  • I have chosen this classic fancy French pattern, not only for it's exquisite proportions and artistry, but also for how many techniques there are to be learned in one single pattern: Tippet tailing, double hackle tip wings, spent & dun, floss body, palmered hackle, collar hackle & finally a partridge fore hackle. All resulting in an extremely handsome dry fly.

I was introduced to fly fishing and fly tying by my Maternal Grandfather, he was born and Raised in the Sawtooth Valley of Montana and Wyoming and started himself fly tying and fishing after WW2 as a way to escape the nightmares he had....funny thing is after a few months of returning to the River to fish the river and mountains had healed him completely.
Anyway long story short sadly he passed away before he could completely teach me the things he had learned thru experience so while my fly fishing has progressed on it's own and I am what I would consider a journeyman fisherman my fly tying has been neglected in the years since my Granddad Passed. Along with my Wife and our 2 children since I inherited all my Grandfathers property and possessions we now live on the South Dakota / Wyoming Black Hills border in a log home he had built in the early 50's. My grandfather bought property all over Montana, Wyoming and Far Western South Dakota....all of it in prime Trout Fishing areas. I just turned 60 this past fall and am retired, my wife will retire at the end of 2021 so we can just travel from one piece of our property to the other all spring, summer and Fall to Fish and Hunt and hopefully enjoy some Grandkids. Our Daughter is Married now, works for US Fish and Wildlife and lives at Yellowstone our Son is just out of College and going to work for the US Forest Service and will be staying in the Black Hills Region.
Now that I have throughly bored you with a bit of background on who I am I need to tell you watching and learning from your videos has been a god send for me its it's almost like my Grandfather is still here and teaching me.
Thanks so much for the videos and please keep them coming.
Randall & Tracie Hill and Family.

"VIVE LA FRANCE" .....Thank you Barry, another great lesson in fly tying. I was really pleased with my first attempt, although I had to substitute the floss with polypropylene yarn, and the partridge fore hackle with a hen pheasant feather, (that one of my little terriers managed to pull out of the bird when it was trapped in a hedge, it flew off to live another day lol)...I hope this catches something!

    • @Thefeatherbender

Man what a complicated little fly.. looks great to! Hey Barry I was just thinking.. you might give a thought to having a video now and then of pictures of the flies you tied and the fish you caught with them and maybe do a little voice over of the story. Or maybe adding a short video of fish caught with the fly you tied.. I know right now you are all jammed up with your new book but maybe something in the future.. I know a lot of us would love to see you catching a nice fish with the beautiful work you do.. Besides it would give you an excuse to fish more!! Thanks again Barry.. you work is fascinating to watch.. Is there anything I can get for you here in the US that would be easier for me to get or cheaper to send to you? let me know..

Really nice tie Barry. I’m curious, what is the design intent of the combined spent and upright wings? I’m assuming that it has to create some sort of unique realistic profile when looking up at the fly. I’ve never seen it before so I’m guessing that other designers never found it worth the added complexity. Thanks for your thoughts.

Hi Maz, really old pattern that was extremely popular in France and Europe. I know nothing of the idea behind the double wings, if you find anything out, I'd love to know!
