This is actually reveled the first time puck kills subaru. He freezes and the time continues to pass, thus he is jumping worlds and not returning to the past.
Here's a cool fact: Echidna's whole speech towards the end was done on the first try. Maaya Sakamoto did roughly 2 full minutes of talking on her first take. That's one of my favorite facts from this anime.
I love Maaya Sakamoto. She is such an incredible person. I have been a fan of her since her career started. I watched Escaflowne when it came out and she voiced the MC and sang the OP at age 16. Then 2 years later she did the Opening for Record of Lodoss War TV and voiced one of the main characters in that and that opening is my fav opening of all time. It was years ahead of its time in quality. I followed her to RahXephon where she voiced the MC and sang the OP again, then .hack as Aura, and so so sooo much more roles through 2000s-2010s, Black butler, Monogatari, Arakawa, etc etc tec. She does so well in every role she does and brings so much character to every character she voices, her talent is insane. The fact that she voices the same character at 6 different ages and talks to herself while maintaining the different voices for each one is insane. Her range is crazy and her ability to focus and preform well is so good. We do not deserve her talent.
4:37 imagine what Emilia felt on this one... Subaru said to her in s1 ep 25 that he loves her 2000 times and shii, then found him kill himself for a girl you didn't even know
The promise that's proceeded by "In the end" was a part that was very difficult for a lot of people to understand. The gist of the whole thing, is that echidna always promises that she will get subaru to success, in the end.... not immediately. which means she has 0 intention of giving subaru all the answers immediately. recall how she is literally the witch of greed. she wants to know everything in the world. you dont think echidna would use subaru to die over and over to explore as much as possible like some full completionist gamer in an open world game? yea. thats about what i gathered from that
@@GOTGames being a witch, her greed is nonsensical, she'd be interested in the changes even insignificant decisions make. Being able to experience every choice possible in a given situation. One of the witches said she likes to play mean pranks on people, but it's simply because she wants to see what would happen.
Fun Fact: The little speech Echidna gave was shortened in the anime adaptation. Here's the full version from the light novel (I know none of y'all are gonna read this but I'm just showing how big it actualy is): “The Return by Death that you possess is an incredible Authority. You do not comprehend how it is truly to be used. You can redo the world any number of times before you arrive at the result that you desire. To a researcher, this is the ultimate ideal manifesting in physical form. Is that not so? By rights, you should only be able to obtain one result for any particular thing. You can make excessive amounts of varied deductions and suppositions about the results. But there is usually but a single result. You can never repeat the exact same conditions in search of a different result. The conditions all shift: time, environment, memory, procedures. ‘Back then, if I’d only changed one thing, the results would be different.’ This is not in the realm of ideals but of dreams and delusions. Because I have the heart of a researcher, your Authority truly makes my mouth water. With ‘identical conditions’ and ‘verification of differences’ secured, one can identify a ‘proper result’ and a ‘variant result.’ How could I not covet that? With it before me, how could I not test various possibilities? Of course, I will not coerce you to use Return by Death. You will use that power for the sake of the result you desire. And I shall lend my wit as much as you please so that your desire might be granted. I have high hopes that the great many results that shall be borne from this shall serve to satisfy my inquisitive mind. No one would punish a girl for wanting such a small thing, surely? Your desire for a future and my curiosity shall be satisfied together. Perhaps this makes you uneasy, for I do not know the future, either. I will not purposefully lead you to a mistaken future in order to test the results. All Unknowns are equal before me. By mulling and struggling against the same problems, the answer will come. This makes necessary the highest form of relationship between us. I swear I shall protect you with all my heart. But that does not change the fact that I cannot interfere with reality. If a physical obstacle stands before you, I can expect that challenging it will break your mind and body many times over. If it comes to that, I genuinely intend to exert my every power to protect your mind. I will not tell you there are no ulterior motives involved in that. But I don’t want you to think that I am calculating everything because of my inquisitive mind. I do think fondly of you, and it is a fact that my maidenly heart wishes to be of aid to you. I am repeating myself, but you and I are ideally compatibility. I can say it plainly. I will use your power, and you will use me for the sake of your ‘optimal future.’ It is my genuine desire to be a woman used for your own convenience. Though it would only be in this dream world, should you desire it, I do not mind using this body of mine to comfort you. I shall happily grant it to you. Oh my, that might not be the best thing for the people you care for, that silver-haired half-elf and that blue-haired demon…they who you have sworn to save and protect without fail. Not that I can claim any particular opinion toward them, but at any rate, please take it as expressing how strong, how unshakable my feelings are. Many difficulties shall befall you in the future as well. Your resolve shall lead you to challenge them, but that is tragic. I will become the beacon that lights your path. So, too, will I be the bonds you wish to protect. Your questions, your burdens, your feelings, your hopes…unexpectedly, through the Trial, you have taught me just how much value these things hold. Certainly, to you, the scenes you saw might have been Hell itself. But given the choice between knowing beforehand and ignorance, I wish to praise the will to learn even such tragic facts. With these serving as your gruel, you shall stretch a hand toward the future, even at the cost of your life. That Trial was necessary so that you might learn there might be sacrifices made for that future’s sake. As you use Return by Death more and more, perhaps your emotions might fray, perhaps the deaths of people precious to you might fail to move your heart, but most of all, you might have to lose some part of yourself in order to arrive at the place at which you are destined to reach. The Trial prevented that end. I did that, in order to protect you. If those scenes pained your heart, putting you on the verge of breaking, I do not exaggerate in saying I did it for that sake. Because it would serve as the linchpin for your moving forward, I accepted it. With my words, I shall grant you the strength to advance forward. I will console you, I will scold you, I will even love you. Or if it is hatred you require, I will devote that to you, all for you. You like girls who devote themselves to you, yes? You need me. By yourself, you cannot grasp the future. It is none other than I who is the most suitable girl for you. -You need me. And I need you. Already, there is none other than you who can satisfy my curiosity. I mean, I’ve already discovered you. You broadened my world. Through you, I, said to be the Witch bearing the greatest intellect in the world, have tasted the fruit of the Unknown once more. If you want to use that power to save someone, then save me. Having even the crumbs of that noble thought is enough for me. Please. I want you to trust me. Perhaps you think I deceived you because of the fact that I did not expose enough of what I truly thought beforehand. I wanted to get the timing right. If I exposed these feelings while our relationship was still shallow, you would probably have pushed me away. I did not want that. I could not endure that. That goes for you too, yes? If you lost me as a collaborator, your heart would surely be broken. We are both working toward our optimal ends. And I know what that optimal end is. I can help you. Through infinite trial runs, you will arrive at the future, albeit with your heart worn down and scarred by the ordeal. Let me do this. I will never betray your trust. Certainly, my heart might be attracted to the resulting choices, and my inquisitive heart may waver toward paths other than that which is optimal. I cannot hold my own greed in check enough for me to tell you that will never happen. I acknowledge that. But I will gloss over nothing. I will speak openly and honestly. Even if the result of that will damage your trust, I will expend no effort to win that trust back. No matter what might happen, I will, without fail, bring you to the future you desire. I absolutely, absolutely will. So as the choices necessary for that become clear, would you not let me be the one to choose? It will be precisely according to the preamble for the pact: I will grant what you desire, what it is that you seek. It will be no more and no less than this. After that, how much you permit your body to be sliced for the sake of that which you desire and crave is up to you. I have conveyed my resolve. Next, I want to hear yours. I want you to demonstrate that you, who would form a pact with me, who would benefit from my cooperation, have the enduring spirit required to arrive at the future without fail. It is you, the first and only one to overcome the second Trial, who can puff out your chest and speak these words with pride. Do this, please me, and I shall release you from the tomb and guide you to the third Trial. Beyond that rests the liberation of the Sanctuary. In so doing, the precious people most important to you, the people you care about held captive in the Sanctuary, will be saved. For the sake of this, you will undergo a true Trial. For the sake of that, seize me, use me, do with me as you please as you let your greed rage, and we shall grasp the future together. This is everything I have to offer to aid you and find what you desire, what you seek. I intend to peel back everything honestly and earnestly. I will not allow the other girls around us to interfere any longer. It is as you said: This is a matter between you and I alone. I want you to give me your answer. I have told you everything… Truly the naked truth. Passionately. This might be close to love. A vow of love. So how will you respond to my love? I want a reply. This reply, after all, will be another thing serving to satisfy my curiosity.” -With that, Echidna smiled adorably.
Fun fact: The author of Re:Zero releases IF stories every April Fool's day, and in the Greed IF route, Subaru actually says yes to Echidna's contract, and leaving out all other details, he dies over 100 million times, and he becomes so numb to dying that he kills himself just so he can go back and tell Petra whether it's going to rain or not the next day.
And if anybody wants to learn more about the IF stories without having to spend a lot of time reading all of them, Echidnut has made wonderful videos on all of them.
Just to drive the point home about why Subaru was so disgusted with Echidna: The terms of her contract made it clear that everything she says or does is for the sole purpose of satisfying her own curiosity. She doesn't care for anyone's wellbeing nor her own. She's willing to pay any price, whether that's making Subaru suffer and forcing him to make countless sacrifices, making a cruel promise with Betty just to see what happens, or literally offering her body to Subaru to make the contract more appealing. She's only ever been nice because she had something to gain from it, that's how shallow and GREEDY she is.
Too much insinuations, and those weren't the thoughts that were circulating in Subaru's head either. Either way, Echidna got the reaction and result she wanted.
What she offered is basically that she would brainstorm together with him, but she would only give him ideas that would manipulate him into creating scenarios that could satisfy her greed.
@GOTGames There is an omitted interlude chapter with Echidna and the other witches as active characters that takes place the moment after Subaru leaves the tea party. This chapter will reverse everything you've seen in this and the next episodes, especially when it comes to Echidna's character and her true movtives.
Novel fact that was cut from the anime version: Sekhmet, the witch of Sloth is the most powerful of all the witches, except from Satella. Echidna has said to Subaru that if Sekhmet wanted to, she would be able to kill all of the other witches there in less than 30 seconds, and that's why Sekhmet said that she was there to guarantee the fairness of all that stuff, 'cos in terms of power, none of the other witches could oppose her.
And then lots of flower beds sprouted from the spot where puck was and the sky was clear and birds are chirping like every trace of puck is gine like he wasn't there on the first place. @@GOTGames
Something I feel like is worth pointing out since they never outright say it in the anime, Reinhardt is objectively the strongest character in the story. To put it into perspective, when the author was asked, who would win in a fight between Reinhardt and the sun, he said Reinhardt would win. Even his sword is op which can only be drawn out against worthy opponents which is based off the swords judgment and not reinhardts. This is why he would be able to pull it out against someone like puck but not elsa.
i love the fact that they made such an op character in rezero, and a good guy at that!, and then proceed to only use him in a few places, and have actual restrictions , laws and other things which prevent or counter him. or else he would just be overused in each episode lol. tappei is a genius
Reinhard being able to defeat the sun is a mistranslation. What was actually said was that Reinhard could defeat "Od Lagna," which is equivalent to the core of the entire Re: Zero universe. So there's an argument that Od Lagna is thematically similar to a sun, but it was not said that Reinhard could beat "the sun" He's also been outright stated to be the strongest person
@@sorakirisaki5330 the ways he contrasts to Subaru is great. I think one of the things that just makes Reinhardt work so well is that he's a side character. He's basically the rezero equivalent of gojo who ironically has the same va.
@@PneumaAsh Od Laguna is way more impressive than a sun. It's basically the will of the entire universe. It's the consciousness of the world and basically a god.
@@sorakirisaki5330It’s a good thing for the re zero universe that he is a good guy without too much ambitions, because Pride route show that no amount of prep time will ever make this fighter fall to his knees
The 2nd trial is messed up considering Subaru is sacrificing his life to save others but even that comes with lots of guilt & a heavy burden. Heads up only Satella knows if Subaru is leaving another world behind when he dies since it’s her ability. The trial is a “unthinkable present” there’s so many potential presents for Subaru due to return by death the trial glitched and ended up showing him every potential present form each timeline 4:15 Satella only appeared because Subaru talked about return by death so much so as long as they don’t talk about it again she won’t appear. She also didn’t appear after the 1st tea party and 1st trial remember 7:22 It was always his voice also in the 1st trial 11:30 Fun fact Subarus VA didn’t read the light novel because he wants to act the scenes as in the moment as possible and one day he walked into the studio and everyone just kept saying bunnies to him and he was really confused lmao 13:50 Yes it is 16:30 Maybe ask the Re:Zero subreddit I’m sure they’d be glad to tell you ☠️ 19:18 Echidna herself did say that Subaru might have a knack for seducing witches in one of the earlier episodes 22:01 Before she died Echidna went around nd collected the souls of the other witches they are indeed all dead 25:35 Everyone who watched Luke long enough knows he’ll change his mind immediately when the witch of Lust pops up 28:22 More fun facts this whole monologue was done by the Echidnas VA in one take also it was 4 whole pages in the light novel the studio had to cut it down and fans actually got upset bc they thought it wasn’t long enough 33:31 I actually quite like that the approach to the 7 Deadly Sins in re zero is quite unorthodox and contradicting even the witch of wrath heals people with her wrath but it triggers a natural disaster somewhere else because she steals mana from the world so every time she heals someone people die that’s why she’s a witch. It makes you focus more on how they encapsulate their sin even tho their appearance isn’t befitting of it. There’s so many anime about the concept and it’s always pretty on the nose so props again to Tappei Nagatsuki for being an awesome writer and having the ability to subvert tropes and cliches so skillfully 35:08 Because telling someone to wait for a person that’ll never come and them ending up spending 400 years In insulation just to satisfy your curiosity is fucked up big time. Hope you had nice holidays and happy new year! Really happy you’re enjoying season 2 so much lots of reactors who mostly watch shonen think it’s boring due to the lack of action and it taking place in just one place but I think it’s amazing how this season is able to just build the stakes and mystery with each passing episode
"28:22 More fun facts this whole monologue was done by the Echidnas VA in one take also it was 4 whole pages in the light novel the studio had to cut it down and fans actually got upset bc they thought it wasn’t long enough " They are right, though, we should have had 4 pages of Dona-Dona noises.
@@daimahou3951 i dunno about the Japanese one but the English version is full 3 pages + 2 lines on the 4th page. but still, yea. thats one massive paragraph. i also like how its literally all just one paragraph. it makes it look like a complete wall of text that some people would use as an aesthetic background for a library website or smthn lmao
The Witch of Lust is absolutely 100% a proper choice. If you think about what Echidna says when she grabs SUbaru is that the Witch of Lust causes people to stop breathing or just outright die in her presence once they get close. It makes perfect sense she'd lust for a relationship where she could touch someone, love someone, who could stay close to her. In regards to the Witch of Sloth based on her appearance and mannerisms it's clear with her looks she's lazy and used them to get what she wanted. (note, both those statements are my own conjecture). This episode and the scenes are very different from the manga. In the manga Subaru decides to try the second trial. He was suffering under the mental anguish of all those potential worlds Echidna reached in and saved him to keep his mind from breaking. They begin to discuss the contract when the other Witches step in like this. In this episode he tells Echidna "it's okay to get angry" but in the manga he points out her expression and tone of voice don't fit what she's saying. Specifically her speech she tells him part of the contract will be him dying over and over to satisfy her greed for knowledge about every scenario and in doing so she'll be able to guide him to the proper choice though he'll have to learn to sacrifice. It's at that point when he truly realizes Echidna's character and motivations. She truly is the incarnation of greed because she simply doesn't have empathy for anyone. She see's Subaru and his Return by Death as a tool for her own benefit. If you think about it from this point of view from his first interaction with her this was always her goal in manipulating him.
That, plus in my mind people with sin powers in Re:Zero are represented either by people that fit that sin well (like lazy-ass Witch of Sloth here, super hungry Witch of Gluttony, the Archbishop of Gluttony we saw earlier, etc) or by complete opposite of that sin (Witch of Lust being really shy and timid, Archbishop of Sloth was quite energetic, almost hyperactive)
Spoilers: arc 6 webnovel cut witches' backstory moment. Sekhmet is the opposite of your conjecture in using men lmao. She was worshipped as the reincarnated God of the giants after previously being left to die by her people for her unusually small weak body, they were eventually brought to ruin, she was also a sex slave at some point having been cast out by the giants and the slavers also ended up dead I think? Generally witch factor owners have never had easy lives, I think Echidna's by far the least tragic one and she still dies age 19 or something? OK I mean witches with witch factors had it rough anyway. Their powers are literally like monkey's paws. Also Carmilla reminds me of I think Helen of Troy, her power caused people to fight over her in ever expanding ruin and she was lost in the process, her identity, voice all drowned out by the version of her which they waged war over. All of them end up dead with entire kingdoms after their heads as well before Satella destroyed almost everything.
This episode here, really sets in the absolute Horror of time looping. So many timelines where things went wrong and the fact that it ends with subaru not even knowing whether all of it is real or not.... it must be terrifying for him
Notice how the first trial back in episode 3 said to face the PAST.... now, hes facing the second trial.... unthinkable PRESENT.... the third trial.... i wonder..... It was a CHRISTMAS ANIME afterall lmao
Subaru: _experiences a montage of all his deaths and sees the pain it caused those closest to him_ Echidna: "So yeah, I want you to keep doing that as much as possible so I can satisfy my curiosity. But I promise to get you to your desired outcome... eventually. Also, you can use me however you want." Luke: "Would." Echidna: "Also, I'm the reason Betty's been miserable for 400 years and wants to die." Luke: "...still would."
Is really sad that they cut a lot of the 2 trial in the anime, a lot of the routes are way longer, like the one when Rem kill Subaru, there an entire conversation between Emilia, Rem, Ram and Rosswald, that flesh out their point of view at that moment, showing how Rem couldn't justify how she murder Subaru so brutally and also let us see that Emilia already care a lot for Subaru at that moment, even resigning the fight for the throne😢
"I will without fail bring you to the future you desire." This statement means she will use return by death as many times as it takes to get it perfect. There are alternate stories where this can range from something as minor as getting out of bed a different way to cause a restart all to fuel her curiosity. Basically accepting her contract is the equivalent of doing a 100% completionist run and Subaru dies millions of times essentially living hundreds of thousands of years within the span of a month. It is hell.
Yeah... "Behold an unthinkable present" was one of those lines that got engraved into my brain after watching. I LOVE this scene, and the more I think on it the more interesting it is.
back in season 1, roswaal stated that he wanted to kill the dragon, and yes reinhard is op af, guy can pretty much one shot the sun itself , no kidding and if subaru formed the contract with echidna, thats the start of the Greed IF story.... he dies a MILLION times... yes a million, LITERALLY , he eventually turns into roswaal (mentally i mean), and he even kills himself just so that he can tell others about the weather forecast.. like bruhhhh thats wild
He actually dies over 100 million times. I think he pretty much surpassed roswaal in terms of mentality, like you said he got to the point where he would kill himself for something as stupid as the weather.
Hope Luke will watch all the IF stories after finishing this anime, I even want him to watch some more OST of Re:Zero since there's a lot of great OST from this anime
As I heard or read somewhere in the English and Spanish versions, Edchina's speech was recorded in several parts. But in the Japanese version the voice actress Maaya Sakamoto recorded the entire scene in one go and the first time. Seriously, Japan is on another level😂😂
The problem of the contract is that Echidna lacks emotions and if Subaru gets the contract it could get hideous. Echidna wants to explore return by death, but is not able to force Subaru to use it, however, the path Subaru would choose is advised by her. Let's take the first loop as an example. Our objective is to return insignia to Emilia. The fastest possible route for this outcome is the death of Felt. We follow her to the slums and oh shit, we are fighting Rom and Felt now. Of course, we are still weak as fuck, so our efforts are futile, but we still try to kill them 10 times or more. Ok, time to find another route, how about stealing the insignia back from Elsa? After 10 more tries, it did not work either, and this cycle continues until you reach the desired outcome of returning this damn insignia to Emilia. And Echidna's ability to lie should also be taken into consideration, in the end, she is greedy for any kind of experience. She could convince us that jumping Reinhart is an essential step in acquiring insignia, but in reality she would do it for shit and giggles and just to see what would happen. At one point, you will acquire an acceptable outcome without thinking, but the cost for it would be an absurd number of restarts. Of course, Echidna's plans would be more complicated than "fuck it, we ball!", since she is an intelligent gal, but SHE CAN LIE and there is no guarantee she would see the best possible scenario the same way as Subaru would.
1 of the explanations: She promised "In the END... you gonna reach the desired RESULT" = She gonna make Subaru re start infinite times to see EVERY SINGLE POSSIBILITY until she finds the best one = Subaru mind gonna eventually be completely gone 💀
She's like an ultimate completionist that plays every aspect of a game till she gets the 200% completed achievement. Which includes letting her character die thousands if not millions of times. In this case, Subaru is the character she is playing with.
@@filipe_paixao Yeah only she's the type to set her sim on fire or drown them in the pool for her own amusement, and then just reload the save. That is her plan for Subaru.
At the time of the first trial, it was already Subaru's voice who announced the first trial about the past. Now, with the second trial, it's about the present. Each person who takes the trial seems to hear their own voice when it starts.
This episode is epic. So much happened: The unthinkable presents present a deeply disturbing possibility for how return by death might work, we see all the witches, we see Subaru demonstrate some qualities of a real hero by recognizing the fake rem as a fake, and by rejecting Greed’s contract, and we see all 7 witches assemble. 16:20 your head is in the gutter this episode Luke, witch of lust doesn’t like Subaru much at all but came here to save him because Echidna told her too to stop his mind from eroding to nothing in the trial 21:50 Its what the afterlife looks like for Echidna because of very special circumstances the other witches are there because Echidna gathered and preserved their souls. Yes they are very much dead 28:20 multiple page text speech greatly reduced in the anime. The biggest thing I think they missed including in the speech was the part about how amazing return by death is for researchers in performing experiments under the exact same conditions when this is normally not possible 31:00 you really really really don’t want to sign. The part you seem to be missing is that Echidna wants to use return by death as a researcher performing experiments about every possible change and the results. This would mean hundreds of millions of deaths for Subaru after he just found out that parallel worlds are a possibility 35:15 yes we get the impression that contracts with the witch of Greed almost inevitably lead to this sort of bad/sad end as the witch seeks to satiate her curiosity with almsot 0 regard/understanding to the actual wellbeing of others
" 16:20 your head is in the gutter this episode Luke, witch of lust doesn’t like Subaru much at all but came here to save him because Echidna told her too to stop his mind from eroding to nothing in the trial" Now, think about what happened with Emilia last episode...
Clarification, its either plot hole or just illusion for him to scare him of consequences and lack of self respect. In changed timeline theories way how Roosvald talk would still make sense. There cannot be different timelines to jump between as Witches are preserved through his time travel. So this is only illusion for him, not real thing. If the world would be divided by time travel, there would be several copies of witches, and that would create conflict for the copies of witch who wants Subaru.
Referring purely to stuff we know from around here in the novels: no. Satella's ability to stay with him doesn't break down if Subaru is travelling between them since we still don't understand her involvement with return by death. Both the witches and Roswaal have already spoken of Subaru as having a powerful contract with her and those sorts of contracts magically bind the soul, they're capable of messing with return by death and authorities etc. In fact that's exactly what Echidna was trying to do, create a second contract of that sort. If Subaru doesn't have issues running into parallel hims, I mean it's simply his memories taken over, then nor would they. Beyond that Satella actually already uses time related abilities without any authorities: she is the most powerful magic user and her enormous amount of yin magic is capable of freezing time, which is what Subaru feels when he breaks the taboo. Time is frozen for him as she grabs his heart and seems to search for something in his soul. Spoilers novels: Using lore from later arcs I know people say it's been disproven but the question posed is something more like "does return by death, maybe with Satella's involvement, transport Subaru to a new world where he can survive or does it stay in the current world and remake it entirely, including every single living being within it, to reset it?" so Subaru doesn't believe there is a non monstrous explanation for his authority. Yes he uses it to create the future in which everyone he possibly can protect will survive after choosing them, but he wrestles with how he's choosing them and who knows if there are futures beyond his expanding bubble where he's causing worse and worse effects? That is basically the nature of witch factors after all, you should never rest easy with the possibilities they give you.
@@siginotmylastname3969 Who knows? I know. I know, that he isnt creating alternate timeline worlds as good worldbuilding must be consistent. And I wasted time for too much time travel stories. One: Time travel must be consistent. Two: Echidna is not affected by it. Three: Witches were mortals even with their way to cheat death. Four: even their dream world that they can survive as concious is In some way limited to some areas. its bind to the world. Not toying with satella itself, Echidna is not affected by the RBD, which means Echidna after every RBD is the same Echidna. Which means, Subaru is not in different world, he is in the same world. Another, There much bigger point than witches. There is item that is unaffected by RBD. Roswal's gospel book. To give Roswal knowledge about Subaru's RBD ability book must stay in the same world, as magic or not, by creating timelines for "book's perspective" there would be only knowledge about actions of RBD owner limited to one timeline, in which is current copy of book contained. Three, Roswal perspective is based on changing timeline, not timeline worlds. If Subaru would change world, not timeline itself, his ability would be worthless for any other person perspective. For every old timeline Roswal death would be ultimate lose, as other world Roswal would be different from a enemy stranger wanting to keep Subaru ability for himself. Of course, author of the story could change that to different worlds. But in that situation worldbuilding and time travel wouldnt be consistent, and entire story wouldnt be worth watching. I dont care about Rem, Ram etc, for me Re:Zero is only worth something for interesting isekai plot, which is rare. And I hope that author will not damage it for keeping edgy "dark" reality of multiple worlds created by time travel.
Once again, this is my anime-only interpretation. So, what exactly is wrong with Echidna’s proposed contract? The way I see it, it’s like this. In this very episode, we saw the possible endings in the timelines Subaru left behind. Echidna even admitted that it was possible that those timelines continued to exist after Subaru’s death. With that context, what Echidna’s offering is very sinister. Subaru asked her to confirm that he would “reach the best possible ending through the best possible method” which she could not confirm. The implication is that if he were to accept Echidna’s help, he would have to do anything she asked him to do in those “throwaway” timelines. For example, if it helped him gain information, there could be a timeline in which Subaru would be forced to abandon someone he cared about. Or even worse, he may be compelled to kill people for the sake of reaching his goal (much like how Roswaal killed Ram/Garfiel in the last timeline so they wouldn’t interfere). If Subaru accepted the contract, he would never be able to guarantee that Echidna wouldn’t lead him down those kinds of roads, because ultimately her goal isn’t to help him but to satisfy her own curiosity.
In fact the previous loop is designed to show us how Subaru disregarding what happens to him is already leaving behind worlds where he may hurt others, the reason he made it to Emilia's side while chased by the rabbits was because he ordered the "empty" Ryuzu clones who haven't picked up many memories and personalities yet to throw away their lives protecting him, ironically Garfiel hates him and fears him in that loop but Garfiel is himself the first person we see treating those clones as a lesser form of life(he suffers over how the ones he calls grandma are born in the same way as the ones who will mindlessly follow orders and refuses to order specifically those Ryuzus). Subaru did that thinking he wanted to die by Emilia's side at least before trying again, and just as he was about to die with her kissing him he basically thought, is this really how I'm going to let it end, with Emilia broken, not even telling her to escape from the great rabbit before she's eaten? He had a similar "plan" before Beatrice saved him from Elsa, where he at least wanted to die together with Rem and not to Elsa's hand. He was giving up and cared mostly about minimising things a little like, I won't let Elsa kill her(might even kill her myself if it's that or getting eaten /whatever being the subtext around the Rem thing). He was suicidal himself and that meant his mindset really wasn't well suited to saving and protecting others so yes, this mindset would lead to a theoretical future of millions of despair filled worlds made far far worse by a very depressed Subaru and Echidna. And most importantly, Echidna, with all the knowledge at her disposal, can see what Subaru's been up to and his memories when he gets in her world. So you can never be an equal in a contract with her, she can't help but manipulate if she has an uncontrollable greed for something and the paths to reach it just enter her mind with the other party. She doesn't have to want to manipulate you because she has so much information to do it that it'll just happen which is one of the sort of eldritch horror aspects to her specifically which I love. I can't say she's evil for it because she doesn't like using her authority! But this world draws information from it so she can't avoid that power.
This episode's ending is why you binge this series. Or at the very least do it in 5-6 episode batches. Because Each. Fucking. Episode. Each Episode! Cliffhanger. And the cliffhanger just promises even more insanity as Subaru's current predicament just ramps up, and up, and up. Plus the author is just kind enough, and cruel enough to give us just enough information for us to really lose our minds analyzing this awesome story. But what you should be thankful is that you are just hitting the HALFWAY POINT of the season. If this is the climax of the first half, where things are at their lowest... imagine the ending. You are not ready for what comes next. It'll blow your mind. When Subaru makes his stand.
So a lot goes on this episode I feel like it's important to highlight some things: 1: Subaru's version of the second trial means it's practically impossible for him, because he needs to do it over and over again for every single time he's died. 2: The contract with the Witch of Greed is basically, she will help him reach the perfect future, but they will use Return by Death to gain as much knowledge as possible. She says she won't force him to use it, but if he ever does refuse, that can be taken as him forfeiting the perfect future, which means she's not obligated to help. So basically Subaru has just been presented with the idea that using Return by Death might not be a great thing, and is then immediately approached by someone who wants to use it as much as possible. Keep this in mind for next episode.
In case you missed it, That was the Witch of Sloth. Remember a certain fanatic witch cultist of love for sloth we met? "My Brain Trembles". Now we know why his brain trembled thinking about her.
... I never thought of it that way and I don't think the author intended that line that way but I have no proof it's not true even though Ive read arcs 1-4 light novels and 5-8 webnovel plus side stories, so have a like for your excellent theory. 😭
Ironically, the witch of lust Carmilla has no sexual experience. It isn't that she is lustful, but that others will lust after her (mostly an inconvenience, partly why she wears the least revealing clothes). More accurately, her authority makes it so that people become so fascinated by her as to lose all awareness of their actions. Also, looking at her face reflects the person you desire to see the most. She eventually became known as a witch because of all the atrocities committed in her name by those she charmed.
@@herbertwalter8693 What? Weren't all of them in Arc 6? Like when a chapter started, each one started with one of the witch's backstory and then the main story continued after that? I thought they covered all 6 of the witches
@@remmzero684it was cut from arc 6 novels so it's fair game. Honestly those backstories had absolutely no significance in the plot or with how Subaru talked about them afterwards, spoiler stuff with the witches is more in the Omega side stories and post arc 5 interludes really, and even the arc 4 webnovel fleshed out their backstories more with Echidna trying to poke the other witches to explain Subaru's second trial going "wrong". Remember how she tries to ask Sekhmet about a parallel world where she didn't fight Volcanica, or Minerva about one where she didn't go to save the elves in a certain battle? Tappei's left these as crumbs so eventually I'm sure the witches' pasts will become plot relevant in arc 10 or something. That makes none of these things spoilers in my mind, since us discussing it early means people won't have forgotten and be arguing about plot holes 6 years from now...
@@herbertwalter8693WHAT ⁉️😭 why the hell would they do that, those backstories were such a good addition to the arc. I also heard they cut/changed some parts where Subaru uses a certain ability (spoiler obv) is that true?
G.O.T Games i just want to say that before this re:zero reaction series i did not know of you. i generally have a thing for reaction videos but for some odd reason your re:zero reaction uploads get me more excited than any other channel ive watched that has reacted to re:zero. idk what it is but youre just entertaining to watch man, keep it up. 36:28 now this is something that wont get explained in the anime unfortunately, but i think its CRUCIAL to know for understanding the greater lore of re:zero. also i should probably post this on the next episode's reaction but honestly it wont matter as it wont get explained one way or another. satella and the witch of envy are NOT the same person! in this whole sequence where satella shows up to the tea party, it is explained to subaru (in the web novel) that satella was given the witch factor of envy when she was not yet prepared to take it, leading her to develop something of a split personality? its very vague in how they describe it, but it seems it makes sense to separate the entity called the witch of envy from the girl called satella. this will become important later down the line in arc 6 when deeper lore about re:zero is explored. another interesting tidbit is that all the witches seem to hate the witch of envy, while being fine with satella, except for echidna who hates both equally.
Spoilers novels: I agree with writing all of that and what you said! But I don't believe it'll be "left out" of the anime in the very end. The reason for this is that I believe there is a connection between Satella's split personality and Echidna having a different appearance /personality to "old/living" Echidna, especially since if would explain her being alone in rejecting that Satella and the witch are different people: she'd be projecting since she doesn't want to treat herself as not "her self". I believe it connects with the Petelgeuse and Regulus we see in Subaru's shadow garden scenes which are also cut, which then connect with Subaru being connected with Flügel and Emilia with Satella by somehow not being them either. And all of this will probably be a major plot in the conclusion of the entire series. Nature if the world/authorities/what Satella did and why/what Echidna is, there are so many massive lore implications to the whole how the authorities mess with your soul question that if the anime keeps going it will definitely cover it(and next season they're going to be forced to show shadow garden scenes and explain weird stuff with souls anyway). It kind of makes sense for a series which didn't conclude not to open a potential massive bag of worms before dropping re zero at arc 7 though(I beg not to stop animating at arc 7 I love arc 7 and 8...).
@@siginotmylastname3969 yeah, though i think it not being explained now can make this sequence (which i think is pretty important) not make sense. if the viewer learns about this stuff in season 3, theyre likely to forget the connection to this sequence unless they rewatch or something. but yeah i agree with what you say and i like your theories. i never thought about echidna that way much but with how mysterious she is i dont doubt something going on. also i doubt theyll drop rezero after arc 6. im sure itll get picked up again once arc 8 is finished for another season covering 7 and 8 together (since theyre a set).
The terror continues in this series although we were expecting some sort of horror, but still is quite the nightmare. And it is something Subaru doesn't think about is that when he dies how they all feel seeing someone they care about die in front of them. On a completely different topic though I'm excited for when you start Demonslayer one of my favorite series. But enjoying your reaction to Re:Zero, Luke! Your voice sounds better, so I hope you are doing well now! 💖

for the next anime I highly recommend "summer time rendering" in my opinion its a great anime with similar vibes to re:zero, but I understand why you wouldn't wanna watch a similar anime right after re:zero.
Its unclear whether the World Goes on after Subaru dies or if he just goes Back, the Trials aren't literal, They're simulations of reality meant to force you into realising/changing a belief you have.
29:44 to tl:dr this speech for anyone who didnt follow "i will help you because your power can generate infinite knowledge and experimentation routes through multiple timelines" (the witch of greed thirsts for knowledge return by death is very good for gathering it and subaru is attached to it) shes genuinely down to do almost anything for that purpose
I like the fact that this show indirectly acknowledged Steins; gate with the multiple world lines theory. One more thing, I don't blame you for not questioning what happens to the world line after he dies since lots of things happen that it's technically an afterthought. Anyways, good reaction bro! And have a well-deserved holiday! Edit:Even though you want something dark and long watch, I'll recommend something a bit light (I want to see something joyful): My recommendation is either Danmachi OR Miss Kobayashi's dragon maid
Cannot believe you put those two in the same basket, Summertime is leagues better and actually peak while Tokyo Reeeee just progresses in a downward spiral of lame.
Luke might not understand the thing aboud Echidona, she is emotionless, she doesnt understand feelings, she is mimicking how others behave, her laughing, jumping to table in rush about the contract, everything is an act, everything she did until now was only to get subaru to accept the contract... Also the contract! if subaru took it, him and echidonas soul would basically merge, they would both be in subarus body, now, what she wants from his is knowledge, so what would subaru have to do? idk, how does it feel to eat the one you love? Ok lets kill emilia and eat her, ok we got this knowledge, how does it feel.... to rape? how do poop taste? what if you eat your own eye? Echidona wants to know EVERYTHING in the world, the good stuff but also the bad, morbid, etc.. subaru would have to do a lot of stuff like killing those he loves and those he hates before she could get him to the desired outcome And yes, the aishiteru Rem/Carmilla used for "Love" is the highest meanning possible, just like how witch of envy used it, also another confirmation in this episode that subaru does love Rem And Carmillas power is faceless bride, every person that sees carmilla sees her differently, people get madly in love with her, start fighting each other, whole cities and villages were destroyed because people got mad and started killing each other because of her power, even though she herself is pretty nice person, her power is more like "passive abillity" so she cant help it, also ye, people forget how to breathe and just die if they are too close to her
@@misovlk4937 she was playing the villain so that he could go on. Its her tsundere way to help. We even had confirmation from the author that she in fact didnt wanted subaru to accept the contract
@@doublehit9165 thats pretty hard to believe, even wiki doesnt say so, wheres your info from? Also except the If stories and side stories I have read all of wn so far
You know what i find very interesting? Petelgeuse asked Subaru: "Are you Pride?" and I allways saw this is as a kind of foreshadowing, that Subaru is an Sins Archbishop himself. It would be interesting in how Subaru presents himself he is a good representation for "Pride", he got situated from the world in this position, even if the witch of envy brought him into this world and gave him his return ability.
For the poll it might make sense to include My Hero Academia and Hunter x Hunter, both are on the shorter side of long running anime For My Hero Academia it's 138 episodes plus however many episodes we'll get in season 7, which starts airing in April For Hunter x Hunter it's 148 episodes On top of that I'd also like to throw in Haikyuu!! as a contender
Don’t worry, RBD doesn’t send Subaru to an alternate timeline or anything (probably). The second trial seems to show you the alternate present that is meant to mess with the person. I am not sure though, it’s just my theory. Also day 11 of requesting Luke react to the original songs from the new Phase Connect generation.
Reposting here from Patreon: I find it very ironic that the "downside" to Echidna's contract, in this case, is usually what one would say is the "benefit". It kind of throws you off a little at the start. Unlimited advice from one of the most knowledgeable beings in the world. What's the catch? You'd think it has something to do with her having a "taste" of Subaru's accomplishments, but as the other Witches point out (and the Greed IF story shows), it's actually the advice itself that you should worry about. Because you are leaving yourself open to endless manipulation and sidetracking from a notorious "experimenter" with everyone's lives on the line. Of course, Echidna doesn't believe this is an issue. Subaru can return by death. Subaru said he would preserve through the sacrifices. The details are not important as long as a positive goal is achieved "in the end" (where have I heard that before?). Like Subaru states, Echidna is (almost) emotionless. Her greed is what is most important. Her personality up to now is just a mask that is deemed necessary. Subaru's sanity is secondary. But luckly the Witches interfered, and Subaru remembered about Beako. She had a contract too from Echidna. And how did that turn out? Echidna's indifferent response was really what Subaru needed to know to turn down the contract. However, this leaves Subaru in a bit of bind. The problems in and out of the Sanctuary are numerous and grow with every loop. If Subaru perseveres alone, all he does is potentially add more bad endings and more grief. But if he seeks out help, he is left with those who might manipulate him or don't have his best interest at heart. So, Subaru stands on a knife's edge, unable to completely reject sacrifices and unable to completely accept them. Indeed, this is why he has trouble with the second trial. He can't find an answer that is satisfactory. His first trial went easier because he had already accepted his past regrets from his home in Season 1. But his present is different. His present is an endless living hell. I think next episode should further enhance these ideas.
5:31 These are all alternate realities, in which Subaru died. What Roswall meant last episode that When he dies it's a restarting poin for him only. The others in that realities where he died, everyone else suffers. It's like multiverse kinda shit. Imagine everytime he died the agonise the pain everyone else suffered coz of his death(If it's a possibility 😏).
7:20 they said in the first trial that it was echidna saying it but even in the first trial it sounds more like Subarus voice than echidna (I assume it’s a mistranslation)
Pay attention of Echidna expression when Satella first appear. She's showing a face full of negative emotion like anger, disgust and even fear when Envy showed up, which is interesting because Echidna never showing that kinda emotion before. This is also relatable to why she never assumed witch of Envy as a _"person"_ in her all other convo with Subaru before, but always refer to her as _"that thing"_ or _"it"_ in the original Japanese dialogue. Echidna truly hate Satella with all her guts. Also a bit trivia about Echidna's rather SUS speech section, one fans once asked the author "does the Witch of Greed Echidna also have curiosity about, Sex?" and the author answered *"ENDLESSLY"* LMAO
In the anime a huge foreshadowing was skipped, so it is not a spoiler, which was Minerva asking the figure if it was Satella or the Witch of Envy (I dunno if it was in the LN but the WN had it)
Pretty sure it was in the LN as well, I've read it years ago so I don't remember exactly, but I do remember I was disappointed by how many important details were cut.
Here's a fun but also disgusting fact: Sekhmet the witch of Sloth may look like an absolute bombshell but she's smells absolutely foul. She doesn't bathe & relieves herself anywhere she is. Going to the bathroom is to much effort. She uses her ability to pick up the waste.
One thing that I'd like to elaborate on with minimum implications is to continue being vigilant with Echidna and not "narrowing down" or thinking that you may have "figured her out" The fun and fascinating thing about her character as that you should absolutely never take what she says at face value even if it seems like she's "revealing" something true about her, and that goes for both good and bad directions. So when you picture her long monologue with the creepy smile and her subsequent conversations with Subaru, keep an open mind about what she's doing at saying. She's by far the hardest character in the story to get a a read on and getting stuck on any kind of "I get it know" may do her character a diservice, not necessarily saying you did that Luke, just thought I should say this 🙂👍
20:10 you know idk if that was a mistranslation (it probably is) but i totally missed that she said "return by death is the witch of envys authority" the first time i watched this and thought she said it was granted by the witch of envy but tthat make so much more sense now (if we put it in sin archbishop terms subaru would be hte archbishop of envy technically since its part of the authority of envy also for some context to those reading this that read the novels i watched season 1 and 2 of the anime and then started reading the WEB novel at arc 5 so i did miss some light novel info and sidestory info)
Echidona really tried to set Subaru up with the greatest car selling pitch of all time. By the time of her speech Subaru realized that she's literally the incarnation of greed, as in every detail of her mannerisms, facial expressions, and the feelings she's expressed are all fake in order to get all the information she wants. She acted during all of their interactions to build up Subaru's trust and by the time he breaks down and offer him the greatest sales pitch of a deal he could ever need. The person with the most knowledge in the world offering guidance. Subaru's willingness to accept this deal banked entirely on the trust that was built up, he thought he understood the witch up until the other witches got mad at how he'd make a deal without thinking of the effects on himself. Realistically, ignoring all the "use me" portions of the speech, all she wanted was to get Return by Death as a tool for her to gain possibly infinite amounts of knowledge by forcing Subaru to take "EVERY PATH", as in allow himself to die in each and every situation to see what happens. Like a visual novel player deciding to take all the bad routes first just to see them in action.
Here is where the route of greed is created, in a world he accepts the contract with her, and an else world where Equiqna as subaru kills himself in infinite ways to saciete her thirst of knowledge
How about To Aru Majutsu no Index/A Certain Magical Index in Eng or To Aru Kagaku no Railgun/A Certain Scientific Railgun in Eng. I remember you reacted to the openings and were curious about it. Happy New Year.
35:00 Exactly. It's fascinating. Well, Subaru is angry because he would function by the same logic as Beatrice and would have remained stuck in that limited understanding of the contract.
The next episode will be awesome with the same awesome cliffhanger, especially considering that episode 13 was the last in the first part of the second season and viewers had to wait impatiently for the release of the second part, but we will see your reaction to it most likely in 2024, I suppose.
4:15 It was always his voice. his own voice speaks there 6:45 they called him a coward probably cause he wasnt brave enough to keep living on after rem died... or atleast thats what they will thing. cause subaru has no chance to clear it up further 23:13 remember how in season 1 betty also formed a contract with subaru like that... 35:00 wdymmmmmm.... that is literally complete child neglect lmao. poor betty 36:34 yes that iirc, is from the webnovel of re:zero. thats why her blindfolds shouldn't be removed
Ferris hates those who don't value their lives.(He also hated the cultists of witches for being so ready to give up their lives so easily) This is due to his reaction
1- As the witch of lust said, Rem was the person Subaru most wanted to see, not Emilia, not any other person, Rem. That is... interesting. 2- It is not confirmed in novel but 99% sure there are no timelines and the world rewinds when Subaru dies. Also, it wouldn't make any sense in the story that he can't save people. He would be diying for nothing. 3-- Not only lust and sloth, all dead witches names and appearances seems to be switched, why? no idea
It's because their titles are not tied to their personalities or any personal sin. The title of "Witch of ....." is related to their authority. Carmilla has the Authority of Lust, ergo she is the Witch of Lust. Of course, there is an issue of compatibility with the sins and authorities, but in general the sins are not that much related to the personality of their users, except for some of the Archbishops.
@@rhazortrhazort3003 It's not that simple. You can rotate the names and appearances one position and then everything would be perfect. It is done on purpose.
I mean, In the novel (at least web version, not sure about LN) the world ends very soon after Subaru dies. After Subaru stabbed his own throat and Felix healed his already dead body, Subaru rose up as kind of a zombie controlled directly by the witch, ending the world using the shadows
The Witch of envy's pronunciation of "I love you" was indeed different. It means...literally eternal love to the grave. Considering that this is their first meeting face to face and this is the first thing she said to him... it was extremely creepy. For me personally, I would accept Echidna's contract. But I would discuss in great detail all the intricacies and pitfalls about it. I really like the Witch of Sloth because she is so lazy that she even refuses to stand and sighs after every sentence because she is tired. We've seen so little of her and she already has such good characterization. As for the Witch of lust, I find it very funny that she is modest, quiet and in the most not revealing dress. Very counterintuitive.
in the end no witch is good, they might seem nice at first glance but they are a witch for a reason. But still love Echidna xD and also loved how fabulous she was in this episode. And look how Satella walked in like a chad to protect her man from the other witches xD...
To comprehend this, this is only a possibility. Return by death either truly reverses to a prior point in time or moves him into an alternate reality in which the events that led to his death have not happened yet. The trial shows him the alternate reality version as it is the worse option. The time thing is what I perceive as more likely as the other one would mean the witch of envy would lose him to another version of herself. Regarding the witch she is compatible and not compatible with the witch factor, that is why you have Satella and the witch of envy. As a being she is highly compatible with the factor which is part of the reason she is so powerful, but her personality is not. So the factor basically corrupted her, Satella is what remains of the person she originally was, the witch is basically the fully corrupted version.
Good thing that you could just watch next ep within a few days meanwhile those who watched this during the air time had to wait for 4-6 months for the 2nd half 😂
Re:Fun fact 1.The Black serpent is the strongest out of all the mabeast 2. There is actually a story made by the author a Re what if Subaru agreed with Echidna contract, but that made him die 10,000 times and emilia was mentally unstable in that timeline
33:10 She makes a LOT of sense, actually. In fact, she might make the most sense of any of the witches. Think of it this way: Imagine you're the most lustful and perverted person in the world. You're the picture perfect image of what you'd assume the Witch of Lust is. Now, imagine you get an ability that makes every person who gets close to you die, what do you think would happen? I'll tell you what happens: Trauma. A LOT of trauma. Like, an absolutely ridiculous amount of trauma. We're talking Subaru levels of trauma here. Everyone who gets close dies. Everyone you try to live dies. Hell, even everyone you could try to abuse just dies too. Necrophilia is the only thing you'll ever get, and that's definitely not gonna do it for you even if you WERE into it. And guess what? If every time you try to do anything, you end up killing someone, what do you think is gonna happen to your moral code? Unless you ditch it and go full heartless, what do you think you're gonna feel? Guiltier than a Subaru beholding the unthinkable present is what. And guess what happens when you're unavoidably deadly, but really hot. Corpse happen. So what does your traumatized and guilt crippled self do? You start wearing enough clothes no one's gonna want you, and then you'll start avoiding people like the plague. And with how lustful you are, chances are you're terminally horny at this point, so you'll literally dig yourself into a hole if you need that to avoid seeing people, cause you know you're not going to be able to hold back if it comes to it, and you KNOW people are going to die if that happens. What result does that entire story gives you? It gives you an antisocial, meek, extremely shy and hesitant, and extremely anxious and nervous person, with pretty much zero social skills. One who's straight up prone to panic attacks if she SEES another human being. Or in other words: You get Carmilla.
21:48 they are all dead but that giant crystal you saw ryuzu in has teh ability to preserve souls so somehow (its genuinely not explained how they did it in teh main novel as far as i know just one of the nessecary materials) someone sealed the souls of the witches in either that same or a similar stone at some point and left it in the graveyard with both ryuzu and echidna's corpse also 22:26 it means that she will be allowed to access his memory/knowledge reserves of everything that happens before he returned (she doesnt obain the ability she can just access his memory of it more freely) also he has to carry her soul around with him (theres a sidestory where he accepts the contract known as teh greed IF)

Day 1 of recommending Overlord
I am not a member anymore very disappointed
This is actually reveled the first time puck kills subaru. He freezes and the time continues to pass, thus he is jumping worlds and not returning to the past.
Also react to Bleach "Eien" Music vídeo, its very good indeed
About when you said Luke, that are like Subaru. I think it's true.
Your wife chose you, just like Satella chose Subaru to be her lover 😂
That is actually awesome!
4:37 imagine what Emilia felt on this one... Subaru said to her in s1 ep 25 that he loves her 2000 times and shii, then found him kill himself for a girl you didn't even know
so who's rem?
🤯
The promise that's proceeded by "In the end" was a part that was very difficult for a lot of people to understand.
The gist of the whole thing, is that echidna always promises that she will get subaru to success, in the end.... not immediately. which means she has 0 intention of giving subaru all the answers immediately. recall how she is literally the witch of greed. she wants to know everything in the world. you dont think echidna would use subaru to die over and over to explore as much as possible like some full completionist gamer in an open world game? yea. thats about what i gathered from that
I'm glad that there is an explanation for the contract since I also struggled with this part of the story. Thank you my friend!
So in a way she'd just use him to find every answer to everything... Eventually the answer to his perfect end... Eventually
@@GOTGames yes.
Here's the full version from the light novel (I know none of y'all are gonna read this but I'm just showing how big it actualy is):
“The Return by Death that you possess is an incredible Authority.
I loved this chapter in the novel
Christ...
Oh god
shes so good at acting evil when she wants
I read 10 lines and said wtf I can't read this much lmoa😂
Fun fact: The author of Re:Zero releases IF stories every April Fool's day, and in the Greed IF route, Subaru actually says yes to Echidna's contract, and leaving out all other details, he dies over 100 million times, and he becomes so numb to dying that he kills himself just so he can go back and tell Petra whether it's going to rain or not the next day.
And if anybody wants to learn more about the IF stories without having to spend a lot of time reading all of them, Echidnut has made wonderful videos on all of them.
@@Kens-MusicQuick correction, it’s 100 million times. Other than that it’s pretty much the sane
i believe the 10k death is on the pride if story, on the greed if story it is more than a 100 million time and it is the most he died in any if story
@@sorannmw3500 Yea it’s also been calculated that he has lived for 300,000+ years over the course of those deaths.
hell nah, that sounds like a nightmare
After watching the next episode it made even more interesting, she herself says she doesn't want to be viewed as the only evil one, I see it now 🤔
@GOTGames There is an omitted interlude chapter with Echidna and the other witches as active characters that takes place the moment after Subaru leaves the tea party. This chapter will reverse everything you've seen in this and the next episodes, especially when it comes to Echidna's character and her true movtives.
@@LxDization I realize there's more to it ofc, i was just detailing what's been presented in the anime thus far.
She also smells really bad right I heard
Pandora? Since she wasn't there due to being alive
Ah... She's pretty cool then 🤔😂
In the novel, that scene where Reinhardt defeated Puck was crazy. That single slash simoutaneously destroyed and recreated the world.
🤯🤯🤯
So there's an argument that Od Lagna is thematically similar to a sun, but it was not said that Reinhard could beat "the sun"
He's also been outright stated to be the strongest person
The trial is a “unthinkable present” there’s so many potential presents for Subaru due to return by death the trial glitched and ended up showing him every potential present form each timeline
4:15 Satella only appeared because Subaru talked about return by death so much so as long as they don’t talk about it again she won’t appear. She also didn’t appear after the 1st tea party and 1st trial remember
7:22 It was always his voice also in the 1st trial
11:30 Fun fact Subarus VA didn’t read the light novel because he wants to act the scenes as in the moment as possible and one day he walked into the studio and everyone just kept saying bunnies to him and he was really confused lmao
13:50 Yes it is
16:30 Maybe ask the Re:Zero subreddit I’m sure they’d be glad to tell you ☠️
19:18 Echidna herself did say that Subaru might have a knack for seducing witches in one of the earlier episodes
22:01 Before she died Echidna went around nd collected the souls of the other witches they are indeed all dead
25:35 Everyone who watched Luke long enough knows he’ll change his mind immediately when the witch of Lust pops up
28:22 More fun facts this whole monologue was done by the Echidnas VA in one take also it was 4 whole pages in the light novel the studio had to cut it down and fans actually got upset bc they thought it wasn’t long enough
33:31 I actually quite like that the approach to the 7 Deadly Sins in re zero is quite unorthodox and contradicting even the witch of wrath heals people with her wrath but it triggers a natural disaster somewhere else because she steals mana from the world so every time she heals someone people die that’s why she’s a witch. It makes you focus more on how they encapsulate their sin even tho their appearance isn’t befitting of it. There’s so many anime about the concept and it’s always pretty on the nose so props again to Tappei Nagatsuki for being an awesome writer and having the ability to subvert tropes and cliches so skillfully
35:08 Because telling someone to wait for a person that’ll never come and them ending up spending 400 years In insulation just to satisfy your curiosity is fucked up big time.

So many timelines where things went wrong and the fact that it ends with subaru not even knowing whether all of it is real or not.... it must be terrifying for him
poor subaru, doesnt mind dying to save others but the thought of letting the people he loves down broke him
Notice how the first trial back in episode 3 said to face the PAST.... now, hes facing the second trial.... unthinkable PRESENT.... the third trial.... i wonder.....
It was a CHRISTMAS ANIME afterall lmao
Well they did have snow and bunnies and elves.. and Elsa opens up people like Christmas gifts.
Behold, an unthinkable PRESENT... bwa ha ha
😂 well damn!!
Subaru: _experiences a montage of all his deaths and sees the pain it caused those closest to him_
Echidna: "So yeah, I want you to keep doing that as much as possible so I can satisfy my curiosity. But I promise to get you to your desired outcome... eventually. Also, you can use me however you want."
Luke: "Would."
Echidna: "Also, I'm the reason Betty's been miserable for 400 years and wants to die."
Luke: "...still would."
Who wouldn't?
U guys surely love dying…
Is really sad that they cut a lot of the 2 trial in the anime, a lot of the routes are way longer, like the one when Rem kill Subaru, there an entire conversation between Emilia, Rem, Ram and Rosswald, that flesh out their point of view at that moment, showing how Rem couldn't justify how she murder Subaru so brutally and also let us see that Emilia already care a lot for Subaru at that moment, even resigning the fight for the throne😢
You mean the one where she killed him in the mansion or the forest?
@@itemboy6814
In the mansion
@@itemboy6814 Technically it was Ram who killed him in the forest
She even took Subarus body to Elior forest if I remember correctly
and slapping roswald
"I will without fail bring you to the future you desire."
This statement means she will use return by death as many times as it takes to get it perfect. It is hell.
Echidna be save scumming
I love Echidna as a character but she is what she is. Knowledge always comes first no matter who it hurts or how she has to obtain it.
Yeah... "Behold an unthinkable present" was one of those lines that got engraved into my brain after watching. I LOVE this scene, and the more I think on it the more interesting it is.
back in season 1, roswaal stated that he wanted to kill the dragon, and yes reinhard is op af, guy can pretty much one shot the sun itself , no kidding
and if subaru formed the contract with echidna, thats the start of the Greed IF story.... he dies a MILLION times... yes a million, LITERALLY , he eventually turns into roswaal (mentally i mean), and he even kills himself just so that he can tell others about the weather forecast.. like bruhhhh thats wild
For your information, the voice actress of Echidna did her monologue in a single take. The technical staff couldn't believe it at the time.
Summer time rendering would be good
Yes, if he loves re zero, summertime rendering would be a great anime for him to watch. It has that mystery aspect but also that character development
As I heard or read somewhere in the English and Spanish versions, Edchina's speech was recorded in several parts. But in the Japanese version the voice actress Maaya Sakamoto recorded the entire scene in one go and the first time. Seriously, Japan is on another level😂😂
You wouldn't want to sign a contract with Echidna, shit's like hell.
1 of the explanations: She promised "In the END... you gonna reach the desired RESULT"
= She gonna make Subaru re start infinite times to see EVERY SINGLE POSSIBILITY until she finds the best one
= Subaru mind gonna eventually be completely gone 💀
She's like an ultimate completionist that plays every aspect of a game till she gets the 200% completed achievement. Which includes letting her character die thousands if not millions of times. In this case, Subaru is the character she is playing with.
@chaosmastermind she playing Sim's 🤣
4:27 The witch of Envy, Satella manifested because of him telling Echidna repeatedly about Return By Death, not because he took the trial.
I really love this cliffhanger. The pain waiting for next episode after the entrance of Satela.
You should watch Summertime Render, it’s very similar to Rezero so it fits perfectly
Summertime Rendering is a Good Watch and Its 100% finished.
16:20 your head is in the gutter this episode Luke, witch of lust doesn’t like Subaru much at all but came here to save him because Echidna told her too to stop his mind from eroding to nothing in the trial
21:50 Its what the afterlife looks like for Echidna because of very special circumstances the other witches are there because Echidna gathered and preserved their souls. Yes they are very much dead
28:20 multiple page text speech greatly reduced in the anime. The biggest thing I think they missed including in the speech was the part about how amazing return by death is for researchers in performing experiments under the exact same conditions when this is normally not possible
31:00 you really really really don’t want to sign. The part you seem to be missing is that Echidna wants to use return by death as a researcher performing experiments about every possible change and the results. This would mean hundreds of millions of deaths for Subaru after he just found out that parallel worlds are a possibility
35:15 yes we get the impression that contracts with the witch of Greed almost inevitably lead to this sort of bad/sad end as the witch seeks to satiate her curiosity with almsot 0 regard/understanding to the actual wellbeing of others
" 16:20 your head is in the gutter this episode Luke, witch of lust doesn’t like Subaru much at all but came here to save him because Echidna told her too to stop his mind from eroding to nothing in the trial"
Now, think about what happened with Emilia last episode...
Carmilla might be shy but she really knows how to hold a grudge according to Echidna
Spoilers novels:
Using lore from later arcs I know people say it's been disproven but the question posed is something more like "does return by death, maybe with Satella's involvement, transport Subaru to a new world where he can survive or does it stay in the current world and remake it entirely, including every single living being within it, to reset it?" so Subaru doesn't believe there is a non monstrous explanation for his authority.
After not watching for a while I'd forgotten just how emotionally brutal this series is.
I LOVE IT.
Yes, Enchiladas has been drawn differently in the anime. Good guess, Luke. The anime gave her bigger honkers.
For the poll I'd reccomend Bungou Stray Dogs (61 episodes) or My Hero Academia ( 113 Episodes), AOT had 90 episodes so they're similar in lenght
With Natsuki Rizzbarus authority, Return by Rizz, it's no wonder people call hit the -lolimancer- *Witch Whisperer*
So a lot goes on this episode I feel like it's important to highlight some things:
1: Subaru's version of the second trial means it's practically impossible for him, because he needs to do it over and over again for every single time he's died.
Subaru is angry because Ecidina fucked over 400 years of life for Beatrice leaving her in solitude with no consideration for her whatsoever.
I think Mob psycho 100 would be perfect
Mob Psycho would definately be a good one
Definitely less.. ehem... distracting material to distract him from the dialogue 😅
Kind of a spoiler since this is should be said next season
@@remmzero684or not because they cut all the witches' back stories save for Typhon and Minerva in the LN
Spoilers novels:
I agree with writing all of that and what you said!
5:45 Glad you picked up on it. How depressing for those left in those "failed" timelines, right? 🤯 I had chills "Behold an unthinkable present"
But enjoying your reaction to Re:Zero, Luke! for the next anime I highly recommend "summer time rendering" in my opinion its a great anime with similar vibes to re:zero, but I understand why you wouldn't wanna watch a similar anime right after re:zero.
Fun fact:
Episodes 12 and 13 have enough cut content to make at the minimum another episode. (Maybe even two.)
Its unclear whether the World Goes on after Subaru dies or if he just goes Back, the Trials aren't literal, They're simulations of reality meant to force you into realising/changing a belief you have.
March Comes in like a Lion would be a great reaction
6:10 when i saw this first time , i was like damn this show is named as "ReZero: **Starting Life in Another World **"
29:44 to tl:dr this speech for anyone who didnt follow "i will help you because your power can generate infinite knowledge and experimentation routes through multiple timelines" (the witch of greed thirsts for knowledge return by death is very good for gathering it and subaru is attached to it) shes genuinely down to do almost anything for that purpose

Echidona wants to know EVERYTHING in the world, the good stuff but also the bad, morbid, etc.. subaru would have to do a lot of stuff like killing those he loves and those he hates before she could get him to the desired outcome
And yes, the aishiteru Rem/Carmilla used for "Love" is the highest meanning possible, just like how witch of envy used it, also another confirmation in this episode that subaru does love Rem
And Carmillas power is faceless bride, every person that sees carmilla sees her differently, people get madly in love with her, start fighting each other, whole cities and villages were destroyed because people got mad and started killing each other because of her power, even though she herself is pretty nice person, her power is more like "passive abillity" so she cant help it, also ye, people forget how to breathe and just die if they are too close to her
echidna goal was vastly different from what you listed. if you are in for spoilers i can tell you

Tokyo ghoul
Classroom of the elite
Stray dogs
Tokyo revengers
7:38 this proves how well written he is, how he is a normal person, just like us
For the poll it might make sense to include My Hero Academia and Hunter x Hunter, both are on the shorter side of long running anime
For My Hero Academia it's 138 episodes plus however many episodes we'll get in season 7, which starts airing in April
For Hunter x Hunter it's 148 episodes
On top of that I'd also like to throw in Haikyuu!! as a contender
Second for My hero Academia. I feel like he will love it.
Reposting here from Patreon:
I find it very ironic that the "downside" to Echidna's contract, in this case, is usually what one would say is the "benefit".

These are all alternate realities, in which Subaru died.
She uses her ability to pick up the waste.
she also seem so tired just talking lol
Dude, this is truly beyond disgusting! And I thought Power was bad...
Wasn't it mentioned that Typhon bathes her and is her caretaker in most ways?
I can already see the 'i can fix her' 😂
Meh i can fix her
One thing that I'd like to elaborate on with minimum implications is to continue being vigilant with Echidna and not "narrowing down" or thinking that you may have "figured her out"
The fun and fascinating thing about her character as that you should absolutely never take what she says at face value even if it seems like she's "revealing" something true about her, and that goes for both good and bad directions.
Ancient Magus' Bride is another good one to react to, barely anyone reacts to it

I'd feel like it be more suitable for vinland saga to be in that poll considered it's 48 eps and more mainstream than other friday slots.
Re:Fun fact
1.The Black serpent is the strongest out of all the mabeast
2. There is actually a story made by the author a Re what if Subaru agreed with Echidna contract, but that made him die 10,000 times and emilia was mentally unstable in that timeline
33:10 She makes a LOT of sense, actually. In fact, she might make the most sense of any of the witches. Think of it this way:
Imagine you're the most lustful and perverted person in the world.
