Every other instrumentalist looks at this tuning and says: “yep, makes perfect sense.”
Indeed. ;-)
Exactly!
As a young Guitarist turned Bassist professionally since 12, I’ve always felt it made more sense compositionally and playing wise to use 4ths tuning! I never got past basic guitar voicing so all the jazz chords and my own use of open strings with broken chords and clusters were informed by my bass technique. I’ve been trying to find ways to grow as a guitarist but as you know that’s hard when most cats play in standard; thank you for what you do man and I’ll be learning a lot from you!
THank you mate, I'm glad you found this video useful... Good luck with all your learning. Cheers for now. 👍🎸
Alex is Genius
Amazing. You are in a class of your own.
Thx Mate. :)
Definitely I will try out this tuning in 4ths. Beautiful little jam! You have a wonderful feeling. All the Best ;-)
Thx so much mate.
Thanks
Excellent. Looking forward to new videos on 4ths.
Omg, it’s like Christmas! Thanks for this Alex - as a beginner I really appreciate you taking the time to do this. So excited to try all these chords - think you have just quadrupled my chordal repertoire!
Fantastic... Well I hope you have lots of fun with it.. All the best.
Great! Thank you for taking the time to make this video. Useful for me as a P4 player.
Thanks, this is the best 4ths tuning chordal video I have seen to date, thanks for sharing
Hello Alex, Glad that you made content like this. i've been following since jamtrack central days. Glad that you're back with these sick videos. Hoping for more content like this.
Thx mate, there are more coming although I'll probably put some Music up next and then more of these will follow... Thx for watching. ;-)
Coming from bass this definitely makes a lot more sense to me haha! Will definitely be trying this out :D
Go for it mate. Thanks for watching 👍
Great Alex, keep going with this series!
More coming soon. :)
Awesome!
Maybe a video covering blues licks, which usually rely on the standard tuning third. How do you manage to sound bluesy tuning in fourths?
Thank you!
Coming up in the next video.. ;-)
I wish I could press the like button a million times..Alex you are shit hot. One of my favorite guitarists ever. I just wish I had plenty of Alex Hutchings cds to add to my collection..Just have to make do with my JTC tutorials.....
Thx so much mate. One day I promise.. ;-)
@@AlexHutchingsMusic I blummin hope so because you are so inspirational and skillful and clever on the guitar, I can only surmise that the music you write is going to blow our tiny minds away.
@@thorndog100 Hahah I hope so, in a good way of course.. Thx for the support dude. ;-)
This is really helpful. Now you have given me a bit more of an idea regarding chord shapes I may try 4ths tuning for a week to see how I progress.
Go for it... Good luck mate. ;-)
Amazing stuff Alex, not to mention some great playing too. I mentioned in a comment in your first video that I was on the road but now I don't think I can wait till I get back home. Have my acoustic and my Strat with me. Somehow feel my Strat may end up tuned in 4ths. Great work and thanks so much for sharing it.
My pleasure mate, I hope you get something from it... There will be a few more videos to come on this topic too. Also I'm just mixing off a new tune scheduled for upload this Thursday so look out for that too. I hope you'll enjoy it... All the best out there. ;-)
Thanks so much for these vids Alex. I’ve had my acoustic tuned this way for a few days now and quite digging it. Takes a wee bit of adjustment but you are right - it’s quite intuitive. Some nice alternative chord sounds.
Glad you're enjoying it mate.. Good luck with it. ;-)
Awesome as always \m/
Thanks for the introduction videos on 4th tuning 👍
I always wanted to give it a try but never get into it. Didn't know where to start.
Dear Alex
thank you so much for your vids and posts on perfect 4th tuning.
Used to be a bass player all my live and started to play guitar a couple of years ago. Since i was used to the 4th tuning and did not want get a headache i just re tuned my guitar accordingly. Thus single note lines were easy but i stumbled when chords came up ... just weren't familiar with chords. So i started googling and came across your great stuff ... just great!
All the best.
Fabulous.. So pleased you got something out of it. All the best to you. :)
Aaaahhhh!..Brilliant!!
AAAAhhhhhhh... Thank you Sir...!!!
awesome as always Alex!
met you a couple of months ago. was blown away by your playing and how nice you are.
thanks! :)
Thanks so much mate. My pleasure. All the best.
@@AlexHutchingsMusic Always supporting you kind sir!
Hi Alex. The guitar chords from 4.59 minute to 5.15 minute are fantastic. The final improvisation is simply superlative. Your guitar phrases are unique; they come out of your great heart and your great musical soul
Hey Luigi, thank you very much for you kind words really glad you like it. All the best.
This guy is a great teacher love this tuning
Cheers mate, good luck with it if you try it.... Thanks for watching. ;-) 👍
Thank you
Muy bueno mi amigo Alex
Amazing. I turned my guitar last week and in love with it. I’m a bass player too and love C string and recently have a new one being constructed to be EADGC. I decided to change in guitar because I’m not having soo much fun with my guitar and...... woooo suddenly I feel im love with my guitar too.
Amazing thing to do and I don’t fell like I was wasting about hundred chord melody arrangins but having a chance to play then in a new way.... better way... ok something can be worst but ok go ahead! Rssss
Perfect like a still.St.
175 extra points on the B bender. 😊
🤣😂Thank you for the extra points... 👍
Im coming from a P5-Tuning (yes! P5) and i find P4 is a nice compromise because of the symetry. I love it! Awesome playing as usual :D
I've had my guitar p4 tuned for awhile n just recently hv been exploring quartal harmony involving guide tone based rootless chord voicings. P4 tuning really reduces the number of voicings one has to learn.
The end piece rocks. Can you talk about the harmonic layout a little bit -scales/chords? Rock on!
It took 1 day to convince me to use this even the sweep picking shapes are way more convenient
Thanks again Alex for sharing you incredible knowledge BTW( love the hat )! As always Peace ✌🏻😎✌🏻Dana E✨
Uma maneira nova d pensar na guitarra!
Absolutamente. Obrigado por assistir.
My idol
Owoww Soo Nice Chord sir
Glad you like it. ;-)
Ок!Значимо!
Hey Alex - I was thinking about your new Waghorn with the extra fret at the nut on the C and F strings to make them E and B, and then seeing you with this G&L with the B bender...
Have you thought about getting a guitar with something a bit like the EV D tuna, but for the top 2 strings, so you can jump from 4ths to standard at the push of a button?
Im so tempted to change to perfect 4th but... Im so scared only to thing in relearn all my scale, arpeggio, triad, voicings... Any advice to make a transition between the two tunings?
Love all your videos, Alex 😊
On Facebook there is 4Th tuning Group. I follow them because there's no much documents about 4th. I want use to learn and play jazz.... easly.
Alex, what is that little things behind your bridge? btw phenomenal playing as always))
G and B bender
César is right is a G and B bender or in my case a G & C bender... ;-)
@@AlexHutchingsMusic oh yeah, G and C😁
@ Even tho I forgot myself and wrote B bender in the Jam at the end... hahahah..Oh well ;-)
@@AlexHutchingsMusic you need that for this tuning?
You really should contact me. I have this figured out like Einstein. Like a computer algorithm busting out any chord scale or arpeggio.
i've heard due to the altered tension some tunings may be hazardous. is this exaggerated or/and what are the countermeasures (string thickness and such)?
Hi there, actually I simply use a regular string gauge and it doesn't cause any issues for me... 9's or 10's... Thanks for watching 👍🙏🎸
I came for the outro
That's cool with me Sir...🙂There is a Jam at the end of part 3 & 4 coming soon also. Thx for watching. :-)
What are those two string extensions behind the bridge?
That is a b and a g bender. They are not connected in this video but they are super cool. All the best 👍🙏🎸
Hey Alex ! How do you deal with the extra tension on the high strings ? do you go with 9s ? i have hard time bending a whole step on the high F string with 10s ...
I was thinking going Eb perfect fourth, to have a nice tension with high strings
Hi mate, Thx for your comment. Well I would say of course it will take a little while to adjust to the tension, slight though it may be, whilst I was on tour last year I played with 10's for over 100 gigs and it worked fine but now I'm back home I tend to use 9's... However on this Tele I'm still using 10's.... Good luck mate, I hope you enjoy it, new video on 4ths coming soon. ;-)
@@AlexHutchingsMusic Guess i'll try different gages and see what's best for me then ^^. Thanks for the answer, been following you since your JTCs jams for a long time, you re awesome ! cheers
@@meruemu Thanks so much dude, Appreciate the support... Good luck with everything and see you on the next Vid... ;-)
