day.
Musashi, Flamma, and the others were all great let's not get that twisted. But Khutulun as far as I know has the greatest win : loss ratio of anyone that has existed, and that is simply incredible. Let's please put some respect on that name

I disagree, and i'd like to point out some major errors here, first one being that leonidas never had 300 men, i serioisly don't know where they got that number from, but sadly it looks like people don't bother reading and actually researching history, because leonidas had no less than 7000 men, and they were (obvioisly) defeated by the persians
In my opinion the greatest, most disciplined warriors in history were Khalid ibn al waleed (aka The Sword Of God) and his army of brave, fearless warriors and mujahideen.
Khalid marched out with his army of brave and mighty warriors, and faced the two greatest empires of his time, he did what the romans could never do, he conquered persia and crippled the mighty romans, he was such a great commander, and his fearless army was so great that even when the Romans and the persians decided to unite and team up against him at the battle of Firaz, where he was heavily outnumbered, and his army was disadvantaged because they didn't have heavy armor that protected their entire bodies, all the odds were against him, and he marched out towards them with 15k mujahideen while the romans and persians had 300k
The odds were all against him, and unlike leonidas, The Sword Of God won.
The roman and persian armies lost 100k men to Khalid's 15k warriors, while The Sword Of God's army only suffered 200 casualties.
Now that, is what i call Greatness and Discipline
