  • In 1980, we experienced our very first visit to Kings Dominion. The family photos of this trip have been scanned and used to produce this throwback video. We have since visited Kings Dominion many times. As you will see as you watch the video, many attractions and the overall look of the park has changed.

The park was a special place to go in those days. The Kings Dominion of the 70s and 80s was more about the overall family experience then it was about pure thrills. The park was well-themed. It had the beloved Hanna-Barbara stable of characters and was so well-regarded at the time that it was featured in the major motion picture Roller Coaster that came out in 1977. I miss this park as it used to be. Thank you for letting us go back to revisit a time and place that have sacred memories for many of us who were fortunate enough to be children then.

thanks for posting this. I grew up in Richmond going to KD throughout the 80's and early 90's and remember much of this well. Oh gosh, how I LOVED that toad and the singing toadstools. I feel like I used to make my parents stand there and wait....and wait...and wait until they came "alive".

Oh these were the best days! My whole family would go from my parents to my toddler nephews and everyone had so much fun running the park! No cell phones, Dad would say everyone meet back at the Eiffel tower at a certain time. Nobody ever got lost.

I miss the HB themed stuff. I preferred it before becoming Paramount Kings Dominion. Of course I’m too young for this as I was born in 1981, but some of these were still around when I first attended.

Thanks for your comment! Kings Dominion has changed a lot of the years. We visited in 1980 and 1981. It was not until 1999 that we visited again. By 1999, the animals and the HB themes and characters were all gone. Kings Dominion had become a roller coaster park with both wooded and steel coasters. We went specifically to ride the Volcano!

@@skikowaleski Man I hated Volcano because they had to do away with the other stuff that was in that mountain area. The doozers or whatever and then it became Smurf Mountain. Then it was like a Haunted River attraction. I really enjoyed that. I haven’t been to Kings Dominion since the early 2000s. As a kid I’d end up going every summer but I also lived in Richmond VA. I miss the old stuff.

@ssjup81 thanks for your comment. Our timings are very interesting. In the 1980's we lived in North Carolina and visited Kings Dominion when the Haunted River was in the Lost Mountain. In 2000, we moved to Richmond and our first visit to Kings Dominion was to ride the Volcano which and as you know used the Lost Mountain. Today, the mountain is long gone.

@@darrylellis4809 that’s what I always say. It lost all its charm when it was sold and they got rid of all the good rides and Hanna barbera characters. Yogis cave went from being a fun walk through to boring empty cave. Also loved the Hanna Barbera gift shop they had. Have not been back in years now.

@@mcstacia Yes absolutely this place was the equivalent of going to Disney World back in the early 70’s and the 80’s. Now this park is almost looks like a baron wasteland with out really no charm to it.

Willy Joe Films, we have never been to Kings Island so it is great to know they are similar. If we get up to Ohio we will have to stop by and check. I stopped by your channel and it looks like you are not a fan of the Great Pumpkin Ride! Thanks for commenting.
