  • Today, let's make a teardown of an LED torch with a built in insect zapper from Lidl. The schematic is completely crazy.

    Just an FYI, the LED is a 5x5mm Lumen Pioneer Opto LHP 5050 LHP5-2. Fairly decent quality copy of a Cree XPH50.2. Gives about 1000+lm at 9W power. Torch probably 2k+ lm at max.
    EDIT: maybe it is actually the smaller 3535 LPF3AW which clocks in at the 250lm quoted...

Some mosquitos are coming in while it uses a small classical white neon tube as light source. When they touch the grid they literally explode, so the question of having them permanently arcing does not apply ;-)

    To me, it looks like the circuit has a protection that stops the oscillator if high current is detected on the electrodes for a period of time. The reason the DC current goes up is likely due to a DC current running through the primary instead of switching it. It then resets after a period of time and keeps working again. Most likely it is deliberate to help protect.

    I guess the bad connection on the multiplier it´s just a manufacture error, looking at the board, everything points out that the output should be on the bigger cap (3Vp with bleeder resistor) as you correctly connected later. The voltage on this devices are 1500 to 3000v so it´s always better to test it with some high voltage high value series resistor to avoid killing your multimeter (I talk from the experiencie).

    The output stage is using a voltage multiplier circuit. It takes AC input and outputs DC at n times the peak AC input voltage where n is the number of capacitors used. The voltage across each capacitor always remains at peak voltage of ac input only. Remember those negative ion generators... those devices use a voltage multiplier circuit. • @vptech9861
      @vptech9861 4 года назад +1

      The transformer removes any DC component at its output voltage. The unavoidable DC component of the input voltage (due to this driving mode) just produce heat dissipation in the primary winding and only the peak to peak current produces induction. So even if the output AC voltage can be not symmetrical (for instance a short positive strong spike and a wide negative weak spike) its average DC value will be zero.

    Why In Many Pcb board resisters and capacitors are missing like the led pcb you opened

    • @Conservator.
      @Conservator. 4 года назад +2

      In this case the complete circuit was implemented on another board probably for better cooling. They still needed the smal board just to connect everything.
      Sometimes a single board can be used for a standard and a ‘deluxe’ version of a product. In that case the standard version just misses the components needed for the extra functions of the deluxe type.
      Sometimes there are small changes made to a product. Either just to cut some costs or to improve/correct something. I once noticed that on a later version of an amplifier several high wattage resisters were moved from the PCB to a heat sink. It was definitely an improvement as older boards were slightly burned around those resisters.
      Hope this helps

    Anyone care to speculate about the logistics of LIDL products. Who is the go between/middle man who picks the Chinese products they rebrand and import? Does LIDL do this in house, or useone or miltiple companies to "refer" them halfway decent Chinese products to stock? They certainly don't design/ have other design brand new products from scratch no? Like ordering from one big Chinese catalogue no?

    • @mfbfreak
      @mfbfreak 4 года назад +8

      I worked at a european competitor, who sold on occasion exactly the same products as Lidl did, with a different brand name on it.
      We often worked directly with chinese manufacturers. I think 50% was from euro suppliers, 50% directly from china.
      You typically go to a trade show. There you meet various manufacturers, and wholesale companies, and get an impression of the stuff they sell.
      Once you have some knowledge about what's on the market and which manufacturers have it, you can select stuff on the website/catalog of those manufacturers.
      We'd make sure that the products meet the standards WE want it to meet. For instance, we'd get salt water spray tests done to make sure the product is rust proof. Sometimes this meant the manufacturer needed to modify their products, sometimes it meant finding another one.
      Sometimes we wanted an extra feature, and got it built into the product if the manufacturer could do that. But the products as a whole are designed by the manufacturer.
      For smaller batches, buying at a chinese wholesale company was also possible. For stuff that we needed quickly, we'd buy at a european wholesale/reseller. Of course, that doesn't offer any customisation options, and you risk selling the same product as your competitors. Often you wanna make sure that you're at least slightly different than what they sell.
      Occasionally we'd start out with an european wholesale, and if sales were high enough, we'd eventually switch over to finding the manufacturer, or a manufacturer of a similar product, and then importing the stuff ourselves.
      Safety tests and CE declarations were handled by a third party.
      Imho, importing stuff from china is fine for simple stuff, but for anything that might need aftersales service, it is really annoying. The suppliers are often extremely friendly and cooperative, but it is still such a hassle to get spare parts (takes months). In the mean time, as a store, you'll have to refund the customer and that can lose you a lot of money.

      Their distribution partners are Kompernass, Germany www.kompernass.com , and Digi-Tech GmbH digi-tech-gmbh.com/produkte/wetterstationen. I've just bought their triple external sensor weather station from Lidl yesterday. It's OK, but has problems. The weather station I bought from them 11 years ago still works perfectly, and the remote sensors are perfectly waterproof with O-rings everywhere. This one has no seals, it just relying on gravity to avoid water ingress, it has open holes on the back, also the battery compartment is not sealed, and I can see the edge of the board through it... The sensors are IPX4 rated, but I'm quite sure a thunderstrom can find its way into it. Even the manual suggest to put it in covered outside areas, like a balcony, but that won't give you an accurate outside temperature then. The old one can be submerged into water! I used to hang it on a tree, and it's still fine after 11 years.
      My other complaint on new the weather station that it's wall mountable, but not... All the buttons are on the back side, so you can't turn on the backlight nor read the min/max temp/humidity values if you hang it on the wall. If the 3 years warranty expires, I will duplicate those buttons on its side.
      I think they're usually not just rebrand stuff, but get them custom designed for themselves, probably not by themselves, but by the Chinese manufacturer. They do the rebranding mainly for the simplest stuff, like torches, hand tools, etc. Yesterday in the shop I've seen an announcement that they've sent back a batch of rechargeable car vacuum cleaners to the manufacturer because it did not met their quality requirement.
      1-2 years ago they've made a recall on a wall lamp, that was supposed to be double insulated, and it was, but there was a chrome color version which had actual chrome plating on the plastic housing which compromised the double insulation.
      I remember the recall of some lithium battery operated stuff a while ago, I don't remember exacltly what was it (maybe it was a vacuum cleaner, or a tennis racket style bug zapper), but there were issues with the charging circuitry, which posed a risk of fire.
      So they are not careless about quality and safety.

    Hello +DiodeGoneWild! Your videos are very refreshing to watch compared to other videos on RUclips.
    May I suggest an idea for a quick video? I was thinking of comparing fake components, i. e. from ebay, to genuine ones...I have nothing to send, sorry... Looking forward to it!

      @@drobotk yeah... and maybe some ICs and transistors. I was thinking he'd do some performance tests on them. I also wanted to find out where he got those TESLA capacitors and other vintage components
