A chopper is a type of custom motorcycle which emerged in California in the late 1950s. The chopper is perhaps the most extreme of all custom styles, often using radically modified steering angles and lengthened forks for a stretched-out appearance. They can be built from an original motorcycle which is modified ("chopped") or built from scratch. Some of the characteristic features of choppers are long front ends with extended forks often coupled with an increased rake angle, hardtail frames (frames without rear suspension), very tall "ape hanger" or very short "drag" handlebars, lengthened or stretched frames, and larger than stock front wheels.[1] The "sissy bar", a set of tubes that connect the rear fender with the frame, and which are often extended several feet high, is a signature feature on many choppers.
Perhaps the best known choppers are the two customized Harley-Davidsons, the "Captain America" and "Billy Bike", seen in the 1969 film Easy Rider.
Harley-Davidson, Inc., HD, or Harley, is an American motorcycle manufacturer founded in 1903 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It was one of two major American motorcycle manufacturers to survive the Great Depression, along with Indian.[3] The company has survived numerous ownership arrangements, subsidiary arrangements, periods of poor economic health and product quality, and intense global competition[4] to become one of the world's largest motorcycle manufacturers and an iconic brand widely known for its loyal following. There are owner clubs and events worldwide, as well as a company-sponsored, brand-focused museum.
Harley-Davidson is noted for a style of customization that gave rise to the chopper motorcycle style.[5] The company traditionally marketed heavyweight, air-cooled cruiser motorcycles with engine displacements greater than 700 cc, but it has broadened its offerings to include more contemporary VRSC (2002) and middle-weight Street (2015) platforms.
Harley-Davidson manufactures its motorcycles at factories in York, Pennsylvania; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Kansas City, Missouri (closing); Manaus, Brazil; and Bawal, India. Construction of a new plant in Thailand began in late 2018.[6] The company markets its products worldwide, and also licenses and markets merchandise under the Harley-Davidson brand, among them apparel, home decor and ornaments, accessories, toys, scale figures of its motorcycles, and video games based on its motorcycle line and the community.
In 1968, Monogram then hired stylist Tom Daniel who designed more than 80 fantastical vehicles, not always based on real cars.
When the company was bought by Mattel in 1968, custom vehicles designed by Tom Daniel and others were seen in both small and large sizes in Hot Wheels diecast - and then in Monogram kit form. By around 1970, many of these models were molded in bright reds and oranges and did not require painting.
Ed "Big Daddy" Roth (March 4, 1932 - April 4, 2001) was an American artist, cartoonist, illustrator, pinstriper and custom car designer and builder who created the hot rod icon Rat Fink and other characters. Roth was a key figure in Southern California's Kustom Kulture and hot rod movement of the late 1950s and 1960s.
Roth had his shop, that he started in early 1959, at 4616 Slauson Avenue in Maywood, California (about 8 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles). He ran an ad in Car Craft magazine that year announcing the new address of his shop.
During the mid 1960s, Roth associated with various outlaw motorcycle clubs who congregated at his shop as a lot of bikers were then living in Lynwood and Maywood. Musicians, police officers, FBI agents and various people involved in Hollywood would visit as well, providing an environment for one of Ed Roth's most creative periods, and an important time in Kustom Kulture.
Roth incorporated the Iron Cross into his artwork (surfers had previously been using the iron cross as a symbol of youthful, carefree rebellion).[9] Roth did not own a bike at the time, so he bought a brand-new Harley-Davidson Sportster and then proceeded to paint its gas tank a flat black color. Roth painted white lettering on one side of the tank that said: "Love is Hate"; and on the reverse side: "Hate is Love".[16]
Roth had taken black and white photos of different bikers. He made posters, with titles like "Beautiful Buzzard", or "Gray Cat" out of these photos, and sold them at car shows.

That looks like a micro machine compared to the 1/8 scale one you did! Lol! I'm going to my brothers house right now to get the box full of all the models that me and him built back in the 90's. Looking forward to the next video!!

I'm a sucker for Tamiya kits because they're technical and I love their 1/12 bikes. But Chris builds the least expensive kits that are fun builds and great for beginners and makes them look great straight from the box! So it just goes to show that you don't have to buy the most expensive elaborate models to have fun in this hobby! He also shows you how he does his stuff whereas some modeler only show you what they do in pictures of built models without explaining how they build them. He is a good resource!

How do you apply it? Can you spray it directly to model or have to reduce it? Does it run? Can you wet sand it? Sorry for all the questions, but am fascinated by how cheap it is. Clear coats are expensive. . .

Great build Chris. I too love Hawaiian and Tiki themed customs. This trike would look cool on a trailer behind a custom 70s van with a Tiki theme as well.

I was looking at this at Ollie's early today. I ended up picking up the Ala Kart instead. This video is making me regret that. I have built the Milk Truck Trike. They are fun, good looking builds! I know this is a simpler build, but I enjoyed the shorter format compared to your longer videos.

Another neat kit, and another excellent build. The ONLY thing I can say that is a drawback when using Future as a clear coat, is that if you move your kit from point A to point B in really cold weather, it'll crack. Happened to a couple of modelists I know, that brought their kits to some shows, here in Canada, during winter time. But as long as your kits don't get into cold temperatures, it'll be fine. And by cold I mean, like -10 Celsius and under.

I have a couple question for you. 1. Do you sell kits? 2. If so what state are you in?. 3. Have you used acrylic paints? I did my first model in acrylic and seems like multiple coats are needed.
I am glad to watch your building of kits, gives me ideas. I asked one time about wheels on whether you glue or not. I did the super singles on the CF truck, they are great. Keep up the good work.

I have the tiki trike. Not a bad model. But I do have 1 complaint. The body halves did not go together very well. I will have to sand the seam down the middle, maybe use a bit of Tamiya filler and then paint it yellow again. Other than that problem the bike went together very well and looks good.

Hi Chris. When you glued the chain/sprocket/axle part in place, did it seat deep into the frame halves? Did you test fit the motor with its mounting bars on it at the same time? My kit is fitting a bit oddly. The axle doesn't "register" in a way that I have confidence that the frame will be true when I go to assemble after paint.
