This is one of the only central roles and non-impression roles Abby Elliott got in her 4 seasons as a cast member. The audience isn't really into it, but I think it's a strong sketch. Glad she got to do this before she left.
I think she was a real gem - and here she proves how great she is at centering the skit. But SNL just didn't know what to do with her. (She was an amazing Zooey Deschanel, too.)
I watched this 7nyears ago when I was 19. I found it funny and I knew what she was talking about but now, since I'm 26 I can relate to this skit much more painfully than I'd like to admit.
I still remember this sketch after so many years... Also, was Abby a real person? I can't believe someone can be so beautiful and funny at the same time... I mean, what is that?

+Rhett Simbulan Hader's character "is a dental assistant from Bridgeton, Maine." What made you think he went to medical school? Even if he were a dentist, which he's not, he would have only gone to dental school, which is not medical school by any description. His job involves tasks like safely getting rid of sharp disposeable instruments so nobody gets injured after they are used and identifying which garbage counts as "medical waste" so it can be safely thrown away. So, did the word "medical" in the phrase "medical waste" make you think someone had gone to "medical" school? In my experience, dentists want members of the general public to think there's really no difference between dentists & doctors. MDs, otoh, do not agree that a DDS & an MD are in any way comparable.
This sketch is funny because it’s so painful and sad. I can’t tell you just how badly you do not need a man who you need to trap into marriage. F that.

I have a feeling that this sketch was born from the writers asking Eli in meetings about girls throwing themselves at him in real life. It probably didn't matter what his answers in those meetings were. The writers probably wrote the sketch based on their perception of how many girls throw themselves at Eli, and then Eli probably said that he's not doing the sketch unless the guy is a fictitious character, not himself.
