I've had this same occurrence with a 2008 tundra 4x4 5.7L, I also noticed a split between a underpowered battery issue and an under tightened terminal to the battery. I have also experienced the same failure with other Japanese autos. I've since learned that most if not all Japanese oems are related with each owning 25-30% of the others company. And they all use a connector similar or exactly the same battery terminal ends found on Toyotas. Whether its engineered this way for resistance or cost effectiveness, I am swapping the partial contact surface OEM connection to a more solid slide over connection to maintain a better connection for the conditions my vehicle experiences underneath the hood/bonnet area during its use locally here in Maine with our extreme environment of temps and humidity, pollen and dust and lots of bugs this time of year. One memorable example was a dragonfly, giant bee and pine beetle all being dried and part dead on the battery itself. And no I dont drive around with the hood open or off.
When I traded my 2017 Tundra in 2019 I was on my third OEM battery . And Toyota would say well you now have 7 more years warranty on the battery. The battery on my 2019 TRD PRO TUNDRA looks like the top is warping and might be from the summer heat of Arizona.
Hello Sir! If I may please ask you a question regarding the battery upgrade on this video? I carry an ARB 35L fridge on long road trips so my question is if that battery is sufficient to keep my fridge running for 2 to 3 day trips without draining the battery?
I run the Battery Guard 2000®. It Monitors the Battery voltage and if it drops below 12v it disconnects everything but the ECU. If it triggers all you do is push a button, reconnecting the battery and start the rig. Saved my butt a few times in my van. You can also use it to disconnect the battery which I use when Parking at trailheads. I have not worried about a dead starting battery for a decade or so.
Think I would look into why the OEM battery drained so quickly. I own a 19 4Runner TRD Pro and it sits in my driveway weeks at a time. Mine fires up without issue every time I need to go somewhere. I would purchase a amp meter, clip on style, to see how much drain your battery is seeing. A possibility might be the dash cams sensitivity threshold. Maybe you could adjust the motion sensitivity to ignore slight rocking of the truck such as motion caused by the wind. I’m not sure how your dash cam works however. Good luck
Richard Jones yeah dash cam in parking mode is definitely sensitive enough to pick up subtle movements in front and to the truck. I prefer it this way to ensure I capture anything that may give info if something were to happen (in case someone backs into my rig while parked or someone tries to “inspect” my ditch lights). I’m hoping this new battery will prove to be an ample solution 👍
Just bought a 2020 tundra. My 15 ram battery just went out on the ram I traded after 4,5 years . Replaced it with a Duracell group 27 agm from Sam's club for 179.00. I guess there made my East Pemn and has a 36 month warranty which is standard. North star is top of the line.
I have a 2017 Tacoma Sport that is stock except for brake controller. I tow a 17ft fiberglass travel trailer. I had to replace the battery in it earlier this year. The warranty on the truck did not cover the battery and the battery was an odd duck just like you said. It also was a very poor quality battery. I replaced it with a better quality name brand. A item that should be brought up to Toyota. I know your pain. Thank for sharing your adventures.
I live in Metro Vancouver, and just by coincidence, I too got a Northstar battery installed in my 2019 Tacoma a few days ago. It's one of those dual start/deep cycle batteries like yours, but with a different decal on it. Crazy expensive, eh? I don't have too much in my truck yet except for an ARB fridge and a Blackvue dash cam, but I don't want any complications when I'm camping out in the middle of nowhere and I can't start my truck up. See you on the trails!
Thank you for the tip.. Have 16 tundra with genessis dual battery installed less than a year and it still drained main battery all the way down..... not sure what caused, however toyota service center suspected either bad battery from the start or winch might be the reason.... definitly will try out the battery showing on video....Hopfully i can find same type for genesis sytem.

My stock battery in my 2018 Tundra died after 11,0000 miles. Still under warranty but didn't want to replace a crap battery with another crap battery so just got an Optima Yellow top deep cycle instead. Haven't had any issues since and now due to Corona have no place to go but the battery is good to go.
My stock Tundra battery only lasted 17k miles. I didn’t bother replacing it with another cheap “so called OEM battery” Instead I went with an Optima . New car factory batteries just don’t last. It’s the lowest bidder situation . You get what you pay for.
Damn Ed, just get a battery tender when you are gone for extended period. It will maintain your battery and keep it charged. Don't know if you have 120 plug near your parking space?

@Ed How did you like the battery after few months of use. I am debating X2 versus dual Genesis and X2 looks like a good option for not hardcore off-grid use. I am curious about your feedback.
It’s been solid. Never had a drain issue during the entire time of ownership , and it’s been placed under the exact same conditions as the stock battery
Did you look at the camera footage to see if that was the case for your drain? Either way a portable battery pack is the ticket, especially if you had that problem before.
Bert Kelly yeah it was definitely the dash cam. My previous truck did the same with its stock battery with just the camera connected to the battery. Jump pack is definitely high priority on the growing list 🍻
