Lee Ritenour & Friendship Live at the Roxy on the Sunset Strip, December 11 1978
When I started high school in 1977 I met another drumer in marching band named Chris whose father was a studio musician. Until this time I just listened to the radio and never gave a thought as to who played on the albums. Chris took me to a drum symposium during the first week of school and the drummers playing were Louis Bellson, John Guerin, and Jeff Porcaro...and their bands which included Larry Carlton and Robben Ford. I was changed musically from that moment. Next, Chris took me to the brand Library in Glendale CA which had a great jazz record collection. That's where I first heard Lee Ritenour. Lee had a regular Tuesday evening gig at the Baked Potato jazz club, and after a couple ...

Marilyn Scott Live with Bobby Caldwell
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.Год назад
Singer-songwriter Bobby Caldwell passed away a few days ago (3-14-23) and I wanted to post a little something to honor his memory. In the early to mid 1980s singer Marilyn Scott would play at the Santa Monica club "At My Place" every 3 to 4 months. Her band was always the best musicians in town which generally included her writing partners and founders of the Yellowjackets, Russell Ferrante on ...
Burt Bacharach & Carol Bayer Sager Live Concert October 1981 at the Roxy Theater on the Sunset Strip
Просмотров 1,9 тыс.Год назад
In October 1981 Burt Bacharach and his then wife, lyricist, Carol Bayer Sager played a couple nights at the Roxy Theater on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood. To this day it remains one of the best concert experiences I have ever had. I have always thought this was a mono recording but upon recent listening I think it is possibly the first bootleg recording made on my stereo Sony TCS310 recording w...
Jazz Piano Christmas 1993
Просмотров 3532 года назад
Host Mel Torme introduces some of the greatest jazz pianists playing (and even singing) our most beloved Christmas classics. This comes from a cassette I made from a radio broadcast back in December 1993. I played the tape to death over the years and there was already plenty of static and radio noise and the digital transfer has clipping and noise reduction that isn't great by today's standards...
Robben Ford Live at Hop Singh's early to mid 80s
Просмотров 2 тыс.3 года назад
Robben Ford Band at Hop Singh’s, Marina De Rey, CA somewhere around 1983 to 1985 Another entry from my vast collection of bootleg cassettes is this performance by the Robben Ford Band. This is really representative of the shows Robben was doing after the Yellowjackets and before his Talk To Your Daughter album came out. I had seen him many times from the late 70s thru the 90s and up until this ...
John Guerin & Friends Live at Donte's June 21, 1980
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.3 года назад
John Guerin & Friends at Donte’s Jazz Club I know I wrote that it took place on June 21 1980, but it may actually have been a year earlier. Either way it was an evening of heavyweight musicianship. Larry Carlton on guitar, Russell Ferrante on keyboard, and Pops Popwell on bass. I remember I went to this show with my friends Kevin and Maria, and when we got to the club early we found that most o...
Baked Potato Super Live - "Naked" Greg, Jeff, Steve, & Pops
Просмотров 30 тыс.3 года назад
In December 1981 Greg Mathieson, Jeff Porcaro, Steve Lukather, and Pops Popwell played a 3 night gig at the Baked Potato Jazz Club. I was at one of the shows and brought along my new Sony stereo recording Walkman. A few months later I bumped into a friend who said they used one of the songs in the movie Zapped. I had no idea until February 2021 that they made a recording of the show and release...

Nine years ago while staying at a friend's apartment in Italy I found a handful of his old 45 rpm singles and a broken record player. Getting that record player to work again was 2 of the best spent hours of my life. I had forgotten about it but recently found the camera's SD card in a drawer. Enjoy!!!

This makes me rabbit hole into the photo-player. Because this is clearly in a beautiful moment after film yet before talkies. I have to wonder if our gracious host is also a musical historian with specializations in Hollywood and:or American film history. And also whether there was a “same way every time” vs an “open to current events via small musical expression” beef.

This is a piece of music history. The talent is superb, and more and more people appreciate it. As I write this, Toto are about to pass 30 million monthly listeners on Spotify. They have already passed The Rolling Stones, making them one of the 20 most popular bands by listening figures. Not what a journalist says we should like, but what we choose to listen to. Toto still has history that has yet to be written. Thank you for sharing this fantastic concert.
