I scored a 1969 era eb1 in Hawaii on vacation. This guy isn't even taking this bass as far as it can go. It can completely overdrive a tube amp into that Cream and Mountain territory with no added effects. I use it with a 1969 Traynor YBA 1 through a 2x12 cab. It keeps up and then some.
@@6arcsn1sky I would never sell it. I got it for $1000 with original case. I haven't been able to find a used one for under 2 or 3000. Like I said, this guys is demoing this bass all wrong. He never took it to the extreme of what you can get out of it.
Felix Pappalardi from Mountain (sounds like the opening chord from Nantucket Sleigh Ride at 4:36) used this Bass almost exclusively. Jack Bruce used Felix's actual EB-1 Bass during the Cream reunion shows at the Royal Albert Hall shortly before he passed away a few years ago.
Mountain is definitely in my top 3 bands ever, I really wish gibson would reissue the EB-1. There was an epiphone version but it wasn't the right colour, had a normal mudbucker and doesn't have the double bass stand thing. I'll probably my own version a some point.
I like to think of that as Jack's tribute to Felix Pappalardi and both their days with Leslie West and Corky Laing. Although I think both used EB-1's of a more contemporary vintage than this '56.
That pickup is not a humbucker, it is sidewinder single coil (coil's top and bottom face sideways) with the magnets closer to the neck and the screw pole pieces (external to the coil, like in a gold-foil type) on the opposite side, the end nearer to the bridge. I'm not complaining at all btw, this is the only video I've found anywhere of one of these pickups through an amp. I'm very impressed to hear what this design sounds like in isolation from other instruments, Gibson really did nail that stand-up bass sound with this design but trends gravitated towards higher outputs to drive louder, more efficient amps through the stadium rock era
I am one of those who have not seen one of these before (outside of books!). While it's not my favorite bass, this might be one of my favorite of your videos because you broke out that kickstand!!!! Thanks for that. I've not seen those in action and it is cool to finally see it. These really highlight the confusion of the electric guitar industry as to how they were transitioning from acoustic uprights to electric basses. Fascinating. Great video
Awesome tone. FYI, the pickup here is single coil. The humbuckers came out in 1958 with the EB2. You can spot the single coil pickup because the pole pieces are at the bottom of the pickup cover, instead of in the middle. Also, the brown cover is only for single coils.
transtremm That same bass, is owned by John Paul Jones. He purchased it in '68. Also made its way through a few of James Brown's bass players hands in the early 60's.
Wouldn't Usually Say I Like A Violin Bass, But... This Is An Exception. Surprisingly I'm Not Even A Bass Player And This Is One Of The Best Things I've Seen On This Show.
Cool demo. I believe it's the only one of this awesome bass on youtube. Just one correction: it's a single-coil pickup on the 1953-57 Gibson Electric Bass. The humbucker version came in with the 1958 edition.
I started in a band in high school and had to leave a few years later when the draft was catching up with me. I started with a generic inexpensive starter base then moved to the Hofner Club Bass, and ended up selling it to buy a Givson EB1 from a musician that was down on his luck. It weighted a ton but it was worth every second of misery to play that thing every night.
John Paul Jones was pictured with one of those on an early Zeppelin album cover. Super cool looking but only has its trademark thudding sound, one reason Fenders are in almost every bass player's collection. Classic bass nonetheless!
Paul Simmons It was on Led Zep III. He played it on Tangerine. It was originally used in Little Richard's band, in the late 50's, and James Brown's band, in the early 60's. He picked it up between the "Beck's Bolero" sessions, and the forming of Led Zeppelin.
Wild, a lot of the old basses needed constant control while they were being played, as it was never quite certain what sound was going to come out, when moving to a different part of the neck.
The proper name for that bass is actually the Gibson EB although everyone calls them EB-1's, they didn't name them EB-1's until they were reissued during the late 60's. They were revised because of Felix Pappalardi who had an EB, I believe he asked them to make them again.
jangly trebly basses don't impress me, if the guitar is going to control the high end, the bass should fill the low end with a totally different timbre - this is perfect
Gibson basses are definitely an acquired taste. I personally love them. (I own an EB3). They are unmistakably old school bass. Deep, fat, warm, and rulers of frequencies where no guitar dares to tread.
Love it. Flatwounds? Great job Mark. You look like you're enjoying yourself playing these basses on Thursdays. Keep em coming. How about a vintage P-bass sometime - you must have one in the shop.
I just watched a video of Little Richard from 1956/1957 and I saw Olsie "Baysee" Robinson playing this brown violin shaped electric bass. My first thought was, What the hell is that? So researching it I discovered it was the original Gibson EB. Personally, I played and still have a 1969 Gibson EB-3 that I bought in 1970/1971.
I need a kickstand for this bass can anybody please help. the one in the video looks aftermarket as well but i could be wrong. do i have to make one myself?
Starting from the first video uploaded to this channel back in 2008, this is around video #900. I've watched em all. lol. About another 934 to go to get caught up
I think the reason they never re-issued this bass is epipone makes alot of the reissue stuff they made and eb1 with the sg body shape and they made the viola bass witch looks alot like a hofner 500/1 and if they made a replica of this bass they would then have two violin shipped bass and the beatle bass was alot better know. By the way I have creams reunion concert at Albert hall and in the first half of the set he plays the Gibson version of the viola bass it looks awsome its like a candy apple red he often played short scale in the second half he played a Warwick fretless bass he was and awsome player him and ginger baker where the perfect team they would just jam away while Eric played all kinds of riffs and leads all while keeping a melody going r.i.p. jack and ginger I'm sure you are still playing on another plane.
WOW!!! Totally flabbergasted!!! Was NOT expecting that sound to come out of that bass!!!
To my ears it sounds more like an upright bass than any other electric bass that I've heard. I was really surprised too.
Gibson should bring back this bass.
Eastwood makes reissues of these now!
@@krimsworld I'll get one: one that bears the 1968 head as opposed to the 1953 head.

@@maxreichert8050 I hope you still own that 1969 EB1 since Felix Pappalardi made it sound more bad ass with Sunn tube amplifiers.
@@6arcsn1sky I would never sell it. I got it for $1000 with original case. I haven't been able to find a used one for under 2 or 3000.
Like I said, this guys is demoing this bass all wrong. He never took it to the extreme of what you can get out of it.
Honestly, this is probably my favorite sounding bass of all time.
We opened for Badfinger in the early 80's and Tom Evans was playing one of these.
Great demo of it Mark!
Love your sense of humour!
I absolutely need one of these basses. That tone when he played Sunshine of your Love absolutely kicked my ass.
Felix Pappalardi from Mountain (sounds like the opening chord from Nantucket Sleigh Ride at 4:36) used this Bass almost exclusively. Jack Bruce used Felix's actual EB-1 Bass during the Cream reunion shows at the Royal Albert Hall shortly before he passed away a few years ago.

hard to believe that gibson would discontinue such an iconic bass.
Yeah. Especially when you see some of the atrocious looking basses Gibson made after the Thunderbird🥴
Jack Bruce played one at the Royal Albert Hall Cream Reunion Concerts.
Cool
I like to think of that as Jack's tribute to Felix Pappalardi and both their days with Leslie West and Corky Laing. Although I think both used EB-1's of a more contemporary vintage than this '56.
Piedscooter1 I thought they played EB-0 basses which were kinda like a Gibson SG bass
Piedscooter1 I saw them at Frogs place
oh yea saw Cream at R. I. auditorium.
Awesome, a bass that sounds like a bass! This might be my favorite "Guitar of the Day" video.
My favorite Gibson Bass ever. Felix Papplardi of Mountain, with a wall of Sunn Amps.
Tom Howland I love sunn amps, the sun beta head for guitar had so much fucking gain. It was ridiculous
I saw them a few times during the early 70's in Worcester, MA.

MY ALL TIME FAVORITE GIBSON BASS - THE ALL POWERFUL AND KNOWING 1956 GIBSON EB~1 BASS... A POWERHOUSE
Vgg

that's only because you never heard the gibson "cello bass". rare as hen's dicks, but they are incredible sounding
That is pretty cool. Really deep sound. Probably the closest sound to a stand up that I've every heard.
The Ashbory Bass sounds much closer to an upright than the Gibson. Solid silicone rubber strings!
It's 5.20am here in the UK and I'm lying in bed watching this. Damn you Agnesi!
Mr Muck same thing here bro
I'm happy I'm not the until one who does stuff like that
I am one of those who have not seen one of these before (outside of books!). While it's not my favorite bass, this might be one of my favorite of your videos because you broke out that kickstand!!!! Mark is the guitar Guru of information we want you back you are the reason I watch the show
Thanks Mark. I always wanted to know how the 'kick stand' actually attached.

good lord, that sounds amazing; I had forgotten Gibson even made basses.
well done, Mark!
He really digs that jacket.
anthony drake he's a dude. I don't think he's required to wear more than one jacket. ever. I'm proud of him for changing pants daily.
i have the same one lol
You can see this played by Little Richard's bass player in the 1956 movie, "Don't knock the rock."
transtremm That same bass, is owned by John Paul Jones. He purchased it in '68. Also made its way through a few of James Brown's bass players hands in the early 60's.
A frickin' THUMPER - way, so cool. Makes me want to play bass. Wow!

What was the song at 2:31?
I don't play bass but that would be pretty darn cool to have.
I think if you were a 50s bassist and had the choice between a 50s P- Bass and This , you would be Insane to chose this
I started in a band in high school and had to leave a few years later when the draft was catching up with me. I love the comment Jen left in the text overlay at the end (6:42) - "It's an EB-1 A-Hole". Mark called it an EB-0 violin base.

Thanks for the memory jog. After 40+ years of enjoying Zep's music, you'd think I'd remember where I'd seen this bass. Thanks again!
Paul Simmons

All EQs at noon- volumes, too. That is my automatic go-to initial setting on any amp.
Wot! No Mountain?
Early Ampeg basses also had the screw-in stand, or peg, and the Ampeg name was short for "amplified peg."
thunder Thursdays
brandon harrington I like it!!!!! Thunder Thursdays sounds awesome
brandon harrington, you took the words right out of my mouth!
I was literally logging on to comment that they should be called "Thunder Thursdays"!

That's my holy grail bass tone right there
Mark Agnesi, cool videos, I love old Les Paul Customs, more videos of them, please and thank you!!!!
this bass sounds amazing.
Looks so much fun to play that bass
Please do a video of that selmer amp at the bottom left at 6:27
Had a chance to buy one of these once, unfortunately I didn't play base at the time.
jangly trebly basses don't impress me, if the guitar is going to control the high end, the bass should fill the low end with a totally different timbre - this is perfect
Agreed
please demo the eb3 Gibson bass! it will be really cool to hear how the jack Bruce's bass really sounded
Watching in 2019. Love Mark
Gotta do at least one Mountain tune. That thing sounds great!
Gibson basses are definitely an acquired taste. I personally love them. (I own an EB3). They are unmistakably old school bass. Deep, fat, warm, and rulers of frequencies where no guitar dares to tread.
I need that kickstand for my SG! Badass bass!
Felix Pappalardi of Mountain has one of those basses
This is the best violin shaped bass ever. Reason: solid body. Have never played a hollow body bass with {IMHO) a sound I like.
Honestly outside of price and availability it's amazing this didn't become iconic like the Fender stuff. Honestly for me this sounds so much better
#ThunderingThursday I think that's what you should call the bass Thursday
Love it. Flatwounds? Great job Mark. You look like you're enjoying yourself playing these basses on Thursdays. Keep em coming. How about a vintage P-bass sometime - you must have one in the shop.
Would like to try a rick 4005 though but they do not come by very often.
I love the sound of this bass
lovely..thanks for sharing this..has a nice thick sound (School's Out!..yeah)..and that kickstand!!
I love this tone
Felix Papalardi,Randall’s Island,1969?.Leslie West,Corky Lang,Steve Knight
Sunshine Of Your Love
what's the song he played with the pick
what was the second song played
This rig is GENIUS! #STANDUPAGNESI ! ! !
I think the bass player for Little Richard used this for the videos.
You forgot Felix Pappalardi!
That is a nice done clip !! Great info.
I love the tone.
Nice dark sound. Doesn't sound like a toy like so many basses today.
I want this
I like how the tuners are behind the head
Sunshine of my love is such a killer tune
song name ? 5:05

Wow Hofner eat your heart out lol. Just kidding but man this bass sounds sick. It's definitely got the Hofner tone what a sick vintage bass.
I need a kickstand for this bass can anybody please help. the one in the video looks aftermarket as well but i could be wrong. do i have to make one myself?
OMG... the only way to play that is on the stand, that would look so unique on stage.
Curious to know what it sold for. Way cool bass.
Coolest bass I’ve ever seen
Amazing sound.
can u put the songs you play in the description please
Do you ever do Gibson rippers? If so PLEASE do a review!
Starting from the first video uploaded to this channel back in 2008, this is around video #900. I've watched em all. lol. About another 934 to go to get caught up
I love everything but the painted on f-holes
Very cool and great sounding bass!
I'm digging the kick stand I think playing a bass upright would be uber sickness
School's Out! Oh...I can just imagine the gut rumble live
First, EB1 looks awesome
What a warm sounding
Eastwood makes a very good reissue of this bass. Not sure if it comes with the stand though
I really miss these old days when people could actually demonstrate gear with real songs.
love the sound
really special
I have a plan for one of these, but lets just say that for what I have planned you wouldn't want to use a 50s guitar.
Single coil on that one. Side single. Later they used the new humbucker.
The coolest bass ever
holy shit!that sound!
the mud bass in its greatest form. tbh tho i feel bad for the guy who plays with this thing sitting down. owch
I'm thinking a version of this thats long scale, maple body, neck through, basically this bass crossed with a Rickenbacker
Great sounding bass.
EB-1 was from late 60's. The catalog lists these as "EB"
That's actually a sidewound singlecoil. Later they'd bring in humbuckers.
