Also born, bred and raised in Seattle...also 1955. Yes the homeless situation is quite a mess and the way the police have been prevented from doing anything meaningful about it. After living 27 years in the Yakima Valley, I returned to Seattle in 2008. I can't afford to live in Seattle. We now live in Bremerton. Same short summer and long gloomy winter, but the rent is a bit more affordable...a bit.

My husband and I moved to Seattle---TWICE. The first time, we were newlyweds---1981---it was INCREDIBLE, fantastically beautiful and reasonable rents. Lived in the Queen Anne neighborhood, God it was gorgeous. Moved away in 1983 (work related) but moved back in 1989----this time we had two small children. Already we detected major growth changes starting to drive all the prices up. But, both times we had the monthly bus passes and the public bus system there was amazingly good. I'm serious---we did not need a car except for grocery store trips and such. I loved Seattle then---but we moved away in 1991 and didn't look back. Life moves on and such. It's very nice that folks keep chickens in the city of Seattle. Fresh eggs ARE nice. If you've never had freshly laid eggs, you don't know what you're missing. I live in northern Arkansas in a small town that folds up the sidewalks around 7 PM. I did have chickens in the backyard, but I considered my neighbors and did not have a rooster. Hens eat scraps and bugs and leftover cat food (from my picky Persian). I think of them as mini-velociraptors.

    Anecdotal report (30-year native):
2014: Housing skyrocketed after Amazon headquartered in Seattle. Someone who just moved from NYC (2021) told me he thinks cost of living is significantly worse in Seattle than NYC.
2015: Traffic went from "bad" to "terrible."
2016: Trump Derangement Syndrome pandemic hits... work was more like "therapy" for people in Seattle to espouse their grievances. It's the dominant ethos.
2020: People took to the COVID lockdowns fairly seriously and earnestly. We're doing pretty good by the numbers, it would appear as a result.
2020: Traffic goes from bad to mild! A silver-lining to the Coronavirus pandemic. And with widespread adoption of "work from home," promoted by tech companies like Microsoft, a significant amount of commuter traffic may be alleviated in the future. People I know who do it, love it. We'll see if that ends up helping the traffic situation. It certainly wouldn't help the introvert problem.
Economy: There's lots of money in Seattle if you break into the tech industry. That is clearly the benefit of computer-based industries: Revenue goes through the roof because the computers do all the work and there's relatively little cost to scaling up. Also lots of money in typical corporate stuff here if you aspire to senior leadership or fit into their supporting structures, accounting, finance, or data stuff like BI. Starbucks is here, Bartell's is here, etc, etc. Otherwise, the people who play it straight in the more operational/manufacturing industries seem to congregate in the South around Kent and Tacoma, WA (Costco, Boeing, Amazon Fulfilment). There are some quiet, badass vets who live to the North.
Environment: Overcast. People talk about the rain, but I eventually realized it's the overcast clouds that really kills you. Constant clouds. No sun. No stars at night. However, temps are extremely mild, no bugs or snakes. So the environment here is about as "soft" as you can get. Similarly, the culture is also like this, for better or for worse. Trait "agreeable" people, thus it's a very polite, nonconfrontational place.
Culture: There are, or were previously plenty of artists around. Most of the artistically inclined people I know have since gotten too caught up with politics to be contributing anything creative to "the scene". The radio station KEXP seems to be an example of this decline. The nihilists and heroin users who previously created Grunge probably can't afford anything anymore and are now just normal bums, because there is no music. However, I've met some pretty cool people involved in gaming stuff this decade. Tons of studios here. VR was heating up in 2017 but I don't know if that's still a thing anymore. Digipen is a gaming college that seems to pull in some far-flung creative nerds. That would probably make a great entry point if you can figure out a plan for money ;)

Totally accurate and fair account of Seattle Briggs. I love Seattle and I live here, but it has its issues like any big city. Since COVID some of these things have gotten even worse, like other places. It’s becoming a city for singles, families are being pushed out by housing practices (density) and a lot of mediocre schools. We’re lucky to be in a good one with our son, but once he graduates, we’ll likely leave due to affordability, mostly very high property taxes. It’s a great place if you’re single and make a lot of money.

I was born in Seattle and raised in the area. But like most natives I left the area Here are a few differences I have.
First, summer begins before August 1. Summer weather traditionally began about July 12, now maybe July 1. What is new weather-wise is that smoke season begins August 1, and it runs until it rains. It’s so bad, it’s unsafe.
Also regarding weather, it gets hotter than LA there. Yes - Seattle has a higher high than LA. That is exacerbated by the fact that few people have air conditioners there - it’s like a tradition.
And the rain - it’s a misty-like rain. When this happens, which is during much of the year, it seems colder than Alaska.
Traffic has gotten ever worse - at least before I left in 2017. There won’t be a viable mass-transit system until the 2030s. This is due to a thing called “The Seattle Consensus,” which means that infrastructure projects drag on for decades - they take the length of a career to be viable. If WFM takes off, it will get better, but that looks like it’s pulling back somewhat. I saw traffic get ever so worse from 1988 - when regular traffic jams first started popping up there - until 2017, when it took two hours to get to work each way (whereas it took a little over half that in 2003).

Summer - usually starts by July. It's Seattle, no weather is guaranteed at any given time. Not even August.
Cruise Season - the majority of people in Seattle aren't impacted... as they avoid downtown like, well.. I'd say a plague but we've seen that people don't avoid plagues.
Traffic - growing up around there, I would tell people coming to the region that traffic was bad. They would say I'm from X, Y, Z... and I would laugh at them. Seattle spent 20 years in the top 10 worst traffic and breaking the top 5 wasn't unusual. I used to work in Kirkland and it would take me up to 2 hours to get home to North Seattle. That was no where near as bad as when I lived in Everett and worked near Factoria Square.

When the Denny Party arrived on Friday the 13th, 1851, the settled in West Seattle and called it New York Alki, which is a Duwamish word meaning, "Some day". They indeed wanted to be the New York of the West.
But conditions turned out to be less than optimal, so they moved to what is now Pioneer Square on April Fool's Day, 1852.
There is a six foot statue of Liberty at Alki Beach to commemorate the landing of the Denny Party.

Hey Briggs, do you think you could do a Top 10 Reasons to Move to Minnesota? I know it's a state you like, and you and I both know that it's gotten a very bad rep lately due to the rioters. Any chance you could do a positive video on it to remind people that it's so much more than just the twin cities?
