The fun thing about TREASURE is that their sequels are usually improvements on older games with a new paint job & name - like how Dynamite Headdy expands on McD's Treasure Land Adventure's grappling and Guardian Heroes expanding on the multiplane fighting from their Yu Yu Hakusho 4 player Genesis game.

I just scored Little Red Ridding Hood Zombie BBQ on the Nintendo DS at a moving sale! They were asking 10 bucks, but I gave them a twenty & they were happy. A win win for both of us. I didn't realize Mole Mania on the GB was a one hit wonder. Cool stuff. Also I'm one of the few who really did like Act Raiser 2 on the SNES! More so than the original, shhhh don't tell anyone. Ha-Ha!!
ActRaiser 2 was fantastic, you just can’t compare both. But taken as the game it is, it had great atmosphere, graphics and sound. The controls where difficult and the level of difficulty can be seen as a 2D Dark Souls. I would love for a remake like ActRaiser 1 got.
This was a cool video idea! Loved it. Here are some of my favorite one hit wonders from various consoles I have. Nes: Bucky O Hare Snes: Sunset Riders N64: Conkers Bad Fur Day Gamecube: Skies of Arcadia Legends Wii: The Last Story PS1: Einhander PS2: Haunting Ground PS3: 3D Dot Game Heroes Xbox 360: Lost Odyssey Sega Cd: Freakin SNATCHER - Would love a sequel to this. Snatcher could definitely have a really cool sequel made. I'd love to see it with more tolerable gameplay similar to Ace Attorney or something like that.
For me personally one game that definitely feels like a One Hit wonder is Billy Hatcher & The Giant Egg by Sonic Team on the Nintendo Gamecube. It's a very fun 3D platformer similar to other 3D platformers at the time. Unfortunately it was a commercial flop & Billy Hatcher just makes cameo appearances only in games like Sonic Racing.
That was e months ago, he's at 7,500 ! This channel is catching on fire. Congratulations but I will always miss the infancy of the good old days of this small channel.
On the Nintendo DS, Elite Beat Agents. Criminally underrated. On the NES, there are so many but the two that stand out to me personally are Abadox and The Adventures of Bayou Billy.
A modern one hit wonder? Mutant Mudds. Excellent platforming, great enemy design, absolutely stellar soundtrack. Where on earth is the sequel!? Ahhhgggg
Another kind of obscure Sonic Team one-hit wonder was *Burning Rangers* on the Saturn. I still consider it quite underrated and would have loved to see a remake or sequel for it on modern hardware.

Sonic Team was a one hit wonder machine back in the day. On top of Ristar and Chu Chu Rocket, you had Samba de Amigo, Burning Rangers, and NiGHTS into Dreams (since Journey of Dreams didn't really hold up to the original).
Act raiser to was a let down for me. I really enjoyed the 1st one me and my brother and the 2nd 1 just didn't have the magic it once did. Taking out the building of towns and colonies and that thing, It just wasn't act raiser anymore it was just a standard 2D fighter. What would be really nice is a remake of act raiser to current standards and qualities of life. I would chance it.
I feel the need to defend Actraiser 2. It is a very good game and is well regarded amongst people who beat hard games. Diamond Longplays and Gameplay and Talk, I think, both do playthroughs on their channel. I beat it a few years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Top 5 hardest game on the SNES. I think it is undeserving of it's bad reputation. Probably because it is much harder than the first Actraiser. In addition to Actraiser, Quintet also developed Soulblazer, Illusion of Gaia and Teranigma. All of these games have a very similar feel.
Some games that I would consider one hit wonders... Katamari Demacy Master Blaster (new sequels are from a different developer) Little Nemo Blast Corps Diddy Kong Racing Perfect Dark (if you don’t count Goldeneye) Eternal Darkness Parapa the Rappa Wii Fit Black and White Space Station Silicon Valley Track and Field II Darkwing Duck Secret of Mana (no US sequel until we got the collection recently) Conkers Bad Fur Day
When I hear about one hit wonders I always think about Sunset Riders,Gain Grounds and Ecco the dolphin. In arcade games the COW game from Konami, Spinmaster and Prehistoric Isle 2
Diddy Kong Racing, Ice Climber, and Forgotten World, Ristar, Mole Mania, and Knights of the Round are all one-hit wonders which are long overdue for sequels, as I see if! The Kid Icarus series could also potentially count, as Myths & Monsters for the Gameboy and Uprising for the 3DS both failed to attain the popularity of the original NES/FDS classic title or spawn much of a franchise out of it.
One hit wonders for me include weapon lord and soldiers of fortune. Nights into dreams falls into that category of being the only one worth owning even though there was a sequel on the Wii.
One-off game that TECHNICALLY had a sequel (tho I never played it) that I absolutely love is StarTropics. Come on, Nintendo! Please bring StarTropics back, or at the VERY least bring Zoda's Revenge to Switch Online!
For me, this series is more of a 2 hit wonder, and in my opinion, the History Channel: Civil War games 'A Nation Divided' and 'Secret Missions' come to mind, because these are among the few games that I think offer a great history lesson outside of the typical World War II first person shooters. I have 'A Nation Divided' on PS2 and 'Secret Missions' on PS3. I wish these History Channel video games would still be made today.
@1:53 actually yes you did. Sega answered that question well before you answered it with the 2nd line of text on the back of the box. Ristar is a portmanteau...the Japanese LOVE doing this to English words.
My personal take is a weird one, but for me it was an SNES game based on a license, The Mask. I really like the atmosphere and soundtracks in that game. I heard they were going to make one for the SEGA Genesis but it was delayed and never came out. What a shame😢
I think Ristar is pronounced Rye-Star, because it's a contraction of Rising Star. Anyway, some other one hit wonders are Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo (PSX), Mischief Makers (N64), Diddy Kong Racing (N64), Spec Ops: The Line (Xbox 360), and Binary Domain (Xbox 360).
Mischief Makers! Add that to Treasure's list :) As for Rye-Star, that's definitely the more natural way to say it but I remember seeing something somewhat official that said it's actually "Rih-Star" with a short i. Wish I could remember where I saw that now.
@@RetroBirdGaming The Japanese box art has it spelled out in katakana as リスター (Risutaa), which seems to confirm that they intended the short i pronunciation. Checking the katakana can actually be really helpful for settling some of these disputes, even only knowing a few of the characters. For another example, Sonic Adventure DX spells out the pronunciation of "DX" as "Deluxe"... so no, it doesn't stand for "Director's Cut". However, there are limitations, like when two similar sounds in English share one Japanese equivalent, and/or when a word may be derived from English (so do you say it like it was intended by the Japanese game devs, or the way it's usually pronounced in English? Oh, hey there, "Chrono" series!).

Was "Glover" for the N64 considered a good game? Also, "Conker's Bad Fur Day" didn't get a sequel as much as it got a remake, right? And "Space Station Silicon Valley" is another one, to my knowledge.
Part of me really wants to say Toejam and Earl. I know it got a sequel, but it honestly isn't that good. Kid Dracula also comes to mind, and I could probably make some arguments for games from obscure systems like the Vectrex or Neo Geo Pocket Color.
So many great games mentioned between this video and the comments section! It almost hurts a little to think that these were never followed up on... or never got worthy follow-ups, anyway. (Especially when there are so many sequels out there that the world doesn't need.) The N64 was packed with one-hit wonders, now that I think of it. Or maybe it wasn't. Half of Rare's output- and all of Rockstar/DMA's- was made up of cool one-off titles... but not all of them were even necessarily a hit. (Guess it depends... for "hits", are we talking about good games, critically-acclaimed games, or popular games?) Also, obligatory mention of Vexx, an underrated Mario 64 clone with a somewhat darker fantasy vibe. (Also arguably a no-hit wonder.) A sequel was pitched (which would have delivered on the embarrassingly edgy attitude that the first game pretended to have), but got cancelled early on, because of poor sales and/or Acclaim's financial woes.
How about rocket robot on wheels on the N64 which is sucker punch's first game it's an excellent platformer with a crazy good physics engine for the time a sequel would've been awsome and it still would be
original bubsy game was not only a one hit wonder for accolade but also for the franchise bc it was the only game in the series that has sold well and was well received
alex kidd in miracle world is a one hit wonder like yes there are 5 sequels but only one of them plays like miracle world and none of them are nearly as popular, even if shinobi world is a well liked game it’s not one many people have played
The first two Kid Icarus games on NES and Game Boy are fine, but nothing too special. Kid Icarus Uprising on the 3DS from 2012 is my favorite game of all time. Also pretty much anything PlatinumGames made that isn't a Bayonetta game or StarFox Guard/Zero. Think MadWorld, Vanquish, Astral Chain, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, etc.

Wait. My whole diet consists of hot pockets amd bottled water tho. And powdered protein shake from sams club cuz aint nobody got time for that.
I'm thinking about Vagrant Story on ps1. Amazing atmosphere but never a sequel...
Was "Glover" for the N64 considered a good game? Also, "Conker's Bad Fur Day" didn't get a sequel as much as it got a remake, right? And "Space Station Silicon Valley" is another one, to my knowledge.
Yeah, I agree. I would say the Xbox release of Conker was more of a remake.
Gotta love the Glove, right?
Part of me really wants to say Toejam and Earl. I know it got a sequel, but it honestly isn't that good. Kid Dracula also comes to mind, and I could probably make some arguments for games from obscure systems like the Vectrex or Neo Geo Pocket Color.
Jet li rise to honor for the ps2 is an example I can think of
So many great games mentioned between this video and the comments section!
It almost hurts a little to think that these were never followed up on... or never got worthy follow-ups, anyway.
(Especially when there are so many sequels out there that the world doesn't need.)
The N64 was packed with one-hit wonders, now that I think of it. Or maybe it wasn't. Half of Rare's output- and all of Rockstar/DMA's- was made up of cool one-off titles... but not all of them were even necessarily a hit. (Guess it depends... for "hits", are we talking about good games, critically-acclaimed games, or popular games?)
Also, obligatory mention of Vexx, an underrated Mario 64 clone with a somewhat darker fantasy vibe. (Also arguably a no-hit wonder.) A sequel was pitched (which would have delivered on the embarrassingly edgy attitude that the first game pretended to have), but got cancelled early on, because of poor sales and/or Acclaim's financial woes.
NiGHTS is also a one hit wonder idk how well journey of dreams sold but it’s pushed so far aside
Yeah, Journey of Dreams feels pretty ignored to me.
4:43 More entries in the Treasure Heroes series please, Treasure
How about rocket robot on wheels on the N64 which is sucker punch's first game it's an excellent platformer with a crazy good physics engine for the time a sequel would've been awsome and it still would be
Yeah, that's a good example.
I've never heard of X-Men 2. 🧐 The only X-Men game I've ever played is the arcade beat-em-up.
A lot of great shmups are one hit wonders, Sega Saturn and the Sega Dreamcast has boatloads of them.
Definitely! I think it makes sense when certain shoot 'em ups are one-offs.
original bubsy game was not only a one hit wonder for accolade but also for the franchise bc it was the only game in the series that has sold well and was well received
The original Bubsy had a lot of hype surrounding it, but I thought it got a lot of criticism when it first came out?
As an angry Retro-bird fan, you are 19 minutes early >:( than you normally post
Hahah the second it's done I upload that sucker!
alex kidd in miracle world is a one hit wonder like yes there are 5 sequels but only one of them plays like miracle world and none of them are nearly as popular, even if shinobi world is a well liked game it’s not one many people have played
I dunno man, Breath of the Wild lets you murder all kinds of wild animals- it even rewards you for it!
Think MadWorld, Vanquish, Astral Chain, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, etc.
my topic... is games i wanted sequils for that never happend... super metroid.. and castlevania symphony of the night.. with the same graphic style.. i know about the gba ones.. but its just not the same
I agree with the GBA Castlevania games having their own feel from Symphony of the Night.
I like Shock Troopers: 2nd Squad better than the original. No knock on the original; it's great. I just like the sequel better.
