Vauxhall Astra GSe review - The return of the hot Vauxhall? (Opel Astra GSe)

- GSe, or Grand Sport Electric, is a brand new sub-division that'll focus on producing electrified performance models. Enthusiasts will know all too well that Vauxhall has form when it comes to spicier models, with its Lotus-developed Carlton super saloon of the 1990s, and latterly GSi and hardcore VXR models.
New it may sound, the GSe badge has been seen before though if you're familiar with Vauxhall's sister firm Opel. It denoted a sportier version of the Opel Monza in the mid-1980s, and was used more recently on the Opel Manta GSe ElektroMOD - a stunning 'restomod' that reimagined the classic 1970s Manta into a modern-day electric car.
The GSe badge is also being launched on the Astra Sports Tourer estate and the Grandland SUV - a four-wheel drive, twin-motor PHEV packing 300bhp. All three GSe models receive tweaked exterior styling and chassis and suspension changes for a more sporting drive.
The Astra GSe hatchback is arguably the most intriguing as Vauxhall claims it has some of the panache of GSi and VXR Astra hot hatchbacks of yore, but with a new focus on zero emissions driving that comes from plug-in hybrid power.
I travel to Spain to drive the new Astra GSe to see if it's a return to great hot Vauxhalls of the past.

Boy racers and track days are over then!
£40k pointless and the interior isn’t a £40k car.
How did we end up with 'everyman' cars like the Astra costing £40k?
European policy (CO2 emission quotas).
Its insane, I bought an 18 plate astra with all optional extras with 3500 miles on the clock for 13.5k. I bought my Vivaro 3 months before lockdown, 35k on the clock for just under 12k.
Id hate to be needing to buy a vehicle in this current market, the prices are disgusting.
Shame Vauxhall can't build these at an acceptable rate. I put an order in for one in June last year, they said it will be here in March. Got a phone call the other week "Too speed up production, the roof will be painted the same colour as the rest of the car rather than be black." and they added "It still won't be built anytime soon". So i cancelled it.
Depreciation will be horrific
Good review aways
My Mokka is 25 k and that 40 k is a bit of a steep price jump considering its the same inside and out may as well of brought out a mokka hybrid for 30 k to attract more sales 40 k is a put off when u can get a audi or golf r for similar price.even a sporty lexus around that range.
Batch Batch Batch, how art tho.
RE: Hot Astra MK8
Loved in c. 6 months ago press releases
North of 40k for a GTe , to me it hasn't got a place on the market, has it. !!!??? Maybe lower trim levels?
40k is GTi/Golf R/Others
It’s priced comparably to other PHEV hatches like Golf GTE and Leon Cupra E-hybrid. Good for company car drivers but not a GTI rival sadly
@@batchreviews Sorry Batch, you're right, good for BIK and company car drivers, less so enthusiastic driving owner/s who maybe not under a company scheme or similar
Irmscher and 400, i remember me something.
And they got rid of the VXR Badge and history …… for this ?
WOW, this looks like something your grandma would like to have a race up to the speed limit of 20mph - hot hatch??? where?? they made them so wide and so long they look like old family cars, not like the nimble, fast old hot hatch cars.
It is just a Opel Astra .Vauxhall and Opel ? I would prefer an Opel. !Vauxhall has always had a poor reputation through the years .I have worked at a Vauxhall dealer in the seventies where strikes hit and destroyed English brands and Japanese brands like Mazda began to appear!
