    Awesomeness galore. Great to see a shout out for the little T3i. My first "real camera" was a used T3i from a pawn shop years ago. A GREAT starter DSLR, especially for the price. I think it's best to start on a camera WITHOUT a touchscreen to help the operation and handling get burned into your muscle memory. Not that I don't love my touchscreen now! Like my very first car, I have fond memories of the T3i, even if it wasn't the fanciest thing on the road.

    Tony and Chelsea, here are my recommendations:
    Level 1: D3300 / D3400
    Level 2: Canon t7i
    Level 3: D750 with kit lens and perhaps a 2x teleconverter
    Level 4: D850 - wait till it comes out!

    one thing that is clearly understated when talking about the marvels of mirrorless cameras when shooting videos is the difficulty of keeping their sensor clean. This is vital, since every time a lens is changed with another there is a high risk of dusk landing on the sensor, because the sensor is not protected by the mirror (as in the DSRL world), and as such is exposed to outside agents. There is no easy solution to this issue, because even to a close inspection to the sensor, dust can be difficult to be scanned and removed, with the result of possible visible artifacts on the highlights of a shot that can be vastely ruined. Another thing to keep in mind when judging mirrorless cameras like Sony A7 series, is that their native optics are electronic. This means that if a follow focus is needed for precise focus, you can't use it. Tracking focus in manual mode is different every and each time, and can't be repeated the same way twice in a row. DUST and MANUAL FOCUS TRACKING are issues that are easily dealt with in the DSRL world.

      @morganm3362 8 лет назад

      Antonio PX1 I believe some of Sony's new g-master lenses have slightly improved focusing. It's still all electronic so you can't exactly make marks on a follow-focus, but it doesn't seem to have that effect where the speed you turn the focus determines how far you've turned it as well.

    Yes! What a great video. As the resident gear nerd in the family my entire Thanksgiving was spent getting asked "What Camera Should We Get" from everyone in my family. I already send everyone that asks me that to your channel but now I can send them straight to this specific video. I would absolutely love to see a yearly or bi-yearly version this video. BTW I've found parents like the idea of buying your book for their photo-obsessed kid for Christmas. I always recommend SDP as a stocking stuffer.

    I'm very happy to see the a6000 on the list here since that's the camera I decided on a year ago when wanting to more properly get into photography. Especially since I find that landscape is what I enjoy shooting the most, though I didn't know that when I got the camera. The first extra lens I've also got for it is the Sigma 30mm F1.4 Contemporary DC DN. It might not be a typical landscape lens, but it's appears to be the most affordable fast and sharp lens you can get for the system.

    You can buy the perfect starter drones (Phantom 3 Professional, the Standard sucks) on eBay around $600-$700 kits. These drones have 4K video recording with a 14 MP camera, 3 axis stabilization gimbal, smart battery system, lightbridge (3 mile range), onscreen exposure controls, and safe "return to home" feature.

    nikon d750 - not far from 7d mark ii in price but full frame. Paired with nikkor 24-120mm f4 vr (normally priced around $1000) you get a pretty good deal, only $2300 for camera + lens and it's a great lens. Should be a beast combination and price may go even lower on large sales

    Hi,
    First of all love the information you two give out it's been so helpful learning about photography for me.
    I'm a field ecologist/zoologist/student in Australia and I travel to a diverse set of climactic conditions from rainforest to deserts and get to see some pretty amazing wildlife as a result. The problem is I don't have much of a budget, I would like to ask as someone on a budget who would like to begin taking wildlife, night sky photos, and landscapes how a non-weather sealed camera (I've been interested in the Canon 750d) might hold up against the elements of heat, dust, and humidity. I don't have any intentions of operating the camera and lenses in rain, extreme heat or other adverse weather.
    Cheers

    I opine the following: so only 1 Pentax recommended and that a full-frame camera, showing as about $2,234 but that might be body only. I saw a video on the new K70 where the quality of the video looked excellent, perhaps you could review it. I realise frame rate affects use for sports, but for outdoor photography surely weatherproofing is a plus and with Pentax comes image stabilisation in the body. It would be very interesting if you do a weatherproof cameras review. I realise you did a great waterproof ie underwater video, and my compact Fuji works well there and also in rain. Before I bought my Pentax K-S2 after watching your review and others, I was going for a Canon but was unaware whether they did weatherproof.

    Nice recommendations Tony, pretty well covers just about every use case out there. I have a couple D800E's but have not upgraded to the D810 -- I'll skip that and see what comes next. My last flagship camera, the Canon 1DsM2 lasted me from 2004 to 2012 so I expect to go to about 2020 with the D800E's. Also have the Inspire 1 Pro and have an order for the Phantom 4 Pro. The Inspire 2 with the X5S camera is tempting but I'll skip the 2 and probably wait for the 3. The Phantom 4 Pro with higher bit rate and nearly 30 minute flight times may be used more than the I1 Pro.

    Sry, but Imho the Fuji XT2 and the XF16-55 F2.8 isnt the best system for stills and video because it isnt stabilised and the XT2 also gets very hot when shooting 4k at 30p for longer than ten minutes.
    I think that the new MFT systems are doing a better overall job for video and stills.
    Only my opinion.

    I just got my first DSLR used from a pawn shop, I traded even for it. It was a Nikon D3100, I really like it, at first I thought it was broke because everything was blurred or had tons of noise but after your help I'm taking pretty nice photos from where I started " I bought 4 of your books." I also probably watched over 40 hours of RUclips vids about photography as well. My goal is to take photographs just cause I enjoy getting out and going places and this gives me an excuse to go and something to do once there, however I would love to be able to make some money on the side since the investment is so much. I don't want to be a full time photographer, I just would like to cover my expenses for the hobby. Should I stick with the 2 lens that came with the Nikon D3100 and move to a D810 for example or could I go ahead and get the DX lenses and then upgrade my body to a 5500, 7100, 7200 later.

    Factory refurbished sounds like a safe way to buy used, because they include a warranty. Canon USA Store states that they have a one year warranty on their refurbished cameras. I don't know the refurbished warranty policies of other brands. That sounds better than buying from some random person on ebay or craigslist. :-)

    Yes the Panasonic G7 is a great bargain for video, but the new G85 has image stabilization. Seems to me that if you're walking around somewhere on vacation that getting rid of hand-held jitters is really desirable, so while I think the G7 is a fantastic low price choice, I think you should have worked a camera with image stabilization into your higher level video suggestions (nothing against the GH4).

    Hi @Tony - I sold my Nikon 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR lens as I found the zoom-throw is rather long. It takes almost a 180-degree turn of the focus ring, to go from 200 to 500mm.
    This makes it far less suited for shooting birds in flight (BIF) and therefore I prefer using my 70-200mm f/2.8 VR II Nikon.
    The Nikkor 200-500 is still a fantastic lens, especially for the price. Made in China - yes, but optically rather great. Ideal for stationary wild-life, large beasts etc.
    Should I look at getting a 1.4x/2x Teleconverter instead for my 70-200 Nikkor? Thanks!

    A word of caution on any DJI product.
    Set your iPad, iPhone or Android devise so that you control if or when the firmware/software is up dated. DJI is famous for using their customers as BETA testers.
    DJI doesn't fully disclose what the update entails or what functionality may be effected.
    I was a DJI P3Pro user. Many instances of firmware tweeks only to brick units requiring the shipment back to DJI for repair.
    Last thing with DJI, if you purchase direct, the promised date for delivery is bogus. If the item is in demand, the promised ship date will be off by weeks or months. Poor communications.
    When their drones fly, they can be great. If you get a fly-a-way, keep any and all files to pursue full replacement not the 40-50% off they offer.

  • @DynamixWarePro

    What about M4/3 for starting out into wildlife photography and maybe videos as well? It could cost quite a bit less than having an APS-C or FF camera with a long enough lens to get close to wildlife. I know the DOF, low light, dynamic range and maybe auto focus if you want to track a moving subject, may not be as good on a M4/3 camera compared to an APS-C or FF but the crop does make it useful for wildlife.
    Maybe a Panasonic GH4/G80/G7 and either a Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmar 100-400 mm f/4.0-6.3 ASPH. POWER O.I.S. lens or if you have a bit more of a budget, a Speedbooster and a Tamron 150-600mm for a much longer focal length, although I don't know if the sharpness would be as good as using the Leica on an M4/3 body. I have a GH4 and use it for bird photography and videos and find the crop quite useful, even if it would be better with more dynamic range and better low light capabilities, but for starting out, its quite good if you know how to work around those issues and the compact size of the camera and lenses is also good compared to the much larger ASP-C or FF equivalent lenses.

    • @simianinc
      @simianinc 8 лет назад

      What lens do you use? I have the Panasonic 100-300mm, and frankly, I'm not that impressed. The GH4 has ok tracking, but it's really not up with the D500 or 7D Mk II - I'm hoping the GH5 is an improvement. Would love to try the 100-400mm, but hard for me to justify the cost for the small amount of wildlife I do. Im, not sure I would be happy with the isolation of f6.3, but I'd want to test.

    • @DynamixWarePro
      @DynamixWarePro 8 лет назад

      simianinc I currently use the 100-300mm lens but I agree its not the sharpest lens and DXOMark only rates it as 5MP and quality is lower at 300mm. I would have looked at a better lens at the time I got it, but it was the only one I saw with that focal length with stabilisation. I was thinking of getting the Leica lens, but decided to hold off and save my money and look at getting a new camera next year and want to see how the GH5 is when its released next year, and see if its enough of an improvement in auto focus, has a bit better low light and more dynamic range and more accurate skin tones over the GH4, before deciding anything as I mostly use my GH4 for making wildlife videos and some wildlife photography.

    As I idea for a new video the older Canon and Nikon Pro body's such as the 1d iii and 1d iv are now incredibly cheap you can get a 1d iii for less than a 7d ii with many of the pro body benefits of course they have lower megapixel count but for a intermediate or semi-pro they are a great choice I have the 1d iii and it's a great camera for the money and forces you to get out of auto and be creative.

    I got a Sony A77 Mk1 w/ a Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 II APO DG HSM EX (_catchy name no?_) for $1,035 for my first* camera. I was lucky in that both body and lens were in better condition than described.
    *I've used a Rebel T3i for a class before.

    Hi Tony, I am deciding to buy either SONY A7ii or FUJI X-T2 with kit lenses. I'm gonna do stills and videos, mostly for travelling. They are at the same price range and I presume image quality is better in the sony, but Fuji has 4k and better AF and burst. What do you think about it? Please let me know!

    Great video! Lots of good recommendations. I'm curious if you ever posted a review of the Nikon 200-500? I'm looking at getting a super tele for trying out wildlife on my d7100 and am curious how it compares to the tamron 150-600 gen1 or gen2. A used gen1 tamron is tempting price-wise as long as it's close in quality.
    Thanks for all the amazing content!

    d3300 18-105 vs d5300 18-55 vs olympus e-m10 (all at the same price) - amateur photography. At the begining i am not planning to buy lenses i will stick to the kit. Photos of kids, portaits(blurred background), landscapes etc.Which of those 3 would be the best choice ? I cant make up my mind. Please help.

    Always enjoy watching your guys... What about the 5D Mark III for portrait shots? I've notice you've favored the Nikon for the higher grade quality setups. Thank you in advance for your reply. I'm currently using Canon 7D & 60D with kits lenses... looking to upgrade lenses.

    I have asked this before, but I'll try again
    What would you recommend for starting out with real estate/interior photography?
    I'm thinking best to go with full frame or not? Best wide angle lenses and tilt shift lenses.
    And best wifi control, flash system.
    Thank you. Keep up the good work

    Interested in what your thoughts are on the Nikon D7100 and what lenses you'd recommend that would work well with this body. I currently have a Nikon 50 f1.4 and the Nikon 18-200, which is my go to lens primarily because it's so versatile and adaptable. Most of my photos are of pets, landscapes and aircraft.
    Do you think the Tamron SP 70-200 is better enough to ditch my Nikon 18-200? Or would you suggest adding the Nikon 200-500 lens?

    I would add to wildlife with the system that I'm using and am getting great results with (though it is indeed frustrating when you reach the limits of your gear) which is the canon t5i with the canon 55-250 used for about $675

      I've gotten very close to deer, great blue herons, blue jays, and owls with great results. I will admit I often reach limits. I was once in front of a bald eagle but even being directly under the tree I couldn't get close enough because it was too high up. Also, ISO performance is not grear

      +Tony & Chelsea Northrup Yeah, the lenses are a weakness. They don't have many good lenses, but the Sony 50mm F1.8, Sony 18-105mm F4, and the Sigma 30mm F1.4 are pretty good. The Sigma is the sharpest Sony E-Mount lens on DXOMark, and it's also the fastest, with a T-Stop of 1.8.

    Hey, Tony and Chelsea! I have really enjoyed the videos. I am wanting to get into video/photography/vlogging as I am stepping up from my iphone. I plan on doing some landscape and sport video/photo taking mostly for an automotive blog I am running. The vlogging I plan on just doing for fun and for the blog. Any suggestions as far as cameras are concerned? I have been looking at Canon t6s/70D, Panasonic G85/GH4, and the Sony A6300. They are all in my price range in the used section. Thanks!

    Thanks for the info! I'm sort of an inbetweener where, for now, I mostly do street photography in NYC. (Cityscapes, some candid portraits, some dof shots, etc). I currently have a Canon 60D and a few lenses, but I'm wanting to step up into some higher picture quality, mostly for low light. The crop sensor is just a bit too noisy for me! I'm contemplating waiting for the not-yet-confirmed 6D mark ii, or maybe even a 6D mark I. But I'm also wondering if I should just sell everything and go Nikon ha. (Though the idea of trying to sell everything I own sounds like such a pain in the ass.) Likely don't want to spend more than $2k all told. Thoughts?

    You talked about sony a6000 even in your previous videos, I like it too. Currently I'm using a canon eos 1200d with both of its kit lenses and now I find myself to expand my photography skills. I'm interested in landscape mostly but others are also included starting from low light, long exposure to astrophotography. I need some recommendations on this, both about the cameras and the lenses' comaptibility and usability. Waiting for your suggestions......

    Lot of editing problems. The last third of the video is about flying camera systems, but the screen shows handheld cameras. And what's with no comments from the producer here? Lastly, I would have loved to hear what he thinks about the Sony A6000/6300/6500.

    Thanks for the video. What Canon body would you recommend for commercial photography? Currently looking to upgrade from a heavily used 5DMIII. Shoot 95% product and portrait/lifestyle so the 5Ds and 5DsR are tempting given the large print size, crop potential and increased detail. However with the R I'm concerned with moire from patterns or fabric textures. Also read about needing slightly faster shutters to avoid blur do to high MP count. The 5DMIV looks to have a slight dynamic range edge over the 5Ds/r models and some additional upgrades to AF, touchscreen, etc. 30MP is a nice bump and will add some more crop ability over the 5DMIII however I'm wondering if one of the other models makes more sense or the 5DMIV updates are enough. Thoughts? And thank you!

    • @mauinight1999
      @mauinight1999 8 лет назад

      I am sorry that you feel that way. However, it was packed with new features, hit the right mega pixel count, updated the focusing system (both live view and viewfinder), new shutter system, better dynamic range on par with the best of them, touch screen menu and focus, GPS, and NFC camera control so no need for tilt screen, just to name a few. I shoot real estate mostly, so video is not my main concern. I do understand that the 4K is a bit clumbersome but you still have if if you really wanted it. So, a very good all around camera.

    Hi Tony, quick question. Why the Nikon recommendation for the D810 + 70-200mm f/2.8 for portrait? Been watching a lot of your previous videos and you have a strong preference to the Canon 70-200mm because it has minimal focus breathing. Great, informative videos. I really appreciate your work and technical detail you provide.

      The new Nikon 70-200 ED really improves the focus breathing. It's the G that breathes so bad.

    HELP ME & I'LL BUY YOUR BOOKS lol..If you had to choose an all around camera for a beginner with around $800 to spend for a variety of shooting, just general purpose some video, portraits, landscape, hiking, travel, ect. I would start with kit lens and upgrade as I go & can afford it, definitely have to keep lens cost in mind down the road... looking at the Canon t6i, nikon d5500/d5600, Sony a6000, Lumix G7...also very open to another suggestion... THANKS! You & Chelsea make great helpful, informative vids.
