- The 4th-ranked Georgetown Hoyas defeat the 5th ranked Syracuse Orangemen 61-54 in Landover, MD.
Charles Smith and Sherman Douglas were the respective stars for the Hoyas and Orangemen coming into the game, with Smith scoring 13 of 16 pts in the second half. Douglas had 13, but fouled out late in the game.
Derrick Coleman led Syracuse with 22 pts and 11 rbs, while Alonzo Mourning had 14 pts and 5 blocks for Georgetown.
Man, this brings back memories!
Those Sherman Douglas vs Charles Smith duels were always epic and great basketball to watch. Thanks for the upload.
What city you from?? Norfolk here
2 great point guards fro D.C. going at it. PRICELESS
Thanks for sharing. Syracuse were rockstars during this period. G-town were monsters. The commentary was legendary
Monsters??
There has never been a point guard like Sherman Douglas ever since. That man is the GOAT.
SMITTY WAS NOT A SLOUCH EITHER
@@jamesthomas6056 Smitty actually won Big East POY honors that year, to go along with Tournament MOP.
@@MusicManSeanB I’m a die hard Hoya fan a lot of people might disagree but I believe SMITTY is the best point guard in gtown history slightly above iverson
@@jamesthomas6056 I like Smitty a lot, especially considering he wasn't even supposed to have gotten that last scholarship in the 1985-1986 recruiting class. From people I know inside the program, that scholarship was supposed to go to Cardozo High School's All-Met/All-American guard, Earl Moore. He ended up after playing the waiting game to attend George Mason. I think Michael Jackson should get consideration as best point guard in history as well. Besides, he did help win a National Title, while almost helping us get a second.
@@MusicManSeanB I understand the only reason I say SMITTY is I was born in 1980 so actually saw him play I only got chance to see Jackson on replays but from the footage of him I seen I can see your point also point out that John in my opinion never let the guards do they thing it was always built around the center iverson was the only guard that he just let him do him
Epic battle of two of the best point guards come out of D.C smitty vs the general
Amazing basketball back then. Thank you for posting!
Zo Mourning, Derrick Coleman!!👏😁🙏thx for video 😊
I watched this game live at my grandparents house I was 15 years old and sports kept me busy back then so I wasn't bored or getting into trouble.
Billy "The Chill", D.C., The General, wow, thank you Hoya! Much respect to Big John 's passing, I actually miss him and you guys. Cuse in the house.

Thanks for this, particularly that it is full version. What a blast from the past. Had not seen this since I was 15 when game was live. Amazing to watch Syracuse push ball and attack the rim. So many great passes by the General, Sherm. Coleman was a beast with length and driving ability. in the end, Zo won the battle of freshman. He was outstanding on defense and a force around the rim. Billy Owens had a horrible game unfortunately and could not hit a thing. Outside shooting was not existent. Charles Smith with some clutch (tough) shots to keep Hoyas ahead towards end. Good game.
The good ol dayz...WOW...wish I could get bck
Thank you for posting!
This is before Sherman Douglas, blew up into 'The Tank' in the NBA. But a bunch of great players on the court, and Mutumbo was on the bench.
What a time for everything......wish I could go bck
In the air tonight - good times
Douglas completely out of control and panicked last few minutes .. they were only down 4-5 pts and totally panicked
This was when NCAA BB could compete with the NBA for ratings.
I know Big John had them practicing free-throws cuz they could have been put the game away.
A starting NBA five from both teams was possible with the amount of talent they had.
❤billy owens, 6feet 8 inches point guard
In this Certain Matchup.....Lets go ORANGEMEN!
Can someone actually know what happened to Charles smith without looking it up because he doesn't have any updates when I look online other than 2009 or 2010 when he got in trouble. I can't imagine he is still in jail unless he pulled a victor page got out and went back in a year later.
HE GOOD BEEN OUT LIVING A NORMAL LIFE. MIGHT SEE HIM AT THE STORE OR SOMETHING
DC AREA YOULL SEE EVERYBODY OUT HERE AND THERE
@@jkdortch2308 ok I hope that is the case thank you
He did time in prison. But he's home now.
The Capital Centre (then US Airways Group, Inc. Arena) in Landover, Maryland was near Federal Express Corporation Field. It had a funny looking roof. LOL. 😁😂🤪🤣🤭🙃🥴😳🙄🤦🤷👌
Also, it was just announced that Federal Express Corporation’s name on the walls of the stadium are coming off. They are breaking their naming rights agreement with the Washington Commanders. 👌
This was the year Michigan stole the title w that cheap foul vs Seton Hall. Cuse probably woulda taken it all if Coleman wasn't nursing a bad back in the tournament.
How in the world was mutombo not a starter?
2 hall of famers hoya saxa!!
