I am from Wyoming. Buried wells, and wells in basements have been illegal since 1982. There are some out there. The worst public health problems that I am aware in Wyoming were all caused by buried wells and wells in basements. We had a restaurant with a well in the basement, and the casing was not even above the slab grade. A broken sewer pipe drained raw sewage directly into the well. In another case, a well was right in the middle of a chicken coop. We ended up with salmenella bacteria in the tap water.

I would have installed a Union at the wellhead for ease of disconnect in the future.
I would charge 800 plus an apple pie. Home made none of that artificial commercial apple pie filling, either. Good apples, brown sugar, nutmeg, touch of cinnamon. And love!

A little while after I inherited my house in Southeast Louisiana, I had dirt getting in my water. I got a well man to come over, and the cause of the dirt was because the well casing was below the ground like this! The man told me this use to be legal in Louisiana when my well was placed, but is no longer code to have the well casing below the ground. Ever since he raised the casing, I’ve had no problems!

Wanted to let you know, I know when someone does good work, and you do. I've been a plumber for 52 years this Sept. 2024. I started in Sept. of 72. I enjoy watching you working with wells. I work in the city so I'm not around wells very often. I'm in Alabama, what state are you in ? Keep up all the good work. It's getting hard to find a good plumber these days. I'm sure we would have a lot of crazy stories we could tell.
N.E. Oklahoma, i have a trucking company. My minimum is thousand dollars per day. If the job requires tarps extra chains or straps, wood or oversize then all of that is extra. On longhaul freight I done no less than 1500.00 per day broken down to per mile base. It cost to be in business. It cost a lot of money. But mostly its the experience you are paying for.

What keeps water in the pipe that is above the frost line and above ground from freezing
@@ronaldnaeyaert3653 Climate and water temp. I'm probably not that far away, the water comes out of the ground at 64 degrees year round. And when it freezes, it's typically short. We have no frost line.
I think a little wishing well mounted over the well would look better than the “mock rock”. Those are ugly. 😏😊

In Texas TCEQ requires 20" of well casing above a "seal" slab for public water wells. While not required for home installs it is good practice. The 7'x7' ( casing centered ) seal slab should keep rain water from pulling contaminates down well. Think dog piles in the front yard or excess fertilizer a few of the commons things found in yard that you don't want seeping down hole into your drinking water source. Nice work.

H2O, I respect how you always do it the right way....ie tapping the pvc connection with the rubber mallet, "just to make sure"!!!!
This is in Canada (Ontario) where the well extension HAS to be steel (no wimpy PVC): $3500 (about $2600 US), which seems steep, but in my case it *included* conversion from a jet pump to submersible (I picked a higher power than usual model) and new tank. Here the typical well casing is 6", but in our case it was 8", which took the drill company some time to source and cost a bit extra. The old jet lines and footvalve were removed, the 1 1/2" upline was reused for the new pump, the 1 1/4" downline was removed. A pitless adapter was used to attach from the well line to the house line, and the house-to-well 1 1/4" was used for fishing the pump cable - so we didn't have to retrench anything.
The extension pipe has to be welded to the existing pipe. There is a special non-welded sleeve fitting, but they're probably more expensive than welding, and they're very difficult to find. Can't use a Fernco-type thing - normal ground movement (we have a 4' frost line) would sheer a Fernco.
Saved a hundred bucks or so by excavating the well head myself (compact utility tractor with backhoe).
Using wirenuts makes me nervous. My crew used special buriable/water proof splices.
If we had done it a year earlier, we would have gotten a $700 rebate.
Buried wells have been illegal for some years in new installations.

I was an irrigation guy for a great many years from golf course systems to home ones. I would never use wire nuts in any damp prone location. Moisture will get in there and cause shorts. I always used what Rainbird used to call Snap-tite connectors. They seal the connection in PVC with a dielectric rubber sealant.

If I was getting a quote on that I'd be thinking 1000-1500.
Growing up on a farm North of Grove, Okla we had a 400 foot well. Every time a storm came up in the middle of the night lightening would hit the well. We had to pull the pump with block and tackle. That was a big job. Putting the new pump just far enough to touch water and check operation. Installed a 90* pipe fitting and check. Because we knew we had gas in the water, I grabbed a match and told Dad turn the power on! It shot a blue flame about ten feet out of the pipe before the water got to top of well. We knew it had a lot of sulfur in the water along with flammable gas. This gas would also come out of the kitchen sink. Strange but true. Dad tried to use it to heat his garage, but realized because it was odorless, a leak might blow the garage up. I do not know why the well was 400 feet, but we never ran out of water when everyone else would. There was an old chicken house on the farm when we bought it in mid 60's. They needed a good supply of water. Enjoy your videos.
Have you ever heard of lightening arresters it’s mounted in the switch board in case of lightning striking your well or bore casing! It protects the motor down the bore from electrical fusion of the motor windings!
@@DaveBooth-qs7sw Back in the 50's and 60's they did not know much about lightening arresters. Normally Dad would dis-connect the pump and it was safe. Sometimes he would forget.
My neighbors house had a buried well. It never had a vent pipe. I know he complained of brown water when we got lots of rain. When he sold the house, it was converted...but I think it has a pitless adapter now. I want to say it was around $650, but that was approx 7 years ago.

Your videos are very informative I am in the North East and all of our wells are steel casings.
Typical up here since they need to drill into the bedrock. The steel casing is then slammed into the start of the bedrock hole. This creates the sanitary seal and keeps overburden water from seeping in.
Most steel well casings are 8 inch here in Erie county pa and have Pitt less adapters because of the sometimes below zero temperature. I bought a place with 7 inch metal casing with a cement block in ground well house with a jet pump. Our driller came and said the 7 inch was rare and maybe used during the depression, he found 2 pieces of 7 inch in the back of his supply house and welded them together then welded them to the top of the well to bring it above ground. then made a hole for the pitiless adapter and installed a submersible pump. we removed the cement blocks but left the cement floor then filled with dirt. the well works very well and good clear cool water at 38 feet deep. The driller even found a 7 inch cap for the well. Thanks for your videos I subscribed a while back and like to watch when I have time

Nice video guys. I can tell you’re from down south. No Pitman adapter below frost line. Makes for a lot less digging. CT passed a law 15 years ago that all well heads had to be above ground when selling a house.
I don't feel bad now after seeing you pulling the well, I'm 70 and pulled my well at 130', alone. Tiger Paw 36 grit sanding disc works great for the OD clean up.

With Kristys red hot blue glue you dont need primer on the clean new pipes only the old garbage already in the ground, unless local code requires primer on everything.
Primer? Hell, I wouldn't even use pvc glue. Seems like it wouldn't be worth a darn. Pvc is used to melt two plastics together. It doesn't really work with metal. Silicon will adhere to both metal and plastic. Probably pure silicon would be my choice.

I wanna say that working on water wells is like a sacred duty for humanity .
And is one of the few places that con men have not , or cannot exploit .
What it means to bring that water up out the ground in support of human life to be , exist and grow .
I luved working on that water well crew .
But I have to say my history and nature ... was not good to stay where I could die or be maimed so easy .
I could do it now though safe ... after my back told me to .
Great work! Sure enjoy your channel. Just had a well put in here in NE Minnesota.380' of solid granite. Fracked and great water. Sure took a bit for the drillers to reach that depth. In 3 days water was 20' from the top. Pump at 340'. $$$ but I am happy!

When i had my company (im retired now) i charged $65 per manhour plus materials for simple things like that.

A mini hand mattock would come in very handy for these types of jobs' Love the vids mate! You do great work.
Couple of observation, Old pvc pipe can become brittle therefore should not be cut with ratchet cutters they can cause hairline cracks in the pipe that may cause the pipe to burst in the future. Supply pipe should have been run closer to the well casing, mostly to aid when insulating around the well for winter temps.

Here in Pennsylvania at least for my company we find the buried well which typically has no vent on it. We will dig down to where the waterline comes into the well seal then we dig the pit open large enough for a man to get in there and we will weld on a steel casing extension, drill, pit adapter, and keep everything below the frost line then we will run conduit up to where the cap is for the electrical line and connect everything above ground, if we did something like this in Pennsylvania, their waterline would freeze and burst being above ground
i own a small masonry business in east Tennessee my minimum to show up to do a repair is $700
Just south of Boston, MA a well pump and new piping, wiring and tank approximately 150’ or so $3,600+ this was done in August of 2020
It's a jolt not to see a pitless coupling but I guess you're far enough South you don't have to worry about getting below the frost line with 100% of the water pipe.

Anything that requires taking a pump out of a well is 3k in Texas
Would you not put insulation in there before winter so that pipe will not freeze what is the best insulation to use on that

Don’t think I had a vent😖although it was above ground if it’s not vented could that explain amp draw gain, low flow after a few min run time and increased sediment? Long time subscriber. Love the channel. Do you have any insight on running irrigation from home well? Should the water source be tapped before the pressure tank making the only pressure from the well pump its self or after it enters the house and utilizing the pressure tank? It depends if there are any form of problems with the system and Like the one comment before, they said you get paid for your knowledge and experience. 2.5 hrs with two professionals is very good for time! So I would say any where between 1000.00 min. To 2500.00 is definitely far. Nice job too!
In Germany you would pay the equivalent to around 400-500$ for this kind of work.
my guestimate: Labor and travel time $450 + truck, fuel, & tools $100 + materials $100 + insurance, FICA, overhead and profit $250 = TOTAL $900

today my friend payed 372.00 to repair broken wire, was there 45 min.
Rather than using a claw hammer to do small excavations like you were doing, I have found a small geologist pick to work much better.
What type of PVC glue do you think is best for indoor 1" joints? Doesn't have to be fast, but needs to be the least likely to leak.
My friends company in a higher $ area than you’re in runs 185 to show up and the first thirty minutes is included in that then it’s $45 every fifteen minutes from there. Don’t remember what it is for a second guy but with the rock and I’m sure that adaptor coupling isn’t cheap if you’re under 1k I’d say that’s honest.

$1,031.25 Parts, labor and equipment assuming it is relatively close to your shop. Labor time will vary based on drive time along with fuel and I used 55% labor overhead -8% company overhead.

I would charge at least $100 a man hour plus materials and a service call fee for driving to the location. That varies some depending on distance from the shop and if im in the area or not. Also customer attitude can affect cost.
Question that you may can help with. I have a leak under the house sitting on a concrete pad. How do I find where the bad pipe is and does the floor have to come up to repair it ?

You mentioned that the well may have been below ground to prevent freezing. Is that no longer an issue? I remember when you did a video on a pit-less adapter for a well. That's what I have here in Maine, where we can get some very cold weather (-15 deg F in January 2023). Would a pit-less adapter make sense on this well?

Labor estimate 250.00 parts 150.00... I'm just guessing on what I would probably think it would cost. In fair pricing. Not over charging the customer to keep them coming back. The 250 is travel time included.
Just had my eyes opened ro why every old hammer I see is warn down to almost nothing.........diggiing impliment.
It seems most companies in NorCal charge by the job, not hourly. They bid it high and if you don't bite, they are off to another one since they already get a basic trip charge to diagnose. My guess would be $2500 minimum, if not even way higher. Only thing I would have done different than you would to add bentonite around that steel to PVC connection...

I think $600 plus materials seems fair to me. That's $120 an hour for 2 guys at 2.5 hours each. It's hard to imagine some people saying $2500 or more is fair as that is $500 per hour. I do know there can be supply and demand factors in western states inflating prices.
Whoever did this well didn’t want it to be an easy process between tank and filters under the house rather than in a nice little shed and burying the well. Why?

Why not use a pitless adapter?
You are not really charging for the materials. Your passing that cost on to the owner. You are charging for your time, knowledge, experience, accumulated tools and work ethic.
