  • Vehicle Maintenance 101...With Piggy !
    In this episode of this back to basics help series...
    How to adjust the rear brakes/handbrake on a vehicle with drums at the rear. This is demonstrated on a Peugeot 206, almost identical systems on the 106, 306, 406, citroen saxo, xsara etc... but the principles apply to 99% of drum/shoe based handbrakes.

      You are very welcome - I have done articles on car and motorcycle topics - so have an idea of the work involved - so really appreciate the hours you put in.
      18 months ago myself and a few mates had a bet - buy very cheap cars and see how long they would last - I paid £100 for an orange 206 HDI 2.0 3dr. It has GTi wheels/interior, is lowered and seems nippier than the original 90hp so suspect it may have been tweaked but looks standard under the bonnet. All of the others cars involved in the bet have expired! I have become quite taken with the 206 as it reminds me of the fun I had with hot hatches in my teenage motoring years and your excellent video’s are proving very helpful in keeping it running. It goes and stops well and I would like to see what can be done to improve its handling - especially any tweaks to setup/geometry as it is most fun on empty B roads and a bit more steering feel/bite would be welcome. Best regards Paul.

      PaulGander sounds fun. I do enjoy down the lanes how nimble my wife's 206 is. Very tail happy too. Gti140/180 suspension stock is a great upgrade.. front ARB makes a nice improvement on turn in. Although, I found the best thing was good rubber. I fitted some ps4s on this spring. Transforms the car. 🐷👍

    Very good advice. My 206 is due its mot in a few weeks. I've adjusted the handbrake using the adjuster as most people do. After watching this I'll be doing it properly. Hope you do more videos like this.

    Hi, I have my rear disc and pads to change on my 306 hdi, am I right in thinking the handbrake adjuster at the handbrake is all I need to adjust when replacing these parts? Came to this video from the 206 brake replacement.
    Thanks

    • @PiggyPower
      @PiggyPower  4 года назад +3

      Yes, but ensure you leave the handbrake adjuster well alone until you've pumped the brakes up and some a test drive/first bedding in. Then take slack out of the cable if the brakes feel ok. 👍

      well...if its got feathers and quacks...its probably a duck....so if you've broken a sensor and the ABS light is on... you've probably got a broken ABS sensor! The sinking pedal...see my other reply! :)

    On a different note, I have two 306 2.0 XSi in my driveway; one SORN Phase 3 and one road legal running Phase 2. Is it possible to use the almost brand new full exhaust system on my Ph3, and swap it over to the Ph2 car? The Ph3 has been stood since November 2016 and not moved an inch or had the engine started. The money in wasted petrol with the bad exhaust on the Ph2, would easily have bought a brand new full system, so I am keen to not waste any more money! I currently only get 200 miles on a full tank, and would normally get double that with a decent exhaust fitted. Someone on a Peugeot / Citroeon forum said that I would need to check first, as he says 106 models for example have many variations of exhaust design.

    • @PiggyPower
      @PiggyPower  6 лет назад +1

      EgoShredder from the tunnel back, all hatchback 306s have the same exhaust design. It's the manifold, diameter and downpipes that differ. 👍🐷

    • @PiggyPower
      @PiggyPower  6 лет назад

      EgoShredder (I would also suggest that unless your old exhaust is blocked beyond measure, there maybe something else wrong to cause such bad mpg/

    • @EgoShredder
      @EgoShredder 6 лет назад

      Cool thanks for that. Both my 306 are 2.0 XSi models from the year 2000 and 1999 respectively. The old exhaust had a massive crack in the pipe where it joined to the CAT when I bought it. I took it for a new exhaust system fitting, but when I came back to pay they had welded up the old one to "save me money". I was really angry because it has wasted me time and money, just because they did not bother to locate a new exhaust for me.
      The old one is now making a similar loud sound to what it did before the bodge weld job, and is also rattling. This is my third 306 2.0 XSi car and I have become used to knowing when it needs a new exhaust (poor accleration, terrible fuel consumption etc). I've not had chance to give the car a proper full service yet, although the oil looks fine, car idles well etc. Not sure about the oil filter, as that can impact on fuel economy too in a big way from past experience.

    I'm a new subscriber, just wanted to ask, are you a big fan of that Peugeot or is that the only car you can get? Just asking because i'd like to suggest some affordable beater like an old corolla, sentra, integra, or etc, cuz theyre more relatable (im from florida, theres lots of them) i love your projects man keep it up

    • @PiggyPower
      @PiggyPower  6 лет назад

      DiscoKitten5 issue is... They are all expensive to buy and run... Compared to this Peugeot. Which costs a few £100 to buy. Has never broken down. costs £35 to do a full service. And is very minimal on fuel/tax/insurance.
      I also specialise in Peugeots and Citroen's...
      So it's good to know what you live with I guess.
      No disrespect to the Japanese market of course.
      I love them. They are just not affordable as a daily.

      DiscoKitten5 issue is... You have cheap petrol. So old motors that don't do good mileage isn't such an issue. Fuel is expensive here... At an all time high

    • @PiggyPower
      @PiggyPower  3 года назад

      Had to take the drum off for what?
      Lip needs grinding off. Evenly, to avoid balance issues. It's a service procedure that should be done once a year. 👍

    • @Starshine2007
      @Starshine2007 3 года назад

      @@PiggyPower Adjust brake shoe adjuster. putting it back when drum has a groove, hence a lip makes adjustment with drum off problematic. Halfords suggested grinding it down.

    • @PiggyPower
      @PiggyPower  3 года назад

      It's what professionals would do, just do it gently and evenly.
      You can measure the drum and check it isn't just fully worn out. If the lip is huge...probably needs a new drum.

    If the centre trim adjuster is really loose could you just tighten it to do a lazy fix on the handbrake?

    • @PiggyPower
      @PiggyPower  3 года назад +1

      That would adjust the cable slack, but wouldnt really do the brakes any good.
      These are your brakes don't forget .. not just a go faster stripe on the bonnet .. they have a rather big effect on you staying safe on the road.
      Don't mess with the brakes!

    • @jedimanultra

      @@PiggyPower ok thanks, one more question when you loosen the adjuster at the handbrake Center trim area do you have the handbrake down?
      Also when you tighten it back up after tightening at the drums is the hand brake down or up?
      Thanks :)

    • @PiggyPower
      @PiggyPower  3 года назад +1
