  • It's my turn for a lesson, and this one was extremely productive for me. A few sharp-eyed youtube commenters on some of my games noted that I really didn't have an offensive backhand, and I couldn't figure out why, or how. Coach Jay really breaks down my weak backhand being related to poor positioning of my elbow, my bad habits, and gives me the ability to feel what a proper backhand feels like in the end. I loved this lesson, and watching this video helped me reinforce what I learned, and what my bad habits looks like.

      Thanks I agree. I'm happy that I've met some remarkable coaches who know these fundamental things shouldn't be a secret. But of course, I hope that it translates into more students for them, after all, this game doesn't get addicting until you can have some good rallies.

    Really enjoy the lesson videos. Feel like a lot of people can learn from them as well. I take lessons however since I am so far away from any coaches I have to do them online with my robot. It still really helps. Would really like to see more lessons like this !

      Thank you so much, I'm glad you feel these videos are helpful. I have a couple goals in this sport, the primary being growing the table tennis community, and I think one of the best ways to do that is giving people the knowledge of how to hit proper strokes, and what they should feel and look like. What would help the most is if you could direct any of your TT friends to this channel if you feel that they could learn something. I appreciate your support.

      @@LosAngelesTableTennis Yes for sure it's vital to the sports success here in the US that the fundamentals of the game become more accessible to the masses. Thanks for doing your part to make table tennis more popular for everyone! Also I've been watching you on the MLTT you've had some awesome points! Crazy forehand.

    Nice video. A word of caution. It may ultimately be detrimental to go to a lot of different coaches since every coach does things a little bit different. For the backhand, some coaches like the elbow high, others like it low, but you should decide based on what is the most comfortable for your body. For the forehand, a lot of coaches these days like the feet to be more parallel, unlike Johan's style, which is more old school. His foot placement on the BH is also not conventional. At the end of the day, it's way more important to go to one coach and develop a technique that is *reasonably efficient*, comfortable for you and does not expose you to injury rather than trying to develop some type of optimal technique.

      Hey thanks for the input. Here, I don't mind going to different coaches to give more exposure to the sport and different styles of playing and coaches. I pick what works for me and like to learn a lot from everyone, kind of like what Bruce Lee did with martial arts. MIXED MARTIAL PONG!

      Agree with you about the stance, the modern style seems to favor a more square stance as it allows for easier transition between FH / BH. That said, realistically, it doesn't matter too much at the amateur level, most important thing is to develop the fundamental techniques and be able to integrate with footwork.

    For your forehand, please be mindful of your shoulder during extended multiball training! Not saying this is the case with you but if one is too tense/relying on the shoulder too much to generate power, it could lead to injury!

  • @lt.kettch
    @lt.kettch 9 месяцев назад

    For your BH, I couldn't see well but I wanted to ask if you were using your thumb as the main "support" for your paddle. This may be a reason for inconsistent/wobbly bh stroke. If you look at your coach's bh grip, he raises his thumb so the paddle is more stable.
    If you feel like there's not enough room for a comfortable back swing, lower you center of gravity and lean a bit more forward.
    It might be the camera angle but it also looks like you're trying to "brake" too early during your offensive bh section, stifling your follow through.
    Be careful not to reach for the ball on BH, let it come to your optimal strike zone or your hit becomes all wrist and loses quality.
    When you get the chance, try taking another step back, hitting the ball a little later while adding brush more up (to add spin) with your fingers + wrist and adding power from your waist and forearm... If that makes any sense 😅
    Hope this helps!

      Definitely thumb mainly. I was wondering why my bh sometimes looked so wobbly. I actually did a lesson with hiroe yesterday and she said I was using 100% thumb as well.
