Kenworth Trucks, Inc. is an American-based truck manufacturer. Founded in 1923 as the successor company to Gerlinger Motors, Kenworth specializes in production of heavy-duty (Class 8) and medium-duty (Class 5-7) commercial vehicles. Headquartered in Seattle suburb Kirkland, Washington, Kenworth has been a wholly owned subsidiary of PACCAR since 1945,[1] operating alongside sister company (and marketplace rival) Peterbilt Motors.
Kenworth marked several firsts in truck production; alongside the first truck produced with a standard diesel-fuel engine, the company introduced a raised-roof sleeper cab, and the first heavy-duty truck with an aerodynamically optimized body design.[2] The Kenworth W900 has been produced continuously since 1961, serving as one of the longest production runs of any vehicles in automotive history.
For 1961 production, Kenworth underwent a substantial revision of its commercial truck line, debuting the W900 and the K900 (later renamed the K100); the W and K model prefixes are derived from company founders Worthington and Kent.[6][10] The W900 debuted the first complete redesign of the Kenworth conventional cab since 1939 with a standard tilting hood.[10] Similar in appearance to the previous K500, the K900/K100 received a taller cab and the doors of the W900.[16]
To meet increased demand for the new product lines, Kenworth opened a new assembly facility in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1964.[10] From 1964 to 1966, Kenworth nearly doubled its yearly truck sales.[17] In 1968, the company established Kenworth Australia; in place of importation and conversion, right-hand drive trucks were produced and developed in Melbourne, Australia.[17]
    1970s: Product line diversification
During the 1970s, the company underwent further expansion, adding an all-new facility in Chillicothe, Ohio, in 1974.[17] Kenworth added two new product lines in 1972, adding the C500 6x6 severe-service conventional and the Hustler low-cab COE (developed jointly with Peterbilt and produced in Canada[18][19]). The same year, parent company Pacific Car and Foundry adopted its current name PACCAR.
Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the company, annual Kenworth sales exceeded 10,000 for the first time for 1973.[6][17]
For 1976, Kenworth launched a flagship customization series, the VIT (Very Important Trucker) with a high level of interior features; distinguished by its skylight windows, the Aerodyne sleeper cab was the first factory-produced sleeper cab with stand-up headroom (for both the W900 and K100).[6] To commemorate the American Bicentennial, the VIT series was introduced in a limited-edition series of 50 (with each truck named after a state).
    1980s-1990s: Trucks of the future
In 1982 and 1984, respectively, the W900 and K100 underwent their most substantial revisions, becoming the W900B and K100E. While visually distinguished by the adoption of rectangular headlamps, the updates were centered around upgrading fuel economy, road handling, and reliability.

on some of the mixers I worked on, there was no passenger seat and a mixer control panel was pedestalled to the floor with a panel about 10 by 16 inches angled toward the drivers position.
this is a good addition to the IHC Pay star mixer and the Mack R series mixer!

Great build Chris as always, mine is on the UPS truck headed my way. I'm so happy you did a build and not just a review. Great idea on it being a working display. It seems like every AMT kit I build has at least one fit issue, but that's what makes it a challenge. I'm all excited for the Superliner to come out, can you build that one too? I get so pumped up watching you, that I jump into a new kit after watching your videos. Enjoy every build you do your a very positive good natured person, thank you Sir for all the tips and ideas. Awesome build, Chris! I was a little kid when this originally came out (I'm assuming so...born in '73, LOL) so I have no memories of it, but having driven a concrete/mixer of this type (was a Mack Model, but similar setup/bowl/etc) for a couple years after my long haul days, as soon as I saw it Coming Soon on Model Roundup I KNEW I was gonna want one. Thanks for building this one so soon after release, really enjoyed it, my friend. Happy Sunday and see you on the next review/build/video! 😊✌

Nice build, been waiting for this one! Just picked up three of these kits at the LHS cause they won't last long. For the cab mounts on the AMT w900 kits, I always sand the tabs off of the bottom of the rear cab mount and glue it to the cab first. Also file the locator pins off of the front cab mounts that line up with holes in bottom of interior tub, and then you can move the cab forward as needed to line up with the hood once it's installed.

Chris, another home run. I really like your take on the truck, and this is coming from someone who is in the concrete industry. This is definitely a pre 1990 era model, as there is no crow's nest on top of the mixer by the loading chute. Weathering is great. Really cool build as always, I am big fan of your whole outlook on building a model, build it like ya want. I have to ask, how do you clean up your clamp posts and swivel mount stuff? Maybe you could do a short video on that kind of thing and how to clean up the spray booth, that would be cool and helpful to modelers. Thanks, and keep up the good work.

    • @hpiguy
      @hpiguy  3 года назад +2

      I've never cleaned them,
Eventually the thick layer just cracks and falls off when I'm adjusting them.
Sometimes it's 1/8th inch thick. Pretty cool to think back on all those build ups.
I scrape the booth now and then but just to remove loose pieces. The filter is replaced once a month, which is about 6-8 kits or so.

Your builds are always great and this mixer is no exception. One of my favorites is the 1962 Impala build. The techniques and tools you use are very informative to see in use, and the painting tips are valuable. The more info about the whys and wherefore of painting, the better, IMO. it looks to me that Testors and Rustoleum paints are chemically compatible -- no potential for a chemical disaster. My question has to do with spray painting the large subassemblies such as the chassis/suspension. All of these small parts have lots of nooks and crannies. When painting after assembly of the unpainted parts, how do you get even coverage with paint without too much overspray on the more exposed parts and not enough in the more hidden parts? It might be more tedious, but would coverage be better if you painted individual parts first then assembled? Just asking. Keep up the great builds.

I think she looks cool Chris, I like the looks of a working truck, instead of a shelf queen or whatever. Or a model show queen. I ain’t never going to any model show so I build mine my way, “I did it my way “! lol! Have a good one bud! ✌🏻

I was looking forward to this from the time you showed it in the upcoming kits. Looks fantastic with just the right amount of weathering. Would be interesting to put it in a diorama with the other AMT construction equipment.

Hey Chris! I agree with you about keeping things simple(r) - while "working" features seem great just too much to eventually fall apart, disintegrate or disappear! Also appreciate your "keep it basic" approach to "work trucks" whether pickups or big rigs.

I couldn’t wait for you to build this. My family was in the construction business for many years and when I was younger I remember seeing these lined up on job sites.I’ve just built model cars but this is a must build for me. Thanks for showing the way. As always I appreciate your great work. Stay safe!

How fun is *that* ! Great job on the weathering ; love the oxidised paint .
Where'd its windscreen wipers go ? A somewhat glaring omission on AMT's part ( oh well , no biggie ) .
Who's the manufacturer of that decal solvent setter ?

    • @hpiguy

I just got one of these about a month ago. Thanks for the video and the heads up on the issues. How do you get quality paint jobs when your booth looks like that? Mine doesn't get a tenth as dirty and I have issues with dust and particles getting into the paint. What's your secret?

Chris I notice you assemble things like the engine and transmission almost completely before painting it. How do you get to all the detail under parts that run over other parts like hoses and fuel lines without getting different colors on other parts? I paint all my parts individually before beginning assembly because if I don't ill have all different colors on the engine block or transmission lol
