Do NOT give up on having your back up plan-plus have back ups for your back ups! Things ARE getting worse, and will continue the downward spiral!! PREP, PREPARE AND MOST OF ALL PRAY!!
You said it 100% agree - Coastal Washington State here - I keep watching and researching the 'things'.... I pray daily for something to give. I am working on back up number 4 - but, my greatest concern is the power grid. Here in WA they have outlawed wood, natural gas and propane home heating and cooking systems - we have been forced to be 'green' on all new construction since 2021 (my house is a 2021 build) and it SUCKS. Just saying. I fear every winter that power will go - I don't have a generator because to be honest I don't know how to connect it to my house nor how to use one and all of the 'professional helper types' are a bunch of price gouging thieves. They immediately see its just me and boom price triples. Note to all the ladies - make sure to learn as much as you can about everything before life changes - I lost my husband to cancer in 2017 and its been a truly real struggle. People no longer care - if they ever did or do - count your blessings. May everyone stay blessed... and pray, pray, pray.
People in Switzerland leave their root veggies in the ground in winter.....They harvest in the snow....The veggies are killer good....Root veggies are great in cold climates...Think "Borsch" in Russia.....Brassicas can survie the cold ,because of their rubbery cell walls, and low water content.....They don't freeze and die......They are perrenials.....It is awesome...I have some 3 year old kale....
Yes, 6 months put up. Freezers full, canning, and store bought canned. All the basics, flour, sugar, beans, rice, yeast, spices, herbs. Always rotating!
We were still on ration books, shortages, and need after WW2 up until the mid 1950s. People kept saying, "Use everything twice" which really was a way of saying use everything as many times as you could and use junk if you can. If you can't use it, pass it on or send it in so it can be recycled. Saving, storing, and reusing has been needed many times since then. In 80+ years, I have seen the need many times. Even with a good job, there were times the planning ahead paid for itself. Today I say, 1.) Re-use, 2.) Repair/Restore, 3.) Repurpose/Upcycle, 4.) Recycle 5.) Greencycle
You are a wise mama to think about building your garden skills in preparation for the unknown. Meanwhile, you can enjoy these fresh veggies as an addition to your meals and snacks. God bless!
I have learned to not wash potatoes until you are ready to use them. They will last longer. You never seem to have tomatoes but two things I have learned about them is to NEVER refrigerate them. They lose a compound that takes the flavor away which will never come back. Also they ripen from the inside. I am single and handicapped so I have to be prepared, canned goods, dry beans, pasta, pantry items plus I am a cooker so my freezer is full. A root cellar is how my grandparents took care of their garden vegetables. We got to raid the garden and root cellar. Sadly they have all been gone many years but the memories will never die.
Bert... California is going down hill very fast... "SMASH & GRABS" are the new thing in broad daylight... Some robbers are even pistol whipping store owners... I believe we are in "The last days "... I think this breaks the heart of Our HEAVENLY FATHER 🥺💔 OLIVIA is doing very... well with walking & starting to talk... Your gardening & supplying healthy fresh vegetables for your Beautiful Family... Hugs & Blessings Always Jessica, Bert, Audrey, Evelyn, Garrett, Olivia & Kasner 🙏❤️💙💖💖💙💖🧸🐕🤗✝️
We are blessed to have a huge unfinished basement in Wisconsin. I turned it into a store with all shelf stable and freeze dried foods. We also have a chest freezer and extra refrigerator/freezer in the basement. All that we have and continue to stock up on will bless us or bless others in the future. Along with all the foods & beverages, we have numerous prepping supplies too. We have been preppers since 2008 with a big focus on living with NO electricity. Love following your beautiful family...💝
We are in FL, there is a hurricane season every year. It can be brutal. We take nothing for granted! We don't wait to prepare , it is a way of life. I don't have a vegetable garden but seeing you doing it is inspiring. Thank you.
Keep the backup plan. Always be prepared like Joseph 7 good years 7 lean years then can help others and take care of family and friends. Thanks love your family and videos from indiana.
Awesome crop guys. Jessica your are incredible with everything you do. You are a really great example to your children, you too Bert. I love how it's now Garrett's turn to learn how to drive and bring the wood in. In your circumstances in Alaska, your children need to be taught to be self-sufficient also and as their parents, you have been doing an incredible job. I greatly admire both of you.
Never stop being prepared and having back up plans. Around here, I learned from my Mom and Dad on how to raise a garden. I learned how to prepare the land, how to plant the crop, how to and when to harvest. Beyond that, I learned what to freeze and what to can. BTW, I am extremely jealous of your carrots. I've never had carrots that get beyond a pencil size! I can Green beans, as a matter of fact, I am still eating on Green beans that I canned back in 2016! Not sure how it would work there, as opposed to here (foothills of North Carolina) but cabbage, to store it, pull full head of cabbage up, leave all leaves on it, dig a hole, and put it into the hole upside down with the root sticking up. When you want cabbage, just go pull it up, clean off the outer leaves it has little to no green left to it, it's all white and very crisp. Corn, we canned and freeze, potatoes, Dad would clean off the dirt, just letting the dirt dry and then rub it off. Put down a layer of lime(the powder type) lay out potatoes, cover and repeat until all are covered. The next year, use the lime for your garden. , Some beans, some peas, we dried. So many new ways to preserve foods dehydrating, freeze drying, add to the old ways, you never go with out. Meats wee also grown, We raised pigs, my uncle had cows, so every year we got beef from him, and he got pork from us. We also had chickens, and rabbits,(which both are VERY easy to raise, and pretty cheap too). As far as back ups, Power... the list would go from the main way to get power to the back up(s). Like the electric Company, back up Gen, opening curtains, oil lamps and candles for light. Now days add in some degree of solar into the mix. Heat... Propane, or oil kerosene furnace, wood stove or wood furnace, and extra quilts and blankets. It's all easy to figure out, just make a list as to what you use/need on a day to day or week to week or month to month basis, and come up with different ways to obtain it all. SO YES!! Keep preparing, and working toward self sufficient life style. Yes, it's work, but yes, you can do it. And most of all, keep the kids involved too. It works! I am a kid of 61 that remembers all of what my parents taught me.
Jessica and Bert what an amazing garden. Great job seeing everyone pitching in and helping out. Olivia great job walking. Can't believe she's almost one.
I started a very small garden this yea r cantaloup/ honeydew/ peppers letuce Radishes strawberries raspberries. Blueberries red currents berries think that’s it not much but will be doing a bigger and better garden next yr now that I know I can do it lol I love watching all grow ❤ we live in Kelowna bc Canada 🇨🇦 forgot cucumbers and cherry tomatoes lol
Keep preparing. The world is a scary place. My family and I have been prepping for several years. I started because we have my dad at home who's on hospice, and I want to be sure he has all his needs met. I do believe we are at the end times, and prayerfully, Jesus comes soon. I always enjoy your videos and am simply amazed at how well your garden did this year. I would love to make cabbage rolls with the size of your cabbages.
Oh, those little feet! She is the sweetest. My granddaughter (I raised her) just moved to Anchorage with her partner, her first time living anywhere but Idaho. So I'm devouring everything about Alaska - already bought her a Gardening in Alaska book. Your place is beautiful.
I started a prepper pantry during COVID. My husband thought I was crazy but now he’s the one making sure we rotate through certain things and keeps track of what we are low on.
You guys have a great climate for preserving veggies overwinter, even without electricity :D My mum grew up in the Alps, so although it's not as extreme as in North Pole, snowy season was also very long and growing season quite short (but VERY productive like yours!) They kept potatoes, turnips, carrots and apples in the dark cold cellar, and lasted all the way into April like this. You just need to be gentle handling them, and keep the space dark, cold, and dry, and carrots stay fresh a lot longer if kept in sand instead of piled up.
Back up plan is a must. We really never know. We’ve seen signs of things being less secure as in the past. I want to garden next year and can lots of things. Hubby is taking the commission check from his rental when he sells it to buy a generator for us.
The garden was so nice. Those carrots looked amazing. The potatoes brought back so many memories of years past with my grandparents. You are an amazing family. God Bless each one of you. ❤
We plant a pretty good-sized garden. I can beans and put corn in the freezer. We put anywhere between 200-500 ears of corn in the freezer each year! We are in our second year of storing potatoes and onions for winter use. I also made pickles for the first time this year!!
Your potatoes did really well this year! You should try sweet potatoes next year too. Carrots freeze so well. We just scrub them and cut in chunks , no need to peel them. Happy upcoming birthday to Olivia! She certainly looks like a Sommers!
it's hard to believe that olivia is almost one and walking . having a garden is a great way to save on the grocery bill . home grown veggies always taste better , plus you are teaching your kids a wonderful skill . you never know when you will need to grow vegetables to feed your family she is so blessed to have you and bert as her parents . she was a wonderful addition to your family
We know that we are not your typical subscribers, but seeing that we stopped in North Pole on our way to a RV rally with "RVing to Alaska" last summer, our hostess "Stacy" said that she is a veiwer and we started watching you and got hooked!! Thanks for the great insight on living in Alaska!
Now that is a lot of potatoes we try to prepare for winter because we can get up to 20. -25 feet of the White stuff we stock up on meet vegetables, dry products and we have two big generators pellet stove my husband buys a lot of the pellets in summer. I can't believe Olivia is almost 1 years old. Sending huge amount of love, hugs, and prayers always♥♥♥♥♥♥♥🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Three Cheers for Olivia how wonderful to see her walk so fast on the grass. Happy early birthday Olivia. That is one huge potato harvest. It sure seems that potatoes & carrots thrive growing in Alaska. Great team harvesting effort.
O’ the old Safeway. It’s making me homesick.Formally from North Pole, UAA and UAF alumni. I cannot believe that little girl is gonna be one years old already! Love the video! ❤
Hi somers family, yes garedening is the way to go if your able to. wow Olivia turning 1 next week thats totally awesome, keep working together all of you, your making a real difference in your childrens lives and those who are following you, love you all your awesome people.
Great garden.Your expectations were great.Great return.Keep on the path.I don't expect much improvement any time soon.We have to keep the faith.Take care.
I was so excited when I began to watch this and this song came on! You played it I think 2 Septembers ago as you drove down a highway amid yellow leaves on the birch trees. It gave me such a strange wistful feeling so I found it and write the lyrics down and memorized it! I will always think of your family and this song in Septembers!
Keep the back plan up. It can never hurt. Only you and your family can decide when u have enough. My thoughts u can never have enough cause u can always help others in need out.
Wow your garden did awesome! My daughter and I tried something different this year & planted tomatoes, potatoes, squash and cabbage in pots. We live in an apartment complex so we can't have a garden. It's been interesting to grow vegetables in flower pots. We have gotten some yellow cherry tomatoes and we dug one of our potatoes but those were a little bigger than a marble. It was trial and error this year. We know what to do next year to make it better. I was thrilled to even get anything out of it! I know we can grow our own vegetables if we couldn't go to a grocery store we will survive. It puts your mind at ease. Anyway thanks for sharing your harvest with us it's always a treat to see how big your produce gets and how much you guys get out of it. Great job!!!!
Jess your garden did GREAT! Such a good harvest, I couldn't believe the amount of potatoes you got. I'm looking forward to see how you decide to preserve everything. It looks like you'll have a good amount for your family for several months. I can imagine how excited you are, I am too. LOL Good luck with the next step.💕
We have a huge garden every year and we dehydrate, freeze, can and freeze dry it all. We have freezers that are full to the brim so this month of September we are buying nothing from the grocery store because in November we have a 1/2 a beef, a pig and 3 lambs going into our freezers…….your garden did really good 🤗
Oow soo cute see you all harvest. Defiantly trying to cultivate the skill of growing. I find that harvesting and clearing your patches helps clear your mind. Healthy living all round. If I could recommend something, don’t wash your potatoes. Take any big lumps of dirt off, let them dry and then give them one brush with your hands to take any other large amount of dirt off. I have found that potatoes that I don’t wash and let that small dusting of dirt cover them store better. Big hug to everyone ox
Keep on prepping and keep learning new skills to live off the land. Even if you never use it you at least have that piece of mind that if it does you are ready to go.
I got a great potato harvest too. I took the small potatoes and boiled until tender then placed in a greased fry pan and using a flat bottom glass smashed them and fried them for breakfast. No waste is my motto.
I’m thankful to live on a property owned by an awesome Christian family. They raise their own chickens, they fish, and have a garden similar to yours. So, I focus on non perishables.
I am a senior (74) and I garden, buy on sale, freeze dry garden harvest and sale items. I am in Minnesota and I can’t always shovel myself out if there is tons of snow but I will not go hungry.
Your harvest was a blessing. We have a green house. Lots of seeds in store. Gardening is a great skill. God is in control. Olivia is precious. And now she is on the run😂 Thanks for sharing❤
Oh sweet lil Olivia turning 1 already! Where has the time gone?😊 Jessica your garden really has provided for your family this year. Still can't get over the size of your cabbage heads.😮 Until the next video may God continue to Bless you and your family 🙏❤️😘
Hi guys! Yes continue prepping as much as you can.Things are not great. Shortages have begun to appear and store shelves have bare spots. Seems that pretty much everything is going downhill. It's getting harder to make ends meet. Prices seem to be going up with no end in sight. Folks are suffering financially due to costs going up and up. No soup lines or anything like that, so it's not that bad yet. Praying it doesn't come to that. God bless you all and keep praying for our country and the world. P.S. Can't believe how big Olivia is!. Garrett is a chip off the old block! 🙂 You had a beautiful harvest!! Congrats!!
Darn voles!! Glad they didn’t destroy too much and you got a great harvest even thought you had to pick early! I don’t think the world is getting better! I have a little storage but not enough! We live really close to grocery stores have everything Walmart, target, meijer, jewel/Safeway 5 min from our house.
Hello Somers Family... It really is such a pleasure to visit with you tonight and to see little Olivia walking 💖 Can't believe she's going to be 1. This year went by so fast here it is September already. Your garden turned out beautiful and gave you a good harvest of vegetables. I'd never heard of Voles before till my daughter found one in the yard cause we get Moles and field mice. Growing up we would go to my grandparents farm in Southern Ohio 4 hours away and there were no modern conveniences till late 60s. So I learned how to do a lot when you don't have things available and I've always tried to be prepared because of how I grew up. Keep on doing your backup plans. Its always better to be prepared. I'm 78 now so those lessons learned have come in handy at times. Where I live now I can't have a garden but wish I could. My friend laughs at me because I keep prepared. Bert you asked...The America I grew up in has completely changed and Not for the better I'm sad to say. I'm glad to see the way You and Jessica are raising your children...You'd not want to live in the lower 48 at all. I'm so glad my girls are grown 59-54 cause I'd definitely have a hard time letting them out in this world we live in today. Love the music🎶 Good things commin put your faith in me we got good things commin 🎶 I'm always thinking about being prepared cause that's how my parents and grandparents taught me in the 40s. I think a lot of people learned at least I hope they did when Covid hit and many were not prepared and they were without. Well its late Good Night😴 God Bless LuvYa! Bye from Ohio🌹 can't wait till your next video
Your garden was beautiful. Lots of goodies. I love carrots right out of the garden. Yummy. Olivia is walking. Wow! She’s so beautiful and looks like her mommy and daddy. Been watching you all for years and u all are one of my very fav families. U come across as a truly real authentic family. I am adopted also. Adoption is where it’s at. God bless stay safe.
I am jealous, I am on the Kenai and the voles got the majority of our potatoes and the slugs got the peas and beans carrots did great but the rain and the wind beat everything up. living in Alaska being prepared is key. roads shut down volcanoes go off , flooding avalanches and road wash outs. just to name a few. If you could not leave your house what would you do. Last winter we had trouble with our well three times we were without water for weeks. We did okay but we called on our homesteading skills from our childhood. Skill development is so important. keep preparing for that W word.
I started my own garden during covid. Mostly tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and lots of herbs. Drying herbs is great as I dont need to buy any seasonings. The tomatoes I use to make sauce and that keeps me going for a long time. I am going to try for garlic, potatoes, and onions next.
I'm the same about the backups. A plan b is always important. I am not as far along as y'all with mine. I am working on getting better, and your family is an inspiration to me.
Always stay prepared..esp in winter.being older its harder to go out in the cold..can goods dry milk freezer full..back up battery your garden looked awesome..how much did the cabbages weigh from your last video?? Stay warm..
Growing up in Minnesota and having blizzards that can last a few days has taught us to be self sufficient and that has carried through to my adulthood. Gardens equal saved money there are so many things that you can do to be self sufficient as well! Great video guys!!!!!
We also had a nice well producing garden, freezing some , giving some to neighbors, senior center to help out neighbors.we had a bountiful harvest this year in pa. We have a lot of farmers market in Lancaster co. Here.get a lot from Amish people.stock up when prices are on sale.your potatoes look nice.we can have bad winters here in pa.take care and god bless you all up there.
I have a patry at my home. I stock it through out the year with stuff . I also freeze meals and preserve as much as I can. When winter hits sometimes we cant get out as much as we like.
It seems like y'all just got Liv yesterday she is growing so fast. I am truly grateful to be part of your family and the journey for all of you. God bless y'all
Im in the UK and after watching prepper videos in the US I have built up a nice supply of everything i need❤ In my local store I couldnt help but laugh and think of you when i saw a sign “Holy Guacamole” I was given some strange looks for laughing😂😂 🇬🇧🇬🇧
Fun video , your baby girl is beautiful and precious. All the fabulous veggies from your very successful garden will Bless y’all this winter . To God be the glory . 😊
I think it is a great idea to have a backup plan . I certainly do to first off after covid hit was an eye opener , You never know what may happen in the future .Olivia is a cutie ,. She is a happy girl .
I just have some tomatoes, cucumbers, chilies and lots of fresh herbs on the balcony. It is great to see them grow and eat my own harvest. But I remember my Grandma with a huge garden to put her carrots and root vegetables in a box with sand and covered them with it too. They kept for a long time this way
Wow a beautiful and healthy garden 🤗 I remember growing up with a garden and I miss that now. I love picking, shelling and canning. Having a garden is wonderful. Love y’all
It’s kind of entertaining listen to you all about being prepared and if possible self sufficient and in the next take you are running on Sunday at 9 pm to get Formula and a boat load of other stuff! Small steps I would say. Creating a pantry that has all the necessary stuff so you don’t have to go to Safeway late evening to buy stuff that you can get 10 miles away from North Pole 25% cheaper.
Do NOT give up on having your back up plan-plus have back ups for your back ups! Things ARE getting worse, and will continue the downward spiral!! PREP, PREPARE AND MOST OF ALL PRAY!!
I agree with you Brenda!!! Ontario Canada is still a joke with items not being available!!! It’s so frustrating.

No, I can’t believe sweet Olivia is about to celebrate her 1st birthday! She’s walking so good too! She’s so blessed to have you as her family! ❤
My dad was born in 1913 and my mom in 1919 they were a wealth of information… they knew how to do things without modern conveniences.
Lots of good things to eat. Olivia will like the home cooked potatoes and carrots. Great job! 🧅🥕🥔
I like the song...the last days of September...🎼🎵
Lifting up Gods continued blessings upon this wonderful family in Christ name amen❣
I'm 63 years old ! I think the world is not like it used to be for the kids ! I love your garden we had one your size growing up ! 😊

All of us!!

World is getting worse. Everyone needs a back up plan and ways to be self sufficient
Never stop learning or preparing. This world is not getting better. I ❤ your garden. As it is said...don't be scared be prepared.
Keep doing what you are doing plus more. The world definitely is not getting any better

I absolutely LOVE it when you start playing the song you played at the beginning of the video. Always means Fall is close!!!!

What an awesome garden! Olivia’s sweet hand on Jessica’s shoulder at the beginning of the video was precious! Love from Tennessee!
Try planting your vegetables in garden pots.. that is what my family did when it comes with tomatoes, potatoes, onions etc..

Great harvest. We must always be prepared as things could shut down at any time.

They kept potatoes, turnips, carrots and apples in the dark cold cellar, and lasted all the way into April like this.
Carrots work well dehydrated. I just shed and dehydrate and store in canning jars. Awesome yeild you had.
Olivia is so adorable. Garrett is getting so big. Great helper.
Voles and moles are my nemesis!!!!! Every summer is an episode of Caddy Shack !
Your potatoes did really well this year! You should try sweet potatoes next year too. Carrots freeze so well. We just scrub them and cut in chunks , no need to peel them. Happy upcoming birthday to Olivia! She certainly looks like a Sommers!
I love this song. I loved it last year too. Thanks for bringing it back. 😀
Prep & PRAY for the best.
Always good to have backups and good for the kids to learn these things.
it's hard to believe that olivia is almost one and walking . having a garden is a great way to save on the grocery bill . home grown veggies always taste better , plus you are teaching your kids a wonderful skill . you never know when you will need to grow vegetables to feed your family she is so blessed to have you and bert as her parents . she was a wonderful addition to your family
Learn, prepare to your best ability and PRAY!!
We know that we are not your typical subscribers, but seeing that we stopped in North Pole on our way to a RV rally with "RVing to Alaska" last summer, our hostess "Stacy" said that she is a veiwer and
we started watching you and got hooked!! Thanks for the great insight on living in Alaska!
Brings a smile to see Olivia walking!🌹
Now that is a lot of potatoes we try to prepare for winter because we can get up to 20. -25 feet of the White stuff we stock up on meet vegetables, dry products and we have two big generators pellet stove my husband buys a lot of the pellets in summer. I can't believe Olivia is almost 1 years old. Sending huge amount of love, hugs, and prayers always♥♥♥♥♥♥♥🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
You guys are on the right track! Keep preparing, keep being proactive and most importantly, keep praying!
You and your family are like a breath of fresh air!! I love watching your videos when they come out. God is so good!!
Three Cheers for Olivia how wonderful to see her walk so fast on the grass. Happy early birthday Olivia. That is one huge potato harvest. It sure seems that potatoes & carrots thrive growing in Alaska. Great team harvesting effort.
❤
O’ the old Safeway. It’s making me homesick.Formally from North Pole, UAA and UAF alumni.
I cannot believe that little girl is gonna be one years old already!
Love the video! ❤

We had a cold cellar when I was growing up stored. Carrots and taters in wooden boxes with sand. Kept them so well..
❤️💯🇨🇦
We have freezers that are full to the brim so this month of September we are buying nothing from the grocery store because in November we have a 1/2 a beef, a pig and 3 lambs going into our freezers…….your garden did really good 🤗
That is the best grocery store there is. You can put screens underground around the garden. That may help with the animals coming in.
Hi! Where's the other handsome little one that joined your family? Miss seeing him. Everything is wonderful there it seems.
It´s only 10 seconds in, and already I hit the like button - of course because of Olivia walking determined steps in the grass :D
It would be really interesting to see how your wife preserves all that great harvest.
Canning, freezing, freezer meals, etc.
💛 from 🇨🇦
Canning and drying is a must.
I know she does share a lot of it with friends and family.
And now she is on the run😂
Thanks for sharing❤
Oh sweet lil Olivia turning 1 already! Where has the time gone?😊
Jessica your garden really has provided for your family this year. Still can't get over the size of your cabbage heads.😮
Until the next video may God continue to Bless you and your family 🙏❤️😘
Your precious baby girl is walking oh my how time flies! Yay Olivia 🎉. Hello sweet kiddos from NC ❤ . Nice harvest family!
What’s not to love about this family ☺️❤️🥰
Stay warm..
I think we are all in for a rough ride , but we will find through it.
Olivia is one of happiest babies I’ve ever seen, bless you guys!
Livvy walks better than I do! Great to see y’all are all doing so well.
Always good to keep growing and learning. Nothing like having your own healthy fresh veggies and fruit from your own hard work. Great job!
Baby girl is thriving ! Adoption was a wonderful decision for all.
Love y’all
Miss Livvy is walking, now all the fun begins, can't believe she is almost a year xx.
Things are progressing according to God's plan. May we all have our lamps full. God bless you all 💗
It’s kind of entertaining listen to you all about being prepared and if possible self sufficient and in the next take you are running on Sunday at 9 pm to get Formula and a boat load of other stuff!
Small steps I would say.
Creating a pantry that has all the necessary stuff so you don’t have to go to Safeway late evening to buy stuff that you can get 10 miles away from North Pole 25% cheaper.
