@@gealg5752 no...it wasn't his birthday. I edited out a lot of the chatter from the show and before each song they announced it was a different band member's birthday.
This is a piece of music history. The talent is superb, and more and more people appreciate it. As I write this, Toto are about to pass 30 million monthly listeners on Spotify. They have already passed The Rolling Stones, making them one of the 20 most popular bands by listening figures. Not what a journalist says we should like, but what we choose to listen to. Toto still has history that has yet to be written. Thank you for sharing this fantastic concert.
I was at this concert. My brother, who was a close friend of Luke’s, called me and told me it would be a good idea to be there. One rehearsal and then a performance that evening! I attended various permutations of this group over the years, including a version which included Tom Scott on tenor sax, and then the Los Lobatamys versions. Forty years later, I still harken back to these performances as the one of best things I ever experienced musically. It helped that I was about 10 feet away from the stage, but the musicianship is, I think we can all agree, nonpareil. Even at the time, we knew we were experiencing something magical. Lukather at about 23. Pacaro on drums in the most intimate of settings, and Mr. Mathieson on Prophet 5 and the Hammond Organ with the giant Leslie speakers. It will never, ever get better than this.
Yeah...I remember it being a very different show than the usual Greg Mathieson gig. The young upstart Steve Lukather tearing the joint apart!!! It was a fun and funny show. I'm going back to the Baked in a week to see Mike Miller and a bunch of the BP regulars.
John - you must be Scott's brother - I met Scott when he was producing / lining up management for a project I was in that never materialized. Small world! Great hearing these stories btw - I like how there's a totally different level of energy on this recording / show. I think the tape is a scosche fast here tho. I had a similar life changing live experience sitting near Vinnie Colaiuta during the 2000 era of Greg Mathieson (I was right next to the dude the filmed this : ruclips.net/video/7HyUfPWwlg4/видео.html ) cheers!
Thanks, I have boxes and boxes of old bootlegs, but I promised one of the artists about 30 years ago that I wouldn't share them. If I bump into her I will ask again, Great players in her band. Vinnie, Jimmy Haslip, Russ Ferrante, Michael Landau, Tower horns... those were the days. I've got a Lee Ritenour from 78 that I need to finish and post.

Right now I'm reading the memoirs of Lukather "The gospel according Luke" and he mentions a lot about his time in the baked potato and how happy he was at that time.

Man!! Im a huge fan of Jeff P but I don’t know he can play like that. Now it’s really really true that he is just humble when he says he don’t have chops and can’t solo. He is a well discipline drummer to not show off this kind of stuff everytime, but when he do, he really really do show it off but without leaving that tasty groove. Such a monster drummer indeed.
WoW! Thank you for this post. Its one of the most exciting and priceless experience. Jeff is Sooooooo Good!! and Steve is also unbelievable. I really hope you can post the legendary Pages show. I love them!!!
Well...the Pages tape audio quality isn't very good. In those days I would often sneak into the Greek Theater in Los Angeles. You'd jump the fence and run through the trees and climb the light tower in the back. You had enough room to spread out a big picnic up there and nobody could see you. The sound is a bit far-away. I will transfer and post soon.
I represent the mystery music of which you speak, weary traveler. Did you return to this experience the next day, as you promised? If you did not, it is my duty to remind you of your commitment.
I really only found out about Jeff during my first weeks of high school in Sept 77. My friend invited all the drummers in marching band to a drum clinic. John Guerin with his band, Jeff Porcaro with his band, and Louis Bellson and his big band. I had seen Louis before but seeing John and Jeff was a life changing experience to say the least. When I saw the ad in the paper that Lukather was going to play I knew it was going to be an amazing show. 40 years later to find my old bootleg...wow...like reliving it all over again
You're welcome. I should get in touch with Lukather or Greg and see if they would release the un-processed recording without all the "Jay Graydoning" for download.
Thanks for uploading! It's interesting to hear your pure version compared to the released one. I also wonder if any of the players got royalties from the album or the movie this was on.
I know someone always asks a gear question about a million years ago but…does anyone know what Luke was using for a guitar rig here? Doesn’t sound like a Marshall. Maybe his Rivera modified Deluxe.
I keep getting asked that question, but in all honesty I doubt it. The first 3 songs were transferred from a CD my friend made 20 years ago from my original cassette and I don't know if he ever gave me back the cassette. he used a lot of noise reduction and normalizing and you can see the file is compressed and clips like crazy. the last 2 songs are from the tape I recently found and it isn't in the best of shape. I didn't do anything to it but I'm sure youtube makde it sound crappier that it really is. 40 year old cassette tapes....not the best, but it's all I got. I'm actually going to the Baked Potato to see Mike Miller tomorrow and the same friend who did the transfer will be there so I will ask him if he has the original cassette or at least the file somewhere so he can de-compress it.

@Gary Gibson, is there a way you could share the original raw track without compression? We would like to add it to our public Toto database. Feel free to contact me!
Hi and thanks for asking. I've been asked this a few times recently, but the main problem is there are 2 parts to this recording. I knew about the first part and my friend took my tape about 20 years ago and digitized it. He also put a lot of noise reduction and whatever on it and I know it is compressed and clipping like crazy. I honestly don't know if he gave me back the tape or still has it because I haven't found it yet in my vast collection of bootlegs. The second part was something I found recently and didn't know I had. That could be transferred and sent but the original recordings really aren't that great to begin with....and they are 40 years old. As it happens, I'm going to the Baked Potato on Friday and will see my friend who did the digitizing 20 years ago so I will ask and get back to you. You never know...
