    Ed "Big Daddy" Roth (March 4, 1932 - April 4, 2001) was an American artist, cartoonist, illustrator, pinstriper and custom car designer and builder who created the hot rod icon Rat Fink and other characters. Roth was a key figure in Southern California's Kustom Kulture and hot rod movement of the late 1950s and 1960s.
    Roth was born in Beverly Hills, California. He was the son of Marie (Bauer) and Henry Roth.[1] He grew up in Bell, California, attending Bell High School, where his classes included auto shop and art.
    Roth is best known for his grotesque caricatures - typified by Rat Fink - depicting imaginary, out-sized monsters driving representations of the hot rods that he and his contemporaries built. Roth began airbrushing and selling "Weirdo" T-shirts at car shows and in the pages of Car Craft magazine as early as July 1958. By the August 1959 issue of Car Craft "Weirdo shirts" had become a full-blown craze with Roth at the forefront of the movement. The article featured Roth along with fellow Kustom Kulture pioneers Dean Jeffries and Pete Millar. Inspired by Roth and Barris Kustoms (whose shirts were airbrushed by Dean Jeffries), Detroit native Stanley Miller, a.k.a. "Stanley Mouse", began advertising his own shirts in the pages of Car Craft in January 1961. The lesser-known Rendina Studios of Detroit and Mad Mac of Cleveland also joined in on the monster "weirdo" shirt craze, but Roth was certainly the man who widely popularized the "monsters in hot rods" art form.
    In 1959 Roth created the Outlaw. This fiberglass Kustom hot rod was featured in the January 1960 issue of Car Craft. The car was covered in Car Craft and Rod and Custom, and appeared at custom car and hot rod shows. Other hot rods include the Beatnik Bandit (1961), the twin Ford engined Mysterion (1963), the Orbitron (1964), and the Road Agent (1965), among others.[2] In 1965, Roth's surf buggy, the Surfite, was featured in the film Beach Blanket Bingo starring Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello, and also in Village of the Giants, featuring Beau Bridges and Tommy Kirk. One of Roth's personal drivers was a tangerine orange 1955 Chevy 2-door post with a Ford 406 cu. in. engine under the hood...he drove this car to his shop every day for years.In 1962 the Revell model company began selling plastic models of Roth's cars and from 1963 to 1965 Revell also manufactured plastic models of many of Roth's monsters, including Rat Fink, Brother Rat Fink, Drag Nut, Mother's Worry, Mr. Gasser and other weird creatures created by Roth. Revell continues to re-issue Roth's Monsters and Kustom Car kits.[3]In 1963 The Hawk Model Company issued its line of "Weird-Oh's" plastic models and Marx Toys issued Nutty Mads, both clearly inspired by Roth's work. Both items were quite popular in the mid-60s and remain sought after collector's items to this day. Hawk Models continues to re-issue its "Weird-Oh's" periodically.[4]Numerous artists were associated with Roth including artist David Mann, Rat Fink Comix artist R.K. Sloane, Steve Fiorilla who illustrated some of Roth's catalogs, and most notably, Ed Newton

    Chris, I can't keep up, you build them faster than I can purchase them, now you're building them 2 at a time! LOL. I love BIG DADDY ROTH, grew up with Rat Finks and Big Daddy's Hot Rod model kits. My favorite's are the Mysterian and the Beatnik Bandit and Yellow Fang, Ed's entry into to world of drag racing. Yellow Fang won many Top Eliminators and ran a best ever of 7.86 at 204 mph in the 1/4 mile. There is a photo of the Mail Box Trike in 1967 and it has a V-8 engine. Big Daddy would be proud to see your builds.

    Wow, one of those take you back moments. I built that Taco back in the 70s when I must have been about 10. I remember having parts from this for years after I took it all apart (‘cause that happens when you build it when you’re 10😁) I had the parts so long I’d forgotten what the model looked like. Cool.

    Chris thank goodness they're redoing this model kit from MPC. People on eBay have the old model kit series and they are wanting $50 a piece. A total of $200 for all model kits. Hopefully when they release all of the kits that will be a decent price for each one. Love the video Keep It Coming.

    Plenty Nice! In addition to the many choices "out-of-the-box" it will be pretty simple to personalize further with rear wheel swaps plus tinkering with induction and exhaust - especially on "Taco" version. Those extra decals from these two kits alone could well serve for various "special delivery" vehicles or even on one of those Round 2 rereleases of Modified Stockers! As Chris emphasizes - "Have FUN!"

    Wow Chris ! I hope I can get my hands on these ! While watching your video I heard you say that 6 of these were coming out for 2020. I don't know much about these Choppers but I can see they are re-issues of older kits. After watching your video, I decided to do a little research on them. I don't know which of the others will come out for 2020 but one that really caught my attention was one they called "The Cobra Chopper ". It has 3 seats on it. Two of the seats look like giant Cobra Snakes ! I sure hope it will be in the series !

    Those are cute. Nice to see 1/25 bikes. I wish they'd do more "stock" ones, to just put in the back of a pick-up or on a trailer behind a car of 1/24-25 scale (plus, I'm not really into all out custom like these). IRL, does the Taco Trike orange is more of a bright orange, or is it a little bit like a darker shade of orange/copper as in the video?

    Big Daddy Roth did a lot of custom hot rods..

    • @blkft
      @blkft 4 года назад +2

      Yes he did. Originally this trike was built by Jim Jacobs and Dan Woods as the Kruze Wagon. It was aquired by Roth, repainred and named the Mailbox. Roth liked the trike except for the horrible rear and side blind spots it had.
      Roth's Tweety Pie was orginally built by Bob Johnston.
      Roth's creativeness, including the talents of Dirty Doug and Dick Cook (Partners in crime! LoL!) shows in the Mysterion, Beatnik Nandit, Orbitron, and etc,,,,.
      Just a wee bit of info.
      :))

    • @blkft
      @blkft 4 года назад +1

      Roth is probably one of if not my most favorite car customizer. I met him once at the Dallas Autorama decked out in his usual Top Hat and Tuxedo. During his career he pushed the creative edge of customization with his whacky yet cool designs.
      Basically, one those dudes who lived a life that most of us wished or dreamed about. :))
      My faves: Beatnik, Rubber Ducky, and all his VW and Porsche powered triked.
