  • Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) is a varied and highly complex neurological condition which can present with disorders of body movement, sensation, speech, and function.
A coordinated multi-disciplinary approach may be involved in your treatment including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology and psychology. At ARC, we work as a team and coordinate services alongside your medical specialist to make sure you get the best benefit. Treatment will always be tailored to your particular needs.
If you have been diagnosed with a functional movement disorder, you and your medical team may be at a loss with how to get help to function better and indeed how to find a health professional who understands the condition. We are one of the only sites in Australia to offer a dedicated multi-disciplinary FND team of clinicians to help you with this complex condition.

In 1998 it was thought I had MS due to the shaking, which was not in any specific place each day. After an MRI I was told it was cervical spondylitis. In 2014 I had a bad fall and broke my shoulder blade, also had a really stressful episode over a cat... The events triggered what must have been FND all the time however after a 6 month wait I got to see a neurologist for suspected Parkinson's for between 3 and 5 minutes. No further tests at all, just 4 annual telephone consultations the first told me I didn't have Parkinson's but it was probably FND. I am 78, have violent painful tremors. My left side is the worst and I cant walk, stand or sit. I have 3 walkers and a wheelchair that I cannot use. Carers come in 3 times every day and I have to pay for everything to be done. I live on benefits. I am sedated to the maximum limit and the same with painkillers. If I didn't live alone and had been recognised with FND in 1998 when the shaking first started I could get help, however at 78 no-one cares. Just dope me up and shove me in a corner and forget about me... I had a very unhappy childhood and strongly believe FND is caused by stress, there is only so much we can take then like all machines it breaks down and either gets thrown out or fixed...
You are so lucky to be getting treatment I wish you happiness and the best health possible.
