Stop Motion Tutorial: Animating to Live-Action

Modern feature films may not want to use stop motion for their creatures and effects, but we can still have some fun combining our real-world creations with live-action video. My green-screen tutorial explains how to composite stop motion on top of a live-action video, but this one explores how to have your stop motion creations interact with live action.

Software: Dragonframe. iStopmotion (Mac and mobile) is a good frame-capturing app for the price. I understand iKITmovie is a good free option for Windows. Stop Motion Studio is a good mobile app. If you have a favorite stop motion app, please tell us about it in the comments. Edited using Adobe Premiere.
Camera: I'm using a DSLR. But if you're not there yet, a good option is a camcorder that can run a live video signal to your computer. But these days a mobile device with a camera running a stop motion app is all you need. The principles discussed in this video generally need a frame-capturing method that can show a line-up movie so you can time out and line up the action to the live-action plate.
Shopping for Puppet-Making:
Clay (Van Aken, Sculpy III), armature wire, cotton batting to build up puppet: Arts/craft store like Hobby Lobby or amazon.com.
Armature kit: stopmotionstore.com
Puppet clothes (Barbie/Ken clothes: dept store, ebay, amazon.com
16-gauge aluminum armature wire (from an art store or Amazon, not the hardware store)
Pre-wrap (Sporting good or drug store)
Cotton batting or foam (quilting supplies from craft or sewing store)
For the head, aluminum foil or wood ball (craft store)
Just about everything here can be found on Amazon if you don't have all these kinds of stores in your area. You can also get animation supplies from stopmotionstore.com.
I'm planning on shooting something like this, with live action in a woods, and then using my monitors as a sort of minature volume like what was used on the Mandalorian to add realistic lighting to my stop motion character. And taking two photos for each pose, one with a green screen so that I can key them out and use that as a matte to cut out the nice well lit version. I recommend anyone do this, if they can easily throw a black screen behind the character per each pose, so that you're not messing with colours when trying to remove all the green.

How do you composite stop motion over live action? I've looked for that video on this channel. I couldn't find it.
I use Adobe After Effects, and also get into that in the Greenscreen tutorial.

Mainly toggling. I start with onion skinning to get most of the spacing, but toggling shows all the detail better, like face and how the character is moving, like body twists.

Michael I have a question about focus can you animate a focus or do you have to focus in on one character finish that animation,and then just focus on the other character and then start the next animation?
You can animate a change to the focus (rack focus), including an ease in and ease out to simulate a gradual focus shift. On a DSLR with a manual focus lens, you can put a piece of tape on the lens and mark the beginning and end of the focus change, then mark the increments for each frame inbetween. As you animate, you would turn the focus ring to the next mark to gradually change the focus. The stop motion studio app also has a manual setting where you can change the focus over the course of several frames.
@@MichaelParks does that mean that I won’t have to use my hand to focus on the camera but i can focus using dragon frame?
@@ytwetethx There is a way Dragonframe can control focus, but I've never used it. That requires autofocus lenses that Dragonframe can take control of, and I just have manual lenses.
@@MichaelParks if I wanted to make a bigger sculpture for close-ups from the waist up of a sculpture, should I use thicker wire than 16th inch?
@@ytwetethx I'd just double up the 16th inch, twisting two or more together to make it stronger.
How to draw character for animation
Is there any mobile app that can import live action videos so that you can overlay the stop motion effects?
Not that I know of. Looks like Stop Motion Studio Pro can import still images, but not video.

It doesn't have that feature built in. You would need to composite the animation with the background plate in another app.
