      The original MX5 engine is a cast iron block and weighs a good bit, I'm not sure what V6 they used but it's probably all aluminium, so its possible the weight of the bigger engine isn't too far off the original.

    Looked like the Rx7 was struggling for front end grip in comparison to the mx5. Very clearly pushing wide in lot of the corners where the MX5 could hold the proper line. It looked like it was going to disappear at the start as well, and then the MX5 pulled it back in.

      Not sure if that one has the stock ABS or not but older FD ABS is only 3 channels and the modulation is slow. Also with a FD if you come in too hot, lifting makes the rear come around with the slightest provocation.

    I never thought I'd see a well tuned and driven Rx7 get hustled like that at the ring. My man has built something special here. Definitely agree with other folk tho, the Rx needs more tyre and maybe a bit stiffer with more aero and she's gone!

  • @davidnelson2370
    @davidnelson2370 5 лет назад +10

    Sidiras's laptime would be definitely quicker while also taking less risk. Much more middling lines and less track needed to get the job done. Car or driver? I'm not sure, but the MX-5 definitely has better stability and power delivery characteristics. Definitely the 'easier' car to drive; while acknowledging neither of them is especially "easy". Great lap and great driving by both. (Also passing traffic into Metzgesfeld; why do they only ever 'see' the first car??)

    • @OneLapHeroes
      @OneLapHeroes  5 лет назад +1

      David some questions might be answered when we release two separate laps (RX-7 alone and MX-5 alone). They are completely different in the way each makes it time around the track (and driver style is also quite different).

    • @Flyingdutchy33
      @Flyingdutchy33 5 лет назад

      It definitly seemed as though the 7 was set up too stiff. That car was bouncing so bad that this video should have come with an epilepsy warning. HOWEVER. It was quite telling how at the end when the 911 came in, the gap between the mx5 and the rx7 increased alarmingly quick. I'm guessing the 7 held back the entire lap until the Porsche showed up.
      But man, that stiffness. I bet the driver is even missing some tooth fillings after that lap.

    • @OneLapHeroes
      @OneLapHeroes  5 лет назад

      @@Flyingdutchy33 exactly the opposite on both counts. The 'strange' handling characteristics was from the lack of any sort of damping from the shocks. More specifically the driver said the shocks (and car) behavior would change the moment they got some heat sometimes even within just one lap. Something completely reasonable since the car is on old stock shocks.
      Same for the pace, MX-5 is considerable faster overall and was holding pace the whole lap and just backed off when the Porsche came. It is just the fact that there is ~100 hp more to the RX-7 and ~200 hp more to the GT3 RS so in a single straight it might look that they disappear. The MX-5 makes the ground back in the next braking zone/corner.

    • @Flyingdutchy33

    As cool as the MX-5 is, the fact that the FD actually has a cage makes it the better car. But I guess that's just my opinion, let Kostas tell you why the MX-5 doesn't need one as it's "just a road car", as you can clearly see in this video :P

    • @NippyMoto
      @NippyMoto 5 лет назад +1

      I mean considering that full cages are extremely dangerous on the street there is enough reason not to run haha. However half cage (roll bar) is enough for most MX5s and still remains safe for both street and track while providing adequate chassis rigidity.

    Is the hood spaced up for ricer reasons or to clear the V6 intake manifold? It does not help cooling, if that is why it was done.

    • @OneLapHeroes
      @OneLapHeroes  5 лет назад +3

      Although the beard looks like a ricer we believe he did it mainly for intake manifold clearance reasons.

    • @GlassTopRX7
      @GlassTopRX7 5 лет назад

      Well it's running the stock wheels so they are 16's and they don't look far off from the 225\50 size. If you roll the lips with the correct offsets you tuck 295's all the way around if you want. I run 18's with 285's 30 rear and 265 35's up front.

    • @big-R
      @big-R 5 лет назад

      @@GlassTopRX7 Good point, I see the stock wheels now... so maximum a 245 tread width. I ran 315 in the back (in my profile pic) and 295 in the front with rolled lips, but I think 285 on all 4 is more optimal because I could go another 1-2 centimeters lower with those. But either way, FD 225-245 quite small for a track FD.

    • @GlassTopRX7
      @GlassTopRX7 5 лет назад

      @@big-R For me I'm not willing to flare the fenders and my car is slightly lowered so they had to tuck with no rubbing.
      The difference in grip is significant though with that big of a change. I still recall what it was like going from the 225 to the wider widths. It was like driving another car, one that loved to give Newton and his laws the finger.
