I just texted this to the lead singer and the drummer haha. I've done web work for them and their members even to this day.
Also, in regards to your question "what is emo?" that's a simple question with a complicated answer. What you need to understand about it is that there were various waves of emo. It's easy to think about it similar to the metal genre. In the 70s and 80s you had your heavy metal pioneers like Black Sabbath, Zeppelin, etc. You can think of 90s post-hardcore bands like Sunny Day, Texas is the Reason, and tangentially Hum in that era of emo. Sometime in the early to mid 2000's the music industry caught wind of it's rising popularity and you got a sort of post commercial flavor of "Emo" that was much more glam, similar to how hair metal was born with LA bands like with Poison and LA Guns. This is how pop-punk bands of the mid 2000's are under the umbrella term "Emo". Some bands were even able to successfully cross from one wave to the next like Jimmy Eat World did. Just like "Metal", "Emo" is an umbrella term for many different styles. This is partly due to commercialization turning the term "Emo" into a marketing buzzword. The result is gatekeepers on both sides endlessly debating what "real Emo" is to this day. Hope that helps.

emo does have waves, it started in the 80s as an offshoot of hardcore punk in dc.
whereas bad brains, minor threat and black flag were playing hardcore punk, bands like rites of spring, embrace, and one last wish were bringing a more introspective and more heartfelt approach to the lyrics while still being true to the hardcore sound.
sunny day real estate were the pioneers of midwest emo despite being from washington and getting on sub pop which was the label nirvana was on. emo was given to bands like paramore, mcr, taking back sunday, the used, panic at the disco because that's just how things go. good stuff all around, diary is an incredible album

Glad to see you finally got to this one. Emo’s a tricky genre because it’s been around so long and has been adopted by many disparate scenes. In my mind, emo is a subcategory of post-hardcore, but some bands swing a little closer to indie rock and alternative, some swing closer to harsh grind and hardcore punk, and by the end of the 90s it became associated with a type of moody pop-punk. Here’s a list of songs your journey could take you that would encompass all of the above listed styles.
    Original “emotive” hardcore:
Rites of Spring - Drink Deep
    Native Nod - Crossings
Portraits of Past - Bang yr Head
    Post-emo style melodic alt rock:
The Promise Ring - Red and Blue Jeans
    Christie Front Drive - 4010
Texas is the Reason - Back to the Left
    Post-emo pop-punk:
    Get Up Kids - Holiday
Saves the Day - At Your Funeral
    My Chemical Romance - Helena
Emo “revival” (new that sounds like 90s era):
    Adventures - Heavenly
The Hotelier - Your Deep Rest
    La Dispute - King Park

This brings me back to a winter in 95/96 as a freshman in hs listening to this on the ride to school. On a winter day being a young punk rock kid.

I love this song, and have since I first heard it around age 11 or 12. There is something about the layers, the arrangements, the oppressive, driving guitar tone, this song has always made me feel this intense melancholy but like, in a good way

Seeing these guys live several times back when this came out was amazing. The dynamic changes from the soft to the loud portions was so amazing and like an explosion of sound.

Ok, I could not pass this by without commenting. Brings me back to my skateboarding days. Your one cool dude for reviewing this one. Love Sunny Day, while you're in the mood, I would recommend checking out Seaweed next, anything from their Despised or Weak albums, 91 and 92. Keep it up!

So cool to see you reacting to them, Sunny Day is my favorite band of all time. I think every song they've ever made is amazing. Me and my friends drove 6 hours to go see them a couple days ago and the show was fantastic. Its their first tour back in 12 years. I'm not sure where you're located but if you have a chance to go see them live I think you'll love it. Great video, hope to see more Sunny Day on your channel✌

I have posted on a couple of your videos that you should do any song from the album “return of the frog queen” which is Jeremy enigk’s first solo album. I have tried to shoehorn that recommendation into the comments on a couple of your videos. But this time it actually makes sense! You must listen to return of the frog queen. It is a perfect album. And I just know you will love it cuz of all the orchestration. So many layers of melody. And his voice is so powerful.

YES! this is what I'm talking about. The first track of Sunny Day's that I'd recommend (especially since you love *amazing* bass) is *Snibe* off their album The Rising Tide, but nearly all of their albums and everything they've released are _incredible._ ..I also second others suggestions in the comments for more SDRE: *Pillars* , *100 Million* , but also *Seven* and *Guitar and Video Games*
...just now I literally had to _stop_ myself from diving headlong back into SDRE and Jeremy Enigk's continued stuff. Back during the beginning months of lockdown, Jeremy revisted some of SDRE's amazing songs, but just did them casually in a room by himself acoustically + a mic for vox and posted 'em on his modest, personal youtube channel.
Jeremy Enigk's got side projects that're *REALLY* good too like The Fire Theft w/ the song *Chain* ...and then his solo works, particularly his absolutely *gorgeous* song: *World Waits* ..all of it's *LOVELY* _hauntingly_ beautiful stuff❣
Thank you Geebz for being one of the very few to breach this "hidden treasure" of music for reactions🫂

One of my fav bands. You continue to cover the ones i love. Thanks
Also, cool aside, bassist is Nate Mendel. Left sunny Day in 96 to join a lesser known band at the time... Foo fighters.
