I understand what you're talking about... I've lived with this for over twenty years. It hurts more at times, I do miss my normal face, not pleasant aging with it... You are beautiful, keep trying. Take care!

I had bells palsy in my left side of face since feb.of 2021 during my 3rd trimester pregnancy. I didn't receive steriod medication because of that.. went to physiotherapy in 2 hospitals here in the Philippines, they did electric stimulation, biofeedback, facial exercises and massage, but only soft massage without pressure, they said they do not want to overwork the muscle. I've been diagnosed with synkinesis. They said there is no cure and the therapy will not work anymore. I still can't lift my left forehead, my eyes closes whenever i smile, i have teary eye especially when i eat, i didn't regain my full smile, sometimes i feel my eye is twitching. The neurologist also did not recommend botox for me. I also tried accupuncture but my budget won't allow me to continue anymore. Your insights and massage or stretching techniques are new to me so definitely will try it. Thank you for the new knowledge.

This was very good info. Funny thing, I have all the symptoms with synkinesis. Eye closes when I eat. My mouth pretty much controls my eye. I still can't smile on my affected side. Nor do I have eyebrow movement. I'm going to try all these muscle stretches.
I feel I wasted almost a year of PT, Acupuncture and EStem time with people who were uneducated and/or guessing.
I hope I can get at least 90% of my smile back.

Many thanks and blessings for educating and helping people who suffered from Bells Palsy. I feel like I lived under a rock, until recently...lol. God bless you! I had Bells Palsy in 2000 on the right side, one week after having a C-section, and I went to the doctor and they advised to take steroids for quick healing, but having a new born I choose to breastfeed and gave up the steroids. I blamed the ice chips I chewed after the surgery, but today I found out in another video that it could've happen from the surgery, from intubation, how they set that mask in my face and damaged the nerve. Now it's besides the point. But it could be a combination of all factors, incuding stress, lack of sleep, working full time up to the last minute. Later, maybe in 2008 or 2009, I went for blepharoplasty surgery, because of droopy eyelids. Right side is still not fully recovered. Now I found the videos about exercises and face massage. Do you think at this stage in my recovery and after the eyelid surgery, I might get the muscles worked, and see improvements? Thank you again!

    • @ButheauPhysiotherapy
      @ButheauPhysiotherapy  Год назад

I can't answer this question with any certainty. I do not have your full medical history, surgery report, have not assessed your current condition. So without having all the details, I can only answer by yes and no. If you do not have any movement in a particular muscles and there is no nerve activity there, you will not get nerve activity since it has been since 2000.

Hi, thank you for wonderful informative videos. I have Bells Pulsy and am on week 19. No movement yet. My eye started closing and is not so dry any longer. My involved side feels like it gets warm every so often. I have discovered that it feels like my muscles are moving ever so slight, but the actual movement is not visible. Is this normal.

Thank you, this is very helpful. I contracted BP on 24 May. I was prescribed PT and advised to start ASAP. I'm in France. It was hard finding a PT who was specialised in facial paralysis but I found one. Or I thought I had. In the first few sessions she taught me some exercises and massages. After that, each session consisted in me showing her a few exercises, then after about 10-15 minutes, the session would end. I made no progress with her at all and stopped going. I also read that exercises should not be started before paresis, whereas I had not been told that. In any event, in the first 2 months of PT, my face remained a block of concrete.
In August I started having some slight movement in the affected side (right side for me). I am now exactly in the stage of sinekinesis mentioned here I the video (eye closing makes my cheek scrunch up). Although my eyelid has more movement than before, my forehead remains completely stiff. I cannot frown or raise my right eyebrow.
My lips on the right are flaccid, and will not close tightly (air still escapes when I try to puff my cheeks). I cannot whistle. My affected cheek feels thick and lumpy. I can also feel a thickness and tension going down the right side of my jaw into the neck.
When attempting a smile, I hear a single vibration-like sound in the right ear. The ear generally feels "full."
An MRI scan showed nothing abnormal. I'm now waiting for an EMG in November.
This is such a frustrating thing to have. Doctors just have no idea. I had to beg for an MRI and the EMG was my suggestion too.
    Thanks again.

Sandra, sorry to read you are going through all this. Sadly, your story is not rare amongst people struggling with facial paralysis.
Where are you located in France? I might have some name to give you.
"exercises should not be started before paresis," Unless you call stretching and massage exercises. These should be started right away. Not until the paresis stage you want to practice movement. And that has be performed most often with guidance from a facial therapist as most people exaggerate way to much and need cueing to perform in a slow, controlled manner.

    Hello Pierre,
Haalo again, today is day 4 of my Bell's Palsy and seems like mine is Lower Motor Neuron affected, most likely at the level of Stylo-Mastoid foramen and beyond. So, today, as I am waiting in my truck at school, I felt current flowing thru my RT cheek muscles and it came from behind the RT ear and came down to the mid-level of cheek and it went up and did that running around at least 8-10 times and it stopped. I have been doing exercises since Tuesday morning and today is Wednesday afternoon. My Acyclovir and Prednisone is round the clock. Heat, massage, exercises of various cheek-groups...all of that. But to feel that random current flow in my cheek muscle, is phenomenal to me. What would you consider this?

It would be extremely hard to treat your synkinesis only from the video I am publishing. Each case is different , each presentation is different and you need to find out what exactly you need to work on... Which muscles is hyperactive, creates the unwanted motion and need to be stretched and calmed down to prevent interfering with the antagonist muscle that creates the wanted motion. SO stretching and the neuromuscular muscular reeducation with slow, controlled movement to target only the wanted movement.

You developed BP as a complication from meds after surgery? A total knee replacement is not related to facial paralysis. BP always happen has a perfect storm of several factor... Most of the time, Fatigue/ stress/ illness , which all lead to a less robust immune system, which then allows a virus to attack the nerve.

You certainly need to stretch the non involved side. It is tight and overactive and pulling your mouth to that side.
As far as an exercise specialist, you are talking to one… and facial therapy is actually not about “exercise”… facial muscles need movement , flexibility and control… not so much to produce strength.

Botox is one thing to help decrease synkinesis but it is not the cure. Targeted stretching and neuromuscular reeducation is what you most likely need. It sounds like you need to stretch around your eyes and likely need to stretch some key areas in your cheeks.
